Switzerland Planning To Retire F-5s In 2027
F-5

Swiss commanders have outlined plans to retire the Northrop F-5 Tiger combat aircraft in 2027, bringing to an end its famous international aerobatic team, the Patrouille Suisse.
As the Swiss Air Force prepares for the arrival of the first Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter in 2028, commanders have concluded that the service has “neither the need, personnel, finances or infrastructure,” to keep the F-5 Tiger fleet in operation during the transition to the F-35, service chiefs declared on March 15.
But the service’s F/A-18 Hornet fleet will continue to operate until 2030 once the F-35 has been introduced.
Commanders have already concluded that the Tigers cannot be used for air policing because of their outdated sensors and armaments. So the 25-strong fleet has been relegated to secondary duties, including target towing, training and aerobatic displays. Tiger operations, officials say, are currently relieving the F/A-18 Hornet fleet of such secondary tasks, extending Hornet life.
The F-5’s retirement will bring an end to the Patrouille Suisse aerobatic team, which has flown the F-5 since 1994, replacing Hawker Hunters.
Officials say they still want to retain a flight demonstration team “to demonstrate the work, capabilities and importance of the Air Force to a wide audience.” But the most sensible solution is to make the existing Swiss Air Force PC-7 display team—flying the Pilatus PC-7 turboprop trainer—the flagship aerobatic team for the service.
Maintaining the Patrouille Suisse’s operation of the F-5 beyond 2027 would demand investments to be made in ejection seats, aircraft avionics and navigation. At least 12 aircraft would need to be kept operational—10 single-seat and two twin-seat aircraft. Officials say such an investment would cost around 9 million Swiss francs ($10.2 million).
The plans will now be discussed with Security Policy Committees in the Swiss Parliament.
The pensioning off of the Patrouille Suisse could mark the beginning of the end for some of Europe’s best-known aerobatic teams, which are reliant on increasingly older aircraft. The Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows fly Hawks that are around 50 years old—the team is the last operator of the BAE Systems T1 model Hawk in the UK. Spain’s Patrulla Aguila team continues to fly the CASA C-101 Aviojet even though the type has been withdrawn from the training role. Italy had planned to introduce Leonardo’s M345 as the mount for the Frecce Tricolori that flies the Aermacchi MB339, but the transition has yet to take place due to the delayed introduction of the M345 into Italian service.

𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢 𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗧: 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗼𝗿
The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, aka the Red Arrows.  Synchronization is a beautiful thing, ain't it?
To fly in Diamond Nine Formation at 300-500 kts (345-575 mph), with only about 12 to 20 feet of space between each plane, requires a tremendous amount of skill, precision, & talent.  A lot of things must be in perfect order to pull off this stunt, and it's not just up to the 9 men and women sitting in the cockpits.
For the bigger the object in the sky, the more the weight, which means more inertia, which makes it much harder to maneuver these vehicles so close together in the air.  Thus, the BAE Systems Hawk T1 aircraft's engine must be manufactured precisely according to the spec of its masterminds at Rolls Royce.  And a team of mechanics must make sure not even so much as nut and bolt is over-tightened, or disaster can ensue.  And the essential ground team of support staff must be in constant communication with the pilots in the sky, continually monitoring plane and pilot integrity, weather conditions, the unforeseen.
Without question, the more people you can get on board your team, working together towards a common goal, the more powerful everyone becomes.  A strong team with unified purpose represents what any warrior, from any background, in any army, from any country is capable of accomplishing.
For when everyone is on the same page, working in tandem, we become faster than a speeding bullet, stronger than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.
And we become an unstoppable force, a thing of beauty...one heck of a sight to behold.

Red Arrows will fly with Hawk jets for at least another 11 years
The UK Ministry of Defense will invest £695 million in Hawk training jets and the Red Arrows.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 04/01/2022 - 20:12 in Demonstration Squadrons, Military
The UK Ministry of Defense is investing £695 million over the next 11 years to provide in-service support to the Royal Air Force (RAF) Hawk T2 training aircraft fleet and Hawk T1 jets piloted by the Red Arrows.
This will support hundreds of jobs at the Valley RAF Base in Anglesey, North Wales, which houses a fleet of 28 Hawk T2 jets. These aircraft are a vital training asset to provide rapid jet training for pilots in training and form a key part of the UK Military Flight Training System (UK MFTS).
Tumblr media
UK MFTS provides aircraft, synthetics and training devices to train the next generation of frontline crew members of all three Services. After graduation, these pilots will fly on the F-35B Lightning and Typhoon fighters.
“This contract will provide aircraft support to maintain the delivery of pilot training and the Red Arrows in the future. He highlights our commitment to providing the highest quality training and aircraft to future pilots of our Armed Forces," said Jeremy Quin, Minister of Defense Acquisitions.
Tumblr media
The Hawk Integrated Support Solution comprises two separate contracts signed by the Defense Equipment and Support (DE&S) procurement arm of the British Ministry of Defense. These contracts will provide support for used Hawk T2 and T1 Hawks aircraft ?? by the RAF stunt team, the Red Arrows.
The Hawk contract with BAE Systems, valued at £590 million, will cover all support elements of the structure of the Hawk T2 aircraft and for the Red Arrows team. This work will ensure that the Hawk aircraft continues as a global ambassador of the United Kingdom.
Tumblr media
In addition, a separate £105 million contract for engine support was made with Rolls-Royce.
"This is an important milestone for the UK MFTS and the culmination of many months of hard work by the DE&S team. Through this investment, we will continue to train our pilot students to become the best in the market. The announcement represents excellent news for Anglesey, our workforce, and for sustaining our core business of providing world-class training for our future fighter pilots. The Hawk T2 is a fantastic platform to train our Typhoon and Lightning pilots, preparing them for frontline demands; this level of continuous investment ensures that the UK Defense maintains our military advantage in the contested air environment," said Air Vice Marshal Ellard, Director of Air Combat at DE&S.
Tumblr media
The new contract will initially guarantee more than 500 highly qualified jobs for BAE Systems and its maintenance partner Babcock International. They are mainly based on the Valley RAF Base, with a small number of BAE Systems support functions located on its other sites in the UK.
