Kaishin Reveal and What It Means For You

Okay I need everyone to keep their shit together because I think this is being blown out of proportion. What follows is a quick rant about what the hell is going in the DCMK fandom and what is going on in fandom in general cause I don’t know why I’m seeing so many people lose their shit over something that was most likely going to happen followed by a quick lesson by a ‘fandom elder’ on how to ignore canon and make a ship your own. 

Spoilers ahead and whatnot. 

April 11th the DCMK 27 movie came out and information was revealed about how Kaito Kuroba and Shinichi Kudou are now cousins. Twitter lost its mind, Tumblr lost its mind, Discord servers are being created and now everyone is wondering what the hell should they do. 

I’m going to be honest, if you are a creator for KaiShin, please don’t delete your work. 

Either archive it or orphan it but please don’t delete it.

You put time and effort into this, into something you love, and just because the mangaka is so SO set in his ways of every single ship being friends to lovers does not mean you have to follow the same format. This doesn’t make you an incest shipper or whatever, it doesn’t make you a person who you don’t want to be, it’s just something that you had no idea of knowing was going to happen and I hope that you can look back at it fondly. 

Anyways, for those enjoying Kaishin on the sidelines all I’m going to say is Pick a Lane. 

Ignore Canon 

If you are an old time shipper then this may not be new for you. I mean Gosho literally had another ship that turned out to be cousins like at this point it’s ‘who is my cousin’ being played in the entire Detective Conan manga. You either already guessed it, are an active incest shipper (hi, hello, tis a me) or you are used to your favourites dying. This situation is no fucking different. 

Wolfwood is dead, in my head he is alive and well and treating his Plant husband right. 

Sora is missing, not in my head where he is kissing Roxas and Riku and Kairi and whoever else wants to get at the sunshine of the KH universe. 

Ben is dead, NOT IN MY REYLO FANFICTION. 

If you are a person who actively kept up with the manga or actively kept up with the show it is possible to ignore canon because they do not suddenly go super deep into being cousins and knowing about each other. They both don’t know if they are cousins or else the jig would be up immediately and the manga would be finished. You CAN ignore canon and if Kaishin is a ship that brings you joy and just serotonin production I implore you guys to choose this lane if you still want to enjoy Kaishin. 

It’s by far the healthiest option and teaches you how to curate your own fandom experience. 

Alternate Universes and You 

I was in the Hannibal fandom for a while and I clearly remember the ‘Hannibal is not a Cannibal’ tag on AO3. I thought it was hilarious but I would never dare to make fun of it because that is a prime example of CURATING YOUR FANDOM EXPERIENCE. 

Here are some examples on how you can start tagging:

Or just make a quick blurb of how you mean this drawing/fic to be perceived. Again, this is your experience and you get to make the space you want to make. It’s up to you to make/interact with the content that makes you most comfortable. Again, if you want to delve into AU’s then that is up to you and I think it’s a pretty good lane for those who just feel weird about the whole reveal. 

Stepping Away

Your moral values are your own, people, and I am in no position or even want to judge them. If you feel uncomfortable about this now, see your love for Kaishin diminishing because of the reveal or just don’t see yourself shipping Kaishin in the future then you are more than capable of measuring your response and stepping away from the ship entirely for your own health. 

Is it going to be sad? Yes, but they are fictional and I recommend having an idea of what you have in your life outside of fandom that makes you happy that you can focus on as you go through this. College, work, whatever hobbies you may have taken up–hell put all your eggs into another ship that you know also brings you joy! 

Do not let this dictate your day or your month or your year. This is just fandom, you don’t have to make a big statement unless asked about it, you do not have to justify your decision to anybody, curate.your.fandom.experience. 

I’m going to end this with a repeat of what I just said. 

This is all fictional. We are playing in a fictional sandbox where we can all make whatever we want in any capacity and as long as it is tagged correctly then nobody’s lines have to be crossed. If you just started enjoying Kaishin, find out how you still want to enjoy it or step away. If you have shipped Kaishin for a while, do the same fucking thing! The east side of the fandom is having a field day with the movie, why can’t the west have some fun too?! 

I’m going to ship Kaishin (however all my reblogs will be moved to my other blog for incest-y stuff and just other content people may not vibe with in general) and hell I might just join the Kaishin Big Bang for the hell of it because I have been shipping this ship since I was 15 years old and I’m about to be 30 so….I’m staying fucking seated cause you aren’t getting me out of this chair, Aoyama, you aren’t getting me to ship Aoko with anyone other an Akako so suck on that.

