I recently discovered Rick Roderick's lectures on YouTube. Above is the first in his Self Under Siege course, encompassing Heidegger, Sartre, Marcuse, Habermas, Foucault, Derrida, and Baudrillard. Being of a certain age, I especially enjoy his frequent recourse for examples to '90s popular and political culture.
As with Michael Sugrue and Darren Staloff, whom we've already seen on here, Roderick's lectures were produced in the 1990s for The Teaching Company. Roderick effectively completes a trinity, his plain-spoken and poppy radicalism a counterweight to Sugrue's eloquent conservative denunciations of "gnostic ressentiment" and to Staloff's nervous centrist defense of modern liberal civilization.
Superficially, and with the cruelty always involved in typing, he fits a type the Twitter reactionaries have lately named and shamed: the "shitlib yokel" or "hicklib," as his fans' application to him of the label "the Bill Hicks of philosophy" might imply. Conversely, Sugrue might fit the hicklib's antitype: the metrocon.
The hicklib, surrounded in the provinces by complacent conservatives, histrionically over-identifies with left critique, while the metrocon, beset by the "herd of independent minds" known as metropolitan left-liberals, deliberately adopts shocking reactionary rhetoric, each trying to feel free in an ideologically suffocating atmosphere. If the metrocon is too cavalier about what earlier eras of hierarchy and hegemony were actually like, the hicklib is equivalently casual about what toppling every hierarchy might actually cause or whose interests such rhetoric serves.
(I myself have elements of both sensibilities because I've had elements of both experiences—I notice that Roderick's mother, like my own, was a beautician—but am perhaps more the metrocon by temperament. The hicklib tends to have a Protestant background, the metrocon a Catholic or Jewish one.)
I think here of Roderick's calm acceptance, at the end of his excellent Derrida lecture, that philosophy is "white mythology," and that therefore a thousand other (indeed, Other) mythologies deserve to bloom; this may seem naive 30 years later, both about the epistemological chaos such a development occasioned and about anyone's willingness—white, black, other—not to believe their own myths.
On the other hand, now that it's happened—I don't myself believe in any "white mythology," for example—then we have to get through it with the kind of impassioned good humor Roderick models. That's what a good teacher is: not a conveyor of information, which is readily available in books, but a model of sensibility.
Roderick's life ended badly. Duke denied him tenure, and about a decade later, he died in 2002 at age 52. I recommend his son Max's extraordinary elegy, especially for a glimpse of the early violence and horror with which he purchased his adult convictions, a price too high to be dismissed with the culture-war tropes of the essentially nihilistic online era he both did and not quite foresee in The Self Under Siege.
My generation doesn’t live beneath Rick’s empty, Godless sky. We live beneath a sky so full of Gods that they have become mundane and meaningless. Our heritage collapses by the generation; my grandfather had America, my father had Texas, I have my father – what could my children possibly receive?

ooh boy i learned a lot from looking up the source for this -- philosopher Rick Roderick:
I said I deeply believe in some principles. This is one I deeply believe in: The Principle of Freedom. Which is, we must always act under the practical postulate that our will is free. Now, here is what Kant is saying, and I think it’s worth remembering. That we all have these arguments that we can’t do anything about something, and that so much stuff is going on, how can I help? For Kant, none of that works. It’s all excuses. Later, Sartre will call it “Bad Faith”. The practical postulate under which you should morally act is that you are free. Now, why does Kant call it a practical postulate? It’s simple. Because you can’t show that you are free, you may not even be free, in other words you could even be in prison – as Sartre says – or you could be determined by psychological, social factors, whatever. But you should act under the practical postulate that your moral decision makes a difference. Now – if you have noticed – so far all Kant is doing is giving us an account of what a lot of folks think moral action is anyway. Sort of, maybe this one is controversial, but we’ll see. In any case, that practical postulate is one that you have all adopted today, whether you knew it or not. Because hardly anyone gets up in the morning and dresses themselves as a cleverly constructed automaton, and says: ‘I wish I could freely do something today, but since there was the Big Bang and I know the laws of physics and biology and behavioural science, that means I am going to go through the day like an automaton.’ No. Practically speaking, you got up and went: ‘Hell, I am going to go to the talks’, right? As though you were free to do it. And, you’re here! Great. But, it’s funny when we turn to politics we forget this. We go ‘Well, you know, there is just nothing I can do…’. Well, Sartre called that Bad Faith because… in other respects you act under a practical postulate. Act as though you are free. You might get lucky. You might be free, who knows! Act that way. It’s worth trying!”

