Todays update is a couple of earworms that seemed to have rarely left my brain this year.

Rheinzand by way of Scorpio Twins, who seemed to just roll in unheralded and fully realised, bumping out remixes like this.

About as ravey as I can take it these days, mid tempo, gleefully electronic, up for it but sludgey. Peak time dance music, in a fun way.

Its nu disco, its house, its got an epic Euro vibe, reminiscent of millennial San Francisco in its punchy crispness, but wholly its own thing: that little bit Balearic, little bit New Beat by way of Denmark thing, mined so beautifully by Music For Dreams.

A postmodern anomaly and sign of the times that neither of these remixes has a 12” release.

Thats just how it goes now. You can probably get Maroon 5’s entire catalogue on 180gm vinyl, but not this type of dancefloor kryptonite 💥

Rheinzand - Slippery People - four versions of a Talking Heads cover, which are eclipsed by the slinky original Mr Mercury

Rheinzand is a collaborative project between multi-instrumentalist and producer Reinhard Vanbergen, Charlotte Caluwaerts (Tundra) and Mo Disko of the renowned duo ‘The Glimmers.’ Their tracks are a mixture of dance music’s rich history giving nods to old & new, forgotten & popular scenes & genres in order to create their own take on today. 

On Talking Heads cover ‘Slippery People’ the band leans further into their unfolding universe of highly danceable, organic, human funk. Rousing arches of strings swing across a floor of buttery bass and magnetic drums to animate a vintage aura of flair and guts. This carnal glamour is manipulated into new shapes and sizes by Chris Coco and Scorpio Twins respectively before the bonus track ‘Mr. Mercury’ jumps to a chunky laid back disco atmosphere and kitch vocals.

Mit einem hinreisenden Remake von Love Games hat das belgische Künstler*innen- Konglomerat Rheinzand erstmals meine Aufmerksamkeit gewonnen. Love Games stammt im Original von Level 42 aus dem Jahr 1981. Und tatsächlich Level 42 hatten vor dem unsäglichen Lessons in Love insbesondere in den frühen Eighties ihre musikalischen Momente. Love Games ist auch auf dem aktuell erschienenen zweiten Rheinzand Album Atlantis Atlantis erschienen welches eine nähere Befassung sicherlich rechtfertigen dürfte.
