[Review] Rez Infinite (PS4)

Style over substance.

Next on my rail-shooters list is this remaster of Sega's 2001 Dreamcast/PS2 cult classic. The updated rerelease brings the game into HD but also adds VR support (not applicable to me) and a substantial new level.

Part of the original development team on Rez had previously created Panzer Dragoon, and there's a similar lock-on mechanic in play here (the shifting camera angle is also familiar). Rez is stripped-back for a shooter though; the lock-on is your only input aside from a limited smart bomb, the health system is simple... you can't even move! It's more about the sensory experience than deep gameplay.

Everything about Rez's story and setting is abstract. Supposedly you're in cyberspace infiltrating an advanced AI or something, but it's not really important. The point is flying through a dazzling dreamscape surrounded by glowing, low-poly wireframes while trance music plays. It's like an interactive planetarium show. Part of the pitch is that your actions affect the audiovisual experience; for example, blowing up an enemy results in a beat that contributes to the soundscape. I found this didn't really work for me in creating a pleasing, cohesive aesthetic, though.

Worse, the game can become so visually busy that it affects the gameplay experience: I would sometimes be caught off guard by an attack that was lost in the noise. The health system corresponds to the "evolution" of your character from a sphere to a humanoid wireframe to a shiny person, but it's slow to build up between forms and one hit instantly reverts you. There is a mode that eliminates game overs though, which is nice.

With only five levels, the game is over quickly, but it's meant to be replayed for better scores or just to re-experience the light show. The extras menu has a boss rush and a couple of bonus levels, but I couldn't get a good enough score in the first to unlock the second... bummer. However, a headline feature of this release is Area X, a new level of similar size to the others which adds movement mechanics and a new visual style reminiscent of Tetris Effect (the remaster devs' next game) with myriad dancing particles, and new music that ends up landing on a nice techno-pop track.

Area X is an odd inclusion, as its new look feels very next-gen and shows the age of the original included game, technologically speaking. Adding in freedom of movement too felt like it really opened things up, and I enjoyed this a lot. The new doesn't sit comfortably with the old, making the package feel disjointed; maybe they could have let Monstars and Resonair just make a whole new full-length game in this style? Why limit this to just one level? To bring it back to the series that spawned Rez, maybe an expanded Area X should have been the main point of this release and the remaster a bonus, the way Panzer Dragoon Orta had OG PD as an extra.

So much for what might have been. As for what we have, it's a decent update of a landmark experimental game for its time, toying with rhythm-action dynamics and a nice abstract cyberspace feel. Rez does feel dated to me though since we now have games like Thumper and Sayonara Wild Hearts, and the gameplay isn't as crunchy as my favourite rail shooters. The aim was to create a sense of synaesthesia but it didn't really get there for me. Supposedly Area X takes some inspiration from Rez's sequel/successor Child of Eden, so I'll play that next and see how they upped their game.

So my entire weekend has been sucked away playing in the new area in Warframe, and despite my average FPS being a solid 10 most of the time, I managed to spot this bad boy painted on the walls. Needless to say, I just found a new tattoo I want.

The text roughly translates to "No God Above Knowledge" as far as I can deduce, but that last little vowel accent is tripping me up. I gotta get a closer look at the text next time I spot it.

LMAO getting more caught up and I've noticed something interesting about Sun. A trend really

So I just finished the episode "Magic training begins! In VRchat" and his new teacher said they'd teach Sun how to pull magic from everywhere around him.

So he can eventually do magic without a mana pool.

This reminds me, that's exactly what he was taught to do with Star power. He pulls star power in from around him and he then proceeds to manipulate it etc etc.

Something else unique about him is he's Solar powered. One of the only ones implied to have Solar energy. It's why he's able to run on nothing. Why he can avoid charging for literal days on end.

I just want to point out Sun is setting himself up to basically have infinite power. He'll never run out of juice. He can now draw from infinite resources. Draw energy from the literal air around him.

Taurus met Sun and the first thing he noticed is Sun is wreathed in power. He pointed out he was radiating it. The sense I got he didn't even dislike it. What he did dislike was Sun teaching someone else how to use it who proceeded to misuse use it.

As we know, when the Creator wanted to kidnap Lunar it was to use him as a star power battery because unlike Sun who just draws on Star power (rarely tho because he can explode if he holds it too much) Lunar produces it and the Creator wanted that.

Just an interesting observation that Sun can tap into so many volatile power sources. They're all meant to corrupt too, but Sun managed to avoid that. He's this uncorruptible source of strength for the family etc.

I understand that for laes Rez/Res is probably going to move in and do things to Lunar and Earth soon, and they can corrupt things with their power.

Anyways, remember Dark Sun? Just Sun. He's also using power sources but doesn't show signs of being corrupted by it. He's actually going cross-dimensionsal and made the impossible possible (Omg Sun-core!) by absorbing Star Power in other dimensions. I think he's using the star power to feed his pet dragon but anyways.

Both he and Sun display a learned ability to sense star power and nsp. Sun knew when Nexus showed up in their house and D! Sun told Nexus when to purge his overabundance of nsp. But he also walked away because he mentioned he's basically drowning from the amount of nsp Nexus purged.

Sun also noticed the pressure Taurus exudes similarly to Lunar. So far they're the only two Taurus used his aura/pressure anime intimidation thing on.

