Have you ever read a fanfic so good that you're baffled as to why it only has 21 kudos? Have you ever wished you could more easily discover well-written fics even if they don't have a lot of kudos yet?

From my deep shelves of bookmarks and too many hours spent reading fanfic, may I present: Underrated Fic Recs: fanfiction with under 1,000 kudos that deserves more love.

I joined Tumblr in October of 2023, solely to be able to read three Star Wars fan comics that I found on Google (couldn’t view them without an account!).

For many months, I only interacted with these comics, as I was rather confused about how the site worked and really didn’t spend that much time on it.

Then, summer of ‘24, I was invited to the Reylo community. From there, I began looking around for some written fanfiction recommendations. I didn’t understand how to use tags on AO3, and I didn’t want to read any spice, but the community was so helpful and understanding and gave me many fics that I’ve come to absolutely adore! 

I spent the remainder of summer reading fanfiction, experiencing those moments truly unique to those in fandom culture (crying at 3am, phone rotation locked so you can curl up on your side, screen brightness turned all the way down. You know the drill). 

Then, on August 22, sometime between 11:40 and 12:05 PM, I fell headfirst into the Cherik fandom. I’d watched the X-Men movies over summer, preparing to see Deadpool and Wolverine. However, that day, I happened to have been in the middle of re-reading the book Fangirl, in which there’s two little lines on page 234 about Professor X and Magneto being gay. I just so happened to mention this to a friend during lunch, and she pulled me aside and showed me an edit and… that was that. I was completely invested. 

I began reading Cherik fanfiction, and it became increasingly clear that investing in an AO3 account would be incredibly helpful. So, on September 8th, my account got approved and I posted my first ever fanfiction. 

Since then, I’ve written over 18 different Cherik fics, ranging from oneshots to series. I’ve posted 107,457 words. I’ve read hundreds (I wish I was exaggerating) of beautiful, life-changing, funny, horribly sad and incredibly fluffy works by other authors. And I’ve found a community. 

The Cherik and X-Men fandom is the first truly active fandom I’ve ever participated in. While my Reylo and Stormpilot days were lovely, it was clear that I’d missed the excitement during the time in which canon content was actually coming out, as I joined the Star Wars fandom late. My other fandoms in years before, well, I’d simply been too young and too timid to really be interacting at all. and my offline friends and I have always had greatly varying interests. 

It’s silly to say, maybe, but I feel so validated as a person by the fact that I’m a part of this fandom. Hyperfixations are how I navigate the world. I’ve always lived further in the plane of imagination than the one of reality, between my naturally bookish nature and some persistent medical issues that… well, have caused issues. This community makes me feel like what I’m interested in and the things that make me happy are worth doing. 

Thank you to every single person in this fandom. Thank you for a truly spectacular year.

Kaishin Reveal and What It Means For You

Okay I need everyone to keep their shit together because I think this is being blown out of proportion. What follows is a quick rant about what the hell is going in the DCMK fandom and what is going on in fandom in general cause I don’t know why I’m seeing so many people lose their shit over something that was most likely going to happen followed by a quick lesson by a ‘fandom elder’ on how to ignore canon and make a ship your own. 

Spoilers ahead and whatnot. 

April 11th the DCMK 27 movie came out and information was revealed about how Kaito Kuroba and Shinichi Kudou are now cousins. Twitter lost its mind, Tumblr lost its mind, Discord servers are being created and now everyone is wondering what the hell should they do. 

I’m going to be honest, if you are a creator for KaiShin, please don’t delete your work. 

Either archive it or orphan it but please don’t delete it.

You put time and effort into this, into something you love, and just because the mangaka is so SO set in his ways of every single ship being friends to lovers does not mean you have to follow the same format. This doesn’t make you an incest shipper or whatever, it doesn’t make you a person who you don’t want to be, it’s just something that you had no idea of knowing was going to happen and I hope that you can look back at it fondly. 

Anyways, for those enjoying Kaishin on the sidelines all I’m going to say is Pick a Lane. 

Ignore Canon 

If you are an old time shipper then this may not be new for you. I mean Gosho literally had another ship that turned out to be cousins like at this point it’s ‘who is my cousin’ being played in the entire Detective Conan manga. You either already guessed it, are an active incest shipper (hi, hello, tis a me) or you are used to your favourites dying. This situation is no fucking different. 

Wolfwood is dead, in my head he is alive and well and treating his Plant husband right. 

Sora is missing, not in my head where he is kissing Roxas and Riku and Kairi and whoever else wants to get at the sunshine of the KH universe. 

