RF1: Year 1 - Spring 24
Tumblr media
I've found it! The source that makes me think there is a war going on between Elves and Humans (at least in the RF1 era).
On Spring 24, Raguna speaks to Tabatha in the general store. I think their conversation is quite interesting, so I'll quote it below: Tabatha: "Mr. Raguna, we really talked about a lot of things." Raguna: "Yeah, we did." Tabatha: "Mr. Raguna, talking to you, I really feel my belief that dwarves can be friends with humans can be realized." Raguna: "Tabatha, even though you are human, you always refer to people as “humans”. Isn’t that a little strange?" Tabatha: "Oh, didn’t I tell you? I’m an elf." Raguna: "What?" Tabatha: "It’s not the norm, but I’m working in the human world." Raguna: "I never would’ve guessed!" Tabatha: "That’s because I usually keep my ears covered!" Raguna: "I’m surprised…" Tabatha: "I’m sorry I surprised you. Even now you know I’m an elf, I hope we can still get along." Raguna: "Yes, of course we can." Firstly, I love that Raguna was curious enough to ask Tabatha why she speaks the way she does. He definitely got some bonus points Tabatha for being direct and asking her.
I also think it's sweet that Tabatha forgot that she didn't tell Raguna about her being an elf. I interpret her forgetfulness as stemming from how much she feels like she can be herself around Raguna. Or perhaps, she decided to experiment with Raguna's amnesia. If Raguna has forgotten everything about his past, wouldn't that make him kind of an adult human "blank slate"? Wouldn't he be the best way for her to get her answers about human nature?
Unfortunately, there aren't any events where we can see Tabatha speaking to anyone else but Raguna (except in the beginning with Bianca, but the scene is more about her than Tabatha). So, I'm not sure if she refers to humans as "humans" with anyone else.
But the big question remains: why does Tabatha cover her ears?
I think the main reason is that she wants to pass for a human as much as she can. That way, she can study them more closely and understand them on a deeper level. After all, humans surrounded by humans will always act naturally. She wouldn't have to worry about people treating her differently or her ears attracting unwanted attention.
But then, later that evening, Raguna visits Russell at the library after hours.
Tumblr media
Russell confesses that Cecilia is his adopted daughter and that he found her on a battlefield in a distant land.
While this could mean that Russell used to be part of the Norad Army and participated in battles far to the north of Kardia against the Sechs Empire, I'm not sure if he would still call it a "distant land". If it were against the Sechs Empire, wouldn't he have just said so?
To me, it sounds like he's talking about a third land - Azuma (the East), or the Elven Kingdom. Considering that Cecilia is half-elf and half-human, I'm more inclined to believe that the "distant land" he's referring to is the Elven Kingdom.
What's more, the way Russell talks about war, seems to align pretty well with what Tabatha speaks about when she wishes for a world where all races and monsters could live in peace. Russell shares that "War made [him] hollow inside" and that only "this land, the books of our ancestors... and that child made [him] whole again".
Tabatha, possibly having become accustomed to hearing about or possibly even seeing human warriors, people like Russell who had become hollowed by war, I don't blame her for covering her ears.
On one hand, she could be doing so out of fear. But I believe that she came to Kardia to seek the truth, and as I said before, the more she blends in as a human, the more she can learn about them.
Additionally, Tabatha seems to be averse to fighters. Whenever Raguna heads off to the next cave, she asks things like "Are you a fighter or a farmer"? She always seems very intent on testing Raguna's nature, or asking him questions that would provoke him to explain his motives.
I'm sure I'll touch on this more later as we progress through the story!
** TABATHA ROMANCE SPOILERS BELOW **
This theory also supports Tabatha's true reason for coming to Kardia. If she could prove to the humans and elves that two individuals could love each other despite their race, maybe the war could slowly come to an end. It also helps that Raguna is an apt fighter and would make for an excellent human ambassador for her cause. Or, if I'm wrong about the war, at least she gets to be the bridge between humans, elves, dwarves, and monsters.
It's a little cliché/cheesy, but I like it.