ARC Review of Not Another Love Song by Julie Soto

Rating: 4.25/5 Heat Level: 3.5/5 Publication Date: July 16th

Premise:

Violinist Gwen Jackson is chosen as Manhattan Pop's new first chair over Xander Throne, a cellist from an famous musical family. Though Xander is initially hostile, the attraction is undeniable as they begin to collaborate with each other.

My review:

The sensual violin-cello romance of my DREAMS! Not Another Love Song is the perfect combination of classical roots and a contemporary setting and plot; Julie Soto made the choice to have neither Gwen nor Xander super tied down by the conventional classical music world; both of them play for a pops orchestra rather than a more traditional ensemble, and Xander is cellist in an electric strings band that sounds somewhat similar to 2CELLOS (is Xander Thorne the Hauser of this world? Possibly). They're creatives who push boundaries, and it serves their romance really well because they play with the music, and it's the music that's the bedrock of their relationship: there's flirting via sheet music, their first duet in public is rife with sexual tension (in their world, it's basically an invitation to slow dance), and a large portion of the book is centered around one composition in progress that encapsulates Alex and Gwen's relationship.

So, this story was originally published as Reylo fanfiction and you do see the influence; Gwen is a scrappy underdog heroine— an orphan, slightly naive and insecure, but of course Xander and other characters see *something great* in her even when she can't. She isn't a pushover though, and by the end she stands her ground at a critical juncture in her and Xander's relationship. Xander a bit of an asshole to Gwen despite almost IMMEDIATELY falling for her, and it understandably takes her some time to warm up to him. Like, she's starstruck to an extent and obviously physically attracted (and not just because he's biiiiig like any Kylo Ren-inspired hero has to be— I don't make the rules sorry), but she quickly understands he's.... quite flawed so he doesn't stay on that pedestal for long. He's the one with the family baggage, mommy issues, and difficulties stemming from being a young prodigy, as well as a history of being taken advantage of by the adults and mentors around him. And that's something that carries over into the plot of this story— both Gwen and Xander are relatively young (they're both in their twenties), and still in the process of finding out who they are as individuals and artists as well as a couple, and they both struggle to figure out who they can trust professionally (ex: there's a very accurate Scooter Braun reference somewhere in this book) and personally.

The sex:

I mean look, what you see happening on the cover? That's exactly what we get in the book ("You have to be gentle with her neck"???? I SCREAMED because, you know, cello neck.... her neck....). And it's hotter because Xander does his utmost to remind Gwen of it via his composition in some very public forums afterwards... multiple times. It's sensual, and shockingly romantic real fast. AND there is also a very hot sex-while-someone's-on-the-phone moment.

Overall:

As far as contemporary romances go, Julie Soto is doing the utmost to make classical music sexy again— and the love story itself is enhanced by that in such a novel way, and I can't recommend this book enough, preferably with your favorite rendition of Vitali's Chaconne in G Minor playing background.

Magnus Bane / Alexander Lightwood

This was my first ship. I wrote my first full novel length fic in this fandom, and I even have a tattoo about it! They will always hold a special place in my heart as the ship that sailed me back into my passion for art and writing.

Reylo

So um, here's the thing. I'm not in the Reylo fandom. I enjoyed the movies well enough, but didn't have any particular interest in them beyond "oh, that was fun to see in theaters, I enjoyed it."

Many years ago, however, before I was involved in fandom at all, a friend of mine sent me a link to a Reylo fic on AO3 that she was obsessed with. It's the only Reylo fic I've ever read.

Long story short (I'll elaborate in another post sometime if I'm ever asked), it ended my impending marriage and changed the course of my life.

I have no idea what the fic was called or whom it was written by.

One day I should track that author down and thank them. I mean obviously other factors played into it, I'm not completely unhinged (well, debatable), but it was the spark that lit the flame.

So anyway, these two will always be important to me even though I'm not part of their fandom. 🖤

I'm currently obsessing over KimVegas, KimArm, and ArmKimChay. If you notice a common denominator, shhh no you don't. ✨ I just didn't feel right using them in the three because they're all just extensions of my KinnPorsche the Series / KimChay addiction. 😅

I generally consider Malec to be my first ship, as they were the first ship I was active in any fandom community for.

However, they're probably not really my first ship.

