#rewatching these films continues to be.... difficult. this in particular was a real favourite of mine but it has aged badly

I tried to rank these Films but they ended up being so different, I gave up. I don't really like ranking things in general, so here are some movie thoughts in the order I watched them:
Dog Day Afternoon - Absolutely amazing. Once in a blue moon a film makes my heart race, because it's so gripping. This is one on them. It has a tragic quality in how you pretty much know, that the characters are doomed but since they keep on hoping they aren't you do the same thing. I also liked how it has both a great plot and character exploration. I'll watch it again soon and hope it'll still hold up on a rewatch.
The Godfather - Some very cool scenes. My favourites being the diner scene and the ending. Felt a little slow at times for me personally.
Scarface - A little gory for my taste but I really like the character journey of the mc (even though he's kinda insufferable XD). It does touch on some very interesting themes. My favorite scene is probably the "the world is yours" one.
The Panic in Needle Park - The characters are very charming. Pretty devastating to watch. For this one it felt fitting, that the story kinda meanders. The ending was abrupt but a very special kind of gut punch that just leaves you feeling empty.
ā¦ And Justice for All - I liked the serious moments but I felt that they were cut short. The tone was not very consistent in my opinion.
Scarecrow - Felt weirdly similar to "The Panic in Needle Park", in that the story is a little slow and the ending sad. For this one I wanted to know how the story would continue so bad. The character juxtaposed each other nicely, I think.
Serpico - I was honestly shocked that this was a real story too. From what I've read it seems to be pretty faithful. I really liked that the story had a clear direction that it followed through with. And the criticism of the police corruption was pretty thorough in my opinion.
Bobby Deerfield - I liked the chemistry between the mcs. They were both pretty interesting characters, that linked back to the themes of chance vs risk and mortality. It was weird that he was cheating on his girlfriend though (plus he never told her that he almost died?). This one also left me feeling sad but maybe it could have used a little more drama? (I thought for sure he would scream in the last scene, in the tunnel, but he didn't)
Donnie Brasco - Compared to "Bobby Deerfield" (which I saw before) pretty easy to watch through and engaging. I think some more scenes with Donnie and Lefty hanging out would have helped to convey the connection between them and make the ending hit even harder. I was kinda waiting for a scene where his wife comes in direct contact with the mafia world and a dangerous situation occurs (I think that would have been cool) but since this is also based real people, I guess that never happened. I also didn't really buy the "I am not becoming like them, I am like them" sentiment. Not sure why.
Scent of a Woman - Pretty great! I went in not expecting much and was really surprised! The Colonel is such a character XD It made me laugh out loud multiple times and still felt pretty emotional (I really liked the family dinner scene). It's kind of crazy how different Al Pacino acts in this one. I mean, he seems like a different person in pretty much every movie I've seen so far but in this one he has this particular way of speaking. I really liked it! Also it is sooo satisfying when a (primarily in the beginning) rude, overbearing character gets to direct these traits at someone who deserves it.
The Godfather II - Uuuuh... I might have to rewatch this one ^^' Because I couldn't watch with subtitles and I don't speak Italian, the flashback scenes were a little difficult. Though I gotta say I'm not the biggest fan of flashbacks in films in general, they break the flow a little, you know? All of the Michael stuff was great though. I had a lot of fun trying to figure out everyones schemes (didn't succeed every time, but enough I suppose XD) and the ending was intense! He was so scary, I was genuinely worried for his wife.
Heat - Hmm, not really my cup of tea. Felt very long and I couldn't get behind the characters that well. It did however redeem itself a little in the last 20 min. The showdown was pretty gripping.
The Devil's Advocate - okaaay... what a strange ending ^^' I really enjoyed the concept but I think I would have liked it even more if all of the supernatural elements had been more subtle. For example, I liked the scene where the devil just knew personal stuff about some random guy on the subway because it is very strange but, you know, not as strange as a weird cgi demon face XD I think it would have been cool if the viewer and most characters still wonder if it's really the devil at the end (and then you could have the mom be the only one who is sure of it). Anyways, something I found hilarious is that they make a point of showing that the devil wears pretty high heels, but he's still shorter than everyone else.

Revenge Of The Pink Panther (1978)
"Now this time, I'm going to stand on your shoulders."
"What good would that do?"

MCU Challenge musings
18 weeks. 18 films. The MCU Challenge. In collaboration with Team #Geekstalkers. Collated musings below, all leading to Infinity War.
#1 - Iron Man
Robert Downey Jnr IS Tony Stark, Tony Stark IS Iron Man, Iron Man IS the first MCU Avenger. Without this we wouldnāt have the MCU as we know and love it. Despite that, coming soon after Batmanās triumphant return as it does, I canāt help but feel the identikit Iron Man Begins falls a little flat. The weak MCU villain problem is present and incorrect right from Mk 1 too.
#2 - The Incredible Hulk
Tonally misjudged and (latterly) at odds with the hulk as we know and love him in the shared MCU. Watching now, 15 entries later, it feels non-canon. As a standalone, inspired by the 70s show, itās fine.
#3 - Iron Man 2
Probably [one of] the weakestĀ #mcuchallenge entries for me as it aims for ācoolā moments rather than developing character or overarching story. On the flipside, it introduces us to ScarJoās Black Widow
#4 - Thor
In no particular order: the direction of Branagh, the realisation of the Rainbow bridge, the triple H acting of Hemsworth, Hiddleston and Hopkins, the hilarious humour, the majesty of Mjolnir, the Shakespearean plot machinations; all are Thor-some!