LILA'S RUNE FACTORY TEMPERATURE BLANKET
Phew, it's finally out in the open. Thanks for reading this far if you're still here. If you can't tell, Tabatha's lines about peace have never left my brain, ever since I played the game as a kid!
One of my goals with this project was to sit down and ask myself the big questions about the Rune Factory universe. It's been so much fun creating fan theories about the franchise! Thanks again, everyone, who has come along with me on this journey so far!

[ID: Screenshot of Rune Factory 3 showing dialogue between Marian and three dialogue options. She says to the Player Character, here named Link, “Hey, Link, what do you think love is?” Love is in blue.
The three possible response options read “It’s a sickness.”, “Blind?”, “All you need?”, and “A tennis score?”
End ID]
As ever, a shoutout to the localizers who worked on Rune Factory 3. (For the record, the character asking is the town doctor and also the town mad scientist. Marian will play into the bit no matter what you choose.)

Part 2 of editing RF children portraits to match my favorite bachelorette/bachelor~
This time we have Rune Factory 2 and Cecilia!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know that Aria and Aaron would technically be quarter elves, but Orland gets his elf ears when Jake marries Yue, so I think they deserve elf ears too (even though the ears were a pain as usual 😭). I always find it funny how the game treats Orland as more of an elf under these circumstances, even though they're both quarter elves.
I found Cecilia really entertaining. Her proposal is so odd, and I love it. I always collect round stones in RF4 because they remind me of her. I also love how she's a returning character from an earlier game, because it's fun to see her story expanded on. Her design is amazing too. Knowing my preference for Tabatha in RF1, I seem to have some sort of bias for elf maids (weird that it happened twice ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
(You can request an edit for your favorite bachelorette/bachelor from any game, if you're interested!)
Unedited images and Cecilia for reference under the cut

I don't think it's going to be the next game I play, but the next RF game I'm going to play is RF2, and like... I am going to write something where Russell and probably Nicholas visit Cecilia in Alvarna. It's pretty much inevitable.
Because a) that family are my blorbos, b) even references to something like this were really conspicuously absent in canon, and c) imagine the sheer CHAOS.
People have to go to some unfamiliar rich-person house (volatile situation at the best of times). Cecilia makes some comically elaborate meal and everything that possibly could go wrong does. Max talks for three hours straight because these people are STRANGERS and haven't heard all his stories/aren't familiar enough to just tell him to shut the fuck up. Russell calls Rosalind "Bianca" about 45 times. Rosalind tries to feed Russell some kind of sketchy bathtub lactaid. Nicholas and Cecilia pull a grand prank for old times' sake and break a priceless family heirloom in the process. A whole other heirloom gets broken because someone was too drunk at the function. And who the hell is going to clean all this shit up??
(...Cecilia will, because it's her job and also her people who at least indirectly contributed to the mess. Everyone will try to help but they'll all make things WORSE.)

Hi this is the same person who asked how reserves work, I have another question :) I looked around and I didn't see this mentioned anywhere but I want to know how the timeline works here since the games take place over a lot of time and 5 is several decades after 4 ?
hi again!!! feel free to ask as many questions as you want!! i like answering them.
that is a good one too, i'm surprised i forgot to actually mention it anywhere. So basically, here's how the timeline works:
It doesn't.
(Okay, it DOES, but that's the best way I can think of for how to put this). Effectively, we're... handwaving it? But not handwaving it, exactly -- the timeline still very much exists, and each game exists at its own time across the many decades RF spans, but it's something that doesn't really matter unless you want it to. Think of it like how there's an official drama CD track of all the protagonists across the series interacting: they can, so they do! Everyone can interact across the forum or, if they get the chance, in person, so they do! Why not!
Of course, people can actually go into timeline stuff if they want to write it out and explore and how the people they're interacting with are different from how they know them (ex. RF2-era Cecilia interacting with any RF1 characters, or Doug and / or Margaret from RF4 interacting with RF5 ones, or anything involving the DSCs considering. the DSCs. and also how Porcoline, Bianca, & Electra are around the same age group when you put the timeline together, etc.!)
But for the sake of what's ultimately a casual group: it doesn't matter unless you want it to. ty for the question! <3