Ben is dead, NOT IN MY REYLO FANFICTION. 

If you are a person who actively kept up with the manga or actively kept up with the show it is possible to ignore canon because they do not suddenly go super deep into being cousins and knowing about each other. They both don’t know if they are cousins or else the jig would be up immediately and the manga would be finished. You CAN ignore canon and if Kaishin is a ship that brings you joy and just serotonin production I implore you guys to choose this lane if you still want to enjoy Kaishin. 

It’s by far the healthiest option and teaches you how to curate your own fandom experience. 

Alternate Universes and You 

I was in the Hannibal fandom for a while and I clearly remember the ‘Hannibal is not a Cannibal’ tag on AO3. I thought it was hilarious but I would never dare to make fun of it because that is a prime example of CURATING YOUR FANDOM EXPERIENCE. 

Here are some examples on how you can start tagging:

Or just make a quick blurb of how you mean this drawing/fic to be perceived. Again, this is your experience and you get to make the space you want to make. It’s up to you to make/interact with the content that makes you most comfortable. Again, if you want to delve into AU’s then that is up to you and I think it’s a pretty good lane for those who just feel weird about the whole reveal. 

Stepping Away

Your moral values are your own, people, and I am in no position or even want to judge them. If you feel uncomfortable about this now, see your love for Kaishin diminishing because of the reveal or just don’t see yourself shipping Kaishin in the future then you are more than capable of measuring your response and stepping away from the ship entirely for your own health. 

Is it going to be sad? Yes, but they are fictional and I recommend having an idea of what you have in your life outside of fandom that makes you happy that you can focus on as you go through this. College, work, whatever hobbies you may have taken up–hell put all your eggs into another ship that you know also brings you joy! 

Do not let this dictate your day or your month or your year. This is just fandom, you don’t have to make a big statement unless asked about it, you do not have to justify your decision to anybody, curate.your.fandom.experience. 

I’m going to end this with a repeat of what I just said. 

This is all fictional. We are playing in a fictional sandbox where we can all make whatever we want in any capacity and as long as it is tagged correctly then nobody’s lines have to be crossed. If you just started enjoying Kaishin, find out how you still want to enjoy it or step away. If you have shipped Kaishin for a while, do the same fucking thing! The east side of the fandom is having a field day with the movie, why can’t the west have some fun too?! 

I’m going to ship Kaishin (however all my reblogs will be moved to my other blog for incest-y stuff and just other content people may not vibe with in general) and hell I might just join the Kaishin Big Bang for the hell of it because I have been shipping this ship since I was 15 years old and I’m about to be 30 so….I’m staying fucking seated cause you aren’t getting me out of this chair, Aoyama, you aren’t getting me to ship Aoko with anyone other an Akako so suck on that.

books I read in 2024:

some thoughts about this:

this only includes books new to me (not rereads). i tend to reread when I'm stressed.

on that front this year was a tale of two halves: I read 37 new books by the end of June and only 15 from July-Dec.

about halfway through last year - exactly five years after I completed my master's degree in history - I was finally able to start reading history books for fun again.

this suggests that around five years after I leave my current job I may be able to start reading nz history for fun.

I recommend:

fiction: code name verity, elizabeth wein. An intricate puzzle box of a story about two young women during WWII; I was genuinely shocked that wein had the courage to stick the landing.

sff: dead country, max gladstone. Another intricate puzzle box, this time about coming back to your home town for your father's funeral and trying to reconcile who you are now with who they all knew when you were growing up. Honorary mention to the singing hills cycle by nghi vo.

history: a savage war of peace: Algeria, 1954 - 1962 by alistair horne. This one is about the Algerian war of independence, an area of history about which I was shockingly ignorant. I am a little less ignorant now. Horne does a good job of setting out the phases of the war and the interactions of the many and varied factions: the book is thorough but very readable. I found it fascinating.

nonfiction: aftermath: the remnants of war by donovan webster. I was trying to find info about the 100+ year effort to clean up WWI ordnance from the 'red zone' of france - there is startlingly little in English. the book has a broader focus, asking 'what happens when the battles are over?' Webster visited and interviewed the people dealing with this question for many of the big wars of the 20th century. As well as WWI he looked at the unburied dead of Stalingrad, nuclear test contamination in Nevada, chemical contaminants in Vietnam, landmines from the desert in Kuwait. One of my only critiques was the lack of footnotes/bibliography: Webster was a journalist, not an academic or a historian.

i do not recommend:

fiction: the hurricane wars by thea guanzon. I found nothing interesting about this book. It has trope tags in place of a plot, characters or setting. (it is also thinly disguised reylo fanfiction and I feel like that explains a Lot).

nonfiction: the myth of the andalusian paradise by darío fernández-morera. this is a book with an axe to grind about the popular idealisation of Islamic Spain; it over-corrects at times into outright vilification which appears to me equally untrustworthy.