I was baited into fandom as an adult by a friend who lured me into watching The Vampire Diaries. I kind of shipped Delena, but assumed they wouldn't end up together because he was the second / bad boy love interest and that's just not how the formula goes.

Little did I know 😌 that universe is far too much of a clusterfuck to care about formulas and industry norms.

Anyway I did write an Elijah/Hailey fic and post it on FFnet when I first started writing again after years of no artistic endeavors whatsoever. It's still there, but I choose to pretend it isn't. Straight smut is not my forte. 😅 And it's... well, you can tell I was a bit rusty. 😂

I tend to gravitate more toward TV shows than movies, so I think the last one I watched might've been over the holidays. It's a pretty great musical--Mrs. Santa Claus gets fed up with being taken for granted, takes the sleigh on a joyride, and gets temporarily stranded in early 1900s New York. While there she protests for women's suffrage, fights for the rights of child workers, helps to reunite a family divided by an ocean, and repeatedly demonstrates the spirit of acab.

Yeah, you heard me. It's socialist acab Mrs. C here to sing dank tunes and fight for your rights.

Highly recommend 10/10.

I was tagged for this by @dannybagpipesarecalling back in November, and then I got stumped on the first question for an embaressingly long amount of time. It's been so long that I'm sure I've missed whatever occasion this was for, so I won't tag anyone--but if anyone wants to share then please feel free.

Three ships: At the moment, I really like Ianthe/Harrow from the Locked Tomb books. The concept is just so funny to me (especially considering that Gideon has to watch them 24/7 and can't say anything or let anyone know she's there). And I'm replaying Andromeda agaim, so Sara Ryder/Liam Kosta is always in my thoughts--as is Sara/Peebee. But I slightly prefer her relationship with Liam, and I've never quite been into them as an OT3. I didn't want to pick something I've actually written for (published other otherwise), so after a lot of wasting time, my third will be... (it took me weeks to decide on this) Bobby/St. John from the X-Men movies. They were my ship back in middle school

First ever ship: I think it was Kikyo/Sesshomaru? It could have been Link/Zelda though, and I also have strong memories of liking Rogue/Remy very early on. John Sheppard/Elizabeth Weir is also a possibility. (I never did find out why we used to call them "Sparky"...) Actually, maybe it was House/Wilson that I shipped first? I'm not sure I knew what shipping really was, yet, with the other stuff, even though I was already into fanfiction and art.

Last Song: Fast Car, at time of originally writing this. I've listened to both the original and the new cover frequently over the last few months. Honorable mention for dragostea din tei, which my dashboard keeps reblogging. It's been giving me war flashbacks of IB exam season when my homeroom teacher would have that song blasting when we were supposed to be having a free study period.

Last Movie: It was a netflix horror movie called Night Teeth. I don't recall if I knowingly chose to watch it, or if it just happened on its own. It was better than it should have been, but not much better than you'd expect of it. A little better than the average low budget Netflix vampire movie. Jorge Lendeborg and Alfie Allen were good, but very little else was.

Currently reading: The Traitor Baru Cormorant. Not sure if I like it yet.

Currently Watching: Finished Shadow and Bone. Good performances all around, though I can definitely see why people joke that it's Netflix's live action Reylo fanfic. I guess it's sad it's not going to continue; I was a lot more interested in the third season stinger, and the promise of the Crows' adventure than anything that had happened so far, but I guess it's at least something that they managed to finish up their primary story before getting cancelled. I think it was a generally satisfying ending. I've also started something called Dare Me, that came to me recommended, but I haven't figured out what the show is about yet.

Currently consuming: At the time of writing, it was tomatoes and bread.

Currently craving: Not anything in particular tbh. I'll probably have toast next?

i've been getting ads for this book of the month club or whatever lately, but i just got another one i hadn't seen before where the person in it is recommending the love hypothesis, like hey. hang on. you can't fool me. i know that book. i know it's just reylo fanfiction with the serial numbers filed off. get out of here with that shit.

To be fair there are some fandoms that have really excellent fanfiction and HP, and Dramione specifically, is one of them. I definitely agree you shouldn't be recommending fanfiction to people who don't read it and especially if they aren't even in the fandom, however I've apsolutley read fanfiction that is as good or even better than some published romance books I've read. And there are a lot of fics that are so removed from their canon they might as well be original works and can be enjoyed as such.