#5 - Captain America: The First Avenger
I (too) was predisposed to preferring this origin above all Avengers due to my predilection for Captain America as a character, so the bar was set high. Johnson, the perfectly chosen director, exceeded it by making a boys own adventure replete with echoes of his Lucasfilm roots. Itās underrated in my opinion and should be considered as the Raiders of Phase One. Joe Johnson just *got* 1940s Adventure-era Cap. As too does Evans who only continues to get better with each subsequent appearance. I could watch Cap movies all dayā¦
#6 - Avengers Assemble
Still top 5 MCU of all-time. The Avengers characterisations are spot on in this initial assemblage; no mean feat considering the wealth of source material, the origins of Phase One and the balancing act of at least seven key roles. Come the epic Chitauri invasion finale and from the Avengers arc shot onwards thereās too many fist-pumping, geekgasm moments to mention; spine tingling each and every one of them.
#7 - Iron Man 3
As a fanboy of @BonafideBlackās buddy banter and noir stylings, Iām on board with his Iron Man entry (noir is an anagram of Iron after all) He write characters therefore it came as no surprise that his take delves beneath the suit to the mechanic that wears it. Iām aware Iām in the minority, but the first two donāt do much for me therefore this is like a shot of extremis to Shellheadās previously floundering solo entries. It still looks to be Starkās swansong and, if so, itās a fine way to finish IMO. Kiss Kiss Iron Man, if you will. The ābarrel of monkeysā scene is one of the stand out scenes from the entire MCU too.
#8 - Thor: The Dark World
The tone, palette and plot of this inferior sequel is arguably more aligned with the much maligned DC(E)U rather than the rightly-lauded MCU; make of that what you will. Iād gladly watch an anthology prequel about the Lord of the Aether battle glimpsed in the prologue thoughā¦
#9 - Captain America: The Winter Soldier
An espionage thriller every bit as good as the best Bourne or Bond has to offer, Captain America: The Winter Soldier just happens to have a few present and future Avengers at its centre. The undisputed leader of the Avengers as the 18-strong MCU currently stands, the more I revisit Captain America Super Soldier, the closer the film creeps towards my current cream of the big screen comic book crop, The Dark Knight.
#10 - Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy is better than any film about a half-Terran cross between Han Solo and Indiana Jones, a walking thesaurus, a talking tree, a green-skinned warrior woman and a bad-tempered raccoon has any right to be. Iāve lost count the number of times Iāve seen GotG already. Thereās so much to admire, so much Galaxy to explore. it bears repeat viewing. Every joke still lands. Every emotional beat pulls a heart string. Every character is worthy of fronting their own galactic adventure. We. Are. Groot.
#11 - Avengers: Age of Ultron
Thereās much to admire in this movie as Whedon ably juggles the ever-growing ensemble cast; each one gets their moment so, no matter who your favourite is, you should feel satisfied come the conclusion. The action scenes pay off with key moments that remain in the memory: the team line-up, āGo to sleep, go to sleepā, Black Widow on the bike, Hawkeye motivating Scarlet Witch and the arc shot around the Avengers as they end the threat of too many Ultrons. Quiet moments pay off too: the party is perfect (especially Thorās face as Cap moves Mjolnir), the interlude at ranch Barton is a top idea and the lull in the final fight manages to move; I even welled up a little as Cap and Widow debate their fate this watch. In short, itās endlessly rewatchable, as my SuperSon has put to the test.
#12 - Ant-Man
Easily the most underrated entry in the entirety of the MCU to date, Ant-Man is also, upon reflection, my favourite solo character origin story. Giant-sized words, I know!
#13 - Captain America: Civil War
War! What is it good for? Captain America movies!
I love Civil War. Itās edgy. It;s important. Itās epic! It truly feels like a āsuperhero comic book movieā ripped from the panelled page. And, Thor damn, the Russoās sure can shoot the shit (Sorry, Cap) out of an action scene. Speaking of scenes, thereās one in Fight Club when the Narrator and Tyler mock a Gucci advertisement, asking if itās what a real man look like. Itās not, no. What a real man looks like is Captain America holding a helicopter with one arm and a building with the other. Swoon.
I could watch this on repeat all day.Ā
#14 - Doctor Strange
Letās face it, Cumberbatch was the only choice for Strange, as suited to the hyper-intelligent, egotistical, socially-awkward auteur as Downey Jr was to Starkās genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist. By this point in the MCU, Marvel can do origin with ease as this return to formula proves. Whilst Doctor Strange does remind you of movies from before (Iron Man, Batman Begins, Inception, Matrix), it patches them together into a kaleidoscopic Frankenstein of its own making.
Oh, one more thing: it goes without saying how awesome Doctor Strangeās enchanted Cloak of Levitation is ā Iād argue itās the single best cinema companion since Gromit!
#15 - Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol Two
GotG amped up to 11, Vol. 2 is less a case of difficult second volume, more Gunn locked and loaded. GotG2 is deeper, richer and cleverer than itās predecessor, if not as instantly iconic nor anarchic in its punk rock aesthetics or impact. Ego, weāve all got to grow up sometime. Following the near perfection of the first Volume was always going to be a tricky proposition, but this sophomore space saga soars true enough and will surely, in time, serve as a solid central entry in a worthy Guardians of the Galaxy stand-alone trilogy.
#16 - Spider-Man: Homecoming
Did I need another resuited Spider-Man movie so soon after the last aborted attempt? I didnāt think so until I saw this coming-of-age comedy that referenced Ferris Bueller, BttF: Part II and The Breakfast Club (among others)
Did I need another iteration of Spider-Man and his teen geek alter-ego Peter Parker? I didnāt think so until I saw Tom Hollandās infectiously enthusiastic and ultimately incomparable portrayal of everyoneās favourite neighbourhood webslinging wannabe Avenger.
Did I need another potentially disappointing take on a classic Spider-Man villain? I didnāt think so until Michael Keatonās birdman soared above almost any other adapted antagonist from the entirety of comic canon ā not since Loki have I feared and cheered in equal measure.