Rebbie's Wrestling Reviews - AEW Dynasty 2024
Kazuchika Okada (c) def. Pac by pinfall for the AEW Continental Championship in 21:55
This match was simply awesome. Two guys who have absolutely all the tools put them to good use in this opener. Pac sold everything amazingly, he is brilliant at what he does, and there were many great sequences between the two men. Some of the specifics of this one were absolutely unreal too. Avalanche brainbuster, that brutal barricade DDT Pac took, an awesome springboard moonsault, a standing Brutaliser, a Black Arrow into the knees: so much brilliant wrestling. Of course, there was also Okada’s rug pull of the Rainmaker taunt. He had us in the palm of his hand and everything about that moment was hilarious. Loved this one.
4.5 STARS OUT OF 5
House of Black (Malakai Black, Brody King, & Buddy Matthews) def. Adam Copeland, Eddie Kingston, & Mark Briscoe by pinfall in 17:46
Super fun! Loved the energy they brought to this one, and the pace was quick which is just what I want from a trios match like this. Briscoe had a pair of great spots on the apron here, first launching himself off a chair to attack Matthews, but then being launched off into a brutal Death Valley Driver by King into the barricade. I also really enjoyed the triple Spears later in the match. Generally just great fun here all executed well, and I enjoyed Black picking up the win after never truly meeting Copeland in the ring until that final moment. That’s fun and I look forward to Black challenging for the belt in the future. Potentially at Double or Nothing? I will say though, maybe Rick Knox could have picked a better position to count that pin, he was looking directly into the misted face of Copeland…
3.5 STARS OUT OF 5
Willow Nightingale def. Julia Hart (c) by pinfall for the AEW TBS Championship in 6:01
This is not the most revolutionary match on the card, but it was pretty satisfactory. It was pretty short, but I didn’t realise it was quite this short! It was worked sufficiently though and it gave us a big championship win for Nightingale! That’s going to be raising the rating! Mercedes Mone slightly cramps on what’s a lovely moment but I’m excited for their match at Double or Nothing! Feels big time!
3 STARS OUT OF 5
Roderick Strong (c) def. Kyle O’Reilly by pinfall for the AEW International Championship in 17:18
Another brilliant match. Great sells, great strikes, great technical work: what not to love? Some of the transitions and reversal in this one were simply beautiful, there was an awesome ankle lock transition by O’Reilly, there was a tiger driver that became a guillotine hold, there were sweet counters of some of their common offence: I ask again, what’s not to love?! O’Reilly has great facials for a match like this and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing! I think the finish was a tad sudden, I’m not entirely sure why Wardlow showed up, but good for him. We also see that Adam Cole can walk post-match!
4.5 STARS OUT OF 5
Chris Jericho def. Hook (c) by pinfall for the FTW Championship in 16:34
Please say sike right now. I will say, I was actually enjoying this one for most of its run. Hook has some awesome suplexes, he wrestles with such a unique form and stuff, he’s just very engaging. Hook sends Jericho through a table off the apron with a T-bone suplex, he suplexes him in a bin, and he kicks out of two Judas Effects! That all went so hard! I don’t particularly remember what Jericho did but oh well. Now, why the hell did he win? Jericho got to dominate, and like he overpowered Hook, in a strike exchange, which should never be happening with Jericho who is not known for anything close. Then, after all their action, Jericho is walking whilst Hook is selling his ass off for Jericho post-Judas Effect, and then he hits him with his baseball bat and wins. WHY?! I do think this “Learning Tree” character can be fun, but it should be a character where he goes in there and loses a lot, and convincingly. No one wants to see Jericho have many long matches, nor do they want to see him win titles. How does this help Hook? He does not need to reclaim the title again from the likes of Jericho, it makes him look like a dork. This should have been a feud where Hook won every encounter. Really stupid finish on a flawed but fun schmozz.
