Will you ever elaborate on how simon obtained doll like how you did john and darling, love your writing btw💗💗💗
Thanks for reaching out! I'm glad you like my work <33 I can't see him having enough social niceties to do anything other than to snatch doll up. He wouldn't be charming enough to get them in the car or to convince them to go home with him so it would have to be by force. Here's a little 2k blurb of Ghost bringing Doll home. cw: stalking, abduction, physical assault
Ghost and Doll Meet
Part of the Doll and Darling series. This is a dark series so mind the tags.
Tumblr media
You'd like to say that you did something stupid to get yourself into this predicament. That you got into the wrong car or went home with the wrong person from the bar. Or even that you ran your mouth in front of the wrong audience.
It wasn't true though. You didn't do anything.
He would eventually tell you about the first time he saw you. You were walking out of a corner store, juggling your spoils as you reached for a ringing phone. He'd run out of cigarettes and happened to see you as you were leaving. It was a chance encounter that had your paths crossing. Chance that ruined your life.
The first time you saw him was from your living room window, standing across the street.
All you could really make out was the size of him, a solid black mass that seemed to draw in the surrounding light like a black hole. He was massive and covered from head to toe in dark fabric, not an inch of skin to be seen.
You jerked to a stop on your way past, staring into the deepening shadows trying to make the figure out. It was a fruitless endeavor so you did the only thing that seemed logical in the moment.
You closed the curtains and continued on with your night, paying no further mind to the peeping Tom that wanted to look into your home.
You considered the matter a done deal until you saw him again days later, this time leaning against the tailgate of an old truck as he smoked a cigarette.
It was fully dark this time and you were coming out of the grocery store when you noticed him. You would've glanced right over his hulking shape if the cherry red end didn't light up with his inhale. A brief glow that allowed just enough light to see that something was there.
Was he following you?
Maybe it wasn't even the same person. No need to jump to conclusions based solely on someone's size. He might just be waiting on a friend.
But then why was he staring at you?
His head turned to follow you as you continued along your way. That was fine, sometimes people stared, it wasn't the end of the world. No reason to panic.
You cursed the fact that this store was close enough to walk to. You'd packed up your reusable bags and now you were stuck hoofing it home. It was going to be okay though, you were going to get home safely and lock the door and everything would be just fine.
You refused to look behind you when you heard what might have been a scruff of a shoe against the concrete or might have been the bush of the tree branch against the side of a building. Either way you were almost there and it didn't concern you.
Your hands were shaking by the time you reached home and tried to get your key into the lock. It scraped at the opening a few times before finally catching, allowing you to unlock it and push the door open to quickly get inside. Slamming the door shut behind you, you leaned back and tried to catch your breath. Your heartbeat pounded away in your chest and your hands were still trembling.
But you were inside. You were safe. Nothing was going to happen to you.
It took an hour and a healthy glass of wine before you finally stopped shaking.
It was a week later that he was back across the street again.
You'd found yourself compulsively checking out the windows every time you had to cross them. A constant source of stress as you wondered if this would be the time you saw him again. After the first few days of nothing you began to relax, content to reassure yourself you had blown things a mite out of proportion.
That went out the window when you saw his shadow once more stood across the street, placed to have a direct view into your house.
Why was this happening? What did he want? You slammed the curtains shut so forcefully you heard stitches pop, fabric swinging madly where it had just been abruptly closed. You'd speak to the police tomorrow.
The police wouldn't do anything when you went to see them the next day. You'd begged for them to help but without anything more substantial than 'seeing a scary looking man hanging around' they said their hands were tied.
It was such a load of bullshit.
You stormed out of the building fuming. Sitting down with a huff at the bus stop you felt your phone vibrate in your pocket. Pulling it out with a frown you were greeted with a blocked number texting you. A simple sentence that sent chills down your spine.
Better luck next time, Doll.
What the fuck? How did he get your number? Was he watching you even now? You surreptitiously looked around, attempting to find him. You hadn't come across him in the daylight before. You'd foolishly thought yourself safe to go to the station since it wasn't even noon yet. Stupid stupid stupid.
You shoved your phone into your pocket with a worried frown. What were you going to do now?
It went on like this for a month, catching glimpses of him when you leave stores or work, standing in shadowed alcoves that you glanced over until a cigarette lit up, drawing your eye. Your curtains stayed permanently closed now, blocking the view into your house but also keeping you from seeing what was outside the window. The uncertainty of it was almost worse.
When a sound woke you in the middle of the night you knew what you were going to find before you opened your eyes.
Still, you couldn't help the involuntary choice your body made to pry your sleep-sticky eyes open, immediately zeroing in on the man standing beside your bed. It didn't even take a thought before you were opening your mouth to scream, the endeavor cut off before it started as he muffled it in his palm.
You kicked your arms and legs out but caught under the blankets as you were they didn't do much damage, just tangled you up further, tightening your noose. You got your teeth around a portion of glove covered finger and bit as hard as you could, your jaw aching with the pressure you exerted.
