Sadly I must report that when the fucking thing actually works and has a screen that isn't smashed, the Retroid Pocket 2S is a really top shelf handheld. Sticks and triggers are good (and hall effect), d-pad is a clone of the PS Vita's so it feels like sex, membrane buttons on ABXY are great, and all emulators are set up for you out of the box.
Convoluted PCB on the inside, though, two cables run along the back of the screen and the battery rests on top of them, and the screen is essentially fused to the front shell so Retroid has to sell or replace screens as a full front shell swap. The right side PCB half (controls d-pad, L buttons and left stick) bumps into the shell's retention clips if you try to take it out, it's a tight fit. Mysteriously, fixing the screen actually did fix the HDMI output.

I beat Dragon Warrior 1!
I took a break from playing Dragon Quest 5 and many other games during finals season because i needed something I could burn through to de-stress and pick up and put down whenever i had a few free minutes. I'm very happy that i picked this game up because not only is it fun, I could grind as a form of catharsis.
I took me a solid couple weeks and a lot of it was grinding. Because i was playing this for fun more than anything I did use save states, and played it on my beloved Retroid Pocket 2S (love that thing). I looked at some maps and stuff too, but I didn't follow any guides (I didn't need to because I've beaten other versions of this game before).
This game isn't hard, it's just really grindy but I Love Grinding so I was quite pleased with this.
The story still holds up to this day tbh, there isnt a huge plot but i think it's good especially for 1986/1990. I had a lot of fun playing this game, and now I'm sort of slowly playing Dragon Warrior 2 (my favourite of the Erdrick Trilogy), but for now I'm back to Dragon Quest 5.
I had so much fun playing this game and I absolutely would again, especially during finals season lol.

I love looking at ROM compatibility lists because now I know 1) there's a game called Stuart Little 3 - Big Photo Adventure and 2) it runs perfectly on the Retroid Pocket 3+.

Retroid Pocket 3
So, I’ve been pretty heavy on the programming push lately, but it’s not all I’ve been up to. So, back around the start of the pandemic, I started work making a PiGrrl handheld emulator device. PiGrrl is basically a Game Boy Clone that runs with a Raspberry Pi at it’s core. I ordered a bunch of parts and a case, I already had a Pi (I have several), and then the Pandemic caused my parts to take…

Just bought a Retroid Pocket 3+ on an ebay auction.
I still feel slightly panicked because I was bidding really close to the end of the auction & 2 hours earlier I lost the final bid on a different auction for the same item. I'm still kind of trying to calm down because my heart was pounding as I tried to make sure I won cause I got out bid for a sec just like on the earlier auction.
It was a little more than I was hoping for & I forgot to add a coupon I got that is going to expire tomorrow(don't have a reason to use it on anything else at the moment) but the price is still less than I would have paid for a full price one.
I've been hoping to find a handheld like this for a while, my steamdeck I got I think 2-3 years ago is really great but it's a little big for traveling sometimes. I want to get an Odin 2 Mini but that costs a lot so I have to wait cause it's one of those big purchases I have to wait for. I was going to get a TrimUI Smart Pro cause I found one for a good price over the weekend but by chance found some Retroid Pocket 2 & 3+ for decent prices.
The TrimUi Smart Pro is a nice handheld from what I saw especially if you can get it for a good price since the price went up for it. I just went for the Retroid Pocket 3+ because I was curious about it in the past, can play a bit more & plays the games I want to have on the go.
Can't wait to try Harvest Moon Animal Parade on this, I got dolphin on my phone but I worry about my phone's battery so I only use it for reading/video use when needed.

Retroid Pocket 2+ Review: A Retro Gamer's Delight
The Retroid Pocket 2+ has been on the market for a couple years now. However, this device holds a special place in our hearts—it was our very first retro handheld. Given its significance to our journey into retro gaming, it only made sense that our first device review would be dedicated to this beloved console.
The Retroid Pocket 2+ is an impressive handheld console perfect for retro gaming enthusiasts. It builds upon the success of its predecessor, the Retroid Pocket 2, offering a blend of nostalgia and modern performance.
Design and Build Quality
The Retroid Pocket 2+ is compact and portable, easily fitting into a pocket or bag. Its solid build quality and matte finish make it feel durable and premium. The button layout is intuitive, with responsive buttons and an improved D-pad for precise control. The addition of analog sticks enhances gameplay for 3D titles.
Display
The 3.5-inch IPS display is bright and vibrant, offering sharp visuals that bring retro games to life. Its 640x480 resolution is perfect for retro titles, ensuring crisp visuals without pixelation or blurring.
Performance
The Retroid Pocket 2+ boasts an upgraded processor, significantly improving performance compared to its predecessor. It handles a wider range of emulators and games, including demanding titles from consoles like the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and Nintendo 64.
A community-created spreadsheet details an extensive game compatibility list and recommended settings (http://tinyurl.com/RP2PlusGameSettings).
The device excels at playing GameBoy Advance and Nintendo DS games. While the single-screen experience for DS games might not be ideal for all titles, it suffices for most.
Operating System and Customization
The Android-based operating system allows users to install various emulators and apps from the Google Play Store. The Retroid Launcher simplifies navigation and customization. Multitasking is smooth, and the device offers plenty of customization options for those who like to tinker.
Battery Life
Battery life is decent, offering around 5-6 hours of gameplay on a single charge. The USB-C charging port ensures faster and more convenient charging.
Game Library and Emulation
The Retroid Pocket 2+ supports a wide range of emulators, allowing you to play games from classic systems like the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and more. The improved hardware also means that it can handle PlayStation 1 and even some PlayStation 2 games.
While most emulators run well, some may require tweaking settings for optimal performance. Demanding PSP and N64 titles might experience occasional frame drops or stuttering.
Final Thoughts
The Retroid Pocket 2+ is an excellent choice for retro gaming enthusiasts. Its compact design, improved performance, and flexibility make it a standout handheld emulation device. While not a replacement for main gaming consoles, it's perfect for gaming on the go and offers hours of entertainment with a vast library of classic games.
If you're a fan of retro games, the Retroid Pocket 2+ is a solid investment that delivers a great gaming experience at a reasonable price. It's a go-to device for reliving the best of the GameBoy Advance and Nintendo DS eras.

meant to post this last night but after probably 2 fucking weeks of trying so fucking hard to beat the magimaster at the top for the cultists tower in ffvi i FINALLY fucking did it last night... literally The Worst Battle of all time bc not only was he nigh on impossible to damage (i had to fling super balls at him to attack) i had to be super mindful of his health and make sure life3 was casted on some of the party so they could win but jesus christ this was an awful awful fight and im so fucking glad i finished it... my strategy was to use relfect on him and then bounce life3 and cures off him and constantly scan and throw super balls which FINALLY worked...