2.5 STARS OUT OF 5
Toni Storm (c) (w/ Mariah May & Luther) def. Thunder Rosa by pinfall for the AEW Women’s World Championship in 15:08
First off, Team Timeless were absolutely slaying with the looks here. Yes, of course that includes you Luther. This was a pretty good match overall. Rosa hits a great Tornillo, Nigel McGuiness is a hoot on commentary as usual, and the Death Valley Driver on the apron was awesome. Some sweet sequences and combos in there too, like a cool tornado DDT into a Northern Lights suplex from Storm. I don’t particularly care for the Storm Zero kickout as it was done, I feel like it was a bit early for something like that for me. Rosa also had a real smooth transition into a backbreaker late on before Storm rightfully got the win. As I say, good match, just not the best. I feel I’ve never particularly gotten into Thunder Rosa’s work. Like, she’s a good wrestler, but I just don’t feel much about her in-ring skill, and I don’t like her promos. Regardless, they had a decent showing here.
3.5 STARS OUT OF 5
Will Ospreay def. Bryan Danielson by pinfall in 32:40
I’m going to start by mentioning how brilliant the atmosphere was with this St. Louis crowd. They were awesome the whole night but here was their peak. Everyone was just having a blast it seemed. Now, there’s a lot of hubbub about this one, and I’ll start with this now: No, this isn’t the best match ever. What it is though is really quite great. So many unreal spots here and a solid bit of story throughout. There’s the likes of Danielson fully tying up Ospreay, the tiger suplex off the top rope, the series of counters from an Oscutter to a Lebell Lock, and the staredown with the elbow pad removal. I want to mention the dodging of a Hidden Blade to hit a running knee from Danielson, loved that. All of these moments were great. In my notes though, I did eventually end up writing three things down in all caps. First, “TRIANGLE HOLD STYLES CLASH”. Yeah, that’s awesome. There was also the finishing stretch with “HE JUST HIT A TIGER DRIVER 91 ON DANIELSON”. I think that speaks for itself as something wild. Thankfully he took it as safely as he could, that is to say “I bet his shoulder hurts like hell”. Then, the best of them all: “KNEE OSCUTTER REVERSAL”. This was simply perfect, what a reversal for the Oscutter, and what a running knee it was. Beautiful. Overall, it was a really nice match that pulled me round into loving it, even if Ospreay can be a bit much with some of his style for me. It works for a big match! I don’t love the finish really with the doctors, but it’s not super egregious. It was probably a Danielson idea, but I’d prefer a clean finish here. Maybe there’s a sequel on the horizon. Anyway, on a first watch, I’m concluding that “the greatest match in US history” is not quite that (some people just love a man’s particular style and that’s ok!), but is still pretty stellar.
4.5 STARS OUT OF 5
The Young Bucks (Nicholas Jackson & Matthew Jackson) def. FTR (Cash Wheeler & Dax Harwood) in a ladder match for the AEW Tag Team Championships in 21:34
Now, something completely different! There’s plenty of ladder-based fun here, like some fun dropkick spots and one of the Bucks heading up for the belts off of a rope run. A ladder bridge was a large part of this one, first with a moonsault by Wheeler and an EVP Trigger by the Bucks atop it. Wheeler had a great performance here, and he hit a tope onto Matthew that sent him through a table, which I loved. Shortly after, Harwood would take a hurricanrana through one too, which I did like but it was a tad awkward. I really loved the Power and Glory off the ladders, that was super awesome, and the Wheeler tope through a table at the end was wild! He went so fast! There was a scary moment, as Nicholas would 450 Wheeler through a table, but as Harwood tried to piledriver Matthew through the ladder bridge, it would give way. Fortunately, it seems everyone is ok. This was a pretty fun match all-in-all, and I really enjoyed the finish with big shit-eating grin Jack Perry helping the Young Bucks.