Did I need another big screen Spider-Man blockbuster? I didnāt think so until I understood what this wall-crawlers direction was under the genius creative control of chief Watcher Feige within the winning MCU. Now I need more, for thwips sakeā¦
#17 - Thor Ragnarok
Space fantasy as its Flash(āahh ahā)iest, Ragnarok is: Thorsome, Hela good, Full of gloriously glib Loki asides, a Hulk load of fun, great Valkyrie for money! Third timeās the charm for the God of Thunder. I canāt TaikaWaititi to see the Revengers return in Infinity War!
#18 - Black Panther
Stunning Wakanda world building. Convincing and charismatic cast performances. Strong character motivations. Serious and meaningful underlying themes. Too much CGI. MCU continuity issues. Nowhere near enough Michael B Jordan. Good not great. Middling MCU Challenge entry for me.

Yuri on Ice Rewatch: Episode 1
Iāve been planning to do this for a while now, and since the one-year anniversary has come around, I figured now would be a convenient time to start this rewatch. I know I might be a day early on this, but I donāt think Iād have time tomorrow to do this, so Iād rather do it now and get it up a day early than get it up a day late.
Weāll see how this turns out, but I at least want to use this rewatch to discuss my own personal history with this show, how it affected me while it was coming out, what the fandom was like at the time, etc. So this will probably be less of a review or anything like that, and more of a trip down memory lane for me as I revisit this show. Basically this is just my way of getting out all my feelings on this show, so keep that in mind.
I only decided yesterday to start this now as part of the anniversary rather than doing it sometime next year before the movie comes out, so this first post might be a little messy and unorganized, but I should get the hang of it soon enough.
My plan at the moment is to rewatch one episode a week, on each of their respective anniversary dates, for the next few months. If I can manage that. After that, I might try and do a cohesive review of the show as a whole, and I might do a post about my speculation regarding the movie. Weāll see.
Iāll put the rest under a cut since everything after this point ended up being like 3.6k words long and I think I spent like three hours on it.
Before I properly sit down and rewatch episode one, I want to talk for a bit about my history with the show before it aired, what my expectations were, etc.
Iāve more or less been with this show from the very start. I remember seeing the initial teaser image of the logo, and all of the proper trailers as they came out. I didnāt really think much about the teaser image when it came out, since Iām not really a huge fan of sports anime in general, I didnāt really have an interest in figure skating in particular, and I didnāt know much of anything about Sayo Yamamoto as a director. Iām pretty sure that after the teaser image came out, I started hearing vague whispers about how amazing Yamamoto was, and how great her shows were, so I decided pretty early on that I was probably going to watch it, even though I didnāt have much to go on.
Right from the start we all pretty much assumed that the show was going to be about female figure skaters. Partly because Iām pretty sure the logo was pink the first time we sure it, partly because Yamamoto was most well-known for doing shows about women, and partly because it had the word āyuriā in the title. It was pretty obvious that that wasnāt actually what it meant, but damn if it didnāt stop people from making jokes about it. Though I guess it didnāt help that we also had Yuri Kuma Arashi from a few years before that did indeed use that exact meaning of the word in itās title.
Then a few months or so later the trailers started coming out, and we got a better idea of what the show was actually about. And let me just say that the āyaoi on iceā jokes stopped being funny the exact moment the first one was made. And they were definitely made immediately after the first trailer came out, way before the show even started.
At the time, the idea of it being about male figure skaters made me pretty immediately cautious, since sports anime has a pretty bad track record of shallow queerbaiting, and I didnāt really expect this show to be the one that finally delivered. It didnāt help that some of the scenes used in the trailers, like the lip-touching in episode three, didnāt quite come across well out of context.
I also want to take the time to mention that the season right before Yuri on Ice started, we had Battery: The Animation, which was basically like the polar opposite of YoI in terms of being a sports anime with a gay protagonist. It was just . . . not great. At all. It went a long way toward reaffirming my doubts about if the sports genre could ever do this sort of thing well, which made me even MORE apprehensive about YoI. I still have a bit of a grudge against it to this day, but it at least serves as a very convenient way for me to point out how ludicrous it is for anyone to act like any sports anime with a gay protagonist would be popular and successful, because that show sure as heck wasnāt. I should also point out that in the same season we had the Danganronpa 3 anime, and even though this is kinda sort of a spoiler, it had a pretty . . . depressing and not great depiction of a gay male character, so that was like a one-two punch of me getting pessimistic about the chances of ever getting good and happy gay rep out of the anime industry.
Either way, even in spite of that, the animation quality and the music from the trailers alone were enough to win me over and make me want to give it a try, even if I was bracing myself for disappointment.
Also, even though I donāt think I ended up watching it until way later, I highly recommend that any Yuri on Ice fans check out Endless Night, which was Sayo Yamamotoās Animator Expo short film from a year or two ago. You can really tell how she was regaining her enthusiasm as a director by going all in on her love for figure skating. In hindsight itās pretty interesting to consider that she probably did Endless Night when she had already begun working on Yuri on Ice as a concept and shopping it around. For the record, she also went on to do the opening sequence of Persona 5, which is another example of her putting her love of figure skating into her work.
Anyway I should probably actually sit down and watch the episode itself before I spend an hour on this whole beginning section alone. I think Iāll keep making these beginning sections for each post before I sit down and watch the episode itself, but theyāll hopefully be less lengthy than this one.
---
OK let me just say first of all that I spent pretty much the entire episode choking up, and I was basically on the verge of tears during the entire ED sequence. I knew that rewatching this would be an emotional experience for me.
