Review Everything 36 - Pompo the Cinephile:
This is exactly the kind of earnest, goofy, almost nonsense, love of the medium stuff I go to anime for.
Pompo is about an editor turned director [who still has to edit his movie] and gives you a fantastical look into what directing a movie for the first time would be like if your writer/producer gave you pretty much everything you'd need to complete your script. The animation is beautiful, with the scenes shot for the movie within a movie being particularly notable. I kept thinking, when we got to see clips of the movie, that the weight the characters were animated with was more realistic than you see in most animated things, let alone in anime. It provided a really nice contrast to when the floaty, giant half a scissors wielding editing sequences and less "realistic" reactions from the director to the actors doing their thing.
Also this shouldn't be notable, but I appreciate that the mysteriously aged but little girl coded Pompo was never sexualized in the movie.
In Summary: If you'd consider yourself a cinephile and an anime fan, give it a watch. It pulls some shenanigans, but nothing all that notable for the genre.
Overall: 8/10

lola!! i watched uptown girls a couple of days ago & i just had to tell u because ur reblogs of the the movie inspired me to watch it :) so here's my mini review for u: i enjoyed it & liked that the romance was just a subplot while the friendship between ray & molly was the main focus. inter-generational friendships are so important &, as this movie shows, can teach u a lot! i'm going to start babysitting again in the fall & watching this got me excited for that, so thanks for indirectly recommending it <3
this makes me so happy im glad you enjoyed it!! personally i think the romance is my least fav part but evrything else is so life changing 2 me.. i have a soft spot for movies about being kind to your inner child & reconnecting with her while also being able to move on and enjoy your current life for what it is i think this one does it so beautifully idk everything about it is so magical to me!! good luck with the babysitting <333333

SPHERE (1998) Michael Crichton
There is no discussion on the characters of the actors, first rate. The script based on a book by Michael Crichton of the same name as the movie, impeccable, well, if we are looking for flaws and everyone is a connoisseur, what can go fucking wrong, THE CRITICS. Kaikeyi. By Vaishnavi Patel. Red Hook, 2022.
Rating: 3.5/5 stars
Genre: fantasy
Series: NA
Summary: “I was born on the full moon under an auspicious constellation, the holiest of positions—much good it did me.”
So begins Kaikeyi’s story. The only daughter of the kingdom of Kekaya, she is raised on tales about the might and benevolence of the gods: how they churned the vast ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, how they vanquish evil and ensure the land of Bharat prospers, and how they offer powerful boons to the worthy. Yet she watches as her father unceremoniously banishes her mother, listens as her own worth is reduced to the marriage alliance she can secure. And when she calls upon the gods for help, they never seem to hear.
Desperate for independence, she turns to the texts she once read with her mother and discovers a magic that is hers alone. With it, Kaikeyi transforms herself from an overlooked princess into a warrior, diplomat, and most favored queen.
But as the evil from her childhood stories threatens the cosmic order, the path she has forged clashes with the destiny the gods have chosen for her family. And Kaikeyi must decide if resistance is worth the destruction it will wreak—and what legacy she intends to leave behind.
***Full review below.***
Content Warnings: violence, sexism
Overview: This book has been on my TBR since last year, and I finally got my hands on a used copy. The premise is very intriguing; though I'm not familiar with the Ramayana, I do love a good mythical retelling, so I had high hopes for this book. On the whole, I did enjoy my reading experience, though there were some things that did prevent me from loving the story. My primary criticisms have to do with pacing and narrative, so for those reasons, this book gets 3.5 stars from me.
Writing: Patel's prose is fairly run of the mill for your typical first person POV young adult/new adult fantasy. This doesn't mean it's bad - in fact, the prose is very clear, flows well, and balances showing and telling in a way that I found effective. But it does mean that there's not much about the style itself that sets it apart from other authors. Some readers may like that; it's easy to sink into the story, and if you're not a fan of lyrical prose, you might get along great with this book.
But my main criticism has less to do with the sentence-level craft and more with the overall pacing and structure. Much of this book feels slow while big, important events feel a bit rushed or randomly inserted (to the point where the last 200 pages feel like the meat of the book but have the least amount of time and attention). I'm not sure if the answer is to cut anything from the narrative because I can see how Patel was laying a lot of groundwork. But I also think Patel could have focused more on building up the narrative threads that mattered most so the last 200 pages felt like more of a culmination.
