Notes: Settled right after Bloody Halloween. Literally right after so yeah, it hurts and the fact the preview chapter was Baji hugging a very dissociated and lost Haru doesn't make it less painful probably >.< (I swear that was a coincidence)

Also, the necrosis is not literal, just... metaphorical necrosis of his pain bc repressing it will get infected, idk if it makes sense.

Warnings: Dissociation and grief (to be specific, first moments of shock). Broken mind and confusing reality is implied too.

“The cops are coming!”

“We need to leave. Sanzu?”

“Sanzu! C’mon, we need to leave! Now!”

The echoes were still reverberating in his head. He vaguely remembered being frozen in place, standing in the middle of that abandoned scrapyard with disbelief plastered on his face — or maybe it was pure shock because no way this was happening. Right?

“Let me know if it stings, alright?”

Mucho’s voice was soft, filled with obvious concern as his captain started to disinfect the cut on his leg. Why would it sting? It wasn’t even that deep, it didn’t hurt anyway — it didn’t even matter if it did, not when Baji… 

No, this couldn’t be real. A nightmare? Yeah, it was probably one of his stupid nightmares. Or his brain getting confused again, mixing everything and creating a memory that never happened. 

“Sanzu?”

One more time, that voice snapped him back to reality. What was the question? He blinked with confusion, trying to figure it out. Right, his wound. 

“No, I can’t feel anything.” 

A monotonous response was the best he could do, earning a worried look in return. 

“Anything? It’s pretty deep, you might need stitches.”

He shrugged his shoulders, indifferent to that idea. It was difficult to even recall how he got hurt — the image of Baji lying on the ground was etched on his retina, preventing him from remembering anything else. 

“Then do it, I don’t mind.”

Why bother anyway? Everything was falling apart — and for what? He knew the answer, of course he knew it. For Mikey, that was the reason behind Baji’s stupidly reckless actions.

“Here?” His captain shook his head at that. “No, it could get infected, we should go to the hospital.”

“No.”

Maybe that was what he deserved — to let it rot as a punishment for his sins. For being so weak — a helpless kid — unable to do anything but watch as one of his best friends became unreachable forever.

“Sanzu, I’m serious.”

Usually, that stern voice was enough to make him comply. Not today.

“Me too, I hate hospitals. I’m not setting a foot in one."

Hospitals were full of memories — of the ones he fought so hard to bury. How many afternoons did he spend in that colorless room? Trying to fill the void in their lives with random chit-chat about whatever happened at school that week. Baji was always better than him at that, it took him less time to adapt and stop waiting for Mikey’s reactions to their anecdotes. 

Baji was… 

“...dead.” 

It was nothing more than a weak whisper, but enough to make Mucho lift his head and look at his face. Whatever he saw, was clearly a worrying sight for the older boy — why else was he suddenly hugging him? Gently wiping his tears and — oh, when did he start crying? 

“I didn’t know you two were close, I’m sorry.”

“No, we weren’t.” He muttered in a choked voice. “Not anymore, we were… Childhood friends.”

Yeah, they weren’t close. This didn’t make sense, he shouldn’t be sobbing like a baby right now — allowing his captain to rock his body in a soothing motion. Baji didn’t even remember those years when they only had each other to navigate their loss, when they used to be two half of the same pain. 

Why did it hurt so much then? Why did it feel like he just lost a limb? Like a part of his body was slowly dying too, forever gone the moment Baji spoke his last words. Ones that didn’t mention him.

Sanzu couldn’t even blame him for that — he was no one, just a pathetic weakling who couldn’t stop crying on those arms that seemed to want to protect him from the world. 

One day, the world would be the one that would need to be protected from Sanzu Haruchiyo.

Retrospectiva: Enquanto Eles Não Vêm

Na primavera de 1978, um misterioso ataque assolou os habitantes de Paraíso Florestal, uma pequena cidade localizada em uma área remota da Bahia. Trinta e sete anos depois, um terrível incidente engole o local, obrigando as autoridades a enviarem uma equipe de soldados para investigar o ocorrido.

Desde sua chegada à pacata cidade, David e Lívia deparam-se com uma calma sepulcral; ninguém é encontrado nas ruas, nos becos ou nas casas. Tomados pela sensação de ameaça iminente, os soldados refugiam-se em uma antiga mansão, desconhecendo o verdadeiro horror que varreu a pequena Paraíso. Dentro daquelas paredes, oculto pelas trevas, o maior e mais escuro de todos os medos os espera.

