Please help me with my research for university!

I'm a university student in my final year and I am preparing my thesis that focuses on user engagement in the Star Wars fanfiction communities. My main focus is fanfiction relating to the Sequel Trilogy, so if you read or write content relating to this universe you could help me a lot! It’s been like two and a half months since I updated Look at Me, and I know explanations aren’t required when it comes to fic writing and posting, but sometimes it just makes me feel better to give one ok lol. First of all, my schedule changed quite a bit since September, so I think that threw me off. But second, now that I have gotten back to some writing, I ended up doing 2 chapters in a row for the multi chapter in my other fandom. I got going and then I was kinda in a groove with that plot and wanted to take advantage of it. I’m still in that groove tbh. In fact, I’m toying with the idea of just finishing that fic first (it only has a couple chapters left now) before I get back to reylo. Idk, I’m not sure yet but I guess I’ll just have to see how it goes.

Anyway, for anyone who’s been following and enjoying the fic I appreciate the ongoing patience not that I think this is all you’re thinking about, I know you all have lives too 😆 and I hope I won’t keep you waiting too much longer. I do at least have the remainder of the fic outlined already, so when I do get back to it I likely won’t have much to figure out. I still love reylo in this au so much and can’t wait to actually complete this story. On that note, I’ll just leave this here since they’re so pretty-

As a veteran Reylo, I personally don't see anything wrong even after like why? 4-5 years? All I see is enemies to lovers. (and like poorly written characters but like everyone knows that already)

“You come here often,” Rey grinned, leaning over the bench press Ben was using.

He took a deep breath as he set the bar back into place and tilted his head back to look at Rey.

“No, but my girlfriend does and I lost a bet.”

“Wooow, you really love me, don’t you.”

Ben sat up and Rey came around to stand in front of him, arms crossed.

The weight room was empty aside from them, it was the weird part of the morning where the early crowd had left and the later morning crowd had yet to arrive. The best part of the day according to Rey because almost all the equipment hadn’t been used yet. There’s just something nice about not having to triple check the equipment before use, she’d said when Ben had whined about going in so early. He had to agree there, the bench press hadn’t been sweaty or on some odd weight when he’d gone to use it.

“Look,” he placed his hands on her hips as she glared down at him playfully, “when I said loser gets to pick the next date, I didn’t expect you to wipe the floor with me.” Rey opened her mouth. “Yes, yes, I should’ve listened to Poe and Finn but you know I think they’d lose at hide and seek. I didn’t think just because you beat them you’d beat me.”

“Are you saying you have no faith in my skills as a driver?”

“I’m saying I’ve seen you try to drive a warthog, and a mongoose, and a ghost- really everything you drive usually ends up on its side, blown up, or over a cliff.”

“Okay, I’m just going to leave you here.”

Rey turned towards one of the doors, but not the door back to the changeroom where she’d just come from.

“No, come on! I’m kidding,” he called after her.

“The boxing ring is this way,” she said, turning towards him and pointing over her shoulder. “I’m going to warm up, I suggest you do the same. Of course, it’s not going to stop me from wiping the floor with you… again.”

I am now doing research to make side plot more realistic despite this whole thing taking place in fantasy world where I could make it all up HELP I was just trying to write some smut 》》》 《《《 it may be demisexuality showing I need it to make sense I need 50 pages of tease and denial and another 50 for foreplay but why the fck would I need this sideplot where did that one come from

I want to write a very horrible self indulgent cheesy problematic fic about a character I have not read everything about and very likely deeply misunderstand and put them in situation where they are very unlikely to ever be in canon and in my evil brain I also considered writing it in 2nd voice reader x character to really appeal (or further upset) other little sickos

Finnrey! I ship the Bffs while I Reylo. TROS

When starting this post I was very curious as to what happened between FinnRey between The Last Jedi and TROS. I had to do some research into the books that were released during that gap.

I didn't like TROS, but one aspect I did like was seeing FinnRey again and the scenes they did receive warmed my heart. Now.....

Dear John Boyega - I'm not sure what you were promised, I wasn't there for pre-production conversations and I know you were a huge fan of Star Wars - however, this was never your story. This was the Skywalker + Rey story. Reylo was planned from the outset so it wasn't that. Yes, you were the first main black cast member of a SW film, it doesn't mean you were the most important character though.

Yes, Adam Driver is tall, dark, handsome and white... his character is also the son of Han and Leia, a Prince, he's the grandson of Anakin and Padme, the villain AND Luke's nephew and former padawan. Adam Driver is also a helluva actor. From a purely story wise perspective..... he's pretty damn important. No, you didn't sidelined due to him.

