i would like to say that i fall more in love with the idea of poly rhink every day. like, especially Rhett. the way he talks about Jessie, i would never want that to not be real in favor of rhink. and Link gets so mushy about Christy. like, i just fall deeper and deeper into a world of they love each other and their wives.

like, you can't tell me that EMOTIONALLY they are not already at that point (and been there) and just don't realize it. i just hope one day they can be free enough to act on it physically however feels right and that Jessie and Christy will stay by their sides.

i don't know if this is a popular opinion among rhink shippers but it is mine.

can you remember any instances of the boys saying they have strained relationships with eachothers' wives? not saying i don't believe you, just..... wow. crazy if true. it would say a lot about how they behave in gme (like link saying 'this is our one chance'......)

The most recent one, a few months ago, is how Link admitted that he and Jessie can barely “survive” each other. Then, after realising it was not good for his image, he said they are like brother and sister who fight / are annoyed by each other all the time. He tried to make it look like there was some hard love deep underneath but he could not even convince himself. A few days later he said on an EB that Jessie approached him to tell him she liked a song he chose to play as a DJ and Link was thunderstruck that she came to tell him a positive thing. They danced a little to it. The way he said it, this was like the peak of their relationship.

Link has also made numerous objectifying remarks at Jessie’s expense throughout the years, sometimes causing Rhett to react. Link has made it clear he does not consider Jessie attractive or clever enough and he also has expressed doubt at the possibility of her and Rhett having sexual compatibility. Link gets visibly angry when Rhett talks about Jessie too much or too lovingly and he will either seethe or say something sarcastic to hurt Rhett when this happens.

Link has made rude jokes that Jessie might secretly be more into him than Rhett.

Once, Jessie video called Rhett during EB. Rhett accepted the call. Link started overreacting about whether Jessie was calling Rhett naked, trying to cover the screen with his hands, his paranoia / jealousy reaching such levels. Jessie’s raised voice was audible then: “I AM COMPLETELY CLOTHED”.

Once, a genuinely irritated Link told Rhett: “My wife does not even like you all that much”.

Link has said that he once described an idea he had to Christy and she responded: “Is this really you or is it Rhett talking inside your mind?”

Link has confirmed that Christy believes Rhett has an unacceptably profound influence on him. He has also confirmed they have had fights over this matter.

Link has said Christy has repeatedly accused Link of neglecting the family problems by hiding in his “Mythical Castle” with Rhett.

Now, there is also something that you must take with a grain of salt because it was a rumour and I can’t really back it. Back a few years ago when the whole Rhink / MB community was larger and more active and more inquisitive, there were talks about a big party they had in which apparently Christy raised hell, she made a fuss about something. The rumours were that it had to do with Rhett and I think there was also a leg injury involved but I honestly don’t remember more or I can in no way guarantee this is accurate. Just leaving it there. Maybe the relevant posts can be found deep deep in my archive but this is no easy task.

These are some examples but the general hostility can be concluded by watching the entirety of their content throughout the years.

okay but let’s just pretend for a minute that rhett and link and christy and jessie are in this universe. high society london, where ladies get courted by all the eligible men, where the society column is all the rage with its hot gossip, and where fancy parties are used as disguises for families to pawn off their daughters to suitors during the social season.

like rhett would be the duke of something or other, part of the wealthy mclaughlin family that lives in the big white house with all the acreage. his dad is gone all the time and his mom runs the house, keeps he and his brother in line, and makes sure they’re fit to be married.

link would be a duke as well, the only son to his widowed mother. the only heir to his father’s fortune and good looking to boot, he’d be the hottest suitor all the ladies fawn over during the social season. he and rhett are best friends because of course even in this universe they’ve known each other since they were kids.

so rhett has been courting jessie lane since the start of this social season. she was debuted and favored for her beauty and grace and he immediately wanted her. he got her.