You said farewell,  and I thought we’d never see each other again. I’m so glad fate thought otherwise.
Joined @runefactorysecretsanta again this year, and got to work on some Nicholas/Cecilia for @unapologeticbisexual! I hope you like your gift!
I had a lot of fun drawing these two! \(^o^)/ They’re super adorable together. It makes me wanna try and finish RF1 again just to see more of them interacting.

Expectations vs Reality (it was then when Jake realised he was in love)
An addition to the Yue/Jake, Cecilia/Nicholas comic I drew the other day!!! I felt like drawing soft colours and I had some free time today so I did this!! I feel like Yue is probably super strong from all the stuff she has to carry everyday and Jake loves it ofc

Rune Factory Gaiden: Another Day
Released in 2007, Rune Factory Gaiden: Another Day is a short visual novel developed as a collaboration between Marvelous Entertainment and Liveware Inc. It was only released for flip-phones and served as extra stories between Raguna, the heroines of the original Rune Factory, and some of the other villagers. Think of this game as providing the heart events that the original Rune Factory lacked (aside from the marriage events).
This game was released as season trilogies containing three routes each, meaning there are Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter versions.
This service did cost money to play. I could not find the exact price for each route, but I did find a Bokujou Monogatari game, also made as a collaboration between Liveware and Marvelous, which had a monthly subscription of about 300 yen per month, so I would guess that it would be around the same price or more, though I’m guessing a little more since this would be a one-time purchase.
Unfortunately, Liveware has since went under. The company’s website is shut down (you can visit the website but it has nothing of interest - any research on them should be done via Wayback Machine), and I do not believe you can access these games anymore. If anyone has any leads on how to access these games in any capacity, please do not hesitate to let me know!
Special thanks to @ada-tan for finding some of the images~!

idk if there’s an official RF timeline
Raguna describes himself as too young to drink (no idea how he knows that) but is old enough to marry in RF1. Assuming the game made in Japan by Japanese devs is going by Japan standards unless otherwise states, that means he’s at least 18 but not yet 20. I’m going to go with 18 for guesswork.
Cecilia’s age is unspecified, but judging by behavior in RF1 I’m gonna guess she’s around 10. The way the characters are written she could be anywhere from five to twelve tbh but ten is an easy number. At the start of RF2, she’s now old enough to marry. Assuming the bare minimum for Japanese marriage standards that would make her 16. This is assuming she ages at a human rate and has a human age of consent despite being a half-elf. It takes roughly one in-game year to get married, have a kid, and establish the school, but we won’t count that because you can play through ten years in RF1 and Raguna will still be too young to drink. Then there’s a 7 year time skip.
So by the end of RF2, Raguna is probably around 32-34. As young as 30. Possibly 40, if Ceciel was on the younger side in RF1 and more like 18 or 20 in RF2.
In RF4, Barrett has had an additional child who is not yet a toddler. Assuming this child is conceived immediately after the events of RF2, that’s at least one more year. (I can’t remember if he gives any other time references.)
So Raguna, in RF4, is likely in his late 30s or early 40s. RF5 isn’t out yet, but I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that, while we know elves age much slower, dwarves might age at a human rate, and Doug looks like 5 years older minimum in his new character art. Meaning Raguna is probably in his early to mid 40s during the events of RF5. Still running his rural farm in Trampoli, still oblivious to the fact that he’s a distant relative of the king because his brother who he didn’t realize was his brother chose not to tell him so he could enjoy his life in Kardia. Did word ever reach him of the Sech Empire’s second attempt to invade? Did he consider trying to stop them, because his kids are practically the age he was when he thwarted their last invasion so it’s safe to leave them alone while he runs off to save the day? Or did he sit it out because he now has back pain and male-pattern baldness?
