Nine Night, National Theatre [Youness Bouzinab]
Family usually makes for good drama and Natasha Gordon’s debut play is no exception. Nine Night is a compelling drama about a British-Jamaican family mourning the loss of their grandmother, Gloria. The title refers to the traditional Jamaican mourning ritual where family members get together over nine consecutive nights to celebrate and honour the life of the deceased, with much food, drinks and music involved. The ninth night sees the departure of the living dead’s soul from this world to the next.
Roy Alexander Weise’s strong direction helps Gordon’s deftly-written play move effortlessly from moments of high comedy, with power house performances from Cecilia Noble (Auntie Maggie) and Uncle Vincent (Ricky Fearon) to dramatic confrontational scenes between brother Robert (Oliver Alvin-Wilson) and sister Lorraine, played with great sensitivity by Franc Ashman. Rajha Shakery’s set serves the intimate atmosphere of the play well: most of the action takes place in the kitchen/dining room of Gloria’s home that seems not to have moved since the 1970s.
The use of Patois in the play, mainly by the older generation, Auntie Maggie and her husband Vincent, is a bold decision, knowing the National Theatre’s demographic, but one that pays off: it anchored the play in a place of truth and authenticity. Gordon did not pander to us non-Patois speakers. Although I did not get all the subtleties of the language, never once did I feel alienated. I was part of the family: laughing at Auntie Maggie’s antics, and crying when the ninth night came.
Nine Night is a celebration of family’s messy, yet beautiful dynamics and the healing powers of words. One can only encourage the National to produce more plays of that standing.