Itās kinda difficult to even put into words how much Yuri on Ice means to me as an individual, especially since Iād like to stick mostly to talking about this first episode alone. But Iāll at least say that it is undeniably the most personally meaningful piece of media Iāve ever encountered. It means the world to me. Before it aired, I had pretty much become resigned to the idea that, at least within the anime industry, the best representation I was going to get was some variation of the Bury Your Gays trope. Iāll probably get more into this later down the line, but I donāt think I even consciously realized exactly how much I needed something like this, since even outside of anime Iād never really experienced a story like this. And even when I started watching it, the full effect and realization of how meaningful it was to me was a gradual process that kept building up and up as the show continued to surpass my expectations, more or less culminating in episode ten.
Which is part of why I like the opening monologue of this episode on multiple levels. It obviously refers specifically to Yuriās sense of unending surprise toward Viktor as a person [which obviously gains more and more context and weight as the show goes on], but it also matches the way that the show itself was an unending series of surprises for us as the audience. We had no idea what to expect from it, and it kept getting better and better.
Itās probably not even worth noting at this point that this rewatch series is going to mostly be focused on the romantic sub-plot in the show, because thatās the part I love the most. Obviously I love the entire show and all of itās facets, but still. I guess my main point here is more that I wonāt be talking that much about the sports aspect specifically, for the most part, since I have less of an interest in sports in general, and Iām not particularly well-versed in how figure skating works so Iād feel hesitant to talk about it much. I have immense respect and love for all of the people in the fandom who ARE actually into figure skating, though, either as fans or as athletes. Their insight into the show has been an invaluable resource for me. I might not be much of a sports fan in general, but having a greater understanding of how it works, by listening to what other people have been saying since the show started, has definitely added to my overall appreciation for the show as a whole.
Also, somewhat ironically, this is one of the episodes with the least to talk about romance-wise since Yuri and Viktor have like thirty seconds of shared screen-time in it, so Iām probably going to spend most of this post talking about other stuff. Mostly.
To start with, I love the animation and art across the show as a whole, but I think we can all agree that episode one is the peak in terms of animation quality. Not that the other episodes are badly animated in any real way, just that this episode really hits it out the park with some stunning sequences. Thereās some wonderful bits of character animation in this episode, like Minakoās ballet move when she meets Yuri at the airport, or the cut of Hiroko running up to meet Yuri at the innās entrance, or Yuko being all bouncy and energetic. Not to mention really well-done close-up shots like the bathroom scene with Yuri and Yurio. I really like the heavily shaded and sharp style used in that scene.Ā
But of course, the real stand-out piece of animation in this episode was definitely the joint Stammi Vicino performance, which is still one of my favourite scenes in the show. Itās incredibly well done. Itās a bit sad that none of the skating animation after this episode quite matches it, aside from maybe Welcome to the Madness, but Iām pretty sure that this sequence in this episode took several months to animate on itās own, so I canāt exactly blame them for not keeping this level of quality once we started getting like five or six performances an episode.
One of the things that I remember surprising me the most about the show at first was how dynamic, energetic, fast-paced, and feel-good it was. With how relatively somber and slow the trailers were, and with the vague whispers Iād heard of Sayo Yamamoto being a cult classic director, I kinda got it into my head that the show would have a more . . . low-key atmosphere and sense of pacing than it actually did. Iām not sure how to describe it. In general I tend to think of obscure cult classic directors as the kinds of people who make things that are slow, psychological, moody, probably depressing, etc etc. So I was not at all expecting something as vibrant and fun and full of personality as what we got in this. I still think that the relentlessly feel-good vibe of the show is a huge reason why it struck so well with people. It doesnāt really get mentioned a lot, but it can be a surprisingly difficult concept to describe, at least in a way more detailed than just saying āfun things are funā.
I also want to give a shout-out to the background art of the show, which is fantastic across the board for the entire show. Iām never really good at articulating my praise for stuff like this, but still. I think the show would have looked a lot different, and a lot worse, if it had more generic background art. Especially in terms of colour palette and shading and whatnot.
To this day, I still deeply appreciate the fact that this is a story about adult athletes who are high up in their respective field, and are struggling with adult problems. It helps to set it apart so much from most sports anime out there. Of course, even this sort of concept could be handled badly by a lesser production team, but you get what I mean. Itās a breath of fresh air. And, along the same lines, I also love that itās clearly aimed at a more adult audience than a lot of other anime in general. Itās easy to not really think about it, because we kinda associate things āaimed at an adult audienceā with things that have lots of nudity or violence, but I think the idea still applies here. And even if itās not handled quite the same as what weād think of as ādepictions of adult sexuality in televisionā, thereās still a whole lot of sexiness going on in this show.
Just to lay it out there, I honestly think that Yuri is one of my favourite fictional characters of all time, if not my absolute favourite. I have so many strong feelings about him. Heās absolutely wonderful. His entire character arc and personal journey is one of the most inspirational things Iāve seen in my life. And for a lot of reasons I just see a lot of myself in him, even though weāre very different people.
I donāt know where else to say this, so I guess Iāll just say here that it was his development and journey that inspired me to get into drawing, which Iād been putting off for years because I didnāt think Iād be good at it or enjoy it enough. I havenāt exactly done the best job at keeping up with it as a hobby, but over the last ten months or so Iāve nearly completed one sketchbook, so thatās something! Iāve only posted one drawing of mine thus far, but I plan to post more as time goes on. Probably mostly stuff to do with my OCs. I definitely want to do some proper Yuri on Ice fan art though in the future and post it here, and Iām still kinda sad I didnāt get any done by today, but Iāve been too busy lately to work on it, and I didnāt want to rush something out just to meet a certain important date. Iāll try and post some by the time Iāve done this rewatch, though.
Of course, thatās not the only thing this show has helped me with, on a personal level. Iāll probably get more into this over the rest of the rewatch, especially at the end, but this show really has become an emotional support for me. Itās helped me through a lot of dark places. I donāt know where Iād be without it.