3.5 STARS OUT OF 5
Swerve Strickland (w/ Prince Nana) def. Samoa Joe (c) by pinfall for the AEW World Championship in 17:59
This is the moment I was waiting for! This was a pretty good match, Joe looked like an absolute beast in this one and I loved him for it. Swerve did his part too, selling very well for the big man. I especially loved his sell off the leg sweep, that was great. I do think the kickout from the Muscle Buster came a bit early in this match, it felt a tad flat for me, but it was soon followed by the House Call whilst Joe was in the ropes and the 450 Splash to the back of the head. I absolutely loved that spot. Those final moments were also great though, with Swerve doing whatever he has to do and with a great leap over Joe. That Swerve Stomp had me on my feet! The right man won here and it was absolutely essential here. What a great run from Samoa Joe though. Unfortunately, it is, indeed, Swerve’s House.
3.5 STARS OUT OF 5
Overall, this was a pretty good show! Not quite as good or as consistent as Revolution 2024, but another great PPV! This one is getting 4 STARS OUT OF 5 from me!

Find The Word Tag Game
Thanks to @goblin-writer for the tag! The WIP I'm checking is Tall Tales: Volume Three, and my words were gasp, moon, hidden, and season.
Gasp
“A witness.” The raven hopped down from the railing to stand on her lap, and she hesitantly brought her hand forward. The raven didn’t move, and gradually, she rested her hand on its head as if to pet it. When she made contact, a burst of images went off in her mind, all of them of John. Here he was being followed by a massive beast, there he was charging through flames at a man with a serpentine face, there he stood before the great world tree. She gasped and drew back from the raven, and the two stared at each other for a moment as tears began to form at the corners of her eyes.
Moon
I woke to find myself on the back porch. The moon was high and full. The shadows of the trees were beckoning. My guitar was shattered, the axe in my hand.
Hidden
Results had been disappointing so far. It wasn’t particularly difficult to find spells to do what she wanted, but they didn’t seem to get me anywhere. Michael had even managed to open a portal into the Deeper Realms, and the two of us spent a week there with tracking spells and a relic that all just led us in circles. Roderick believed that Rick had either been unmade or was being actively hidden from us; I refused to believe the former, and Michael believed we could muster up enough power between us to punch through whatever was doing the latter. There was little evidence to date to suggest he was right.
Season
(does not appear in Tall Tales: Volume 3 at this time)
I'd like to tag @abalonetea @saphoblin @ettawritesnstudies and authors like you! With the words breach, late, forward, and phone.

I never had any children but here are some of my favorite baby names I've come across and considered for if I ever had a child.
Traditionally masculine:
Roderick - Can be shortened to Roddy, Rick, or Ricky. Roderick means Glory or Ruler. Roddy McDowall's full first name. Also the name of one of the main characters from Edgar Allan Poe's Fall of the House of Usher. Roderick is also the name of the man who summoned and trapped Morpheus in the first issue / chapter / episode of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman. And a more obscure reference, Roderick is the name of Dr. Craven's father in the 1963 film, The Raven, starring Vincent Price. I would use this as a "King" name. ;-)
Jareth - A combination of Jerold and Gareth. David Bowie's character's name in Labyrinth.
Pipkin - An unrecorded Middle English name, possibly derived from Phillip. It is also the surname of one of the main characters in Ray Bradbury's The Halloween tree. Ray Bradbury used it as a cross between Pip, the hero from Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, and Pumpkin. Kin also means family. So you are saying "Pip is family." which is very sweet if you know the plot of The Halloween Tree. Kin can also mean "To be like" or "connected to." So the name (in reference to Great Expectations) also means "Like Pip."
Percy or Percival - One of King Arthur's knights, Percival, and the famous poet, Percy Shelley, husband of Mary Shelley (author of Frankenstein.)
Kit - Very old nickname for Christopher. Once was the nickname of the writer, Christopher Marlowe. Now heavily associated with the actor Kit Harington from Game of Thrones.
Jaskier - Polish. Actually means "Buttercup" but actually is considered a boy's name. Pronounced as Yas-key-er. The original Polish name of the bard from The Witcher novels. HIs name is sometimes translated to Dandelion in some of the English adaptations.
Vladislaus - I'd probably never really use this name except in absolutely very specific circumstances. This name comes from an early renaissance war hero and Prince of Eastern Europe. Vladislaus the Third of Wallachia.
________________________
Gender-free names that I like.