ARC Review of Not Another Love Song by Julie Soto

Rating: 4.25/5 Heat Level: 3.5/5 Publication Date: July 16th

Premise:

Violinist Gwen Jackson is chosen as Manhattan Pop's new first chair over Xander Throne, a cellist from an famous musical family. Though Xander is initially hostile, the attraction is undeniable as they begin to collaborate with each other.

My review:

The sensual violin-cello romance of my DREAMS! Not Another Love Song is the perfect combination of classical roots and a contemporary setting and plot; Julie Soto made the choice to have neither Gwen nor Xander super tied down by the conventional classical music world; both of them play for a pops orchestra rather than a more traditional ensemble, and Xander is cellist in an electric strings band that sounds somewhat similar to 2CELLOS (is Xander Thorne the Hauser of this world? Possibly). They're creatives who push boundaries, and it serves their romance really well because they play with the music, and it's the music that's the bedrock of their relationship: there's flirting via sheet music, their first duet in public is rife with sexual tension (in their world, it's basically an invitation to slow dance), and a large portion of the book is centered around one composition in progress that encapsulates Alex and Gwen's relationship.

So, this story was originally published as Reylo fanfiction and you do see the influence; Gwen is a scrappy underdog heroine— an orphan, slightly naive and insecure, but of course Xander and other characters see *something great* in her even when she can't. She isn't a pushover though, and by the end she stands her ground at a critical juncture in her and Xander's relationship. Xander a bit of an asshole to Gwen despite almost IMMEDIATELY falling for her, and it understandably takes her some time to warm up to him. Like, she's starstruck to an extent and obviously physically attracted (and not just because he's biiiiig like any Kylo Ren-inspired hero has to be— I don't make the rules sorry), but she quickly understands he's.... quite flawed so he doesn't stay on that pedestal for long. He's the one with the family baggage, mommy issues, and difficulties stemming from being a young prodigy, as well as a history of being taken advantage of by the adults and mentors around him. And that's something that carries over into the plot of this story— both Gwen and Xander are relatively young (they're both in their twenties), and still in the process of finding out who they are as individuals and artists as well as a couple, and they both struggle to figure out who they can trust professionally (ex: there's a very accurate Scooter Braun reference somewhere in this book) and personally.

The sex:

I mean look, what you see happening on the cover? That's exactly what we get in the book ("You have to be gentle with her neck"???? I SCREAMED because, you know, cello neck.... her neck....). And it's hotter because Xander does his utmost to remind Gwen of it via his composition in some very public forums afterwards... multiple times. It's sensual, and shockingly romantic real fast. AND there is also a very hot sex-while-someone's-on-the-phone moment.

Overall:

As far as contemporary romances go, Julie Soto is doing the utmost to make classical music sexy again— and the love story itself is enhanced by that in such a novel way, and I can't recommend this book enough, preferably with your favorite rendition of Vitali's Chaconne in G Minor playing background.

I was tagged for this by @dannybagpipesarecalling back in November, and then I got stumped on the first question for an embaressingly long amount of time. It's been so long that I'm sure I've missed whatever occasion this was for, so I won't tag anyone--but if anyone wants to share then please feel free.

Three ships: At the moment, I really like Ianthe/Harrow from the Locked Tomb books. The concept is just so funny to me (especially considering that Gideon has to watch them 24/7 and can't say anything or let anyone know she's there). And I'm replaying Andromeda agaim, so Sara Ryder/Liam Kosta is always in my thoughts--as is Sara/Peebee. But I slightly prefer her relationship with Liam, and I've never quite been into them as an OT3. I didn't want to pick something I've actually written for (published other otherwise), so after a lot of wasting time, my third will be... (it took me weeks to decide on this) Bobby/St. John from the X-Men movies. They were my ship back in middle school

First ever ship: I think it was Kikyo/Sesshomaru? It could have been Link/Zelda though, and I also have strong memories of liking Rogue/Remy very early on. John Sheppard/Elizabeth Weir is also a possibility. (I never did find out why we used to call them "Sparky"...) Actually, maybe it was House/Wilson that I shipped first? I'm not sure I knew what shipping really was, yet, with the other stuff, even though I was already into fanfiction and art.

