This is just a theory, but I think I've figured out why parents are quick to dismiss their children's (usually new) tastes, interests, etc. as 'just a phase', yet cling to old memories of when their kid was a baby/toddler and liked avocado or w/e.

You ever see that one post pointing out that you've known your parents your whole life, but they've only known you for half of theirs? Your parents (provided they're your biological parents, or, if they adopted you, did so when you were really little), have been around longer than you, and known you since you were small, and as such remember things about your earliest days that you don't because, again, you were a baby. They remember that time you brought a potted plant inside, or when you threw away the cupcake you got for your first birthday to try eating the candle instead, like I apparently did, when you can't recall those moments.

As such, they have a certain image of you, and whenever you do something to stray from the version of yourself that exists in their mind, whether it's permanent or temporary, and ESPECIALLY when you're still growing up and developing as your own person, it's difficult for them to process. They remember a version of you that you can't even recall, and they can't process this illusion of you doing, saying, or wearing something that strays from their perception of you, this version of you that doesn't even exist anymore.

As much as some (not necessarily ALL) parents like saying stuff like 'I know you better than you know yourself!' or something similar, when it comes down to it, they ultimately don't, and CAN'T know everything about you--your innermost thoughts in every situation, your struggles, your view of yourself, of others, they weren't there to see you leaving a love letter in your crush's locker and shyly waiting around the corner to see them find it, and see how they'd react. It was just you, in the moment, in your own head.

Try as they might, parents can't possibly know EVERYTHING about you, at all times, so they fall back on their memories of times long gone by.

...so I'm a tyrant for not wanting to see kids get shot in their classrooms anymore as America continues adamantly refusing to admit that it has a gun problem? 'kay then.