Plot: The plot of this book follows the life of Kaikeyi, a warrior queen who is a significant character in the Ramayana. According to the Author's Note, Patel wrote this book as a way to imagine what Kaikeyi's motivations might have been for exiling her stepson in the Ramayana, so this novel is technically a mythical or epic retelling.
I haven't read the Ramayana, so whether or not this story is a faithful or insightful is beyond the scope of my expertise. I will thus only comment on what things did and did not work for me as a reader with no background knowledge. I encourage you to seek out reviews from Indian (especially Hindu) readers if you wish to know more.
Personally, I wavered back and forth between being fully engaged and being a little bored. Reagrding the things I liked: I really liked the last 200 or so pages when Kaikeyi is forced to make a heartbreaking decision. The emotional turmoil of seeing evrything Kaikeyi worked for over decades being brought down because of forces beyond her control was incredibly gut-wrenching, and l thought it was thematically a good parallel to the story at the beginning of the book (which emphasized how men will punish women for their own actions).
What didn't quite work for me was the mixed messaging on feminism and how it fit in with the premise of the book. Patel seems to be trying for a feminist reimagining of the Ramayana, and while I can respect that, I also think it was unclear what readers were supposed to take away from the story. At times, I thought Patel was criticising the masculine lust for war and the way women are blamed for male violence. At other times, it seemed like criticism was levied at the patriarchal religious leaders. Still, at others, I got the impression that the criticism was of the idea of epic heroism and holy war. By the end of the book, it seemed like we were supposed to be happy for the small improvements to women's lives completely separate from the court (and if so, why focus on the court at all?). This is not to say that I think the "message" of the story should have been plainly spelled out or that it can't manifest in multiple ways. But I do think Patel was trying to do too much, so any message that may have been intended feels surface-level.
Still, I think Patel does a good job of creating complex character relationships that add interesting dimensions to her story. I loved that Kaikeyi and her brother Yudhajit were close and yet Yudhajit had biases that made him unable to see the damage that patriarchy can do. I also liked the respect and partnership that formed between Kaikeyi and her husband Dasharath, and the sisterhood between Kaikeyi and Dasharath's other wives was refreshing. I even enjoyed the complexity of Kaikeyi's relationship with Rama and how she viewed him as a son who she loves dearly and also a threat to the well being of the kingdom. These character relationships, in my opinion, made the narrative more interesting and multifaceted.
I also quite enjoyed the magic of the Binding Plane and how it was used as a visual metaphor for things like the strength of a relationship and influence. Granted, I do think Patel relies on it sometimes as a shortcut for describing the nature of relationships, but I did like it as a motif that exists throughout the story and turns the idea of the "manipulative woman" into something more interesting.
Characters: There are quite a few characters in this book so I'm only going to focus on a few to keep my review a reasonable length.
Kaikeyi, our POV character and protagonist, is admirable for the way she fights for the betterment of women throughout her kingdom. I really liked that over time, she let go of a lot of internalized misogyny and went from avoiding being "too much of a girl" to recognizing different ways women can participate in society. I also really liked her complex relationship with the people around her and with the gods, and I admired her strength when making tough decisions. My only criticisms of Kaikeyi are that I kind of wish she hadn't been portrayed as almost single-handedly inventing feminism and I wish we had gotten more scenes of her using the Binding Plane to influence people on her husband's behalf.
Speaking of Dasharath, I liked that he was open-minded to the idea of a woman serving on his council and that he was also aware that attitudes can't be changed overnight. He seemed like a reasonable ruler to me, which made his eventual fate all the more devastating.
Dasharath's other two wives, Kaushalya and Sumitra, were a pleasant surprise in that I thought there might be some jealousy or competition between them. However, they turned out to be a formidable team and great support system for both the women of the kingdom and for each other, and I liked the easy way they all got along.
I also liked the sons and the sibling dynamics between Rama and his three brothers. I think Patel did a good job of writing Rama as this divine being who obviously has a good purpose but who also falls prey to the sexist treachings of "traditional" tutors. It made him somewhat sympathetic and fallible, but because he also had great love for his brothers and for Kaikeyi, it was hard to dislike him entirely.
I do think, however, that Patel could have done more with Manthara. Manthara is Kaikeyi's servant who has been with Kaikeyi her whole life, and she acts as something of a confidante and mentor. Personally, I felt that we were told of Manthara's importance more than we were shown, so it felt like Manthara was less instrumental in Kaikeyi's story than perhaps she should have been.