Ongoing Series - Thai

My Dear Gangster Oppa (Thurs iQIYI) 1 of 8 - Classic unlucky in love failed crush on straight bestie = both v queer and v emo yaoi. I gotta say I like these actors way better in this than their previous series, and maybe that’s because Tew is more like Tul and I just like Meen better when he’s… erm… mean. All of which is to say, this is off to a wonderful start and I am about to lose my very sleep deprived little mind... ready for a ABL ecstasy rant?

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH I CAN'T EVEN.

"I play support because that way everyone is happy to see me show up," might be the single best moment of characterization BL has EVER seen.

Look here, in the grand cornucopia of BL universes this is my metaverse. It's pulp... but relatively high production. It has an established pair that I know I like... but who were given crap before. It's a tidy little script, it's not gonna run too long, and it's ALL the archetypes and tropes I love but rarely see. It's Japan's style otaku plus Korea's style gangster, Thailand's style friendship group, and it arrived out of NOWHERE. It's Korea's IP & money, Thailand's talent, and China's streaming service.

Do we know what the hell is going on?

No we do not.

Do we care when it's this much fun?

No we do not.

This show I why I got into BL.

Dangerous Romance (Fri YT) ep 11 of 12 - I managed to watch most of it on low rez before YT "discovered" I was in Asia and therefore could not be allowed to watch Asian shows. (AKA my VPN failed me.) But it seemed like a good ep.

My Universe (Sun iQIYI) Lucky Love ep 10 of 24 - I enjoyed this 2 part installment, it’s a bit of a sad sack recovery SAGA, but the acting is genuine, the couple believable, and the story felt particularly queer to me. 7/10 but close to an 8. It was really quite charming.

However: Next week looks not good on many levels - it's horror and I spotted guitar. Which is even more horrific. 

Absolute Zero (Thai Weds iQIYI) ep 5 of 12 - do temporal paradoxes exist in Thailand? That is the question. I gotta say Tor (Ongsa) is carrying this show and is doing a really great job, it's just the story itself doesn't resonate with me. Ugh it's so sad.

Is it, indeed, better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all?

We only on ep 5 and had a full story arc already, there is A LOT more to go.

Venus in the Sky (Tues iQIYI) 9 of 10 eps - the fact that in losing Sky Venus also lost his surrogate family explains his resulting bitterness a little bit more. I wish we had gotten this back story much earlier. Still stupid pulp made me cry, which of course means it's back in my good books. This story is slow as fuck, but I'm going on a rollercoaster with it.

Kiseki: Dear to Me (Taiwan Tues Viki & iQIYI) ep 11 of 13(?) - I love them, okay? All of them. This is a great sappy classic Taiwanese BL and it is my baby and you can’t take it away from me. MINE. 

You Are Mine (Taiwan Fri Viki) eps 8 of 10 - oh noes it got sad, I thought they would at least would have had drunken sex before the drama. Sigh. Still the kissing was good, as it should be from Taiwan.

If It’s With You AKA Even If I Fall In Love With You AKA Kimi to nara Koi wo Shite Mite mo’ (Japan Gaga) ep 4 of 5 - Amane is so brave. About being gay. Being out. Confessing. Its admirable if scary. Otherwise this ep was pretty slow. 

Bump Up Business (Korea Gaga) 3-4 of 8 - how do I feel about this show? Conflicted. Are OnlyOneOf doing a great job? Yes, actually. Am I enjoying it? No, not really. Is this anyone's fault? I don't think so.

The little linguistic negotiation was cute tho. And we seem to have gotten idols kissing in a BL both in the same group, so that glass ceiling dildo has finally been broken.

NineMill are unexpectedly good, also KB plays a great evil ex. Of the 3, I think only Nine is good enough to go into acting permanently (but he's not tall enough). Still, all hail OnlyOneOf... kings of the "gay concept." You boys make me v nervous but as couple-branding goes, you just out branded Thailand. Mad props baibies. Legit never thought I'd see the day.

Trust Korea to be in it to win it.

What Did You Eat Yesterday Season 2 AKA Kinou Nani Tabeta? Season 2 (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 1 of 10 - I find this series more fun to binge, so I'm waiting until it completes its run.

I Cannot Reach You AKA I Can't Reach You AKA Kimi ni wa Todokanai (Japan Tues Netflix-Japan & ????) - in classic JBL fashion, I Cannot Reach You could not be reached. 

Can I Buy Your Love From A Vending Machine? AKA Sono Koi, Jihanki de Kaemasu ka? (Japan cinema release in-country only) - This one is a movie from Japan so in customary fashion who tf knows when (or if) it will get international distribution. Salaryman Ayumu Koiwai just can't tear his eyes away from the strong, muscular man as he checks on the stocks of the vending machine in his office.

One Room Angel (Japan Gaga) - adaptation of Harada’s manga of the same name (which I did not like) about a convenience store clerk who's stabbed, nearly dies, and returns home to find an angel waiting for him. With only 5 eps and a good chance this won’t end happy, I'm gonna wait and let you tell me how it goes.

10/31 SHADOW (Thai Gaga) 1 of 14 - this is a horror BL featuring ghosts and other paranormal elements in a high school setting. I'm not wild about Thai horror (or horror at all). It features Singto (who did paranormal BL He's Coming to Me) opposite Fluke N (who's done a couple horror's before). Also Fiat. Dan suffers from sleep paralysis, and in his dreams he sees a shadow that suffocates him. It gets worse when he transfers schools.