Last Song: Fast Car, at time of originally writing this. I've listened to both the original and the new cover frequently over the last few months. Honorable mention for dragostea din tei, which my dashboard keeps reblogging. It's been giving me war flashbacks of IB exam season when my homeroom teacher would have that song blasting when we were supposed to be having a free study period.

Last Movie: It was a netflix horror movie called Night Teeth. I don't recall if I knowingly chose to watch it, or if it just happened on its own. It was better than it should have been, but not much better than you'd expect of it. A little better than the average low budget Netflix vampire movie. Jorge Lendeborg and Alfie Allen were good, but very little else was.

Currently reading: The Traitor Baru Cormorant. Not sure if I like it yet.

Currently Watching: Finished Shadow and Bone. Good performances all around, though I can definitely see why people joke that it's Netflix's live action Reylo fanfic. I guess it's sad it's not going to continue; I was a lot more interested in the third season stinger, and the promise of the Crows' adventure than anything that had happened so far, but I guess it's at least something that they managed to finish up their primary story before getting cancelled. I think it was a generally satisfying ending. I've also started something called Dare Me, that came to me recommended, but I haven't figured out what the show is about yet.

Currently consuming: At the time of writing, it was tomatoes and bread.

Currently craving: Not anything in particular tbh. I'll probably have toast next?

i've been getting ads for this book of the month club or whatever lately, but i just got another one i hadn't seen before where the person in it is recommending the love hypothesis, like hey. hang on. you can't fool me. i know that book. i know it's just reylo fanfiction with the serial numbers filed off. get out of here with that shit.

To be fair there are some fandoms that have really excellent fanfiction and HP, and Dramione specifically, is one of them. I definitely agree you shouldn't be recommending fanfiction to people who don't read it and especially if they aren't even in the fandom, however I've apsolutley read fanfiction that is as good or even better than some published romance books I've read. And there are a lot of fics that are so removed from their canon they might as well be original works and can be enjoyed as such.

I don’t read Dramione and I never will (it’s nothing against it in particular, but I was never a big HP fan and it’s anathema to me now) so I can’t testify to that, but to be real ANY fandom has the potential for good fic. It’s not about the fandom, it’s about randomly good writers deciding to write it—and popular fandoms have more writers, which means more quality writers, just in a numbers game. I think ships like Reylo and Dramione get a rep for a capacity for better writers because they traffic in a very popular dynamic that naturally gets a lot of people into it, including people who would write good fic for anything if they liked it because they’re good.

No matter how quality the fic is though, I think that there is this sense at points that fic is this secret that’s actually even better than books. And first off, the secret is out and has been out. Second, books shouldn’t be seen as this mountain for a different creative work to top. Fic isn’t better than books. It’s just different. I’ve personally never been able to get into fic hardcore. Even with talented writers, I can’t do more than a short 5 chapter deal max. It’s not because it’s not good though—it’s because it’s not what I like? Which is the book.

And of course there are fics that are better in quality than books I’ve read. There are also absolute dog shit fics out there. But if I compare the best fic I've read to the best book I've read, there is no comparison for me—and I don't think there should be. Just the fact that we treat fics differently on a critique level means that to me, you can’t compare them. That’s the thing about a fic that is so removed from canon that it might as well be original—it still has, and should have, the cushion of being fic. It still has the cushion of a built in audience. That doesn’t make it lesser—it makes it different.

I’m pretty fucking sure there is not a goddamn interview Anywhere of Thea mentioning how this is a reskinned reylo story exploring the deep inner workings of internalized racism because that's never what it fucking was.

Did OP... watch interviews of Thea talking about her experiences with racism and now they've mashing the concept of this story together with that interview because I can’t for the fucking love of god remember an instance where Thea rolled up to an interview and said This Story:

is anything but a modified reylo fanfiction. She mentioned how she added some Southeast Asian influences into the book that were not in the original fic but the original was based in the world of Star Wars so that makes since.

I remember that interview.

Editing a fanfic to be publish friendly takes A Lot of effort and isn't as simple as using the 'find and replace' feature in Microsoft Word like I think OP is assuming it is. There's plenty of opportunity to put in whatever new worldbuilding makes since for the story.

I’ve been following this publishing since I read Landscapes With a Blur of Conquerors, back when she was actively still writing it as reylo fanfiction.

Small segway in somewhat related conversation:

The Sword of the Jedi series is still my favorite fucking Star Wars fanfic by her I can't recommend this one enough.