I'm also not entirely sure how I feel about Ravana. Ravana is a half-demonic raja from a faraway kingdom, and every time we see him, he is sympathetic and kind. The reason I'm not sure about my feelings regarding his character is we're told towards the end of the story that Rama has gone to confront Ravana, and I'm not sure if we're meant to see this as a good thing. Because Ravana is a demon, I at first though Patel was trying to make a point about not judging people by their bloodlines, but once Rama got involved, I wasn't so sure if this was the correct takeaway. Maybe it's more complex because the Hindu Ravana is complex, but I'm not really in a position to judge.
TL;DR: Kaikeyi is an ambitious reimagining of a classical Hindu epic that seeks to put women at the center of the narrative. While the story could have been a bit more focused and the overall themes a bit more concrete, Kaikeyi is a compelling tale that is sure to delight fans of mythological retellings.

Gah I'm having a tough anxiety day today re: job
I know every little thing is not a fireable offense but I can't help my mind going directly to that place any time something goes wrong
#we got some bad reviews on Yelp and some of them are like#I don't know what to do about this because it's a one off#but others I know what I could have done but now I can't go back and change the past#I can only move forward#but that thought doesn't always mitigate the feeling#that it's all over I'm gonna be fired for this#my last job gave me that feeling all the time and it's hard to let go of it#and what makes it worse is that I love this job#I love it so much and I feel so much better all the time re stress#and I don't want to lose that feeling#also the fact that it's showing me I can't ge Reid of anxiety by changing jobs#and even tho that's a true and normal statement my mind was like#latching onto EVRYTHING WILL GET BETTER NOW that I've changed jobs#and to have that proven wrong is just...#upsetting I guess

this is a pretty silly thing to wonder (especially considerint EVRYTHING about this show) but the show title being 1899 now feels weird after the ending. Like, are they still gonna call it 1899 despite it, well, NOT set in 1899??
On another note- I can't wait to see what the intro for the next season will be like
sorry i meant to answer this earlier but the more i thought about it the more i was like ???? do i really have anything smart to say??
anyway i cant promise i have anything smart to say, but yea, i get that. i personally am an absolute slut for period piece horror, so im definitely in the camp that's a little disappointed by the prospect of a space expedition story next season, but im sure it'll be great fun in different ways (if that does in fact end up being the main setting)
i do hope that the 1899 setting (and the character work they set up using it,) remain important to the story going forward rather than just an entry point. I've seen the assumption from some reactions/reviews that essentially *all* of the Season 1 character stuff is now fake and irrelevant, but i find that to be rather hasty. we don't really have any way of knowing whether 2099 is any more real than 1899 or what significance each layer will play to the final story, so! yea! hopefully by the end that title still feels thematic!
OOOOO tho i do wonder if they'll change the intro sequence -- seems like they'd have to but also ???
also, has anyone clocked who the face is at the end of the intro? the one the ship is parting through? like am i just face blind? i have no fucking clue who that's supposed to be

I want to write an essay about the little that I know about Owen Lars, aka Luke's father, but for now I'm just so glad because he and Beru did evrything in their power to give Luke a happy and normal childhood, which is what's made Luke the sweetheart we know him to be. Just seeing ten year old Luke, ďoing exactly what a ten year old should be doing and seeing Owen in a face off against an Inquisitor, when he cannot even compare to her powers, only reconfirms that the two did everything in their power to keep him safe, which I hope offered Obi-Wan some comfort.

Have the wisest man in that fictional world, tell others that your are the kindest and the smartest person he has ever met. Have the evil guy fall for you and revoke his evil ways cuz youre just that hot. Allow yourself to be loved by the fictional characters you look up to and in time you may also begin see how wonderful you really are.

Ok, here it is. This is one of my all time favorite interviews. It doesn’t really contain anything new, and I am still convinced it has been translated before, but that is beside the point. He is so chatty, and I get the impression he was quite at ease with the interviewer, and he’s just and adorable dork. I gave up on trying to capture his “voice” pretty fast because it’s impossible. Maybe it’s because I know how he sounds when he speaks english, but he’s ... a bit of a hazard, in that he sounds dumb one minute and sophisticated the next, and some of the things he says are actually not translateable, so I just concentrated on trying to get what he says across and gave up on the how.