It was the last thing you remembered as you glimpsed a fist making its way towards your temple in the dark.
Waking up, your head throbbed. Just turning to see a bit more of the room you were in left your vision swimming and nausea swirling in your gut. A whimper crawled its way out of your mouth as you took deep, steadying breaths trying to recenter yourself.
It was minutes later before you were able to pry your eyes open again, squinting against the meager light of the bare light bulb as it stabbed through your skull. What greeted you was a cold, empty room.
Concrete floor and walls, nothing present except yourself and the thin mattress you were laying on. It looked like an unfinished basement or cellar with no windows and a set of rough wooden stairs leading up to the next level. The bare bulb you'd noticed before the only light source, dangling from a thin cord in the middle of the room.
Moving to curl your knees to your chest you were met with a loud clinking as pressure increased around one ankle and you realized that you were chained to a post in the middle of the room. A leather cuff wrapped snugly just above your bare foot.
You laid there and stared at it, mind shying away from the truth even when it was right in front of you. If you ignored it then it would go away, right? You'd close your eyes and when you opened them again you'd be back in your own bed, snuggled in your thick blankets, soft pillows surrounding you.
There's no way you'd actually been kidnapped by a stupid stalker. You knew it didn't only happen in Lifetime movies but you still never expected to have it happen to you. As much as you tried to fight it, you could feel your panic rising in your chest, choking out your lungs.
What was going to happen to you?
Were you going to be killed immediately? Your body taken out to the side of the highway and dumped like trash? Would anyone be able to identify you or would you be a Jane Doe for the rest of eternity? A name that wasn't your own attached to you for all of time.
Or would you be kept instead? Forced to stay in this dank room subjected to the whims of your captor. What would he do to you? What would he make you do? Would your friends and family ever stop looking for you? Would they post your missing poster to their social media every year around this time? Or try to move on with their lives?
Was one scenario better than the other?
Your mind was spiraling when you finally noticed someone in the far corner. Letting out a small scream of fear you jerked back sending radiating waves of pain down your back and through your skull. Your muscles spasming as your vision swam in and out of focus. You tried to keep your eyes on the dark mass but your spinning vision meant you had to clench them shut, anything to stop the horrible vertigo.
It was a man. The same one that grabbed you from bed you were pretty sure. Everything had happened in a rush but it was hard to forget someone that large. He was completely covered in dark clothes, obscuring all but the general shape of him.
It made him feel less human.
"What," you croaked, fighting back nausea, "what do you want? Why did you take me?"
You focused on your kernel of anger to keep from breaking down into tears. Anything to ward off the oncoming panic you could feel building. You'd never been much of a crier but you found your eyes prickling easily now. A tingle in the back of your nose, tiny little bites of a needle.
He didn't say anything, continuing to loom in the corner. A dark spot you were already coming to equate with fear and pain. As you forced yourself to focus you realized he wasn't so much looming as he was sitting, splayed comfortably in a chair—watching you.
"You're the stalker, right?" you tried, angling for a response—any response. "The one I've been seeing around? Finally got bored with watching and decided to do something about it?" Anger. Hold onto the anger.
Silence.
"Hey!" you croaked, trying still for bravado, "what, are you ignoring me? Why am I here?"
He continued to sit there quietly, through all the abuse you hurled. A silent sentinel that never reacted no matter what you thought of to throw at him, your vocabulary growing more colorful as time passed.
Your voice was hoarse and raspy by the time he deigned to respond.
When he stood, you fell silent. All your earlier bluster draining away with a single movement. Was he larger than you remembered? He was certainly scarier, having shown he wasn't afraid to assault you to get what he wanted. Remembering it made your head throb anew, the radiating ache pushing back to the forefront of your mind now that you had acknowledged it.
His boots thumped, echoing with each step like a drumbeat inside you. Each thump bringing him closer, your fate steadily encroaching. You didn't want this, you were sorry for the things you said, you didn't mean them, please don't, you babbled, anything to stop what was coming. This impending disaster you could see building with no way to brace for.
You were barely breathing by the time he stopped beside your mattress, crouching down to reach out with one glove covered palm. You flinched away, back pressed to the wall with nowhere else to go when his fingers trailed down your cheek. Pulling back he showed you the sheen of your tears on the well-worn leather. When had you started crying?
"We're gonna get along just fine, doll," he cooed condescendingly, his voice rumbling bass deep. "You an' me? S'gonna be one for the history books."

