reverse unpop opin meme: b-movies (construed as broadly as you would like)
i love b films, they're so gnarly and messy and short and FUNNY, they're HILARIOUS. at 2022 noir city chicago they programmed an entire day long marathon of b noir and when i tell you that was the most fun i've ever had at the movies. i'm starting to watch more b westerns too, and they're just as silly and fun. they get a reputation for being "lesser" because of the context by which they existed in the first place (the shorter film to go on the second half of the double feature, the shorter schlockier film to couple with your maltese falcons, your double indemnities, etc.) but i think they deserve to be given their flowers - they were an exercise in creativity and they're imperfect but FUN.
some b noir i really enjoy: fly-by-night (i watched this at the tcm film festival a few years ago and it RULES), high tide, the spiritualist (seen at last year's noir city chicago - this one rules too), dr. broadway (i love this film so fucking much lol), detour (like, THE b noir to ever b noir), and night editor (women with icepicks >>>>)

Reverse inpopular opinion: I love Ryuk for being an unique villian whose only motivation is entertainment. Not sadism(this sets him apart ftom, say, Joker), not misanthropy(quite opposite), just pure desire to have fun(well, and apples). Yes, very simple motivation, but bounces off really well with the complex motivations of his human buddy Light.
I adore Ryuk and tbh, without Ryuk, I wouldn’t even go here. My introduction to the entire DN franchise was Noteflix (ugh) but I liked RYUK enough in that to give the anime and manga a chance. I fell in love with Light and L after that, but Ryuk was the first hook tugging me into obsession.
He’s just so FUN and what better companion for Light on his adventures in godhood than an actual god? Their dynamic is almost as captivating to me as Light and L’s. Light who wants to clean up the world vs Ryuk who is content to let his decay. Light who kills out of desire to shape human morality vs Ryuk who kills for the equivalent of a meal. Light who is willing to endure personal loss and suffering for his plans vs Ryuk who’s only here for the lulz. They are similar in many ways, too. Both are eternally bored, socially removed from their peers, like to take risks, enjoy dramatics, have a lot of patience, keep their own best interests in mind, looking for a reason to feel alive. Ryuk’s the only one who has the ability or perspective to view Light as he really is from Day 1. I can’t even see him as a villain since, by shinigami morals, he’s just doing what he’s supposed to be doing by following the rules of his kind. But I too love that he’s not come to earth out of malice or to purposefully torment humans— he’s here on vacation and wants to live it up.

What We Do in the Shadows?
The biggest most precious gift that WWDITS FX has given me is a fat leading character who's sexy and funny and badass. Guillermo is a vision.
The second most big precious gift that WWDITS FX has given me is Doll Nadja.
Tumblr media
I find Nick Kroll really sexy so I like that WWDITS FX has surprise inexplicable Nick Kroll.
The needle drops on both the documentary film and the TV series are absolutely incredible, to the point where they're regular playlist adds for me as they appear.
I really like both houses' different approaches to their film crews and their diverging dynamics/samplings of vampire types -- if we only had the film that would still be huge but I am forever grateful to the series for giving us Colin Robinson.

Hi! Light Yagami for the Popular Opinion ask game?
JFC well I could go on and on and ON. I’ve answered why he’s my favorite before so since I’m lazy I’ll include that here and here. I ramble even more about why I love him here! But big reasons I find him iconic and fascinating are the layers of his ideology, his convoluted thinking about martyrdom, the tragedy of never being honest with anyone including himself, the importance of his family (esp his father) to him, and his subversion of the femme fatale trope.