One thing I want to get into is how incredibly different this episode feels in hindsight, now that I know what happens later. Iāve already rewatched it once, so itās not a big surprise or anything, but still. The scenes with Viktor in particular feel very different when you know who he is as a person. When you know that heās just a lonely, dissatisfied dude who wants to feel love and passion. The Stammi Vicino scene in particular is even more depressing and emotional when you understand that itās basically a cry for help.
The fandom hypes up the episode ten twist and how it recontextualizes the entire show, and it really, REALLY does. It makes everything feel way different when you understand that Yuri was the one who asked Viktor to be his coach, and that he was the one who first enthralled Viktor by giving him a glimpse at a possible path to revitalizing his love of skating, and finding true, genuine love along the way. Of course Yuri was already enthralled by Viktor as an idolized god figure of sorts before that, but you get what I mean. The banquet was basically the first time they properly met as individuals. But I wonāt go too deeply into the banquet scene just yet. Iāll save that for the episode ten post.
[Also I should probably admit that I still canāt quite remember if the banquet happens before or after the ācommemorative photoā scene. I know I should have the exact timeline of events there memorized, but itās kinda foggy]
Itās also sorta interesting to look at Yurioās whole attitude in hindsight, knowing that he always secretly admired Yuri and was angry at him because he knew he had so much potential and strength within him. But honestly, just to be blunt, I still donāt really care that much about Yurioās character in general so this part is kinda vastly overshadowed by, uh, everything else, lol. I donāt really dislike Yurio or anything, I just think that heās the least compelling or interesting of the major characters.
Before I get into shifting focus toward what the general audience reaction to this episode was, I should probably comment on the OP and ED a bit, since I havenāt yet. Personally I adore both of them. Theyāre wonderful. I still think that History Maker is one of the more iconic and memorable anime OP songs out there, and it never ceases to make me emotional. I still wish that the actual art and animation for the OP was more . . . interesting, though. The animation style is really good, but it suffers from a lot of noticeable recycling of animation, and the backgrounds are pretty flat and empty, although I still like the splashes of colour done at the start. Iām not entirely sure how Iād suggest improving the OP visually aside from doing it completely differently, though. But there are other Sayo Yamamoto OPs I prefer visually to this one. Like the more recent Kakegurui OP. I donāt really know if that OPās style would have fit Yuri on Ice, but still. Even with my slight gripes about the visuals, I really canāt overstate how much I adore the song itself.
The ED is also really nice. It gets kinda overshadowed by the OP, but itās still good on itās own. The Instagram style is really effective and feels fresh and modern. The song itself is rather good, but not quite as memorable as History Maker. The real strong point of the ED is definitely the visual side of things. Other than the aforementioned Instagram style, I really love the images used. The assorted pictures of all the various skaters are nice, and help set up their characters pretty well, but the best part is definitely the fun, domestic scenes between Yuri and Viktor that are interspersed throughout the ED. Theyāre absolutely fantastic, and theyāre the main reason why I have a desperate need for an entire OVA purely consisting of those sorts of scenes. Iām still internally screaming over how the scenes of them playing at the beach and them playing under the fountain were meant to be actual scenes, but were cut for time. Iād love to see what those scenes would have been like. Even the glimpses we got are wonderful, especially with how they help paint a broad picture of how happy and fun their daily lives were together, and how close they got over the course of the show. Especially after episode four or so. It just kills me in the best way possible, to think that stuff like them playing at the beach and being casually touchy-feely and just being happy and joyful was probably a completely normal daily thing for them. Not to mention the other little moments we see, like that one shot of Yuri smiling with his eyes closed while Viktorās sitting behind him, combing his hair. Itās such a perfectly domestic and casually intimate little moment. It melts my heart every time I look at it. The more I think back on the entire show in hindsight, the more it rings true that Yuri really is the only one who gets to see Viktorās hidden cute side. Considering that we see basically the entire show from Yuriās POV, itās easy to forget that basically everything about how Viktor acts around him is very different to how he is with other people.
Also I just wanna quickly say that the showās soundtrack is fantastic. Both the background music and the skating songs. Though the skating songs are a bit more punchy and memorable. Just hearing Stammi Vicino still makes me tear up a bit.
Anyway, now I should probably touch a bit on the wider audience reaction to this episode. I wonāt really have a lot to say on this end of things for this entire rewatch, since itās kinda difficult to dig up the stuff people were saying a year ago, but still.
The most convenient links I can find to reactions are the Anime News Network Preview Guide post about the first episode, and the Reddit discussion thread for episode one.
The main point I want to make with this is that everyone pretty much immediately loved the show, and most people pretty much agreed that it was the best premiere of the Fall 2016 season. Which I agree with. Itās probably one of the best first episodes Iāve seen out of all the anime Iāve watched.
Though itās also sorta amusing in hindsight to see peopleās reactions to the homoeroticism and whatnot, and everyoneās apprehensions about how itāll go in the long run. That is, just ācause at this point we know where it goes, and that it fully commits to itself. I donāt think anyone watching episode one expected that weād end the show referring to Yuri and Viktor as fiances/husbands with no trace of irony or wishful thinking.
Anyway I should cut this short because itās like 2am and my brain is gonna melt soon if I keep writing so yeah letās just stop for now.
As I said before, Iām gonna try and get one episode/post done per week, so Iāll try and get my Episode 2 post out around this same time next week. I expect that most of the rest of these posts will be a whole lot shorter than this one, though, since thereās so much stuff I wanted to say right off the bat that I probably wonāt need to go over again later. Some of these posts might actually be pretty short, depending on how much I can find to say about some of the more skating-dense episodes. Weāll see. Iāll try and at least stick to this schedule.