Loki - Means Mischief Maker. From the Norse God of Mischief, Fire, and invention. (and sometimes also ice). Marvel depicts him now as God of Stories which fits his mythological roots as God of Invention. In the Poetic and Prose Eddas Loki invented fishing nets. Loki is also the patron of orphans and outcasts, a sympathizer of the outsider. In mythology Loki can be any gender and in Marvel Loki has been portrayed by a man and a woman.
Rowan - The Rowan plant is supposed to be good luck and a pentacle made of Rowman and tied at the points with red string or ribbon protects against black magick.
______________________________
Traditionally feminine:
Gretchen - Old Germain Nickname for Marguerite and similar names. Marguerite was my mother's name, Rita being her nickname.
Gretchen was also the love interest in Goethe's Faust and ultimately saved his soul in Faust Part 2.
Jessamy - can be shortened to Jess or Jesse or even sometimes May. It's similar to Jessica but derives out of Jasmine.
Evie - Eve was (according to the Abrahamic mythos) the first woman. Evie is also short for "evening." Evie was the name of the hero in the 2022 film The invitation. It can also be short for Evelyn but I prefer Evie to Evelyn.
Shelley - Traditional girl's name and the married name of author Mary Shelley, writer of Frankenstein. Also the surname of the poet Percy Shelley.
Wilhelmina - The old version of Wima. Can have the nickname Mina or Will. And I think Will is a cute nickname for a girl ever since I heard the song "The Will to love" from W.I.T.C.H. ________________________________ Twin names: Masculine Twins: Jareth and Geralt. Geralt is the first hero of The Witcher novels. _________________________ Feminine Twin names: Gretchen and Jessamy _______________________ Masculine / feminine twin names: Percy and Shelley for the pun in creating the name Percy Shelley (the nineteenth century poet and husband of Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein). ___________________________ Gender-free: Loki and Rowan

Since I cannot get that Mummy (1999) dreamling AU out of my brain, here comes my reflections on who's who in said AU (for “The Mummy” and “The Mummy Returns”):
Hob would obviously be Rick (ex soldier, survivor, knows how to fight, was probably arrested while he was drunk in a bar, himbo, so in love with Dream, accepts to lead the way to Hamunaptra in spite of the fact he nearly died there the last time only because Dream asked (and saved his life but he probably would have done it anyway), basically would follow Dream to the end of the world (including the Scorpion King’s lost Oasis))
Dream would be Evie (smart, kind of awkward, likes to be right, actually passionate (although he tries to keep a cold/stiff demeanor), so in love with Hob (though doesn’t want to acknowledge it at first), doesn’t know how to fight but would still fight anyone and anything that dares threaten Hob - also he always dresses in black no matter the weather and has a pet Raven named Matthew because I said so!)
Death would be Johnathan (yes they don’t exactly have the same temper but she too has a sense of humour - and kind of likes to (gently) annoying her brother. She is friendly, adaptive and adventurous. She found they Key to Hamunaptra, she’s the reason Dream and Hob met in the first place, and she probably knows what’s up between her brother and their new friend right from the start.)
Roderick Burgess as Imhotep (who was condemn to endure the Curse of Hom Dai as a punishment for trying to revive his dead son (and tries to do it again when he return as an immortal creature)
The Corinthian as a mixt between Beni and Dr. Allen Chamberlain (less of a soldier and more of an Egyptologist. Never met Hob but shares history with Dream (they strongly dislike each other). He is smart and suave and found a way to Hamunaptra by himself (probably assassinating a few people in the process) and leads the American team at least partly to piss Dream off. The American team is made of some of the Collectors (except they are not serial killers but greedy archeologists))
Lucienne as Dr.Terence Bey (curator of the Cairo Museum of Antiquities, secretly member of a society set to prevent Roderick’s return, and Dream’s boss (I just love the idea of Lucienne being the boss in this one!). Oh, yeah, and in this version she survives!)
Ethel Cripps as the warden of Cairo Prison (who accepts to release Hob in exchange for a percentage of whatever riches they may find in Hamunaptra. Her son John Dee may be the one to resurrect Imothep (again) in the second movie in order to avenge her mother if she died during the expedition (and he holds Dream responsible for her dead).