I also agree with Jason Fry, he got a fully developed story in The Last Jedi. TROS let everybody down. Ben solo was screwed, Rey was partially developed then screwed, Rose (thankfully) was in two minutes, Leia (unfortunately) was limited, Poe was meh, Hux was replaced then pointlessly murdered, R2D2 was limited..... so calm down.

In the year between TLJ and TROS, The novel Resistance Reborn gives us the biggest clues into their relationship during this time, despite Rey being a side character. It's very clear from Poe and Rose that they find Rey difficult to get to know. Rose comments that she find Rey someone who seems like she's both in the present and just beyond it. Poe attempts to bond with Rey through banter about flying skills, ships or being a Jedi which Rey find mostly annoying. Rey is friendly and she's a dedicated student of the Force, but it's clear she only really has a bond with Chewie, BB8, her master Leia and of course Finn. There's a conversation between Poe and Finn aboard the Falcon regarding his relationship with Rey.

Poe: "So the two of you aren't..."

Finn: "No, nothing like that. Just friends."

Rey and Kylo are both strong in the Force, they are the light and dark sides of the same coin, but FinnRey is made of the same noble cloth. While I Reylo, I'm glad Rey was able to receive such pure friendship and love from Finn. Finn is someone she can connect to especially as she grows more distant from everyone else as a mere byproduct of fate. Finn is so excited that Rey exists, the moment he meets her he has someone he loves to fight for. Over a short time that love grows bigger than his fear of what he fled.

TROS Scenes

In the movie, it's made clear that mainly Rey is training while Finn goes out on missions with Poe or Rose. While this frustrates Poe, Finn calmy agrees that they would use her. I disagree with this. While practically speaking, Finn and Rey's strengths and weaknesses complement each other, the best thing she could be doing is training.

When it's revealed that Palpatine has return (eyeroll) Rey decides to head to the desert of Pasaana to find the Sith Way finder to Exegol. While preparing to depart Rey finds that Finn, Poe, Chewie and BB8 are heading out with her. Good. FinnRey are a shockingly good team, a fact they discover within just a few minutes of meeting each other. Plus, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley are brimming with BFF energy that audience enjoys watching.

It's also great to see Finn evolve into a character more centered into himself so much so that he's the more moderating character that bind the trio of Poe, Rey, and himself together. Finn is the only character that has strong connections to everyone on screen.

There definitely seems to be an attempt to not separate Finn from Rey or vice verse but make sure his arc is balanced while still being her confidante. They don't necessarily have many moment in Pasaana where you get a sense of their mutuality. Daisy Ridley commented on the new dynamic.

"The thing for me that was always really exciting is I never felt like there was a specified sort of love that we were portraying. So the relationship between Finn, Rey and Poe in this one, I felt amazing. It's friendship, it's family, and it's just a lovely sort of thing," she shared. "I also think that's nice in a film way to not necessarily have an overt 'This is friendship. This is love.' It's just all a beautiful collection of people."

Now comes the moment when they thought they were going to perish in the sinking sands of Pasaana. Finn starts to confess something to Rey, but he only gets as far as “Rey, I never told you—” before being swallowed up by quicksand. Everyone debated what was he going to tell her. One might reasonably assume—as a significant portion of The Rise of Skywalker’s audience did—that Finn was going to tell Rey he loves her. Abrams declared that what Finn wanted to tell Rey is that he was Force-sensitive. Even after they obviously survive he still won't confide in her just yet cause Poe is this there I guess. Are you for real? Why is this played like some kind of mysterious I've waiting to tell you kind of thing? It's been obvious for two movies - now three movie - can we get this show on the road? Besides, Rey already knows he's force-sensitve.

I think more importantly - this was a missed opportunity to show Rey be there for Finn. Finn could've been developed to show how he feels about anything and Rey could've been there to emotionally support him. When they are safe underground she does ask what he was going to tell her, he's uncomfortable telling her with Poe there - still, this moment needed to have happened.

Now there are some great moments of Finn just checking on Rey or being aware of her safety. When she walks out into desert it's because both she knows Kylo Ren is coming, when Finn realizes this he goes to join her.

There real moment of glory is after she thinks she kills Chewie in a moment of tug-o-war with Kylo Ren. Lightning came out her fingers, shocking her and everyone else. Finn is wonderful in this scene. Showing compassion for where she was at emotionally. Not only did he seek her out alone to reassure her that what had happened wasn't her fault, but he also rallied more support with Poe. It also provided a moment for her to express feelings and emotions she had been hiding inside herself. Over the past year she had been having dark visions and voices inside her head. Finn isn't afraid of her, but he is afraid for her.