I don’t read Dramione and I never will (it’s nothing against it in particular, but I was never a big HP fan and it’s anathema to me now) so I can’t testify to that, but to be real ANY fandom has the potential for good fic. It’s not about the fandom, it’s about randomly good writers deciding to write it—and popular fandoms have more writers, which means more quality writers, just in a numbers game. I think ships like Reylo and Dramione get a rep for a capacity for better writers because they traffic in a very popular dynamic that naturally gets a lot of people into it, including people who would write good fic for anything if they liked it because they’re good.

No matter how quality the fic is though, I think that there is this sense at points that fic is this secret that’s actually even better than books. And first off, the secret is out and has been out. Second, books shouldn’t be seen as this mountain for a different creative work to top. Fic isn’t better than books. It’s just different. I’ve personally never been able to get into fic hardcore. Even with talented writers, I can’t do more than a short 5 chapter deal max. It’s not because it’s not good though—it’s because it’s not what I like? Which is the book.

And of course there are fics that are better in quality than books I’ve read. There are also absolute dog shit fics out there. But if I compare the best fic I've read to the best book I've read, there is no comparison for me—and I don't think there should be. Just the fact that we treat fics differently on a critique level means that to me, you can’t compare them. That’s the thing about a fic that is so removed from canon that it might as well be original—it still has, and should have, the cushion of being fic. It still has the cushion of a built in audience. That doesn’t make it lesser—it makes it different.

Not so Serious Conversation Starter

I just watched an amazing video essay (I highly recommend it)!

AN: a lot do this won’t make sense if you don’t watch the video, but it’s still ok to read it if you don’t. The video is a lil long😭) but it’s so worth it

It made me realize that even though I am shy and introverted, the fanfiction I read in my youth was mostly all white and not inclusive, and that has an additional effect on how I write my shy/introverted black women characters and reader inserts.

A lot of it is actually a part of white women centering themselves and whiteness as the main part of the story/media/fandom, and I had no idea!

I am not upset, more so than morbidly curious.

Excited even! Because who knew that could be a thing!?!?! This doesn’t make everything I’ve written invalid or tarnish what I’ve created, but I will be doing things more mindfully going forward.

I wanna change that, or rather point out how the way I write “shy” and points out why now I’m the forwent that there are more people of color sharing and writing their stores, it feels so different even if we are doing the same thing. I kinda wanna use this as an opportunity to start that conversation.

I think it’s important to engage with these kinds of things even if it’s hard to hear. If we want to continue to make fandom spaces more inclusive, it’s a must!

A lot of the video is using Reylo as an example, so please don’t make that a whole thing with me if you don’t like it.

Please, give it a chance!

It’s not just blantant hate, it’s thought out well constructed criticism and she’s not saying it’s “wrong”, just pointing out another perspective I am sure not everyone is aware of, but I think it can be taken a step further.

The infantilization, the “virgin”, the shy girl…. while those are valid experiences, hell even My experience in some cases, I think a lot of it is more ingrained in us than we think, not just because it’s “relatable/validating”, but because we have all grown up on heavily white female centered OC’s, or e dishing characters used as a self insert for the white experience.

Reading that over and over and over again, had more of an effect than we think!

This doesn’t apply to everyone at all, but if there is a small chance that this may be possible for others, I just wanted to share! To start a conversation. (Take a shot every time I say “start a conversation”🥴)

This YouTube video just kickstarted this thought process and I am in desperate need to talk about it.

While this is just one case, I would also like to add, I think they shy or inexperienced thing is different from writers or color and queer writers as well.

It comes from a different place within us because we aren’t upholding whiteness or the “stereotypical” experience regurgitated to us for so many years, but from a place of not seeing out experiences. We are combatting all the stereotypes laid against us against our will, so it always reads a little different. It will automatically feel different.

However, I know when I was a young writer just starting out, a lot of the times we are just doing what we think “works”. What other people are doing.

But that is slowly changing for the newer generation of writers, because fandom is still major Italy white, but there are increasingly small corners for queer, make, and writers across so many cultures and ethnicities that didn’t exist back in 2014/16.

I’m pretty fucking sure there is not a goddamn interview Anywhere of Thea mentioning how this is a reskinned reylo story exploring the deep inner workings of internalized racism because that's never what it fucking was.

Did OP... watch interviews of Thea talking about her experiences with racism and now they've mashing the concept of this story together with that interview because I can’t for the fucking love of god remember an instance where Thea rolled up to an interview and said This Story:

is anything but a modified reylo fanfiction. She mentioned how she added some Southeast Asian influences into the book that were not in the original fic but the original was based in the world of Star Wars so that makes since.