Bucky Drops His Groceries
Yes- this was directly inspired by the TikToks of Sebastian Stan dropping his groceries. I couldn't get this idea out of my head and I had to write it. 800 words
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bucky was not having a good day. He had stubbed his toe earlier, Sam would not stop with his unrelenting teasing, and his shoulder was aching. On top of that, Steve was hosting a small get-together with the Avengers and Bucky was stuck playing host for the evening. He jumped at the chance to escape the chaos back at home and volunteered to go to the grocery store to get some last minute forgotten items. The store further sullied his mood as it was crowded and he was stuck behind a Karen who insisted on a price match despite it being against store policy. He also was recognized as the Winter Soldier/an Avenger by quite a few people adding to his annoyance. Normally, he can blend in with the crowd and go unnoticed amongst everyone else but today was the exception. His hoodie and beanie combo were not cutting it as he spotted the paparazzi as he exited the grocery store. A sigh escaped him as he pretended not to notice the lone camera man. Determined to give as little of a show as possible so hopefully the camera man would get bored, he maintained a stoic almost bored expression. He pushed the cart loaded with bags of groceries to his car.
Eager to return home and out of the public eye as soon as possible, he began to haphazardly load the groceries into the vehicle. As he grabbed the two bags, one in each hand, he accidentally used a little too much strength and tore the thin paper bag in his metal hand. This sent the bag crashing down to the pavement below him right on his foot. Bucky felt his blood boil as pain from the bag of apples slamming on his foot shot through him. He maintained his composure until he felt warm liquid seeping through his shoe and onto his sock. It took everything in him not to crash out. He dropped the lobster bisque which cost fifteen dollars and was a special request from Steve. He surveyed the damage of orange liquid splattered on the ground below him and several apples scattered at his feet. The one saving grace was he was wearing black shoes. He made a “what the fuck” gesture with his hands before he remembered there was a witness to the scene. Sighing, he grabbed another bag and clenched it tightly in fist as he practiced a breathing exercise. He quickly, but carefully, finished loading the groceries into the car.
Bucky reached into his pocket and pulled out a napkin. He wiped his shoe with the napkin and then put the napkin into his pocket. He grabbed a spare reusable bag from the trunk of his car and transferred the apples and the other items in the ripped bag into the new one. As he did this, he debated on going back inside for more soup before quickly ridding himself of that idea. Steve would survive without his soup. He then loaded the last bag into the car and closed the trunk. He picked up the torn bag, placed it in the cart, and pushed the cart to the cart corral. He threw the bag and dirty napkin in the trash before returning to his car. He quickly left the parking lot of the store as fast as legally possible. A sigh of relief escaped him as the lone paparazzi was left standing in the parking lot and he had some peace.
Bucky returned to his and Steve’s shared apartment where the other Avengers were waiting. Upon entering with the groceries (he did not learn from earlier and took all the bags in one go- no bags broke!) everyone turned to stare at him. Bucky pretended not to notice the smirks and teasing smiles. He assumed it was due to his shoe being covered in soup. As he began to put the groceries away, Sam approached Bucky with a smirk.
“I’m not in the mood, Sam.”, Bucky stated before Sam could speak.
“Is it because you dropped the groceries?”, Sam asked with faux innocence.
“What? How do you know about that?”
Sam pulled out his phone and showed him a TikTok of Bucky dropping the groceries. A wide grin spread across Sam’s face as he watched Bucky’s expression become more and more distraught as the video went on. Bucky looked up to see Steve, Natasha, and Thor staring at him with amused expressions. Bucky clenched his fists and the egg carton he was holding in his (non metal) hand became completely crushed causing his hand to be covered by gooey, yellow liquid. Sam burst out laughing. Bucky put the eggs down and walked to his bedroom ignoring Steve calling out after him. Alone in his room, Bucky crashed out.
can you do a pt 2 to my "slow living" rec but this time it's about reader jarring/canning, pickling, freezing, or drying literally everything? probably mid-summer when everything is overwhelmingly abundant and wife!sev is just in awe of the work reader gets done lol (also just wanted to say i absolutely adored what you with my request! it was so cute! you really are a blessing for the gays starved a sevika content)
yes yes yes yes yes! i haven't stopped thinking about this prompt since u sent the first request in!
men and minors dni
bushels and bushels of herbs, garlic, and corn are hanging from the rafters of the screened-in wrap-around porch of your home.
it's summer, which means you've been busy as a bee trying to tend to, harvest, and preserve all your garden's abundance. you're blessed to be able to sustain yourselves all year from the food you grow, but that doesn't mean it doesn't come without some elbow grease.
cicadas and crickets are singing outside as the sun begins to set, bathing your property in sparkling gold light. in the kitchen, with all the windows open and the fan whirring, a radio is singing and sevika is sipping on her nightly glass of whiskey.
you're dancing to and fro in front of her, chopping produce and throwing it in jars of vinegar, pressure canning the jams you'd made this morning, filling reusable bag after bag with chopped veggies and fruits that will go into the deep freeze until winter.
sevika's been busy too. experimenting with making goat cheese, fermenting wine in your basement, tinkering away at your broken AC all day. now, she's finally got a moment to rest, and she's using her free time to admire you.
you've got a filthy apron wrapped around your body, covered in stains and crumbs. right now, you're chopping squash and stringing it on a fishline, so you can hang it to sundry tomorrow. your hips are swaying to the beat of the gentle music, and you've got a glob of apricot jam on your forehead. sevika chuckles.
