open starter / @nightreststarters location : outside rhee's bar and grill
Tumblr media
The red and blue lights of the police cars outside of Rhee's Bar and Grill cast a dim glow over the parking lot as Dae-eun stood numbly near the front of the restaurant. He'd felt from the moment he set foot in the building that the gathering was a bad idea, but it had promised joy, and that was something that was becoming ever harder to find in this town—evidenced by the events of that very night. Somehow, he hadn't expected it to get this bad. Five deaths—the words could barely process in his mind. Too many known faces, too many bright lights snuffed out all too quickly.
Brooks and Sita. Dae's hands shook as the names came flooding back to him once more; he'd just talked to the other man earlier that night. And Sita... He blinked a few times, hot tears falling onto the ground below as he shuddered. His car still sat on the curb nearby, and his heart panged at the reminder. With a shaky breath, he glanced away, eyes unfocused somewhere in the near distance.

2020 Korean Baseball Organization Preview
The Korean Baseball Organization will start their 2020 season tomorrow and I wanted to take a closer look at the league. ESPN has reached an agreement with the league to broadcast one KBO game a day starting on May 5th. It’s the first sporting events we have seen since March 12th when major sports leagues and college sports announce the postponement and cancellation of games. Here’s a preview of the 2020 KBO season.
Doosan Bears (88-55-1) (2019 Korean Series Champions)
The defending champion Doosan Bears will be without their best pitcher from last season. Former Major Leaguer Josh Linblom went (20-3) with a 2.50 ERA last season. The Brewers signed him to a three-year deal. Right-handed starter Young-ha Lee will be back after posting a (17-4) record with a 3.64 ERA to lead the Bears. Former big leaguers Raul Alcantara and Chris Flexen will try to guide the pitching staff to repeat. Lee Hyung-Bum and Ham Deok-Joo shared closing duties last season. First basemen Jae-Il Oh led the team with 21 homers and 102 RBI’s in 2019. Jose Miguel Fernandez added fifteen homers last year as well.
Hanwha Eagles (58-86) Ninth Place
The Hanwha Eagles have a pair of former Detroit Tigers added to the pitching staff with Chad Bell and Warwick Saupold. That duo each won eleven or more games and led the starting staff. Chung Woo-Ram had 26 saves to lead the bullpen. Former Rangers Jared Hoying was second on the team with eighteen home runs. Lee Seong-Yoel had twenty-one homers to lead the Eagles.
Kia Tigers (62-80) Seventh Place
Aaron Brooks and Drew Gagnon head out to the KBO to try to turn around the Kia Tigers starting rotation. Joe Wieland and Jacob Turner had okay years for the Tigers, but they weren’t retained for the 2020 season. Lefty Yang Hyeon-Jong led the league with a 2.29 ERA. Former Major League outfielder Preston Tucker is back for his season season in Korea. He hit nine homers with 50 RBI’s in 2019.
KT Wiz (71-71-2) Sixth Place
The KT Wiz have Odrisamer Despaigne and William Cuevas to head the starting rotation for this season. Cuevas went (13-10) with a 3.62 ERA in 2019 for the Wiz. Rhee Dae-Eun led the bullpen with seveteen saves last year. Mel Rojas Jr. returns to the outfielder for the Wiz, where he hit twenty-four homers and drove in 104 runs.
LG Twins (79-64-1) Fourth Place
The LG Twins would be a popular team for Minnesota Twins fans because of their name. In college, one of my classmates was from Korea and his favorite team was the LG Twins. Casey Kelley and Tyler Wilson head the rotation. Former Major Leaguer Hyun-Soo Kim is on the Twins, where he hit eleven homers and drove in 82 runs.
Lotte Giants (48-94) Tenth Place
The Lotte Giants won only 48 games last season and were the worst team in the league. Dan Straily and Adrian Sampson come in to bolster the starting rotation, which had a 4.83 ERA as a team last year. Former Mariner Dae-Ho Lee has returned to Korea. He hit sixteen homers and drove in 88 runs in 2019. Former Tiger Dixon Machado will play for the Giants this year.