I remember that interview.

Editing a fanfic to be publish friendly takes A Lot of effort and isn't as simple as using the 'find and replace' feature in Microsoft Word like I think OP is assuming it is. There's plenty of opportunity to put in whatever new worldbuilding makes since for the story.

I’ve been following this publishing since I read Landscapes With a Blur of Conquerors, back when she was actively still writing it as reylo fanfiction.

The Sword of the Jedi series is still my favorite fucking Star Wars fanfic by her I can't recommend this one enough.

If you liked Hurricane Wars and love Star Wars you'll love this one.

It's a really fun 'What If' on the sequel trilogy where the change is 'What if Luke and young Ben found Rey as a child on Jakku and she got to grow up at Luke's Jedi academy?'

A far better storytelling of those characters than we got out of the actual media. I fuckin' blew through it in a week the first time I read it.

Go read it if you get the chance.

They’ve never read the fanfics and they’ll never read these books so how the fuck would they know what the fuck is even in it? How would they know how they differ?

Now, I HAVE read both and I can tell everyone right now from simply having read the original fic; it’s very 'Alternate Universe/AU'. I mean, yeah, it uses some of the basic concepts of the ‘Star Wars universe’ but mostly it’s just new story using well established characters and themes.

So right from the start this fic was kinda it's own thing in it's own world with it's own rules and that's when it WAS directly a reylo fanfic.

These are original works, regardless of the characters they borrowed to make them. These fics would not exist if the writers didn't sit the fuck down and write them.

Saying these books ain't valid all because they started out as fanfics is fucking stupid. EP9 was written by 'professionals' and had a scene with three characters who know full fucking well Stormtroopers can fly say 'They fly now' so I know for a fact fanfic writers put more consideration into storytelling than JJ fucking Abrams or Chris chuckfuck Terrio ever did.

To simply Sit Down and Write takes Skill and Effort, something both of theses writers have in goddamn spades and OP has NONE of because all they post is broken English run-on paragraphs of shitass hateful opinions no one in the tags fucking asked for.

What do you think of Reylo? Do you feel like it's reverse Anidala?

I'm not too big on the pairing.

And I fail to see many of the similarities some draw between them and Anidala. So, no I do not feel like it is reverse Anidala.

But with that being said, I was quite excited for them after TFA. And I was quite disappointed with how the last two movies handled them. Maybe I need to rewatch that trilogy, but to me it felt like the pairing was there just to be there, it served no real purpose the majority of the time. It was like they had two attractive actors and wanted them together on screen, without thinking of a story that fit. Kylo healing Rey in TROS could have happened regardless of their romantic relationship, the dyad wasn't connected to them being romantically involved. And they could have had their rivalry without having to having to become lovers.

On paper. I like them. I think they have an interesting dynamic, in the right setting. But unfortunately, for me, that wasn't the sequel trilogy. However, I'm not against reading fanfictions about them in the future. And I would be open to receiving recommendations.

Also, if there are any Reylo writers out there. Please stop tagging Anidala when they barely appear.

This is all my personal opinion. I don't know if this opinion is wildly shared or not. I ask you all to respect this. I have seen countless of other blogs and people getting harassed by all different sides of the SW fandom for expressing their honest opinion on Reylo and the ST in general. Luckily, I don't think any of those people are on this blog. But if some of them should stumble across this post, please keep your aggressions to yourself. But I'm open to having a civil discussion, if anyone is interested in it.

Sylki, adding to the list of my couples with an extremely unsatisfying ending. Not horrible either, because the writers at least tried a minimum to make sense of this purge. Unlike Bellarke and Reylo who were unmatchable levels of horrible ending. So I would put Sylki on the same level as Elijah & Hayley (Haylijah), Cordelia & Angel, and Klaus & Calorine (Klaroline) in terms of ending. These are disasters. But disasters that the screenwriters have at least tried to embroider. I guess it's better than nothing. (Seriously, when you don't know how to write good tragedies, we abstain)

Good. Now, go delve into fanfiction to forget, or find other fictional couples whose story this time has a happy ending. For Sylki, I highly recommend the 2 seasons of the Korean series Tales of the nine tailed. The season 2 is Tales of the nine tailed 1938. Lee Rang's character is very reminiscent of Loki. Immortal. Complicated sibling relationship. Sacrifices himself at the end by dying for his older brother, then returns in season 2 for a new temporal line where he finds love with a happy ending.