#murasaki rambles#yuri on ice#I was hoping to get some fan art done and posted today but that didn't work out#I'll try and get some done eventually#I hope I can stick to doing this for the next three months#it'll be a bit of a commitment#but I'm happy to finally have a good excuse to go crazy with gushing about my feelings about this show <3

Asking this because of that top notch Michi rec post you made: Top 5 Michi Fics.
Oh, thank you so much! Iām really pleased to hear youliked my Michi rec post. ā” (*Here* it is for those who want to check it out.)
To be honest, itās really not easy to make a top fiveof Michi fics for two reasons: 1. I love way more than five Michi fics and itādbe difficult to rank them. 2. Iāve been reading Michi fics ever since 2004.Granted I havenāt read every single one of them. And there are so many stories that I really, really loved but have been deleted in that twelve year time span. (Iām going to include those anyways, though.)
Letās give it a tryā¦
Iād first like to discuss a few Michi stories I reallylike that just didnāt make the cut to my top five, but still deserve a special mention:
āThin LinesĀ byHemseeĀ Apparently this got deleted? I only found out about this yesterday, because I started checking the links on my Michi masterpost, but evidently itās been deleted instead. Which is unfortunate because I was really eager to know how the relationship between Taichi and Mimi would further develop. Plus, Hemsee really has a clean, beautiful writing style that is so wonderful to read. I hope she creates a new multi-chaptered Michi story, though.Ā
ā All Good ThingsĀ by Hemsee Luckily, her Michi oneshot is still there. It tells the story of how Mimi and Taichiās relationship developed throughout the years since their childhood and how they gradually fell in love and got together.Ā
ā anchor me back downĀ by dianaagronSimilarly to āAll Good Thingsā, this story follows their relationship from the very beginning, since kindergarten, in a wonderful will they/wonāt they-kind of way, to their mid-twenties. While I do love both stories (what can I say, Iām a major sucker for slow-burns), I do prefer ambd over agt. Plus how can anyone dislike a story inspired by that beautiful song by Mindy Gledhill?
ā Snow by hello heartbreak I recently re-read this story and loved it just as much as I did ten years ago. Ngl it hurts seeing my beloved Chosen in such pain, but this story is so touching. I also believe this is the fic that generated my headcanon that Mimi would have trouble transferring back to Japan and have trouble speaking/studying the language. Lo and behold, ten years later that headcanon actually came true in tri!Ā
ā ButtonsĀ by BenignUserĀ This story is just so adorable! It makes me melt every time I read it. (I believe Iāve read this oneshot five times. What is my life, haha?) But really, itās so fun, so cute and definitely worth your while.Ā
ā keep it classyĀ by hellyeahayumichan This is a collection of four (slightly nsfw) drabbles for Michi, Sorato, Takari and Kenyako. Itās just such a great read! I really admire the subtle descriptions. Hellyeahayumichan has such a way with words. (And even though itās not fic, I highly, highly recommend checking out her Michi art! Each and every one of her drawings are amazing. I envy her colouring skills in particular.)
ā Parallels by Scripturiens There are no words to describe how amazing this artwork is. And I stress the word art, because itās really an interesting exercise in writing by putting the different pieces out of order so that all the nuances of the thoughts and the actions of the characters come together with such care. Amazing structure aside, itās a nice piece that so wonderfully conveys emotion, especially heartbreak. I love it so much, and now I want to go re-read itā¦.
ā Whispers at nightĀ by ribbonedcuriosaĀ To this day Iām still so happy I requested a Digimon story set in the Star Wars universe from ribbonedcuriosa, because she took it and fabricated this lovely ficlet. She merged both franchises so fluently, itās inspiring. The Michi is subtle here, but I love subtle implied pairings when it comes to the adventure genre. I honestly crave more of this story. Forever crossing my fingers for a continuation.
After contemplating long and hard over it, I now present you my TOP FIVE MICHI STORIES:
05Ā āWhat Women WantĀ by StarlillyWe start of with one of the most popular Michi fics on FF.net. And thatās understandable, because this story is so much fun! I believe I started reading it not long, just a couple of months, after it was completed. Iām even planning on re-reading after finals, so my little review here is based on my memory of when I read it late 2005.Ā
First there is something I have to confess (again, Iām sure Iāve stated this before, but just to be clear Iāll state it once more) that I donāt really like it when authors use the dubbed names in fics. I prefer reading Taichi Yagami over Tai Kamiya, very much so. I didnāt like it back when I started reading Michi fics in 2004/2005 and I still donāt now. That said, I wonāt turn a fic down because the author chose to use the dubbed names. I do like to give it at least a try. (I sound so picky nowā¦) And in this case: I loved theĀ āWhat Women Wantā film back then (still do, I rewatched it this year), so there was no way I wouldnāt read a Michi fic based on that film. And honestly, Starlilly took the premise and really made it her own while developing the relationship between Taichi and Mimi so well.Ā
04Ā ā Fallingās not the problem by ribbonedcuriosaAhhhh, this story is so good! I was eagerly awaiting the next part to beta each time because itās just so good. I absolutely love how curiosa jumped back and forth from past to present to showcase how Mimi and Taichi got to the point where they were in the beginning and how their lives further developed since then. And she did it so fluidly. Also her characterizations of both Taichi and Mimi are so well-done.Ā
03 āCome to MeĀ by Pied Piper + Only AliveĀ by Pied PiperIām sure you all knew beforehand that at least one Pied Piper story would make my top five, and hereās the first oneā¦ Sorry, first two. Okay, I know Iām cheating here by putting both these stories on the number three slot and therefore havenāt whittled my list down to five fics but six. But for the life of me, I can not chose between these two!Ā
Iāll talk about Come to Me first. I really love this story so much because itās so real, so relatable. There were so many moments where I just nodded understandingly, because it was so realistic. And I talked before how I love slow-burns, well, this fic is one of the ultimate slow-burns Iāve ever read. I really enjoyed reading about their journey from how they became friends first to actually falling for each other, but being apprehensive first considering they were still dealing with their heartbreak from a previous relationship, to finally arriving at their destination together which felt so earned. It was so beautiful beyond comprehension. (PS: I still have a half-finished fanart of it lying around.)