NC Dinos (73-69-2) Fifth Place
Former Twin Drew Rucinski had a solid year for the Dinos. He went (9-9) with a 3.05 ERA in 2019. Former Oriole Mike Wright will join him in the starting rotation. Outfielder Aaron Altherr has joined the Dinos for his first season of KBO baseball. The once promising prospect has a chance to make a splash this season. Jeong-Hyeon Won led the bullpen with 31 saves.
Nexen Heroes (86-57-1) Third Place (2019 Runners Up)
The Nexen Heroes were led by Byung-Ho Park with 33 homers to lead the KBO. Park is a five-time home run king and former Minnesota Twin. The team did lose former Dodger Jerry Sands, who had 113 RBI’s to lead the league. He signed with the Hanshin Tigers of the NPB. Jake Brigham and Eric Jokisch return after winning thirteen games last season apiece. Choo Sang-Woo and Oh Jae-Young shared the closing duties for the Heroes last year.
Samsung Lions (60-83-1) Eighth Place
David Buchanan joins the Lions alongside Ben Lively. Lively posted a (4-4) record with a 3.95 ERA in nine starts last year. Tyler Saladino will play in Korea after playing with the White Sox and Brewers for parts of five seasons. Darin Ruf led the Lions with twenty-two homers last year, but he was invited to camp with the San Francisco Giants. He was having a great spring until the season was put on hiatus.
SK Wyverns (88-55-1) Second Place
Ricardo Pinto and Nick Kingham help join the Wyverns for their first season in Korea. Jamie Romak had twenty-nine homers with 95 RBI’s in his third season int he KBO. Joeng Choi also added twenty-nine homers and the Wyverns finished second in the league, but lost in the playoffs to the Nexen Heroes. Ha Jae-Hoon led the team with thirty-six saves on the year.
The Korean Baseball Organization has produced current players like Shin-Soo Choo, Ji-Man Choi, and Hyun Jin-Ryu. Players like Byung-Ho Park, Hyun-Soo Kim, Sueng-Hwan Oh, and Dae-Ho Lee have tried Major League Baseball and returned to the KBO. ESPN will stream one game a day and has the schedule out for the first week of the season (see below). It will no doubt be interesting to watch games without fans, high fives, or even spitting. I’m excited to finally have baseball back on the air and look forward to producing more content.
May 5: NC Dinos vs. Samsung Lions (12 AM CST)
May 6: Doosan Bears vs. LG Twins (4:30 AM CST)
May 7: NC Dinos vs. Samsung Lions (4:30 AM CST)
May 8: Kia Tigers Vs. Samsung Lions (4:30 AM CST)
May 9: LG Twins Vs. NC Dinos (3:00 AM CST)

self-para  \  butterfly effect. where: rhee’s bar and grill. when: shortly after this plot drop. mentioned: @brxxksazars & @sita-abbrams trigger warnings: murder, death, mentions of police, and sad dae-eun.
the conclusion is that love is pain, a game that can never be stopped but still, why do i repeatedly scream mayday?
It was just a cup of coffee.
A single act of kindness, one that he hadn't really expected much to come from. He had some extra money, so why not help out? The jokes had caught him off guard, their rapport building quickly. He was sure there was more to the other man than met the eye, but he seemed content to keep the friendship light, so Dae didn't want to pry. The regrets were swinging in full force now, and he swallowed hard. If they'd talked more, if they'd only—
He broke off, shaking his head to try and rid himself of the line of thought. If's wouldn't help anyone right now.
DAE-EUN: just stay safe, don’t want to see you on the news someday. BROOKS: no news for you either DAE-EUN: i promise. BROOKS: holding you to that just so you know BROOKS: sorry you’re stuck with me DAE-EUN: same to you, elsa. sisterly bond or something. so i’ve heard, at least DAE-EUN: stuck like fucking glue
Dae bit his lip, trying to hold back the waterworks that threatened to spill out at a moment's notice. His phone screen was blurry through the unshed tears, but he could still read the words. Just barely, but it was enough.