It's a really fun 'What If' on the sequel trilogy where the change is 'What if Luke and young Ben found Rey as a child on Jakku and she got to grow up at Luke's Jedi academy?'

A far better storytelling of those characters than we got out of the actual media. I fuckin' blew through it in a week the first time I read it.

Go read it if you get the chance.

They’ve never read the fanfics and they’ll never read these books so how the fuck would they know what the fuck is even in it? How would they know how they differ?

Now, I HAVE read both and I can tell everyone right now from simply having read the original fic; it’s very 'Alternate Universe/AU'. I mean, yeah, it uses some of the basic concepts of the ‘Star Wars universe’ but mostly it’s just new story using well established characters and themes.

So right from the start this fic was kinda it's own thing in it's own world with it's own rules and that's when it WAS directly a reylo fanfic.

Love Hypothesis/Head Over Feet was So Fucking AU besides borrowing the characters' basic personalities and names it was a whole ass original story.

There was nothing Star Wars Universe in that one At All.

Full Stop.

Adapting these fics into books makes both of them very original works because the source material was already very Alternate Universe as we like to say in the fanfic world. Ali never admitted on record she didn’t craft her own stories and I know she never fucking has because I've read So Many of her fics on AO3 back during that blissful period between The Last Jedi and EP9 that she could publish 30 more reskinned reylo fics and still have more to go. She was And Still Is a Very Proficient Writer and a Goddamn Treat of a smut writer.

With Ali's fics you can feel the horny but most importantly, The Love, and as a furry smut artist I'm Here For That Shit.

This woman is a Goddamned blessing to this fandom and now to published books too. She writes Such Good Smut she could make a sailor blush. I hope her many more years of happy writing with hundreds more publishing deals. I hope she becomes the next harlequin romance writer so she can continue to pay reylo artists to draw covers for her books God Bless they all fuckin' deserves it after the 8 years of constant bombardment with harassment and death threats from stupid fucks like @shallenspren have thrown at us over the years.

These are original works, regardless of the characters they borrowed to make them. These fics would not exist if the writers didn't sit the fuck down and write them.

Saying these books ain't valid all because they started out as fanfics is fucking stupid. EP9 was written by 'professionals' and had a scene with three characters who know full fucking well Stormtroopers can fly say 'They fly now' so I know for a fact fanfic writers put more consideration into storytelling than JJ fucking Abrams or Chris chuckfuck Terrio ever did.

To simply Sit Down and Write takes Skill and Effort, something both of theses writers have in goddamn spades and OP has NONE of because all they post is broken English run-on paragraphs of shitass hateful opinions no one in the tags fucking asked for.

Why they are one of my Reylo Faves

In build a ladder to the stars, @redbelles prose are well crafted, but it’s the way they build a story through snippets of moments strung together on a linear, but undefined timeline that provides for a lyrical quality to their work.  Similar in methodology to angharabbit’s Accusations: 26 Reylo Ficlets, but more poetic in execution.  To be clear, these are not compiled vignettes, but a story of moments (similar in style (not delivery) to Evan S. Connell’s Mrs. Bridge).  Subtle in plot, heavy in Kylo’s internal reflection and Rey’s internal turmoil.  Too much of an arc to be mere character studies, but the characterizations are nearly perfect, I might consider this more of a “relationship/connection study” - as clearly it’s been well thought out by the author, not only who these characters are and what they look like fleshed out, but also how they would interact and connect - and what that looks like fleshed out.  Through all the myriad of allegorical introspection these two jump through, the poetic fact that Kylo Ren’s heart is a desert and Rey is well adapted to navigating (and surviving) a desert is beautiful in it’s simplicity.  

stuck in the cold is one of those fics that will appeal to a wide spectrum of readers, but I think is being missed because of the summary.  So here’s the gist: it’s a modern AU of financially struggling, tough barista Rey pining for awkward, but proper professor Kylo (who is also pining for Rey) being gifted a chance by fate when a snowstorm makes for a “stuck together” situation.  This fic masquerades as a PWP, but is packed with tender longing fueling a chemistry that delivers a ... climax.  Under 10k words, it’s an enjoyable half hour fic before bedtime to leave you with a smile and sweet dreams.  

The Bottom Line 

redbelles has fleshed out versions of Rey and Kylo, and in turn fleshed out a version of “Reylo”, in a curated style that provides for a unique crafting of the Reylo dynamic and well-written, satisfying fics to the fandom.
