these two panels are so hauntingly despairingly beautiful I just can't--
in the last moments of their lives, they have that sad smile on their face of having come to the realization that they.... just can't go on anymore, that this is... the end, that if they wait any longer they can't protect what they need to
plus add to it the fact that both of them were trying to protect Oz here makes it all the more heartbreaking
#pandora hearts#elliot nightray#alice baskerville#retrace lix#retrace lxxiv#may-reads-ph#if elliot's death hit me hard alice's hit me 100x harder#i literally can't read beyond this point fr#i keep trying to read this chapter come to this point stare at the wall and close the chapter like ok maybe later

ooc; pandora hearts raw retrace 74 spoilers / recap!
raws can be downloaded here at the lj comm.
good gracious, what a chapter! without knowing a hint of japanese, I think I may have gotten a very very good idea of what happened during this chapter... well, I'll just wait for the translators to do their thing!
this is a sort of recap from someone who spent too much time analyzing every bit of this chapter.
MAJOR MAJOR spoilers and theories from yours truly under the cut!
includes incredible mindbogglery from mochizuki jun.
it seems that echo has shown up to aid alice against jack, possessing oz at this point--but no, jack won't allow that, and he reveals the chains floating in the air. using oz's body, jack, in his usual psychotic rage, causes a huge explosion.
this said huge explosion is heard and seen throughout the land, from ada, where vincent had sent her to keep safe, to break, still fighting with duke barma and dodo. break, being the fantastic swashbuckler he is, breaks out of duke barma's grasp and makes his way to where the action is (presumably).
now, it has been proven! leo has been lying on the ground this entire time! poor boy.
now jack says some more stuff and cue flashback to the tragedy. here we have oswald-glenn being ridiculously awesome, and I can't really tell what he's doing but I assume he's working to correct the tragedy. jack is running through the halls, carrying an unconscious child vincent, until he stumbles upon a hallway of dead people. here, I assume, he's realized the magnitude of what he's done.
alice is still watching from her tower. then we have jack stumbling upon oswald-glenn, who has just slain someone. really I dunno who. jack screams at oswald-glen, and oswald goes berserk with him. then little gil comes running for oswald, jack turns, and it cuts to blood splatters. of course, this is where jack runs gil through with his sword and pretty much desecrates oswald.
now jack comes in, bloody and desperate, to alice's chamber. presumably, jack starts being psychotic and creepy and he, I guess, is attempting to get alyss (will-of-the-abyss version) to help him with the rest of his plan.
at this point, I presume that alice realises what evils jack plans to do, and refuses.
jack goes absolutely insane.
he then goes on a tirade of screaming and shaking alice trying to get will-of-the-abyss-alyss out of her, I guess, but alice does her thing and is indescribably awesome.
she pulls out a pair of scissors--herself--and refuses to do anything jack wants. then she glances over behind jack, and I assume she spots oz here. whether she sees him in the bloody black rabbit, or just sees him while he peers through jack's memory, I dunno, but she smiles and reminisces of all the love she shared with oz.
then, to protect the world and to make sure jack can never reach the will of the abyss through her again, alice stabs herself.
with a pair of scissors.
yes, I think I understood that right. alice is the one who kills herself. with a pair of scissors. to keep jack from being able to access the abyss through her.
oz goes catatonic, and jack puts on that sweet face of his again, pats oz, and lets him wake up in the clearing. a bunch of baskervilles seem to be closing in on them, and when alice rushes to protect oz, she stumbles and falls.
surprise, surprise, gil arrives, completely insanified by the sudden influx of memories! standing above oz, his gun in hand, he screams something at oz, and oz recognizes that gil is not himself. at all.
pulling and tugging on gil's cloak, oz gets desperate, and gil, dazed, shoots oz.
oz falls.
just as alice is screaming for him, and break enters the clearing, gil, I suppose, begins to realize (at least partially) what he did, and collapses, until he feels a hand on his wrist--glenn's hand.
more accurately, leo-glenn's hand.
gil looks up, and leo is standing once more, at his side, smiling.
meanwhile, oz opens his eyes and finds his hand empty. closing his eyes once more, the chapter ends with a shot of oz lying on the ground.
if you were like me, I screamed and yelled and babbled nonsense throughout the entire chapter. what have we learned?
echo arrived to aid alice, and break escaped from dodo.
the person who killed alice was alice, and she did it, in my theory, to prevent jack from ever having access through her to the abyss again.
gil does not recognize oz as being oz anymore.
gil shot oz.
leo is alive, and has gotten up (finally)
oz may or may not be dead.
if anyone has any theories, assumptions, or ideas about this chapter, feel free to reblog and tell them to me!

