FAS3001 Trend Narrative- 'Preppy'

Preppy as a style has significantly changed over the past century, as Thomas Frank discovered in his book ‘The Conquest of Cool’. Indeed, what began as a way of proving status- particularly educationally in America- fluctuated in its popularity and availability to the general public. 

When I first began creating my mood boards for my trend narrative, I explored the various terms that would underpin the aesthetics I interpreted the trend prediction to be. The one I continuously returned to was ‘preppy’, but not in the more modern viewpoint of Gen Z that looks to the fashions of the mid-2000s. Instead, I looked at the 20th Century preppy style in which I believed WGSN was alluding to. For me, this includes well fitted suits, stripes, polo shirts, and deep primary colours. This style I was looking at is most aligned with designers like Ralph Lauren, who has become a key influencer for the Ivy ‘preppy’ style of the mid 20th Century according to Avery Trufelman (Articles of Interest, episode 4). 

As a trend, I am increasingly fascinated by how it is gradually adapting to fit the more modern trends and stay fashionable and popular. Indeed, in the past, more fitted looks including casual rolled up shirts and suits with wide 1930s style lapels and ties were visibly popular (Hayashida, 1956). Now, however, Ivy styles have adapted to the more slim styled clothing of the 2010s by modernising their tailoring to stay in fashion. 

I spent much of my time on Vogue runway; looking at many different designers it became clear that most collections had some form of preppy clothing even though it was not necessarily their key theme. The main difference I had noticed was that these modern preppy runway outfits- like the above green blazer by Brocki- were more loose fitting than they were in the past and oversized, yet well tailored suits were the biggest change the 21st century has brought to the old preppy style. This was something I really want to communicate across my whole look book: preppy can be oversized and still be smart. Hence, prior to creating my final outcome, this will be a key silhouette for not only my fabrics and silhouette page, but across the whole look book.

Though they’ve worked on the same movies before, this time they land roles that could change their lives forever. Mostly happy fluff, but has some angst. This is Hallmark, so of course it has a happy ending. Many of my favorite tropes have been included: badboy!Kurt who really has a heart of gold and sweetness, famous!Kurt, famous!Blaine, actor!Kurt, actor!Blaine, soulmates, soulmarks, AU Glee, angst with a happy ending, and fluff. There’s also a heavy dose of cheesy Hallmark Christmas Movie writing in both the script and commercials. In true AU form, canon characters abound in various non-canon roles.

Originally this was my Klaine Advent 2018 fic that I brain froze on and knew was confusing because the first 2 chapters were stand-alone, random one shots before I got the idea in chapter 3 for a whole verse. So this is that Hallmark story verse only reworked to make it better and stand on its own. All of the Advent words are included in this fic.