Moving onto Only Alive nowā¦ Iām confident my good friend Sunny is going to love the fact that I included this fic into my top three. Back in the beginning of 2009 when we discovered our mutual passion for digimon as well for Michi through a meme on my livejournal (we befriended over Avatar first), she told me that this was her most favourite Michi story. Somehow I hadnāt read it then yet. (Seriously, what was wrong with me?) So, at her recommendation, I read the first chapter and I immediately wrote back to her that I was in love with this story already. There was a certain passage in the first chapter that stood out to me, because it was the perfect Michi interaction:
So he asked her to dinner, sending a written apology note down to her small cubicle several stories below his feet.
She replied almost instantly: Jackass.Ā
He responded: Pick you up at eight?Ā
She agreed: Buy me flowers, too.Ā
Ah, Mimi, Mimi. How he missed someone who could talk back without fear. Welcome home, he grinned to himself.
To me, Michi is so compatible, because their personalities just go well together. Theyāre both headstrong but theyāre both also very passionate and kind. I love seeing them portrayed with the whole ālove to tease youā dynamic. And that passage in OA is an excellent example of that. Honestly, Pied Piper has such an exquisite grasp on these characters. I knew then that this fic was going to be splendid, and boy, did it deliver! I read it in the course of three evenings.
I will forever love both these stories. Then again I will forever love all the stories Pied Piper wrote. Just thinking about them makes me want to re-read every single one of them (except that I sadly lost a couple over the yearsā¦)Ā
02 āĀ Creative License by R.vdPIām kind of cheating again, haha, because technically this wasnāt really Michi. Daikeru, a ship I love so much next to Michi (thanks to this fic actually), was the main pairing of this story, but Michi was definitely heavily featured. But I just loved this story so much! Unfortunately it was deleted several years ago. (Around 2007, iirc.)Ā
That being said, I still feel lucky to have read this story. I canāt begin to explain how amazing it was! It was so cleverly constructed. Each chapter focused on a certain aspect of the story, and with each chapter we learned more and more what happened to these characters in the past and how theyāre ultimately connected to other characters. It was all intricately interwoven. The writing style was also so crisp, so poetic, so inspiring. Plus, while the Michi was very angsty, it was very hot. I still havenāt read a nsfw Michi that came close to their scenes in this story.Ā
01 āĀ My Captainās Lady by Pied PiperIs there any surprise that MCL is my ultimate favourite?Ā
The truth is: This isnāt just my favourite Michi fic. This isnāt even just my favourite Digimon fic. This is my ultimate favourite fic ever.
It was the very first fic that got me so hooked. I started reading MCL after chapter fifteen or so (donāt remember the exact chapter anymore, since yāknow, it was eleven years ago) and kept checking for the next update. It was really bad with the final chapter, because it was New Yearās Eve and I continuously pressed refresh so eagerly awaiting the update and then when it was finally there I read it between the different courses of dinner.Ā
I loved it so much that I was raving about it non-stop to my best friend that she, who hadnāt watched a single episode of digimon, even wanted to read it. So I lend her my binder of MCL and I like that she texted me her thoughts a few times. I kept those texts, even after ten years, until I had to buy a new phone last summer.Ā
Sentimental experiences aside, the story itself is just so epic. It had everything: an intriguing plot, an amazing build-up, lots of suspense and action, and of course a compelling romance between Taichi and Mimi. Once again, the journey of the characters and their relationship was so moving and so captivating. And I loved every step of the way.Ā
#digimon#michi#taichi x mimi#mimi tachikawa#taichi yagami#my rec post#anon#inbox#meme me up scotty#you can expect an update of the michi rec post soon though :D#i'm checking to see if all the links still work#and adding so much michi greatness that was produced in 2016#i hope 2017 will be as amazing a year as 2016 was for michi#(lbr 2016 sucked except for all the michi goodness)#also dear nonnie#i'm so sorry this came so late#but it wasn't easy formulating a top five for michi fics#i wanted to take my time#but it was so much fun talking about my favourite michi stories!!#so thank you so much for this ask :)

Projection Room: The Smit Awards 2018
What a year itās been. YouTube channels got ripped apart, launched and ripped apart even more, Disney actually closed the Fox deal, life at two cinemas has become the norm, superhero films have dominated the box office, and for a change Hollywood has had less scandal than it usually does... hang on, I sense a Gunn has been fired somewhere.Ā
As ever, here on TheJackSmit.com, we end every year with our satirical awards that honour the best and worst of the last 12 months. Itās our way of looking back at a year where 66 films got reviewed in-cinema, a new strand of screening was conquered, and I got to witness actual film production for the first time. So, letās just get on with it. Welcome to this yearās edition of the Smit Awards.
Before we beginā¦
Time for the usual rules and regulations of these elusive honours. There are none, except for the main Film of the Year- that has to have been screened on a British cinema screen (whether itās previews, Screen Unseen or general release) between January 1st and December 23rd, and the important bit: if it was nominated for any of the major Hollywood awards back in February, itās of no interest here. So, here we go, and be warned, there are potential spoilers ahead.
DIRECTION
Bart Layton, American Animals
This guy worked wonders on this film. After making a few documentaries in the past, his first true feature film blended the worlds of fact and fiction incredibly well, and stylistically, this film just worked on so many levels. I really wanted to give this award to a fresh filmmaker, and for Layton, he did his thing at the right time.