and link has been courting christy since the year before. she’s shy and sweet and he loves her, he does. he’s gonna ask for her hand at the end of this year’s season, in june.

they go to all the parties at all the big houses with all the people in their social circles. every party is always a huge affair and everybody that’s somebody is there. the girls get pampered and prettied up in their expensive dresses, and the boys in their best suits. their friends gossip and tell them all about the boys and the girls they’re after, all the current scandalous news like that bridgerton girl and that duke of hastings fellow.

but of course, they’ve got a little scandal of their own.

rhett loves jessie and is sure they’ll be married by the end of the year, but rhett also loves link. link is head over heels for christy and already has the plans for his proposal, but he also loves rhett. and the girls, well, they’ve got a thing of their own, too.

at these parties, the boys often sneak off to big empty rooms under the pretense of going out for a smoke or something. in these rooms rhett pins link to the nearest surfaces and kisses him quiet, sinks to his knees and carefully undoes link’s pants, sucks him off so good link has to muffle his moans into his stuffy collar or else someone will hear.

other times link gets rhett stripped from the waist down, everything bunched on his thighs just enough, and link fingers himself open like the proper society boy that he is. then he gets rhett’s cock in him and rides him like the pony he got for his twenty first birthday.

it’s almost always desperate and rushed, hurried along before someone comes looking for them. they’ve almost been caught many times by some lord or lady or another, and it never fails to make it more exciting.

the girls, again, have their own thing as well. many a time has rhett gone looking for jessie only to find her in a bathroom with her head ducked up under christy’s expensive dress and face buried between her thighs. and other times, jessie with her dress hiked up and her fancy underthings pulled to the side so christy can really get at her.

there have been times one or both of the boys have found themselves in the middle. link in search of rhett once walked in on rhett fucking jessie while his girl watched. or the time he got christy off just to the sounds of rhett fucking his girl. the one time link got wrecked while he fucked jessie and christy watched was one of the highlights of their social season.

of course there’s the angst of it all, too. rhett watching link dance with christy, all soft and sweet and romantic, and getting supremely jealous because that should be him dancing with link. that should be him holding link and caressing his cheek and kissing him, all out in the open where anyone could see instead of having to do it in private with no music or an audience. that should be him that gets to walk take link home in his carriage, walk him to his door, kiss his cheek all proper like and chaste.

link isn’t oblivious. he gets jealous too. he wants to be the one that has rhett mclaughlin coming to his door to court him with flowers and gifts, instead of rhett barging in unannounced because he’s basically family. he wants to be the one that gets all blushy and giggly and shy under rhett’s sultry gaze. and he wants to be the one that gets his name in the society column for forming an attachment with rhett.

what they have works just fine. it’s scandalous and would ruin their families if anyone ever found out that not only are rhett and link with each other, they’re with each other’s girls, too. they’d be the talk of the town, the only names in the column, and a disgrace to their families.

so it stays a secret. the sneaking around and the jealousy remains.

Experiments - Part 1

“I’m sorry, you want what?!” Rhett asked, staring at Link’s rosy cheeks. Link’s Adam’s apple bobbed and his blush deepened.

“You heard me,” he said quietly, shifting in his seat.

“Uh-uh. What I heard was ‘I want to give you head’ and that can’t be right,” Rhett said, his voice rising as his panic did. He felt like he’d been dropped into an alternative universe.

“No. You heard right. That’s what I said,” Link confirmed, lifting his chin a bit to show he’d meant what he’d said.

“B—but… I—Link, what the fuck?” Rhett stammered, hoping for Link to burst into laughter and tell him that he was either insane or dreaming.

“Goodness gracious, Rhett. If I’d known this was gonna be such a big deal I wouldn’t have asked. But Christy thought—”

“I’m sorry, how is Christy involved in your sudden desire to suck my dick?”

Link frowned at him and rolled his eyes. “I’m not a cheater. She’s the one that suggested it!  And just so you know, I didn’t expect it to happen now. Obviously, you’d have to talk to Jessie first.”