"what?" you ask her from across the counter. she grins.
"you're so amazing." she says. you smile.
"you say that every summer." you tease. sevika shrugs.
"doesn't make it any less true." she says. you chuckle.
"stir that pot on the stove for me?" you ask, gesturing to the giant pot of simmering tomato sauce you've got over a low flame. sevika nods and follows your command, licking the wooden spoon once she's done stirring and groaning.
"delicious, baby." she grunts. you giggle.
"it's your recipe." you say. she smiles.
"yeah, but you made it." she says. you giggle and swat her with the towel over your shoulder.
"did you finish grinding the cornflour?" you ask. she nods.
"and the wheat." she says. you sigh and wrap her up into a hug that she quickly reciprocates.
"you're the best." you say. sevika chuckles.
"you just married me for my muscles." she teases. you laugh against her.
"i can't lie, that was a pretty big motivator for me." you say. sevika giggles and reaches up to wipe the jam off your face, licking it off her fingers when she's done. you laugh.
"can't decide if i like summer or winter more. this is fun, and i love the long days and sitting out in the garden with you, but i also like winter. cuddling by the fireplace and bein' all cozy with you." she says. you press a kiss to her lips.
"i like spring." you say. sevika smiles, already knowing your reasoning. "'s when we got married." you say. she smirks.
"and when we met." she reminds you. you laugh.
"and when we first got the ducks." you add on. sevika snorts and rolls her eyes.
"fuckin' ducks. did i tell ya ms. quacker shit on me this morning? not even my shoes. she flew up to perch on my shoulder and took a duce all the way down my back." she says with a shudder. you giggle and kiss the frown off her face.
"i love you." you hum against her lips. sevika smiles.
"i love you too, baby." she says.
I do enjoy wrapping Christmas presents in theory, but just thinking about what a waste of paper that is (if you're not using like, old newspapers as wrapping paper) kinda kills me inside, because I have Stupid Hangups about Minor Things
So, using some old fabric scraps I put together two extremely janky reusable giftbags for the Crimbus Season, wheee
I guess these are technically reversible bags, but yes the red-and-green striped side is meant to be the outside.
I just had some red fabric scraps from some ancient sewing project I can't even remember anymore, while the green scraps where leftovers from when I recently reclaimed one of my dad's old shirts, one he had NEVER worn (and did not want), to make a basic pillowcase/covering for a bolster pillow (one my mom had previously made a hideous and unpleasant-to-touch crochet covering for, which was also filthy and could not be removed to be washed without being cut into. Yeah I did not feel bad getting rid of that covering, but I needed a replacement, and the old, fresh shirt was gonna do just fine)
Both are knit fabrics, which, y'know. Absolutely not ideal for this kinda project. Main issue I had to deal with while making these bags is that I don't really have anything I could use to temporarily draw on these softer fabrics (y'know to give myself guidelines when cutting and sewing). Like just trying to draw on them would make the fabric stretch in objection without leaving any marks on the fabric. So although my goal was to make nice even stripes, actually cutting the fabric pieces and then pinning them down evenly wasn't actually do-able. I did my best to measure the stripes out but yeah they're a bit wonky and janky and uneven. Fortunately I did not have that problem with the rest of the fabrics I used for these bags. If I hadn't made the outside patchwork then I obviously wouldn't have bothered with lining them, but it was the only way to really clean-up the insides of the bags. And, as a bonus, the lining also added more structure to the stretchy ass knit fabrics, which is super nice.
I didn't really have many big fabric pieces laying around I could us for this project, definitely not in colors I would've liked to use (like I had some bright yellow but... I don't think that really fits the Crimbus-y vibes), so for the first and the bigger bag I used some very stiff but thin cotton (possibly the very type of cotton you'd reccomend to use with patchworking??) with a widdle floral pattern on it, while the other was a much thicker cotton plain black fabric (like I'd use this one to upholster a stool or something it's so thick and stronk). And for the top of both bags I used some natural white woven cotton/linen (it's from my mom's stash, I don't know what it is), quite strong and fairly thick. IDK I'm happy I was able to use up some of these scrap fabrics I already have instead of letting them sit around collecting dust.
Last but not least, I grabbed some cord locks/toggles from my mom's stash to make them into drawstring bags, and for the cord/rope/whatever... I don't really have anything fitting for this kind of project already in stash, but I have a bunch of unused, ancient shoelaces. And y'know what. I'm not gonna use those lightbrown shoelaces for anything else. By the time my current pair of shoes needs to have its shoelaces replaced, the shoes will need to be replaced too, and I'm gonna get free shoelaces with the new shoes if/when that happens. I might as well use these spare shoelaces here. Why the fuck not.
But yeah, just a little project. Again, the bags are turbo janky, but they don't have to be fancy, they just need to hold Crimbus gifts once a year before I yeet them into storage until next year.
