Can we all appreciate the fact that Furukawa Yuta can turn his back to the audience without losing their attention/focus? That’s not an easy thing to do. I guess it says a lot about his stage presence (which is great).
When Romeo lets go of Mercutio’s hand to take the knife (and stab Tybalt), KimuraBenvolio almost immediately reaches to hold Mercutio’s hand, like he needs Mercutio to know that he’s there, even though Mercutio is already gone.
See? In the first picture, Romeo is holding Mercutio’s hand, then he lets go, and then Benvolio holds Mercutio’s hand. It’s very deliberate, too. He thinks it through as much as he can think anything through in his state of grief and confusion.
Oh, and he’s still holding Mercutio’s hand in the beginning of the song, “La vengeance.”
Okay, this is adorable. When Juliet asks Romeo (played by Furukawa Yuta) how he got to her balcony, he looks over the railing and does this tiny, absolutely adorable little giggle that kind of reads like he’s just realizing it's actually a bit of a hike from point A to point B and Juliet has a point, but he didn’t notice before because he was too focused on her.
Let’s be honest about one thing: KimuraBenvolio thinks a hug is a handclasp and an awkward thump on the back. MiuraBenvolio thinks a hug is pretty much the Heimlich.
Could you please use an entirely randomised way to pick a scene from R&J, and write your running commentary about that scene without ANY editing? ÓωÒ I'd like to see the rawest of your thoughts ^///^
@chibimyumi I’ve finally done it.
Oddly enough, I randomised and it told me to do Black Version Verone. So...
To start, A+ on the dancing. Seen a lot of RetJ, this one defo has my favourite choreo. But it also sort of looks like they’re having a dance-off. RetJ Glee edition, when?
Mercutio climbed out of the trash specifically to torment Tybalt. It’s fucking working. Tybalt took a shower and did his hair for this shit.
Prince’s costume, A+. Sick jacket, Escy. Also, those flags. Now I wanna play capture the flag.
Whoa, flip. Jesus, Merc.
LOL, Benvolio, leader? More likely than you think.
Flag boys are LIVING. That knife toss. Excellent. I’m also 90% sure Benvolio just flubbed his harmony.
Escalus is NOT flubbing his harmonies. He’s killing it.
Lord C is clearly copying the Montague hair aesthetic, while simultaneously looking like a villain from a barbie movie.
All in all, I actually really like the composition of this scene. Shoutout for including the Lords and Ladies, because it really shows that the problem isn’t just the kids.
End note: Mercutio, I am begging, please stop making that noise. And Tybalt, please stop laughing like you’re recording the laugh track for Friends.
The moment it dawns on Mercutio that he’s half a foot shorter than both his best friend and his boyfriend. He still has all the points for “Most Likely To Start A Stupid Fight With Tybalt,” though.
Also the moment Benvolio realizes he’s dating the sorest loser in Verona.
If you choose to interpret Benvolio and Mercutio’s relationship as romantic in the Toho Black Version of Roméo et Juliette, “Comment lui dire?” is just that much more painful.
Look at the way Benvolio shakes his head before he confesses that he understands Romeo’s pain. It’s a subtle, semiconscious gesture. He has to bring the news of Juliet’s death to Romeo. He knows Juliet’s death will hurt Romeo. It’s a pain they can share, but in order to share it, Benvolio has to tell Romeo the full extent of his relationship with Mercutio, and he doesn’t seem ready for that.
When he tells Romeo that Juliet is dead, too, he looks like he wants to say more. But Romeo isn’t listening anymore, so telling him won’t make a difference. Instead, Benvolio just runs.