Rey : I lost control.

Finn : It wasn't your fault.

Rey : It was.

Finn : No. It was Ren. He made you do it.

Rey : Chewie's gone. That power came from me. Finn, there are things you don't know.

Finn : Then tell me.[pause] 

Rey : I, uh, had a vision. Of the Sith throne. And who was on it.

Finn : Ren?

Rey : [shaking voice]  And me.

The fact that he is also a Force User and could sense what was happening with her just cemented the bond that they already have. He’s going to be able to understand things about her that others cannot. Finn was the person Rey could talk to and trust he would listen and care. He didn’t hold things against her, he had her back 100%. He cried for her. He verbally affirmed her. They spoke in a raw and honest way with each other that was beautiful. Finn absolutely has faith in Rey.

On Kijimi, there are just nice moments of togetherness. You can tell Finn is staying close to Rey as a source of support and just keeping an eye out for her. When Ren's destroyer arrives and Rey begins to go outside, Finn's right there watching her back.

After Rey's interaction with Kylo when Kylo reveals to her not only that they form a dyad in the force, but that she's a Palpatine this is revealed in the novel. In this moment she's tempted once more to join Kylo Ren in the gray or in the dark. Then Finn appears. In the novel, "Suddenly she felt a weight at her back and along with it.....Finn, a bright light piercing the dark......"Come on!" yelled Finn. She sprinted for the edge then launched herself toward the Falcon. Finn grabbed her arm before she could sail by and swung her onto the ramp. They sprinted into the Falcon's belly. The ramp rose closing them in."

Rey tells Finn “People keep telling me they know me. I’m afraid no one does.” Her internal battle became overshadowed by this massive legacy thrust upon her. She's exhausted and isn't pure Jedi. Part of Rey's arc is she's got darkness in her and she knows it. Once again Finn is just present for her in whatever that means while she tinkers with repairs.

Something that isn't given any time or attention is that Finn is pure white light to Rey. Finn is Rey's greatest pull to the light. He also tells Poe that he and Leia can understand Rey’s struggle in a way Poe cannot. This isn't just Finn running after Rey. He's aware of his friends struggles and trying to stop her from leaning towards the dark side.

Poe Dameron : [after Rey heads to the Death Star wreckage alone]  What the hell was she thinking?

Finn : Poe, we gotta go after her.

Poe Dameron : We'll get the Falcon fixed, and get out there as fast as we can

Finn : No, we're gonna lose her.

Poe Dameron : Look, she left us! What do you wanna do? Swim?Finn : She's not herself. You have no idea what she's fighting.

Poe Dameron : And you do?

Finn : Yeah, I do. And so does Leia.

Poe Dameron : Well, I'm not Leia

.Finn : That's for damn sure.

When she's fighting Kylo Ren Rey is out of control. She's dominated by rage and frustration. In the novel, "A presence cut through her awareness - shining and bright and a voice screaming, "Rey!" Finn was running toward her, leaving Jannah behind to watch their skimmer. Rey's instinct to protect Finn was overwhelming. With no thought at all she called on the Force and thrust out with her hand. He flew backward toward Jannah toward the edge of bridge wreck. A wave crashed down on the streach of bridge between them.

Finn : The Force. The Force brought me here. It brought me to Rey. And Poe.

I really love that Finn became a General alongside Poe and I think one of their best scenes together is when they gave a speech to the members of the Resistance.

Now it is implied that this is both Rey's workstation AND Rey/Finn's bedroom. I cannot confirm and this might just be me, but there we go.

Finn: Hey, don't touch that. That's my friend's.

Droid. Sorry, she is gone?

Finn: Yeah, she's gone. I don't know where.

Droid: I miss her.

Finn: I miss her, too.

I loved the moment when he sensed her death. The confirmation of his Force-sensitive instincts was so satisfying. And then his joy when he saw her alive was completely consistent with everything Finn has done with Rey since the moment they first met.

John Boyega, Finn's actor, was once asked whom he would like to see Finn end up with between Rey and Rose and he replied, "[Finn] had this kind of banterous relationship with Han, then he has this loving relationship with Rey. Now with Rose, it feels like he has this great relationship. Personally? Rey. Yeah, Rey."

Lily saying this is so stupid because she does this constantly. As long as she already has a dislike for someone, she will believe anything an anon says about them without ever bothering to look shit up.