A ORIGEM

Foi com essa sinopse que apresentei o verdinho ao mundo. Em 2018, tive a oportunidade de lançar a edição física na Bienal de SP, na companhia dos editores e amigos que o tornaram possível. Na abertura da edição mais recente do livro, é possível constatar na primeira página a seguinte declaração: “Enquanto Eles Não Vêm é uma obra influenciada por muitos outros trabalhos renomados, tais como as novelas Pulp, os contos de horror de HP Lovecraft e as franquias Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark, dentre outros títulos que marcaram época.”

A verdade é que, muito mais do que o meu ingresso no terror, o verdinho é uma carta de amor ao gênero: uma revisitação a minha infância regada de livros, jogos e filmes repletos de personagens e criaturas assustadoramente fantásticas.

14 de julho de 2015. Em uma noite chuvosa, David Cordova e Lívia Sanches integram uma equipe especial de soldados em uma missão relâmpago ao interior da Bahia, com destino a Paraíso Florestal, um antigo povoado que foi palco de incidências ufológicas e misteriosas. Mal sabiam eles que aquela seria a noite mais infernal de suas vidas.

"Tudo está vazio. Eu não entendo. Parece que as pessoas foram obrigadas a deixar esse local."

Separados da equipe, David e Lívia exploram as ruas do povoado e se deparam com algo abismalmente assustador: uma legião de criaturas famintas que parecem ter escapado de uma dimensão paralela. Tomados pelo choque, os oficiais iniciam uma luta insana pela sobrevivência e são obrigados a se refugiarem em uma mansão não muito longe dali.

À medida em que exploram a mansão e descobrem o passado da Família Mombach, os personagens são confrontados pelos maiores medos de sua vida: o próprio passado. David e Lívia são soldados física e emocionalmente treinados, mas carregam traumas dolorosos. Os monstros que os espreitam são terríveis... Suas lembranças, ainda mais. No decorrer da trama, somos apresentados aos membros da misteriosa família e cada um de seus segredos.

I think we really need to give a collective shoutout to Gummy not only in general, but especially in IS2. The inability to rely solely on medics as healing due to the ever-present possibility that you won’t get medic vouchers means that a 4-star defender who heals with an autoskill is very, very convenient. Naturally this would allow some characters like Blemmy and Nearl to shine, but they shine enough both due to their capability, and also because of the fact that simply staring at them is enough to damage your retinas.

No, Gummy works well for a few simple reasons: 1) Her best sustaining skill in this game mode is her S1 2) Her S1 has no caveats other than its short charge. No requirements for the target to be under 50% HP, and no requirement to attack. As soon as it’s charged, it heals. This means she can waste it, but it also means that she’ll be willing to heal someone at 51% HP, something I find more annoying about the other healing defenders than helpful, especially because Nerve Damage is so prevalent. 3) Gummy being a 4 star is cheap to acquire, and can be gotten through temporary recruitment much more reliably than the likes of Saria and Blemishine. Especially if you’re like me and only pick the beginning squad that gives three random vouchers with one guaranteed temporary recruitment 4-star.

Earlier today I had an incredible IS2 run in which I’d gotten no medics, and I was now forced to do an emergency op of The Red Mist. I immediately wrote this off as an incredibly unfortunate level roll, and a guaranteed loss, but I had forgotten a couple of artifacts I’d gotten.

First was the No. 073 Safety Reagent

Yes this works with skills like Gummy’s healing. It essentially made her capable of fully healing anyone her S1 hit. But most importantly, was this item:

What they don’t tell you there is that “being attacked” essentially just means “taking damage”. It doesn’t have to actually come from an enemy, so hostile environments such as poisonous mist will give your defender the 2 SP every single time they take damage from it (constantly). With these two items, Gummy became more capable a medic than I could’ve asked. Nobody went down unless they were outside of her range, which meant that Schwarz and Meteor were capable of solo handling the two middle lanes without anyone other than Gummy to block. This is how the level ended.

To love someone is to commit to the grief of losing them. Fourteen years of missing laundry, from basket to backyard. You greet me at the door with your teeth, wrapped around yesterday’s blouse. You carry a piece of us with you, a prompt to follow, Your steps tap-dancing a metronome onto hardwood, That old familiar rhythm. The house feels empty without your song. I look for you around corners, the bed lays empty and unmade.  No one dares take up the space where we said goodbye.

When you passed, it was peaceful. No sound, no sight, no pain.  Only the tender reassurance that you were,  and always would be, loved. 

In the final moments you closed and opened your eyes one last time. The face of G-d staining your retina, as he welcomed you into his arms.

Ancient warriors interred their dogs like humans, with every honor heaped in their name.  As you march the silent pathways of death, know that you walk along with them, remembered as you were: family.