Here's Thace's part to this request, I hope you enjoy it 😁
_________________________________________
Thace felt tired when he and Antok finally returned to the main Marmoran headquarters after the mission they'd been on for the previous few days; they had to give Kolivan their mission reports before they could go their separate ways, though. The one thing Thace wanted to do more than anything was take a long nap in his and (Y/n's) comfortable bed in the habsuite they shared, a place where he would always be safe. Thace felt lucky to be able to court (Y/n), she was everything he'd been looking for in a life mate and he knew how much she loved him; their relationship wasn't picture perfect, but they completed each other. The one thing he thought was that (Y/n) was half galra, although the one thing about her he didn't know was that she dyed her hair purple because she loved the way it looked. He knew that she couldn't have been related to Krolia, so he figured someone else from the galra empire went to Earth long ago and got busy with a human.
The reason (Y/n) never told Thace about her dyeing her hair was because she thought he already knew, she didn't think it was important enough to bring up. Since her hair was beginning to turn its original color she decided to dye it purple again while Thace was gone which gave her a little time alone. The dye she used didn't exactly smell nice, (Y/n) was grateful that the little packet of shampoo covered up the bad smell as best as it could. Once she finished putting the dye in her hair and washed her reusable gloves all (Y/n) had to do was set the timer on her phone for the right time until she could finish the job. The sitting period could be pretty boring and until the timer went off she would play a game on her phone; Thace entered their habsuite while (Y/n) was in the bathroom, causing her to smile when she heard his familiar footsteps.
“(Y/n), where are you?” Thace called out when he didn't see his girlfriend right away, wondering exactly where she could have been; she was always there to greet him and not seeing her was strange.
“I'm in the bathroom.” (Y/n) responded, speaking loud enough for him to hear him all the way at their front door.
Thace took his shoes off by the door and went to go get a drink from the little kitchen, he figured that his lover was fixing her hair or something; technically she was fixing her hair, but not in the way he thought. He couldn't wait to embrace his mate after he'd been gone for so long, Thace was so caught up in his thoughts that he didn't even notice the scent of the hair dye. (Y/n) left the bathroom so she could greet Thace with a kiss, but as soon as he saw her a look of confusion crossed his face. Thace wasn't expecting to see (Y/n) with purple hair dye in her hair, he always thought she was half galra and seeing that she wasn't made him falter. He never got into a relationship with her just because he thought she was half galra, he loved (Y/n) regardless of her species, but seeing that she was actually fully human made him feel dumb for not realizing it sooner.
“(Y/n), you're- But I thought-” Thace sputtered out, staring directly at his girlfriend's dye filled hair.
“I'm what?” (Y/n) asked Thace in confusion, unsure as to why he looked dumbfounded when he saw her.
“I thought you were half galra, I didn't think that you simply dyed your hair.” Thace explained, needing to take a deep breath before he answered her with uncertainty.
“You thought- Oh…” (Y/n) responded with disappointment, feeling her heart nearly stop when she heard his slightly disappointed tone, she hoped that Thace wouldn't break up with her just because she wasn't half galra.
Thace stared at (Y/n), deep in his thoughts about what he just walked on; he never thought to ask her if she dyed her hair, he naturally assumed she was half galra. He didn't love her any less after finding out that his girlfriend was fully human, (Y/n) would always be the woman he fell in love with, no matter what. (Y/n) felt stupid for not telling Thace that she dyed her hair purple, she never imagined that he would think she was half galra. The young woman averted her gaze for a moment, unable to look her significant other in the eye until he said something. Neither Thace or (Y/n) knew what to say to each other right away, they needed a few minutes to process the situation at hand.
“I still love you, I will always love you; I don't want you thinking otherwise. I wasn't expecting you to be a full-blooded human, it truly doesn't matter what species you are, although you had me convinced that you were half galra.” Thace spoke with an assuring tone after he thought about what he was going to say; he knelt down in front of (Y/n) so they were at eye level, he didn't want her to think that they were only a couple because of his misunderstanding about her bloodline.
“So then you're not upset?” (Y/n) shyly questioned, looking him directly in the eye.
“No, of course I'm not. You're you, nothing can change that. Besides, I think you look gorgeous with purple hair.” Thace responded lovingly whilst trying not to let the stink of the hair dye affect him.
“I'm sorry that I didn't tell you sooner that I dye my hair, I just always assumed that you knew. I love you too, Thacey.” (Y/n) replied, feeling better knowing that he would never stop loving her over a simple miscommunication error.
Thace scooted forward a little only to scrunch his nose up a little when he breathed in the stench of the hair dye, his original plan was to kiss (Y/n) but the purple dye smelled horrible to him. He gently lifted her right/left hand with one of his so he could press a delicate kiss on her knuckles, it was his way of showing affection until he could properly kiss her later. (Y/n) beamed a smile at her boyfriend when he kissed her hand, she loved how he always found ways to show affection for her. Thace offered to help her in any way he could with the dyeing process so that she wouldn't have to do it alone, something (Y/n) appreciated very much. Until the timer on her phone went off (Y/n) told Thace about why she loved dyeing her hair purple and how long she'd been doing it for, it was something she liked talking about with people she was close with.