PERFORMANCES
Lead: Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody and Viola Davis, Widows
These set of awards were difficult. And as usual, because of the way distribution works, I canāt go with the big films yet- so these two are the strongest performances in my eyes. Malek was able to become Freddie Mercury pretty damn well, and for Viola Davis, she is able to pull off quite a complex role and make it her own.
Support: Timothee Chalamet, Beautiful Boy and Claire Foy, First Man
Again, itās been difficult to pick these awards. Chalamet continues his blistering rise into Hollywoodās elite with his work on Felix Van Groeningenās adaptation of Beautiful Boy (and that performance arguably saved the film, believe me), and with Foyās performance in First Man- a film which has been looked down upon by cinemagoers, it is subtle, nuanced and very thoughtfully worked out.
Ensemble: Bad Times at the El Royale
I canāt not give this film some love- when myself and film production guru Ed Greenberg seen this one back in October, we were rather taken back by the quality of the entire cast- so it felt like the natural choice for this yearās Ensemble award.
SCREENPLAYS
Original: Bad Times at the El Royale
And speaking of the El Royale, Drew Goddardās script really did make that film come alive- we all know how good his films have been, and this one is no exception, every character has their own narrative, and it is balanced so well that even the mighty Ed Greenberg (who I have worked with more than ever for this blog over the last year) was impressed with it. And me and him are not easy to impress.Ā
Adapted: Black Panther
Hail to the king. Ryan Coogler added a whole new take on the superhero genre with his work on Marvelās February release this year, and his script with Joe Robert Cole felt refreshing. This may be the big award it scoops at the Oscars, and considering the success of this film, it is fully deserved if it wins the big one.
CINEMATOGRAPHY
First Man
You canāt really argue with the work of Linus Sandgren nowadays... unless itās on films like Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Just the sheer scale of that landing sequence in First Man was enough to convince me for this award- but obviously shooting it for IMAX is the real reason that cinematography worked.
Traditionally weād deliver an award for Visual Effects in this bit. But because the standard this year has been so good, picking one filmĀ wouldnāt do any justice. So hereās the best of the best.
AQUAMAN
AVENGERS INFINITY WAR
READY PLAYER ONE
MARY POPPINS RETURNS
All of these films had some top quality CG, and like I say, picking one sole winner would be too difficult.
MUSIC
ORIGINAL SCORE: Daniel Pemberton, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
This guy has had an absolute killer few years. Steve Jobs, The Man from U.N.C.L.E, Mollyās Game, Oceanās 8, and now his masterwork- not bad for a guy who once upon a time wrote the title music for Peep Show. Watch the film first, then listen to that score again- because it fits the action perfectly.
SOUNDTRACK ALBUM: A Star is Born
Obviously. The impact this film has had in the charts kind of warrants this particular award, and potentially that Oscar for Best Original Song too.
WTF MOMENT OF THE YEAR (THE I SMELL BULLSMIT AWARD)
The entire film, Sorry To Bother You
Anybody whoās seen this film will know exactly what I mean when I say that the ending was literally unexpected. But seriously though, Sorry To Bother You is the most surreal thing Iāve seen in a cinema screen, and thatās saying something.
TURKEY OF THE YEAR
Awarded to the film that disappoints audiences and critics alike
There were so many contenders for this award in 2018. But there could only be one.
SHOW DOGS
Angry. Disappointed. Regular readers will know that those are the most scathing words I can bestow upon a film, and in this case, those are the most suitable.
In a year where weāve had Venom, The Happytime Murders, Patrick, Nutcracker and The Four Realms as well as Robin Hood, none of them could compare with the mediocrity of Raja Gosnellās Show Dogs. It truly was horrific. And thatās before I mention the infamousĀ āzen placeā joke.
THE āMYSTERY FILM NIGHTā AWARD
Awarded to the most surprising Screen Unseen film of the last 12 months
AMERICAN ANIMALS
I am honestly surprised that this film didnāt open wider than it did- because it was a film that really came out of nowhere. It was bold and unique, especially considering the true nature of the story, and quite honestly, seek this film out when itās released on DVD- because itās unlike any heist film youāve ever seen.
OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM
WIDOWS
Itās been a rocky road for this film at the box office, but Widows was another masterclass from Steve McQueen, one that qualifies for this honour through its link with Film4- itās Oceanās 8, but way more serious, brooding, and itās a much better take on the female heist movie.
BEST ANIMATED FILM
SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE
This was a real surprise considering that we finally got The Incredibles 2 this year- but seriously, Spider-Verse really delivered upon the goods, and broke Sonyās curse of making some pretty mediocre superhero films. It has some brilliant comic-inspired animation, a perfect script, and so much more.
THEJACKSMIT.COM FILM OF THE YEAR 2018
The big one. Which film will follow Dunkirk, Arrival, Brooklyn and others into the history books? It has been an incredibly difficult decision, but the 2018 Film of the Year is...
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT
youtube
Now, because of the way the awards films are released, we havenāt had the proper contenders like The Favourite or Green Book here in the UK yet, which is a real shame. But in terms of what Chris McQuarrie did with Mission 6, there isnāt much to fault. Everything about this film was incredibly well thought out, and even with a slight injury to Tom Cruise, the film got finished on time, and it delivered upon the hype. I rewatched it earlier this week during the final deliberations, and it is just hard to believe that this is a 2 and a half hour film.
2019: Back to Basics
And that just about does it for 2018 here on the blog- but as youāve seen in Decemberās Journal and our little rebrand last week, thereās a few changes on the horizon. Guest writers, merch, podcasts, and 100% less bias to any cinema chain will become the norm over the next 12 months. And readers, you are a key part of it all. Keep your eyes peeled on the blog over the next few weeks for further announcements, because this is a bold new era for TheJackSmit.com. An era where we are all #BornIndependent.