Rhett’s mouth opened and closed slowly, and he was increasingly sure he was dreaming. Link huffed and got up from his desk chair.

“You know the whole… bisexual thing?” he said, walking aimlessly around the office as he always did when he was particularly nervous.

Of course, Rhett knew. After six months in therapy, Link had come out last year to the surprise of literally no one in their close circle of friends. His admission was still met with the sensitivity and unwavering support that Link had needed after being the last one to realize that his love of John Mayer was not limited to the man’s creative output. To Rhett, it hadn’t been that big of a deal. He was happy that Link could live more authentically and be more in touch with all the facets of his personality, but it had no real impact on their day-to-day lives.

Until a few minutes ago when Link had—in the middle of their shared office—suddenly inquired whether Rhett would be willing to let Link go down on him. That bit Rhett had a little trouble wrapping his head around.

“Everyone’s been so great about that. Truly. Especially Christy. She’s been—” Link’s face turned a shade of red Rhett had never seen before. “She’s been very accommodating with toys and roleplays and stuff…”

Rhett felt like slamming his palms over his ears and shouting “la la la” at the top of his lungs. Link’s sex life was literally that—Link’s. Rhett had never particularly wanted to hear about it. But now his mind was filled with filthy images of his best friend’s wife wearing a strap-on and going to town on said best-friend.

“Link, please,” Rhett moaned and waved his hands in front of his face, hoping that Link would understand his discomfort. He was squirming in his seat, trying desperately not to think about Link and toys. 

Link and toys. Toys and Link. Toys in Link… Fuck!

“Yeah. Sorry. But what I— well, what we’ve come to realize is that it’s not the same. And since we’re quite firmly planning on abiding by the ‘til death do us part’ bit in our vows, she thought it would be unfair if I’d never got to experience certain things.”

“Huh,” Rhett said and scratched his beard, staring blindly over Link’s head. That actually made sense. “Okay. I get that. Kinda. But why me?”

“Who else? I mean…  We’ve always had that kinda weird intimacy thing. Almost like we’re parts of the same person. So, it would be almost like doing it to myself. And don’t tell me you wouldn’t do that if you could,” Link said, laughing. Rhett arched a brow and chuckled. Link was right. He would.

“I wouldn’t want it to be a stranger. That’s too nerve-wracking. And what if—” Link paused and bit on his lip.

“What if what?” Rhett asked. Despite his initial reaction, he already thought Link was making some good points.

“What if I fell for that person? That would be… really fucking unfortunate. With you, that’s not an issue.”

Rhett was surprised by the visceral reaction his body had to Link’s words—it was like a gut punch. He turned to face his desk and fiddled with his pen to hide the sudden gut-wrenching ache. Link seemed to be oblivious to it—he was still prattling on.

“If I haven’t fallen in love with you in the past 36 years, it’s not gonna happen now, right? And Christy agrees that you’d be the best choice. It would be just one time. Obviously. And then--”

“Yeah, okay,” Rhett interrupted him. “I’ll talk to Jessie tonight.”

“Really?” Link’s eyes widened and a hopeful smile lit up his features.

“Really. But if she’s okay and we go through with this… You owe me big time.”

“Definitely!” Link hurried to assure. He stepped up to Rhett and took his hands into his own. “Thank you. For real. This means a lot to me.”

Rhett felt the warmth of Link’s touch radiating all the way to the top of his head and down to his toes. He tried to swallow surreptitiously around the lump that had suddenly appeared in his throat.

“Sure, brother.”

A text message later that night from Rhett to Link. Jessie said okay. When and where are we doing this?

A Very Mythical Morning by Bert Kreischer is surprisingly intriguing

I am talking about the episode of Something's Burning which hosted Rhett and Link 5 months ago... You might say I am a little late to this one but I just watched it and found it to offer insight in something important.