Unusual inventions that changed the world
Inventions have always been the driving force behind human progress. While some groundbreaking innovations like the light bulb or the airplane are well-known, there are many unusual inventions that, despite their oddity, have significantly impacted our daily lives. These quirky creations might not always make the headlines, but they have quietly revolutionized the way we live, work, and play. Let's take a closer look at some of these unconventional inventions and their surprising influence on the world.
Tumblr media
The Post-it note
The Post-it note, a simple yet ingenious invention, has become an indispensable part of modern office culture. Invented by Dr. Spencer Silver and Art Fry at 3M in the late 1970s, the Post-it note was initially the result of a failed experiment. Dr. Silver was attempting to create a super-strong adhesive, but instead, he developed a weak, reusable adhesive that could stick to surfaces without leaving a residue.
It wasn’t until Art Fry, a colleague of Silver, had the idea to use the adhesive to anchor his bookmark in his hymnbook that the Post-it note was born. Today, these little sticky notes are found in offices, schools, and homes around the world, helping people stay organized and remember important tasks. The invention of the Post-it note shows how a simple idea, born out of an accident, can evolve into a tool that millions of people rely on every day.
Velcro
Velcro, another invention that stemmed from an unexpected source, was created by Swiss engineer George de Mestral in 1941. After a walk in the woods, de Mestral noticed how burrs clung stubbornly to his clothes and his dog’s fur. Curious, he examined the burrs under a microscope and discovered that they were covered in tiny hooks that latched onto anything with a looped surface.
Inspired by nature's design, de Mestral spent years developing a synthetic version of this hook-and-loop fastener, which he named Velcro. While initially met with skepticism, Velcro quickly found its place in various industries, from fashion to space exploration. Astronauts used Velcro to secure items in zero gravity, and it has since become a staple in everything from children’s shoes to medical equipment. Velcro’s story illustrates how paying attention to nature can lead to practical and widespread innovations.
The Slinky
The Slinky, a classic toy that has entertained generations of children, was also an accidental invention. In 1943, naval engineer Richard James was working on a project to stabilize sensitive instruments on ships when he accidentally knocked a tension spring off a shelf. To his surprise, the spring "walked" down to the floor instead of simply falling.
Seeing potential in this unexpected behavior, James and his wife Betty developed the spring into a toy, which they named the Slinky. The toy was an instant hit, selling out quickly after its debut in 1945. Over 300 million Slinkys have been sold since then, proving that even the simplest of inventions can capture the imagination of millions. The Slinky reminds us that innovation can come from the most unanticipated places, and sometimes, all it takes is a new perspective to create something extraordinary.
The Super Soaker
The Super Soaker, a high-powered water gun that revolutionized water fights, was invented by engineer Lonnie Johnson in 1982. Johnson, a former NASA engineer, was working on a new type of heat pump when he accidentally discovered that his invention could shoot a powerful stream of water. Recognizing the potential for fun, he adapted the design into what would become the Super Soaker.
Despite facing numerous rejections from toy companies, Johnson eventually partnered with Larami Corporation (later acquired by Hasbro), and the Super Soaker became a massive success. Since its release, over $1 billion worth of Super Soakers have been sold. The invention not only brought joy to countless children but also demonstrated the power of perseverance and the importance of thinking outside the box.
The Frisbee
The Frisbee, a simple flying disc, has become a beloved pastime for people of all ages. Its origins, however, are rooted in an unlikely source. In the 1930s, students at Yale University began throwing empty pie tins from the Frisbie Pie Company to each other, turning it into a game. The idea caught on, and in 1948, Walter Morrison and Warren Franscioni developed a plastic version called the "Pluto Platter."
This plastic disc, later rebranded as the Frisbee by Wham-O, became a cultural phenomenon. Today, Frisbee is more than just a casual game; it has evolved into competitive sports like Ultimate Frisbee and Disc Golf. The Frisbee's journey from a pie tin to a global sporting accessory highlights how even the most ordinary objects can be transformed into something extraordinary with a bit of creativity.
Tumblr media
Cattery? You're looking for the cattery? Sorry sir, no one here but us bats! ;D
Describe your most recent purchase: Various groceries and toiletries.
Did you enjoy the last movie you watched in theaters? I went to see Wild Robot with my mom on Wednesday. The trailer alone had me choking up during previous theater visits, so I knew I had to see it and I'm so glad I did. Out of all the movies we've gone to over the last year, that one has to be my favorite. Also, I've been thinking about how "children's movies" hit so much harder when you're an adult. Sure, as a child, I could understand the broad strokes of sadness, but now that I'm older and have lived something of a life, movies like that absolutely emotionally destroy me. Inside Out 2 had a big impact on me too, but that one was more like an intense therapy session.
