"i can stay, if you want." martin to alex @gothamrains
I look at Martin somberly, and then take a long drink of my cuppa joe. It’s Halloween and Halloween is the one of the few nights of the year where spirits come out to roam. Most of those spirits leave him alone, but sometimes spirits who are stuck in the mortal world learn about him from friends or other spirits and come to him by the dozens. It’s a headache, especially now, when all he wants to do is watch investigation discovery or read crappy magazines.
And what’s worse is, Martin is treating him differently because he knows that he’s suffering today. Alex hates when others see him in pain over this. It’s so abnormal. However, Alex does appreciate him not teasing as much, because there are around eight ghosts crowding the room, and two of them are holding their own heads. It makes Alex nauseous, makes him never want to eat again. So any company, especially coming from the man he loves, is good company. “Please,” Alex says after a long silence. “I don’t think I can handle this tonight on my own.”

"just let me take care of you." jenny to alex @gothamrains
It’s the anniversary of the day his daughter went missing, so Alex is honestly a wreck. He hasn’t went to work all week or contacted Jenny or Marin. They would call him several times and text him hundreds of messages but he still wouldn’t answer. Alex was too upset by the hauntings of his past and the what-ifs and what-could-have-beens. Had his daughter not went missing, he probably would still have a wife and his son a mother. He knew thinking that way was unfair since Angie likely still would have cheated on him, but still, he was hurt by the idea of the possibilities of a fixed marriage and an easier, happier life.
Not to say that Jenny and Martin didn’t make him happy - because they did. It’s just, the way they made him happy was less selfish than than the way Angie would. And in a way, he was used to giving love, opposed to receiving it. So when Jenny comes to his door and Fletcher lets her in -- even though Alex told him to tell her to go home if she did - he can’t help but to feel a little bad about the fact that it is hard for him to be loved selflessly.
“But you shouldn’t have to take care of me, Jen,” he replied to her with a sigh, his right hand going through his hair as he doesn’t look her in the eyes. “I don’t deserve that. Not after my daughter disappeared on my watch. This is my fault and I deserve to feel like crap.” He shook a bit, nerves bubbling over. “I’m sorry you had to come over, okay - but I’m fine. I will be fine. You don’t have to take care of me.”
He goes silent after that and assumes that she would leave. Jenny however doesn’t leave. Jenny walked over to him, instead, wrapped her arms around him, and he eventually began to cry.