You will call me Captain Obvious for this but I didn't know Rhett was born in a town called Macon (GA), which means this was his inspiration for the Macon Brothers and Hazel Macon in the Hazel lore. I am not an American so this flew over my head and I was trying to find a symbolic meaning in the surname.

Anyway moving on to the main dish immediately: as they drink to their long friendship and their freshly emerging friendship with Bert, Rhett picks at Link by comparing him to Bert and his many talents, which Link does not possess, and therefore Bert has all the prospects to become great friends with Rhett. Link is riled up immediately as usual and gives his blessing to Rhett and Bert, stressing that unlike him who is a good friend and thus has a large pool of friends, Rhett is in bad need of other friends besides him. Rhett can't hide his frustration at Link's revenge. Link then provides an example of pulling their newest friend aside and asking him to befriend Rhett because he needed another friend. At this point I was like "ha ha classic petty jealous Link"..... but then Rhett said: "WE HAD SET A TEA TIME BEFORE YOU ASKED HIM THAT".......... which means... it was not just a joke. This actually happened lol The whole ordeal is weird so I am wondering how and why this went down. The first thing I wonder about is how can Link have so many friends and Rhett next to none when, let's be real, Rhett is more socially skilled even if he is more of an introvert. I would expect a more balanced out situation. It's been established that Link has more friends but I doubt Rhett is so incapable of pulling a friend. Maybe he can't keep up easily with his friendships due to his workaholicness and his occasional arrogance, however I would expect Link to have a similar problem due to his lack of filter and occasional rudeness. True enough, what Link did here was neither polite nor healthy. Two married middle aged friends, the one asking somebody to become a friend with the other person??? Unless said person was locked in a cellar for a year and needed someone to pity him and reinitiate him to human interactions, this is some damn strange dynamic. After some consideration and all the RandL and Rhink data I have stored in my mind, here's the thing, I think it was Link's imposition of authority! Look at this unreal piece of dialogue:

Rhett: That's not true! I am playing golf with this new friend- Link: That's because I pulled him aside. There was this guy, whom I saw Rhett was hitting it off with, I pulled him aside and I said, you know, he needs a friend, he needs somebody to play golf with- Rhett: Before you asked him that we had already set a tea time. Before you even asked him that! Link: (ignores him) I was like "make sure he follows through with that cuz he needs somebody else in his life besides me". Rhett: *takes a sip from his drink bitterly*

We can say that at face value Link has said many times that Rhett needs more in his life than, not him, but his work. Rhett has also been complaining about too little time with Link way more than Link has done the same. One could assume that Link is the bee's knees and Rhett runs after him. Here's the thing, though, I don't buy it. First of all, we even have been told that Link is notorious for bombing social interactions to the point that he also affects Rhett's and Christy's social lives, how is this compatible with everything else claimed here??? Again, I am not questioning that Link has more friends than Rhett but at the same time I am not buying that Link is the ultimate social butterfly of the town who genuinely pities his introvert, lonely friend and wants to help him get out there. It is hilarious that me writing this coincided with this little exchange in the current EB where Rhett points out how Link stresses he has friends that are not Rhett’s friends. This is not how an extrovert comfortable in his skin acts.

We should not forget how Link came to be like this. He wasn’t always exactly like this. In fact, in the very same interview he talked again about how he used to be an overthinker and then there was a turning point and he decided to not think as much, go with the flow and enjoy the present. He was referring to the job in particular but we know this was a greater change affecting all aspects of his life. Furthermore, Link once said that the reason he was expanding his social circle so much was in order to not “go under” if something happened to Rhett. Of course, as I doubt Link fears Rhett will collapse at any moment, I think the most accurate phrasing should be that Link started making friends in fear something could happen to his friendship with Rhett. Further back in time, Link complained multiple times, even in GMM, that Rhett was taking him too much for granted. This felt like one of Link’s biggest insecurities in life in general. This does not sound like the most irresistible guy in LA who wants to also get his awkward friend out of his shell.