If you make surveys, where’s the last place you saw a survey made by you on another person’s site? Sometimes I run across old surveys of mine while looking for something to take, but I don't stop to see how recently they were taken. Then there are surveys that make me think, "Hey, wait a minute. Did I make that, or--?" Some of the questions seem so familiar, like something I would ask, but then there are those few that make me doubtful. I took one just the other day that had me wondering, but I don't recall who I snagged it from.
Do you take the subway train often (if your city has one)? I've never taken a subway before. I guess the closest equivalent would be the trolly we took while visiting San Francisco.
What shoes did you wear today? Black and white slip-ons.
Does your sibling have a significant other? Last I knew, they do.
Have you ever cried at a real wedding? I think I might have cried a little at Steph and Shelly's wedding back in 2014.
How would you feel if a girl asked your boyfriend out for a drink? I'm not in a relationship. I'm also not a straight woman, so…I think a lot would depend on the context. Obviously, if there seemed to be a romantic/flirty connotation, then I wouldn't be comfortable with it.
Do you live in an apartment or a house? A house.
Do you use Skype? I've never used Skype.
What do your flip flops look like? N/a.
Any idea what you want for your next birthday? I don't really want anything gift-wise. I would love it if it was snowy, though.
Are there any gadgets of yours that need charging right now? There's nothing that needs charging, but the little thermometer on my desk needs new batteries.
What’s the name of your nearest grocery store? Big Lots has some groceries and I think Target has a small selection as well, but as for "real" grocery stores, Walmart and Vitamin Cottage are about equally close.
What do you use to remove makeup? I don't wear makeup.
Which awards show would you wanna go to the most (e.g Oscars, Grammys etc.)? None. That sort of thing doesn't interest me whatsoever.
Any idea what time you’ll be going to bed tonight? I'll most likely be in bed around 7:00pm, but I probably won't actually fall asleep until sometime closer to 8:00-9:00pm. Gotta continue working my way through a 6 1/2 hour Mythillogical Loch Ness Monster episode from The Histocrat.
Do you think George Clooney is hot? I'm kind of indifferent. I don't think he's ugly, though.
Have you ever participated in local magazine cover girl searches? No.
What colour is your keyboard? Black with white letters/etc.
Do you keep the plastic/paper/whatever bags after you buy stuff? We used to keep the plastic ones for kitty litter, but Walmart switched over to reusable bags some while ago, so we've just been using those instead (not for litter, lmao, but in general - just in case that wasn't clear).
Do you own any high waisted pants? No.
Do you know anyone who has two different coloured eyes? There was a kitty named Claire at the animal shelter who had two different colored eyes (one blue and one gold), but I've never met a person like that.
Do you wanna be a pirate or an elf? An elf. You'll never catch me sailing the high seas.
Have you ever purchased anything online? Yeah.
Gold or silver accessories? Gold.
Have you ever been called a skank/slut because of the way you dress? I don't think so.
Have you ever ridden an elephant? I might have when I was a baby. I have very vague memories of doing so, but I could be mistaken.
Are you a fan of acrylic nails? I was in the past. Or just longer nails in general. Now I work with my hands too much for them to be anything more than an annoyance/hindrance.
“Wear Your Coat, You’ll Catch a Cold” - Sicktember, Chris & Jenn
18. “Wear Your Coat, You’ll Catch a Cold”
23. Coughing Fit
@sicktember
My Ocs: Chris & Jenn
Read on AO3
When Jenn got home from yoga class, she dropped off her yoga mat in the wicker basket in the living room of their small apartment and walked to the bedroom to jump in the shower.
Walking into the room, she kicked off her shoes and turned to their queen bed to see Chris covered up under their white comforter with a fuzzy blanket over top of him. She pouted her lip and gently shook him.
“Hey, I thought you went out?” she asked. She and Chris left their apartment at the same time 10am. Chris heading to Target and the beer distributor to grab last minute snacks and drinks for Owen’s house party tonight and Jenn going to the gym to attend her weekly yoga class. Chris opened his eyes to see his girlfriend crouched by the side of their bed, her dark green eyes filled with worry as she noticed his rosy cheeks and pale complexion. He coughed to clear his throat before he spoke, “I came home. I don’t feel good” he said pulling the covers up to his chin and shivering.
Jenn pressed her palm to his forehead, “You’re really hot, babe” she announced as she felt the heat radiating off of her boyfriend’s toasty forehead.
“I was in the beer distributor with a 6-pack in my hand then it suddenly hit me all at once. I left the beer and walked right out of the store. I have the chills so bad” he said, letting out a train of harsh coughs into his elbow.
Jenn frowned at Chris’ condition, “You don’t sound good” she said, standing up and walking into their en-suite bathroom.
Seconds later, she returned with a wet rag, a thermometer, and a package of Tylenol. She walked over to the bed and set down the Tylenol. Then, took a seat on the edge of the bed, holding the digital thermometer in one hand, the wet rag in another.