I was mostly wrong about everything else (those plot twists were insane even now I can't make any sense of them no way could I have figured that out)
but I was right about this so yaaaaay
#pandora hearts#may-reads-ph#retrace lxxiv#this is the longest and most emotionally charged chapter so far#i am just having so many thoughts i don't even know how to put it down#jack....jack why are you so batshit crazy?#even after glen is giving him this explanation the only thing he says is--- no i am not talking about the people who cares about them#i am talking about#the chains#why did you stop the chains from breaking??#hello????#wow no words#and his complete lack of reaction at alice's death#tbh but so far i had been reading on like oh jack how much more crazier can you get? i am enjoying your downfall lmao#but after alice's death i downright hate him sorry

oooh, you are right! I am sorry I just saw that room very different from Alice's usual stone-built room and jumped to the conclusion that Jack must have taken her to his home haha; (but i do have very shaky evidence he did take her to his home at the end of this reblog hfjdk)
and in Retrace 31 too, Jack chats with the Intention in a similar looking room and openly states he is on Baskerville grounds so haha, yeah:
in any case, it appears this room(hall?) similar to the one in Retrace 73 where Jack is chatting with the Intention might be the actual room at the top of the tower while the other stone-built rooms are on lower floors?
because no matter how i see it, I can't imagine how one part of the room is built in a rudimentary stone structure and the other part is built with intricate architecture.
This, the room where Jack finds one of Oz's body disintegrating when he tries to store Lacie's memories, it has a bookshelf, among other things. I feel like it's also doubles as a nursery for Alice for her to study during some time of the day. perhaps, she brings her toys there too?
okay, so rereading Retrace 99, I have a general idea of the stone tower:
Here is the entrance:
next, the stairs to the top:
More stairs:
so, one of these rooms do have a relatively ornate door:
and then we come to the room where Black Alice was waiting for Jack in Retrace 74/ Core of the Abyss in Retrace 99 (as you say, both these scenes are the same.)
this room is at the top of the tower (cuz Oz shouts to Gil to leave him and go after Alice to the top.)
yes, yes this is the exact room where Jack was talking to White Alice in Retrace 73. Thanks for correcting me!
these, again from Retrace 99.
I am here trying to reconfigure my assumption of the structure of that tower bc I thought it had nothing but one stone room at the top lol. but it appears there are floors and other rooms too. Maybe, those draped windows are just for pretence, and you can't actually open them, so Lacie and Alice come down to the stone rooms on the lower floors? Ok, i am looking too much into this, so I will stop lol.
I am still confused over the graves btw. I like your theory that Jack built a separate grave for Lacie in the Vessalius gardens, and that he took Alice to Lacie's grave situated in Baskerville grounds.
so that Alice might not have been taken to Vessalius gardens ever.
even then this scene? (Retrace 8)
and then Oscar says this scenery did exist in the Vessalius Mansion a hundred years ago? (Retrace 13)
I don't know. this is why I was leaning toward the Manipulated Memories Theory since it was Jack who appeared in this memory and warned them about the Intention. I am not sure if this scene ever happened, if he ever took Alice to his place? ok, but on the whole, this scene is a bit iffy to me anyway, because even if Oz and B-Rabbit!Alice can see this memory (bc of their connection to Jack and Alice), I doubt Gil would be able to see it? He has connections to the Tragedy, Glen and Jack, yes, but not in a physical sense.
In Retrace 31, Jack does hint toward sneaking out of Baskerville grounds without Glen's permission.
And later, White Alice repeats this to Vincent:
but her memories are already gone at this point so I don't know if her going over to the Vessalius Gardens is something that already happened or yet to happen.
Finally, in Retrace 37:
Isn't the statue of the Angel(?) the same as that in Vessalius Grounds? I feel like it's the same grave.
On the whole, my conclusion is that only one grave for Lacie has been shown to us throughout the series and it's under the tree in Vessalius Grounds and that somehow, sometime, one day, Jack did manage to smuggle White Alice out of the tower.
buuut i haven't checked all chapters thoroughly or anything ahfgsj, this is just from what i remember and checking those chapters alone. so feel free to reblog and correct me if you find anything! I don't mind at all; in fact, I would rest better if all my confusions are resolved lol
@longagoitwastuesday hi, just thought I should share this with you! It appears Jack did take White Alice to his home. So, the visit to Lacie's grave was not a manipulated memory as I was wondering. (Retrace 73)
Like, the Tower in the Baskerville grounds don't have all those curtains and such intricate interior architecture? It's just mostly a stone prison, more or less.
#retrace viii#retrace xiii#retrace xxxvii#retrace xxxi#retrace lxix#retrace lxxi#retrace lxxiv#retrace xcix#may-answers#may-reads-ph#rereblog#long post#pretty sure i am explaining myself very badly but.... hope it makes sense? haha#anyway tl;dr#the jack and alice visit lacie's grave scene happens in vessalius grounds whether it is a true memory or a manipulated one is what idk#also sorry for answering this late! i wanted to properly check for alice's panels before replying to you but i kept#putting it off for some reason#even now i am not entirely satisfied cuz i am sure something or the other must have missed my mind but ok#black alice/white alice povs are spread throughout the series so it def requires a complete reread to see what escaped me#if you remember something please tell me ok?
