Italian F-35 fighters complete NATO Air Policing mission in Iceland
The Italian Air Task Force - Iceland mission has ended its commitment to defend NATO's northern flank.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 07/17/2022 - 08:00 AM in Military
A flag-raising ceremony took place on July 4 at Keflavik Air Base in Iceland, marking the end of NATO's Air Policing mission called Operation "Northern Lightning III", which began on April 30 and aimed to preserve Iceland's airspace, which does not have its own air defense capabilities.
Four F-35A aircraft of the Italian Air Force, 60 days of operation, about 130 women and men, 268 takeoffs, 473 hours of flight, 28 of interception: these are the numbers of the Task Force Air-Island, the contingent of the Italian Air Force deployed to defend the northern flank of NATO.
The Air Task Force, which reports directly to COVI (Operational Command of the Summit of Joint Forces), along with the Air Policing activity, carried out joint training activities with the Icelandic Coast Guard and NATO means deployed at the Icelandic airport, but also exercises with naval units that have contributed to the maintenance of high levels of interoperability between the forces of the Atlantic Alliance.
This was the third redistribution of the Italian F-35A aircraft of the 32nd Wing of Amendola at Keflavik Air Force Base for air policing activities, the longest in Icelandic territory among those carried out so far by the Italian Air Force that had already operated in Iceland in 2013, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.
In Keflavik alone, in 2019, F-35A aircraft were first used in an Air Policing mission, granting Italy the privilege of being the first Alliance country to use a 5th generation NATO aircraft in such an operation.
Air Policing (AP) is a mission that NATO has equipped itself with since the mid-1950s and consists of integrating the respective national systems of member countries into a single NATO air and missile defense system. Air Policing activity has been carried out since peacetime and consists of the continuous surveillance of NATO airspace preventing potential violations of it.

The ‘desert pink’ Tornado, number ZG750 was based at RAF Lossiemouth with XV(R) Squadron, which saw active service during Operation Granby, the UK’s codename for the Gulf War. The aircraft carries 11 ‘battle honours’ on its tail, recalling the Tornado’s almost continuous service on operations worldwide since 1991.