Reverse Unpopular Opinion meme: Obata's art is gorgeous! I'd read a lot of scanlated manga before finding the Death Note scans but Death Note was the first manga I bought the official volumes for because wow, 2000's era jpegs did not do that art justice. Most of our fine and good manga artists out there rely on exaggerated costumes and hairstyles to make their art pop but Obata's drawing a dozen adult men in staid suits and making them compelling to look at. Hands down still my favourite mangaka
Obata’s art is immaculately beautiful and he’s so talented it floors me the few times I’ve gotten to watch him draw on video. Death Note was the first manga I ever read, which set the art bar so high that all other mangas I’ve looked at have felt nearly...amateurish in comparison? Some of that might be his realistic art style vs the more exaggerated anime-ish style other mangaka use (I prefer the former), but nothing in manga I’ve seen compares to me. It probably exists but I think I’d always still have that ‘wow’ factor with Obata’s work. Like you said, he has a talent for making the mundane interesting, but his ability to represent movement in static images, as well as fascinating facial expressions and the arrangement of scene components, is impressive to me. He can draw monsters equally well as humans (seems to prefer doing the former IMO!) So much of the charm and mystique of Death Note is because of his art, the character and costume designs he was given creative freedom to make. I can’t imagine the manga would have been as popular without it.

for the reverse unpopular opinion, i just wanna ramble about how i love light yagami so much like- sometimes i dont even know why bcs i mostly can't relate or agree with him. i was kinda shocked when i saw people actually don't like him very much while i'm here, rooting for all his kira moves. he's such a great character it intrigues me to no end. oh and he's absolutely stunning but we all know that
Coming with the facts anon. I felt like it might be shallow of me to ramble about how gorgeous he is [I WAS IN MY HEAD OK] but I blame Obata and all his lovely art for that hahah. Also why oh why was I blessed cursed with a love of unrepentant gorgeous smug asshole characters with delusions of grandeur??? Idk but I do and nothing can be done. But besides all that I don’t agree with the stuff Light does I just immensely enjoy watching it and picking his lovely flawed mind apart for fun. There’s plenty of ppl on here that like his character if the folks that hang around this blog are any indication, cause they have to know by now what they’re gonna get here lol. There’s haters too but we don’t have to judge them for their bad taste. We’re not Kira after all ;)

I am asking about: Sports.
SPORTS WOMEN ARE THEE MOST BEAUTIFUL IN THE WORLD
I am excited every single time I see something happen in a sports game, it could be any kind of athletic endeavor, if I can notice something with my naked eye I will scream and whoop and hop up and down
O U T F I T S
it's very kind of many sports teams to include vividly colored distinctive outfits so I can tell who is who
There are commentators who will tell you what the fuck is going on and I think that's really great
Even many men's sports players are nice to look upon and I like that
There are several sports that you can play either WHILE drinking a beer or shortly BEFORE getting a beer and I think that's a really great time.
I love sports that have esoteric drama which is low-stakes in terms of human toll (we're talking "players are pissed off at each other"/"it's against the spirit of the game", nobody getting hurt) but extremely high stakes in terms of people's sheer attitude.
In all seriousness there are some athletic endeavors that require so much cooperation, trust, and power to produce the impression of effortless grace and I really admire that.

Sweet Smell of Success for the ask meme? Or The Servant?
WHAT CAN I POSSIBLY SAY ABOUT SSOS
The dialogue is so memorably spicy that literally everybody else writing pithy neo noir shit wishes they were her tbh
It's very cool to get a look at show business drama that is explicitly not based around Hollywood, and it means I get to have fun picturing all the kinds of behind the scenes Broadway drama that J.J. is just frowning about behind closed doors.
Not a single person in this movie looks good, the outfits are just totally forgettable, and it still manages to look so stylish.
Every shot in this movie smells like cigarette smoke and paper matches and it gives me such palpable pleasure.
This film feels like the strongest "men suck" thesis statement in a genre that is rich in movies where men suck.
Have you seen Falco's eyes lately... the man's got eyelashes for days.
Susie is going to write an incredible confessional memoir the moment J.J. kicks the bucket and I want to read it.
I know there's a musical version but I haven't heard or seen it so it's just a gorgeous fantasy to me.