She also didn't add anything to this post because she didn't actually know the person the anon was talking about, so I have no idea why she bothered to yell at the op at all. For all she knows, they could be telling the truth (I also don't know who their talking about). It's just so weird to see someone get on someone else's case for something you've seen them engage in multiple times, not all that long ago.

the funny part about this is that those "probably bullshit accusations"... are all true. if you read stitch's work, then you know already that they compare liking reylo with racism and racial motivated harassment. if you as a reylo ever had to be whitewashed or treated as a racist person for no other reason than being a reylo shipper, somewhere down the line stitch was more than likely involved. i can confindently say that anything and everything LO ever said about reylos was more than likely influenced, if not completely lifted, by stitch and her works. if you follow their social media, then you already know how they react badly when they see other POC disagreeing with their takes about media. LO does know stitch, they're... friendly terms i want to say, because they don't give the impression of being actually close to each other. LO shares a lot of their work and i think even tried to defend them a couple of times on twitter, while stitch appeared in a couple of streams to say hello. so even though i do understand why LO wants to defend stitch, in this case... she's arguing for nothing. if she knows that those allegations aren't true, then she could have just said to OP to do their research or show them how they're wrong. but she can't do that, because all those allegations are true. in fact, they're the foundation of stitch's work. so instead she immediately went to the offense and attack because she doesn't care.

i do hope i don't have to clarify that you can be critical about fandom, racism and ships without going to the extreme of belittling other POC/their experiences, just because they happened to ship another set of characters than the ones you'd prefer they ship. that won't ever end racism anywhere.

i don't remember the exact wording, but i remember one time someone asked LO where she did she her research about fandom racism and she said the only source she has was stitch. it's fine to listen to the perspective of POC, of course, it should be encouraged, but to only limit yourself to the opinion of one is a disservice to all other POCs who don't get attention when they also talk about their experiences with racism.

You can keep posting that image about seeding but the problem is not that you matched them wrong, it’s the way that your seeding was calculated. Basing seeding off of submissions is a faulty way to calculate because it’s a much smaller sample population than even the people who will participate in the poll. A better option would have been to take the ships and their popularity from ao3, and when/if you accept submissions that aren’t there then to estimate only those based on number of submissions.

Ben Solo/Kylo Ren Headcanons AU Thing

I reject Disney's canon and substitute my own

It's the middle of the night WTF am I doing with my life

He's actually around 15 at the time of TFA but his body has been artificially aged up with hormones and cybernetic implants (Presumably, biomedical technology would have improved significantly since the empire fell and it's not like Palpatine has ever had a problem with child soldiers)

In a lot of ways, he's a slightly smarter version of Anakin and has made a lot of modifications on his lightsaber, helmet, and cybernetic implants

The voice modifier on his helmet has customized settings that let him imitate voices.

He and the Knights of Ren would swap outfits and lightsabers just to mess with people

Sleeps with a Darth Vader teddy bear

Has a gaming channel

Anytime Leia would have problems with her colleagues in the New Republic, little Ben would look them up on the holonet and cyberbully them

He still cyberbullies a lot of high-ranking officials of the First Order

Doesn't get to decide whether he reads someone's mind, he just perceives their thoughts whether he wants to or not. There are a lot of things he knows that he wishes he didn't.

At one point, he made a working prototype of a fighting droid that could use the force. However, the head of research and development at the First Order called him a punk bitch, so he decided not to tell them about it

Kylo Ren and Hux often trade insults and rude hand gestures when passing by each other and in meetings.

I think Jenny Nicholson is my favorite YouTuber not only because I find her funny and smart and insightful and well researched, but because I got to watch her in real time breakup with her number one fandom. The internet is full of fandoms comprised of people who dislike or even outright hate the source material (in part or whole) but still engage in the fandom for nostalgia, or for "what could have been"s, or just to continue playing dolls in the universe. But not Jenny Nicholson. Rise of Skywalker came out, she fucking hated it, and she never did Star Wars content ever again. She never did movie reviews ever again on her main. She openly posted on socials that she was done with the franchise, she was out, and four and a half years later she's stuck with it (until her Star Wars hotel video which she says she only went to because of the concept itself).

And if you're a newer fan of hers you might not know this but she did a lot of more casual off the cuff Star Wars content beforehand. Videos about Kylo Ren's inevitable redemption arc (lol), she read a Reylo fanfic-turned-novel, about the Knights of Ren (lol x2), read alternate movie scripts, she rated every single porg she bought. She got into twitter beef with shippers! And then Rise of Skywalker was fucking garbage and she said "alright, well that was fun" and hit da bricks. Queen!

What fandoms do you write for?

I bounce around fandoms a lot AND write for exchanges pretty frequently, so i'm not as much of a steady fandom person. You can go to my user page and expand fandoms to see just how true that is. Old standbys are probably Star Wars and Naruto, as insane as that sounds.