Fiddler's Green as Winston Havelock and Izzy Buttons (who doesn’t die when his plane crashes so he can come back when the mummy returns but this time with a hot-air balloon)
As for Ardeth Bay, I am not quite sure. I thought of Rose (a bit young maybe? and I have no idea what to do with Jed in that scenario...) or maybe Alex Burgess (a descendant of Roderick making sure his ancestor doesn’t come back? but he could as well be a descendant whose ancestors never ceased to try and set Roderick free? (then there could be a subplot where Paul is one of the Medjai fighting to keep Roderick from resurrecting and they could fall in love Romeo and Juliet style?)), but in the end i think Johanna Constantine makes more sense (her job is basically to fight demons and other creatures of the like).
Finally, Lucifer would be no other than the Scorpion King (a powerful king with an entire army at their command...)
Also, In "The Return of the Mummy”, I could see Rose and Jed be distant relatives of Dream and Death (I mean it’s canon!). Jed being passionate about History and Egypt and ending up putting the Bracelet of Anubis on BUT I also really love a version in which Hob ends up wearing the bracelet (tell me he wouldn’t!) and thus gets kidnapped and Dream is REALLY pissed off about it! (in this version, nobody warns Hob that he has to enter the pyramid before the sun sets on the third day so he is all relieved when he gets reunited with Dream (who knows) in the Oasis only for Dream to panic because “why are you stopping to hug me? Start running to that Pyramid!!”). But then I don’t know what roles Rose and Jed could have in the story and I would like to include them!
...and that is all i can think of for now! Don’t hesitate to add if you have other ideas😊

I think the 90s House of Usher movie lets the incest be canon!
The number of adaptations is insane. I was going to list them, until I realized there were too many. There aren't just movies and the miniseries this year, there also seem to be horror anthology series episodes and other things.
I would love to hear from anyone who has seen any of these and has any info on 1) Whether Roderick and Madeline are characters in it, 2) whether they are shippable, and 3) whether they are canon.
The only version I have seen is this one from 2006. It is not a very good movie. It is, like may of these others, a loose modernized adaptation:
Three years after her lover, Rick Usher, and her best friend, Maddy Usher, had suddenly disappeared from her life without explanation, Jill Masters receives a phone call with news of Maddy's death. Her last wish was for Jill to attend her funeral. Conflicted, Jill returns to the house of Usher, a remote New England enclave. Her love affair with Rick is rekindled as she learns he suffers from the same malady that robbed his twin sister, Maddy, of her sharp mind before taking her life. His affliction is manifested in a rare nerve condition, which renders him hyper-sensitive. Under the watchful eye of the caretaker, Nurse Thatcher, Jill appears to be haunted by the ghost of Maddy, and the secret of the house of Usher is exposed
This is not a movie I would probably recommend for R/M, however it does have a very visually striking ending for them that made an impression on me. I would call it canon and have classified it as such all along. I would even call it endgame. But a horror sort of endgame.

PLAYBOI CARTI
From Atlanta, Georgia, Playboi Carti is one of hip-hop’s most influential rappers currently in 2024. His influence extends past music and into the fashion world. His latest album from 2020, Whole Lotta Red, was his revolutionary album that included a dark punk, goth and vampire aesthetic as his concept. Musically, it was more polarizing than his past albums and the hip hop genre, and also rockstar inspired to complement his aesthetic when he would perform live. The album performed live was a spectacle of chaos, rebellion, avant-garde, and overall innovative; that makes Playboi Carti push boundaries which gives him the edge over a lot of artists of being influential. His style influenced and became prominent amongst the younger Gen Z who are listeners of hip hop and the streetwear space.
Playboi Carti isn’t just shaping the future of music, he’s cultivating a movement that blends sound and style into a cohesive vision. His ability to push boundaries while staying authentic has solidified himself as a leader in both music and fashion, making him one of the most influential figures of his generation. Since he hasn’t released an album since 2020 and is mostly off social media, his cult-like fanbase is waiting for his next album drop, creating hype, and are always on the lookout for what he has in store.
Here are three of his recent styles and outfits ahead of his long awaited album that showcase his blend of high fashion, avant garde, streetwear in dark, rebellious, and polarizing aesthetic styling -
