🎄A of JAF’s (insta)review: I don’t know about you, but I’ve always loved reading books that match the season/holiday, so I really wanted to read something inspired by the holiday/Christmas season. Naturally, when I came upon The Afterlife of Holly Chase on Goodreads, I had to pick it up. I’ve only ever read one other book by @CynthiaHand (My Lady Jane) but I loved that one so much, I knew I could take my chance with Holly Chase. • The Afterlife of Holly Chase is not so much a retelling of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” but it is heavily inspired by it. And when I say “heavily inspired” I mean, imagine if the events of A Christmas Carol were to happen every year, to different misers, headed by an international organization called “Project Scrooge.” Basically, take the idea of A Christmas Carol and make it a real thing, an actual organization that worked throughout the year to convince selfish, terrible people to be better. • I loved it. I loved almost everything about it. I, personally really enjoy A Christmas Carol (okay, okay, maybe I’m thinking about “A Muppets Christmas Carol”), and I have a soft spot for things like Christmas and people who are selfish reinventing themselves, getting second chances if you will. I knew I would like this book from the synopsis, mostly because I loved the idea that there is this secret organization all around the world that picks one person that could have a giant positive impact, if only they would stop being so terrible. I wanted to love this book. It checked all the right boxes for me: diversity (in author and main character and setting), fantasy/magic, inspired by mythology, gorgeous cover. Unfortunately, I just could not get into it. I don’t know if it was timing or the story or the character, but I found myself looking for other books to read and mentally groaning every time I saw it judging me in its partially read state. Maybe I’ll pick it up again and love it. But till then. I am so in love with this book cover that I refused to carry it around with me for fear that something would happen to it. Finally found a picture for @farrah.shamma’s #2017YearinBookReview #booktag: favorite female protagonist. Lila Bard. I struggled a bit with this one, Hermione Granger was my first female book role model, (Buffy being my TV one), and then there’s the awesome Lyra from the Golden Compass. There was a time that Celaena Sardothien was the baddassest of all assassins (and then SJM made me loath her). Honestly, I read so much YA that I (thankfully) have a plethora of awesome females to rally behind. But, I think I will have to go for Delilah Bard this time.