I believe that also Link’s new hobby of running away completely alone in camping trips is the other side of the same coin. Although these two things seem like exact opposites, they stem from the same need. Link needed to define himself out of his relationship with Rhett. He needed to learn to seek and feel fulfilled by other people’s company and also he needed to learn how to enjoy his own company and find peace with himself. He is really doing a great work regarding this but the problem is that when your motive is actually to just live without relying on one certain guy 24/7, this means that it is very easy for you to relapse at having that guy at the center of your existence. Let alone if you constantly feel like rubbing it in verbally to the guy in question, then I am getting suspicious about whether this great work goes beyond skin deep. To be honest, despite all this ongoing respectable work on Link’s part, I don’t believe yet that his change is resolute and definitive.

Again, the root cause of all this behaviour is that Link wants to establish a life beyond Rhett. He wants to engrave in his brain that there is life after or regardless of Rhett. He’s hinted for years that he either felt like a third wheel (versus Ben or some of Rhett’s girlfriends) or feared that Rhett is still friends with him only for the sake of their career or warned Rhett openly that he was felt taken for granted or even felt perceived as a sidekick. The time he chose to send the notorious email of “either we really are friends or it’s over” could have been the herald of the turning point and all the changes his mentality unterwent. Could all this turmoil and transformation have been caused purely out of a need to keep a platonic friend? You never know but you know me, and me has… doubts.

Either you see this platonically or romantically, with all this in mind, it seems to me that Link did the bold and impolite move to ask from that friend to befriend poor lonely Rhett as an action of self perseverance. The key phrase he said was “whom I saw Rhett hitting it off with”, well if you saw them hitting it off already, then why did you interfere, dude? Me thinks they were hitting it off really well and when Link noticed this he felt his insecurities raise their ugly head again. If he has now a big circle of friends but Rhett attempts to do the same instead of waiting for his attention, then this could be a danger of alienation. Fearing that Rhett could find his “new layer” in this new guy, Link felt the need to establish what the new dynamic should be. So he took the new guy in the corner and made it clear: I want you to befriend him to fill in holes I am not willing to. I am his friend A and you should become his friend B. This is my initiative and is approved by me. You are not becoming friends behind my back, I am making the two of you friends, I am offering you a small place in his life because I am irreplaceable for him but I have other things to cater to. Know your place.

Needless to say, if this is true in the slightest, it is toxic as hell but I am always impressed by the volatility of Link’s sentiment, it almost feels like it sprang out of a book.

Coffee (angsty version)

He doesn’t drink coffee anymore. It’s not good for his stomach. That’s what he’s told everyone. But it’s not entirely true. He still drinks coffee. But only on some nights. Only when he absolutely has to stay awake. When he has to use every weapon in his arsenal to keep the dreams at bay.

They started small. Once in a while, he had a dream where they sat on the office couch, side by side as usual. But what was not usual was the hand on his thigh. In the dream, it felt normal. It was expected, welcomed, soothing. After he woke up he could still feel the weight of it on his skin. After he woke up, he missed it. But the feeling was gone by the first light of morning and it was easy to brush off the dreams as just one of those things. Nothing to be concerned about.

Then the dreams changed. They were still sitting on the couch but now there were words whispered into his ear—low, breathy, dirty words. And the hand on his thigh? Let’s just say that it had moved north.

Even those dreams he was able to chase away soon after he woke up.

He never thought about them during the day.

Then they started doing the vlogs. It was something new, something exciting. They were giddy about it. About spending time just the two of them.

The dreams went on overdrive. Every time they filmed, the next night he would wake up tangled in his sheets, rock-hard and aching for the touch of the man that had been his best friend for the last thirty-five years.

Those dreams were harder to shake. Those dreams penetrated his psyche and made a home. He’d notice himself getting distracted while they were working. He got caught up watching him. Watching his hands move. Watching him bite his lip when he was concentrating. Watching his hips.