“Sit up,” she commanded, holding the thermometer up in the air. Chris opened his eyes again and complied with her directions. Jenn fixed the two pillows behind him to give him a comfortable sitting arrangement.
“Open” she said and slipped the instrument under his tongue, running her hand through his matted hair and waited for the thermometer to beep.
As soon as it beeped, she gently slid it out and read the temperature. Meanwhile, Chris turned to his side to release another series of harsh coughs.
She frowned instantly as she read 102.2 flashing on the screen. “Oof. We’re staying home tonight” she explained with disappointment, turning the thermometer to show Chris the results.
“Fuck. I don’t know how I got so sick” he said, hoarsely pulling the covers back up to his chin.
Jenn smirked. “I think I have an idea” she said, thinking back to a couple of days ago. The weather was finally feeling like Fall with the crisp cold air and a cold front lingering. It was the first football game of the semester, and they met up with their group of friends to cheer on the team.
Jenn was bundled up in her puffer jacket and Chris wore a light flannel. Before they left the apartment, Jenn said to him “Wear your coat, you’ll catch a cold” which Chris passed off. “I’ll be fine. I won’t get cold” he assured her.
“Next time, you’ll wear a jacket” she said pursing her lips. Chris rolled his eyes at her and coughed into his elbow wincing at the pain it caused to his throat.
 “I’ll get you better. Promise” she said kissing his forehead then turning toward the nightstand and opening the package of Tylenol. She shook the package and handed Chris two tablets and pulled out her reusable water bottle from her tote bag that lay next to the nightstand.
“Thank you” he whispered. Jenn smiled and pressed the wet rag to his forehead when he was done drinking the water.
“Get some rest. I’ll make some soup and text Owen the bad news. Love you” she said softly patting his leg.
Chris yawned and closed his eyes, curling up with the mountain of covers and drifted off to sleep.
15 Amazing Tent Camping Setup Ideas for Families
Camping is a fantastic way to bond with your family, unplug from daily distractions, and immerse yourself in nature. However, creating the perfect camping setup can be the key to a stress-free and enjoyable trip. Here are 15 amazing tent camping setup ideas to make your family camping experience unforgettable.
Tumblr media
1. Choose the Perfect Campsite
When selecting your campsite, look for a flat, shaded area with easy access to water and amenities. Proximity to hiking trails or scenic views can also enhance your camping experience. Check for hazards like overhanging branches or uneven ground before pitching your tent.
2. Use a Family-Sized Tent
Invest in a spacious tent that accommodates your family comfortably. Consider models with separate rooms or dividers for added privacy. Ensure the tent is weather-resistant and well-ventilated.
3. Create a Comfortable Sleeping Area
Upgrade from traditional sleeping bags to air mattresses or camping cots for better comfort. Use fitted sheets, warm blankets, and pillows to replicate the cozy feel of home.
4. Set Up a Tarp or Canopy
A tarp or canopy provides shade during the day and protection from rain. Use it to create a communal area for dining or relaxing. Lightweight, collapsible options are ideal for easy transport.
5. Organize a Kitchen Zone
Designate a specific area for cooking and food storage. Use portable camp stoves, foldable tables, and bins for easy organization. Keep a cooler stocked with ice to store perishable items.
6. Bring a Campfire Kit
A campfire is a central part of the camping experience. Bring firewood, kindling, and matches. A fire pit with a grill top can double as a cooking area for meals like hot dogs or marshmallows.
7. Pack Compact Furniture
Foldable chairs and tables provide comfort without taking up too much space. Opt for lightweight options that are easy to transport and set up.
8. Add String Lights for Ambiance
Hang solar-powered or battery-operated string lights around your campsite for a warm, inviting glow. They’re not only practical for visibility but also create a magical atmosphere.
9. Create a Kids’ Play Area
Keep the little ones entertained by setting up a play zone. Bring toys, board games, or outdoor games like frisbees and badminton. A small pop-up tent can serve as their personal hangout.
10. Set Up a Washing Station
A simple washing station with a collapsible sink, biodegradable soap, and a water jug makes cleaning up after meals or activities a breeze. It’s also handy for brushing teeth and washing hands.
11. Use Storage Solutions
Keep your campsite clutter-free with stackable bins, hanging organizers, or over-the-door shoe racks. These are great for storing essentials like utensils, toiletries, and snacks.
12. Prepare for All Weather Conditions
Pack extra tarps, rain covers, and blankets to stay prepared for sudden weather changes. Layered clothing ensures everyone stays comfortable, whether it’s hot or cold.
13. Incorporate a Dining Area
Set up a dedicated dining area with a foldable picnic table or ground cover. Use reusable plates, cups, and utensils to minimize waste. Don’t forget a tablecloth for added charm!
14. Bring Entertainment Options
Aside from the play area, plan activities like storytelling, stargazing, or nature scavenger hunts. A portable projector can even transform your camping trip into an outdoor movie night.
15. Focus on Safety