What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Me and You and a Dog Named Boo - 1,411 kudos. Venom movies Venom/Eddie/Reader cross-country roadtrip with some mild plot and lots of porn. I wrote this with my partner and a close friend and it may have taken us 5 years to finish but we had an immense amount of fun along the way.

General Organa's List of Things You May No Longer Do - 750 kudos. Short humor fill for a SW kinkmeme prompt from back in 2016. Writing-wise I don't think it's anything special but it was my first fic posted to AO3.

Artemisia in Snow - 402 kudos. Reylo hypothermia fic, simple as. Did a lot of research on hypothermia for this one. I think it ranks so highly in kudos simply because it's one of my few T-rated fics.

Vestal - 394 kudos. Short short short Kylo Ren character study. I wrote this one night and posted it immediately, but I'm still very fond of it. Lots of gender going on. I feel proud that it was so well-received and kicked off a long-term fandom friendship of mine.

Take a Slice - 310 kudos. Kirikacchako threesome fic, what more is there to say? Also written with two close friends in a round-robin format during an in-person visit. Very fun, if not all that complex.

These fics are all fun and great but ultimately overall they don't represent my best writing or my personal favorite fics that I've written.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Deep sigh I wish I was better about this. I almost always respond to exceptionally long comments because they're SO important to me, but otherwise it can be hard. I have a huge backlog that I'll likely never get to if for no other reason than some of them are SO OLD.

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Maybe Hard Cover. Obi-Wan/Qui-Gonn Bad Guys Made Them Do It noncon where they walk away with their relationship is kind of in tatters and, worse, we know that the river of canon will flow on. I find the idea of them not getting to resolve what happened before Qui-Gonn's death way more devastating than the death alone.

Caw, Caw, Koodle-Yah is also pretty angsty.

What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I can't lie I'm a sucker for happy endings, so I think a lot of the fics I write have them? (Outside of all the noncon that makes up about 1/3 of my output.) Maybe the happiest to me is Come Calling in that it involves a nice getting together with the promise of a future. The ending is very rosy, but it came from the heart (and the hole).

Do you get hate on fics?

Once or twice. I had someone get MASSIVELY upset at me for choosing not to spoil a surprise in one of my fics in the tags. We had a short interaction in the comments that didn't satisfy them so they sent me an EMAIL complaining about it further and demanding that I "admit" I did it out of spite, which I definitely didn't.

Do you write smut?

HAHAHAHAHA. Yes. Prodigiously.

Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I do not. I don't want to knock anyone who does but they've always seemed vaguely silly to me? I prefer canon-swap AUs to straight-up crossovers.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

I think once or twice I've had someone request to translate a fic into Russian, but I'm not sure if they ever went through with it.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I don't speak another language, so I probably wouldn't go there unless I was close enough to someone who did that they could help. I sometimes find it a bit cheesy when people do this but ultimately it won't stop me from reading a fic.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes, many! I love co-writing. Having someone to cheerlead you through the tough sections and share the load of writing is really nice. I enjoy the creative process of bouncing ideas off of each other and most of the time this outweighs the difficulty of making compromises.

What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Most of my favorite ships are ones that I don't write for, or even read for. Often they're ones where the text has everything I want. That said, it's probably Ashitaka/San from Princess Mononoke or Cam/Pal.

What’s a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Probably the unpublished Arcane fic that's about Cait/Vi failing as a relationship and slowly breaking up disastrously because of their experiential differences. The idea of them just crumbling apart fascinates me but I haven't been able to find much momentum to really write the damn thing.

What are your writing strengths?

I think dialogue! I really like writing it, the process of tweaking it, AND it's my favorite part of a fic to read.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Eurgh....plot. Plot is so hard for me. I'm not a gardener or a pantser, but an architect with aphantasia. I'll have an idea but how to get there just makes me draw a blank. It takes a lot of effort to structure themes, ideas, and theses into actual stories, which is a bit embarrassing to admit. I still love to write, though.

First fandom you wrote for?

Naruto! I was about 12 I think and wrote an unfinished Sakura/Gaara fic based loosely on an existing fic that I really loved.

Favorite fic you’ve written?

Probably either Fires That Fence the World In or Steal the Blush.

Fires is my first Locked Tomb fic and a true labor of love. I put a lot of work, some actual research, and a great deal of elbow grease into that fic and feel a great, tender affection for it in my heart.

Steal the Blush was a gift for my partner where I had free reign to play with the Hannibal dolls in an omegaverse setting however I wanted, and I did exactly that. Omegaverse isn't a trope I'd ever write for myself (and squicks me out in many cases), but it was a fun challenge to make it work for myself. I also think I got the character voices JUST right.