God, those hips. There were too many days when he almost walked up to him and grabbed that slender waist. He could see it so clearly. How there would be a surprised gasp and then an awkward giggle. It has to be a bit, a joke, a prank, right? But then he’d get on his knees and his thumbs would dig into those hips and rub and press and his mouth...

Soon enough it all became unbearable. He told his wife one night after she woke up and found him in the kitchen drinking his second cup of coffee. She was understanding and sweet, just as he had expected. She offered her warmth and her words to make him feel better and he appreciated it. Of course, he did. But all it did was make him feel worse about the whole situation.

“It’s gonna blow over,” he promised his wife not believing a word of it but wishing nonetheless.

“I know, baby,” she said, kissed him and went back to bed. He drank a third cup of coffee and waited for the morning.

Time went on. He was managing. The nights when he barely slept seemed to be more spread out. Sometimes even a week went by without the horror of waking up crying for someone who wasn’t his wife.

Then the camping trip happened. It had been decided on months ago—before the dreams had started. He tried to get out of it but despite his best efforts, he finds himself laying inside a sleeping bag, inches away from the person that haunts his dreams. He is afraid to fall asleep. He is afraid he’s going to wake up moaning for him.

“You could talk to him, you know?” his wife said before the trip. “Now would be a good opportunity.”

“I don’t want him to know!”

“It might help you, though. And he would understand.”

His wife might be right but he just couldn’t do it. Couldn’t just come out and say that he—

“Rhett?”

His name form Link’s lips makes his heart jump into his throat and lodge itself there.

“Huh?”

“I need to tell you something.”

“Okay.”

“I talked with Jessie.”

No. No. No. No. Oh God no.

The sound of the zipper of the sleeping bag is so loud, he wants to cover his ears. Wants to cover his eyes, his face, his heart. He wants to hide his heart before it can be torn apart.

“Talked with Christy too,” Link whispers, his voice suddenly close to Rhett’s ear. Another zipper is opened.

Rhett’s breath gets caught. Hands on his body. Slipping under his t-shirt, into his hair. Heated lips pressing against his skin. A gasp—his or Link’s, he can’t tell.

“They say this is okay,” Link murmurs into his ear before sucking the lobe into his mouth.

“I’ve been waiting for years. Hoping for you to get here. To where I’ve been.”

“I want you,” Rhett doesn’t say the words, they burst out of him.

“Me too, baby.”

That night Rhett doesn’t need any coffee to stay up.

you’re speaking my language, anon, because ot4 is my weakness and i absolutely do have recs for you, though not as many as i wish i had, alas. 

greater than the sum by @pringlesaremydivision is probably THE definitive ot4 fic in my book. it gets the dynamic perfect, and prose in the fic is absolutely beautiful. 

time makes you bolder is another favorite of mine by the same author. i’m a little more hesitant to call it a true ot4 fic, but it does feature the wives and polyamory negotiations, and is just generally one of my favorite rhink oneshots.

i also feel compelled to mention the traveler by @the-average-bear bc it is my absolute favorite rhink fic of all time. it’s another fic that’s not, strictly speaking, an ot4 fic, but features the wives heavily and does feature ot4 as endgame. (that’s as much as i can say without giving away the plot, but PLEASE don’t be scared off by the “infidelity” tag bc it’s soooo good and it’s not infidelity in the way that you think.)

the hot tub by @missingparentheses is really, really, REALLY good as well if you want something that’s more unapologetic porn than the aforementioned fics.

@egocentrifuge also has some really good ot4 and/or polyamory stuff but it’s mostly on tumblr rather than ao3 so you’re probably better over looking through their fic tag, though it may take a little browsing bc i don’t know if they have a single tag for all of their ot4 or ot4-adjacent works.

Now that we know that Link was pretty chaste before marriage, his reaction to Rhett bringing up their "UFC Phase" in GMM 1125 kinda makes more sense
