Todos los que vimos Annabelle nos hicimos la misma pregunta: ¿de dónde surgió esa muñeca? ¿Qué acontecimientos propiciaron que el demonio acabara eligiéndola a ella como medio para hacer el mal?

En Annabelle: creation todas esas dudas se resuelven y nosotros ya la hemos visto.

Annabelle: creation es la precuela de Annabelle, película estrenada en 2014, la cual tuvo opiniones muy divididas, puesto que no logró gustar como se esperaba, más después de haberse estrenado Expediente Warren un año antes, película tan exitosa y aplaudida que las expectativas por Annabelle eran demasiado altas, algo que quizá le acabó jugando una mala pasada.

Así, Annabelle: creation no lo tenía demasiado difícil, pues superar a su predecesora era mucho más fácil que tratar de igualarse a la saga de los Warren, cuyas películas (Expediente Warren: the conjuring y Expediente Warren: el caso Einfield) son, simplemente, inimitables.

Y, al final, los pronósticos se han cumplido: Annabelle: creation se ha convertido en la película de terror del año por excelencia. Ha logrado recaudar más de 300 millones de dólares en todo el mundo y los críticos que antaño habían dudado sobre la calidad de su predecesora, en esta ahora lo tienen claro, y es que las valoraciones son, en su gran mayoría, más que positivas.

Annabelle: creation nos lleva hasta 1958 a la residencia de los Mullins, una casa enorme pero bastante oscura marcada por una terrible tragedia que sacudió a sus dueños 12 años antes. Ahora, un grupo de niñas huérfanas son acogidas allí, esperando una familia que las adopte. No obstante, una presencia extraña, sobrenatural, empezará a acosarlas, centrándose en Janice, una pequeña con problemas para andar que teme que ese ente, ese “algo” quiera introducirse en su interior.

Con esta premisa parte la película que por fin resolverá muchas de las cuestiones que los fans del universo Warren se han estado haciendo durante mucho tiempo: ¿quién es Annabelle? ¿Por qué esa muñeca guarda su espíritu? ¿Qué terrible tragedia le ocurrió a esa niña cuya alma ha sido guardada en una macabra muñeca de porcelana?

La película logra recrear un ambiente muy interesante, oscilando en un equilibrio entre la dulzura e inocencia del punto de vista de las niñas y el miedo visceral hacia ese ente extraño que no logramos saber casi hasta el final si es la casa, los dueños de la misma o simplemente un espíritu sin definición corpórea.

Otro aspecto a resaltar positivamente de la película es la forma de llevar la historia (no trama, que mi opinión sobre la misma la daré más adelante), es decir, cómo se va desarrollando, lenta a la par que dinámica, no llegando a aburrir en ningún momento y, al mismo tiempo, no le hace falta mostrarnos un ritmo frenético para captar nuestra atención. Hay escenas lentas y otras rápidas pero se complementan y diluyen de forma muy natural.

Con respecto a la trama, sin embargo, aprecio vacíos en el guion que se quedan sin resolver, momentos que no tienen demasiado sentido y algunos personajes sin carácter, planos. Además, muchos de los sustos son bastante predecibles, así como el sinsentido de algunas actuaciones de los personajes te lleva a darte cuenta de cómo se han visto obligados a forzar el guion para desencadenar acciones sin razón de ser, con el único propósito de justificar el susto de turno.

Para mí, lo mejor es el final. Quienes hayan visto la primera película hallarán aquí un pequeño gran guiño que les hará sorprenderse y, de repente, encajar todos los engranajes, ponerle sentido a todo y soltar exclamaciones de asombro. Sí, ojalá en el resto de la película (principalmente en las partes flojas de guion y trama) hubieran escrito momentos tan buenos como el final. Si así se hubiera hecho, para mí la película hubiera quedado redonda.

No obstante, y como he dicho, esos huecos de guion son los responsables de que finalmente esta película no la meta en mi top 10 de mejores películas del 2017. No obstante, como perla del género de terror se hila a sí misma como una auténtica joya y más vale que vayas acompañado a verla porque sustos y momentos tensos te vas a llevara  ratos… y algún que otro ataque al corazón también.