After the snowstorm and the attack on Jake, he'd felt some sort of bond between the two of them. If nothing else, a pact sealed by stupid jokes and a fierce promise: don't you die on me.
It seemed the promise had never been intended to be kept.
DAE-EUN: there’s something going on here. i just have to figure it out.
Once again, he was useless. Regulated to the sidelines, unable to do anything as the town died in front of him, both in presence and spirit. The longer this went on, the less smiles he saw around him. But not Brooks. Somehow, he kept being his goofy self—Dae still wasn't sure how. Even he didn't have the strength to do that.
Dae hadn't had many friends throughout his life, and even fewer that would've considered him one. So the pleasant surprise of someone not only initiating that step, but continuing to keep it going—it baffled him. Brooks was one of the few people after his move to Nightrest that he truly would have called a friend. And now, he was gone.
He hadn't noticed when everything had happened. Dae had stepped out, looking for a breath of fresh air—Hana's restaurant was thick with people, and they were getting to be too much. Moments after the door shut behind him, he could hear a cheer from inside: the second game was over.
He stayed outside in the night air for a bit, letting his mind run aimlessly until someone screamed from inside. He wished he could say the scene awaiting him was a surprise, but when he realized that he knew the voice, his heart only sank deeper as he raced back inside the restaurant.
From there on out, the rest of the night was a blur. Dae couldn't concentrate on anything, words slipping in and out of focus. He could barely keep himself afloat long enough to answer the police's questioning. He couldn't get the images of the body bags out of his head. Knowing that behind the thick fabric lay people he knew—knew, he catches the tense change—was beyond unsettling, his stomach twisting every time they passed by.
Sita.
God, Sita.
Why did this seem to happen to him every time he managed to be happy? It had happened with Selin, and it happened again with Sita. Perhaps this just wasn't the thing for him.
Dae wanted nothing more than to block the past night out of his head—and maybe someday he could. But that night was not tonight, and his hands shook as he numbly stumbled out the door of the restaurant. He couldn’t even look at his car without pangs of regret washing over him. They’d been there not even three hours earlier.
DAE-EUN: i’m afraid someone just won’t answer. SITA: Don’t say that! SITA: I don’t know how much more death I can take, honestly. DAE-EUN: honestly? me either.
Slowly, he moved towards the car, unlocking the doors and pulling it shut behind him, but he didn’t drive off. Instead, he just sat, staring at the steering wheel. He’d always felt a level of honesty with Sita, one he didn’t feel with many others; she was easy to confide in. A snippet of their previous conversation came tugging back to him, both of them mentioning how they’d never really dealt with death before, uneasy on how to deal with all of this grief.
He supposed he’d have to figure it out on his own from now on.
Memories kept flashing before his eyes: the two of them having a quiet heart-to-heart at a table at C’s, heading out (against his safer instincts) during the fires to scour the scenes, the kiss they’d shared at her house just that night. All of it, gone, just like that—ripped away in minutes.
Not completely, of course—the memories remained, but that was all he’d ever have.
He was getting sick of relying on those alone.
DAE-EUN: if you’re leaving, PLEASE be careful. i have this feeling that something bad is happening.
He took a deep breath, trying to pull himself together enough just to get home—get home, then you can fall apart. Slowly, so slowly, the car drove off into the night.

closed / @jacoboh location : any bar? ig? screw it—go wild, surprise me
Tumblr media
Dae-eun was so caught up in his own thoughts he barely even noticed when the other sat next to him. The gala was in a few days, and he was trying to decide if he should even bother going or not. Usually, he'd say the crowd would be comforting, but considering the crowd at Rhee's the previous weekend and what had happened then, he was starting to second-guess himself. He blinked, finally noticing Jake's presence, and glanced over. "Oh, sorry. I wasn't...paying attention."