Interview with Richard Kruspe of Emigrate and Rammstein
by Marcus Schleutermann of Rock Hard Magazine, August 22, 2008
—-
Richard, where and in what kind of circumstances did you grow up?
Until I was seven I lived in a small village called Weisen. That was a beautiful childhood with alot of nature, cats and dogs and a big family with two siblings. Then the big break came unfortunately, with the divorce of my parents. My father was gone from one day to the next, and we moved in with my stepfather in Schwerin. We didn’t ge on at all. The situation between me and him escalated quite a bit and I often ran away from home quite often. Sometimes I slept on park benches or in a friend’s basement and was looked for by the police. When there was the chance to start an apprenticeship somewehre else I jumped on it right away and went to Hagenau. Since there was nothing there other than a big army base, I did nothing but spend two and a half years worth of sparetime playing guitar. Looking back, I have to say that my stepfather at least taught me basic discipline. I profit from that by now, because as a musician there is no outside obligation to sit down and compose every day.
Where would you most like to live?
At the moment, I live both in Berlin and in New York. I like that duality. New York has a unique energy that drives me. I never really warmed up to Berlin on the other hand. When I first came here, the negative attitude of the people here totally spooked me. It’s always a no at first. Apart from that it’s pretty cold here. But by now quite a few things have changed for the better, especially this refreshing multiculti-thing, which of course doesn't only work between germans and turks, but between all sorts of nationalities. I would most like to live in Cape Town. You have the mountains on one side and two oceans on the other. The people are open and friendly and there is a very beautiful light that is good for my mind. (I feel obligated to say that he uses the word «Gemüt» which could also mean mood or soul and kind of means all of those 3 things at once.) I can imagine that as a retirement retreat.
Were you more of nerd or a bruiser in school?
I think that goes without saying - quite a bit of a bruiser.
So you did end up in brawls now and then.
Certainly. At the age of 10 to 14 I got into situations all the time where I - lets say - could let loose physically. But when I started wrestling I learned how to chanel my aggressions. I trained 5 times a weekand had competitions on the weekends. Unfortunately I was way too offensive most of the time and had no patience while fighting. I wanted victory right away, like tyson.
Are your parents proud and of you?
I think my biological father is very proud of me. My mother always wanted something else for me, but by now my muscian’s life is okay for her. At the end of the day it doesn't matter what you do, as long as you are successful. Especially for the post-war generation of my parents materialistic value is still held above evrything.
So what does money mean to you?
Essentially, only the freedom to be able to do what I like to do. Money means independency to me most of all. The problem with that is of course that you get used to a certain level of luxury and lifestyle. When I earned the first bit of money with Rammstein I was in seventh heaven and thought I would never need more. With my two apartments in London and Berlin and the constant travelling I need a bit more nowadays.
How do you define success?
Success is relative. With Emigrate I got great reviews, sold a good number of albums worldwide and got releases in America and Australia. Therefore, I could assess my solo project as a success, but in comparison with Rammstein, who sell millions, Emigrate are small fry.
What was the most miserable job you ever had?
The worst job was window cleaner, because I suffer from vertigo a bit [laughs]. Initially I was a truckdriver, but I lost my license after an accident. After that the company deemed I was supposed to become a window cleaner and climb up the Schwerin television tower. No way! I just put up the ladder for them and told them: See you later! (He actually uses english for the see you later. More impactful, you see.) To get by, I made shoes myself and sold them. Espardrilles and the likes. That is funny, because I am actually not talented in crafts at all. But I am streetwise and inventive when it comes to survival. I always had to improvise to get by because I couldn't handle authority at all. As a teenager I apprenticed to be a cook/chef (Same word in german. Probably more a cook than a chef to be honest here.) That's a tough job going off the tough hours alone. Apart from that it gets quite hot by the stove after a while.
That is not that different with Rammstein’s pyro show.
Quite true, hahaha! I believe cooking and making music has so much in common anyway. I have always cooked without a recipe. I just take what is there and conjure up something delicious. Some things maybe don't fit that well in the beginning, but you learn that quite quickly and then you develop an intuitive sense. That is the same with composing.
What would have become of you, if you hadn’t become a musician?
Hm, good question. I would like to produce a band some time - so kinda switch to the other side. Other than that I love to write and could imagine screenwriting would be a suitable job for me.
Speaking of Hollywood, how about being before the camera? Are there characters you would have loved or love to play?
Two characters I find brilliant: Taxi Driver and Leon the Professional. And those gangster flicks are cool. Goodfellas and Reservoir Dogs for exemple.
So more the underdogs and the villains - not the heroes.
Yes, they just have more potential. After I shot some erotic scenes for a video the other day I could also imagine doing an entire film in that direction. I was quite nervous in the beginning, but the longer we were shooting the more fun I had. Erotic, mind you, not pornographic.
So, you’d undress for Playgirl?
Not anymore [laughs]. Although probably not before either. I do have a pretty easy going relationship with my body and run around naked in my apartment alot, but then I am not that exhibitionistic that I'd strip for some glossy magazine.
So you’re a at-home nudist.
Yeah, that's an east thing, I think. When I opened my apartment door in New York naked once when the door rang while I was in bed with my then wife, she was completely bewildered. The shameless ossis (east germans) and the prudish americans - that was a meeting of the worlds. [laughs]
Are you vain?
Unfortunately, yes. I'd like to be more above that because vanity is a negative quality that has something to do with insecurity and ego. I work on myself and as I got older I luckily developed a more casual attitude. At some point you start to accept the degredation of the body.
Theoretically you could counteract that with plastic surgery. How about an appointment with Nip/Tuck, hm?
That's not something for me, but I don't have anything against plastic surgery. If people are unhappy with their body and gain new self esteem and sense of life through an operation, they should go through with it. I do see a problem in the danger of it getting exorbitant and to develop some kind of addiction like with tattoos that goes far beyond the reasonable. The body won't go along with everythig after all, and such things as calf implants are pretty crazy.
Speaking of crazy, what’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
That must have been asking a woman to marry me two days after meeting her. She said yes, and the rest is history. (They are divorced at this point, as the article points out here - in brackets too.)
Cue: Woman: What type do you prefer?
Like almost everyone I do have some sort of type. You need a relationship that mirrors yourself and to develop. So in that sense you're looking for a partner that drives you forward in certain aspects. To have a good relationship you need to keep a balance of passion and friendship - if it's just one it will overturn at some point.
What do you think of groupies?
They just belong to it all. This symbiosis of star and groupie is like theater. The relationship between both has of course nothing to do with reality, and is just an illusion, but you shouldn't destroy that. I'm personally not really tempted by groupies because I like it when I have to fight for a woman. But I like the glamour their presence emenates.
Do you believe in god or reincarnation? Are you spiritaully inclined?
More and more. I don't believe in god in a church sense, but I'm a spiritual guy and believe in a form of justice; that the things we do come back to us in some way eventually. Karma, so to speak. I also have the slightly feminine habit of using astrology to understand people. I use it as a tool to decipher characters. Once you know how someone's house is build, it's easier to place their actions. To be clear: I don't mean horoscopes or such nonsense. There's alot of maths in astrology and you can't compare that with the usual star-sign pulp in TV programmes.
Could you live without television?
Nah. I have a huge beamer in my New York apartment's bedroom. I love lying in bed, smoking and watching good movies more than anything. That is the only thing where I can really switch of other than sex. Lots of both, please. [laughs]
Reading isn't your thing?
I used to read alot, but now I'm unfortunately too lazy for it most of the time. Even on the plane you get a monitor and a huge selection of movies since a while now. But I still have a good reading recommendation: The New York trilogy by Paul Auster.
What's the most important invention for human kind?
Each century has it's own big invention and right now that is clearly the internet. Before that it was electricity, which made everything else like the light bulb and the elctric guitar even possible.
To which era would you most like to travel if there was a time machine?
I guess the sword and blade time as I always call it. Knights templar, 11th century. I can answer that this well, because I like to watch even stupid movies when they deal with that period. I just have a huge affinity to it somehow and would love to find out how things were going back then.
Do you have a phobia?
Other than the aforementioned fear of heights I have a phobia of snakes.
When did you cry the last time?
Now you got me. That is a huge problem of mine because I just can't cry. I think that is a pity myself, because crying is an outlet with which you let grief go. Maybe that's why my music is so important to me, it's like my tear duct and helps me to live out my feelings.

Yup, just ditched tumblr for two whole weeks and decided to come back with Boruto 54 review but I fall asleep early and now evrything I thought of writing already be written by someone else. Should have gone with the queue post but I was so sleepy last night and I am afraid my interpretation from the leaks might be way off (which it does not).
