It's fascinating to me that for our modern (at least on European-influenced societies) thinking, the classical Roman way of life is so familiar. When you read about it, the rethoric of the speeches feels modern, a society based on contracts and laws and litigation, with public works, a state bureucracy and standing army and trade economy and even spectator sports, a concept of philosophy separated from religious dogma and tradition, with even a limited understanding of a government by 'the people' and 'citizenship', even the names all sound familiar even if in completely different contexts, and no wonder since they inspired our current politics.
This all in contrast to medieval feudalism, which is completely alien to me. A society created upon family connections and oaths of fealty and serfdom with no such thing as an overarching state, not even kingdoms were any more real than a title one person holds, and all held together completely, utterly, to an extent I cannot emphasize enough, by the institution of the Church and the Christian faith. In a way we just aren't used today in our secular world. I simply cannot overstate how everything, every single thing, was permeated by faith in the Medieval worldview and the Church which took its power from it, we have an understanding of it but I think people just don't realize it.

some characters from Greek mythology
Tumblr media
Welchanos - a young god of vegetation and fertility in Crete. Welchanos was associated with agrarian magic, with the vegetation cycle and seasonal death, and with the rebirth of nature.
Xanthus - an immortal horse. Achilles' charioteer Automedon once chided Xanthus and Balius for leaving Patroclus behind on the battle field and would that they did not leave behind Achilles as well. Xanthus, given the ability of speech by Hera, turned its head reproachfully and told Achilles that this time they would save him but that his day of doom was nigh, by the decree of inexorable destiny, which also caused Patroclus' death.
Xenodice - "Fair to Strangers." Heracles killed her along with her father. She fell in love with Heracles, but died of grief because she could not be his. When Heracles came to her funeral he had to be restrained from throwing himself on her funeral pyre.
Zacynthus - the first man to sail across to the island to establish a colony.
Zetes - along with his brother, Calais, are called the Boreades, and are generally described as winged beings, though some say that they had wings at their heads and feet, and others that they had them only at their feet, or at their shoulders.

i actually am like immensely grateful for having been able to talk about my experiences with mormonism with people on tumblr like i am so serious i pretty much moved to utah as soon as i had mostly deconstructed mormonism (and then it was paradoxically like i was even more immersed in the culture aspect of it after leaving the religious part) so i didn’t really get to be around people who were separate enough from things to like. listen to stuff about how i grew up and acknowledge how crazy a lot of it is. at college people did react with shock to a lot of things (which i needed) but it felt exploitative, and most importantly it felt like people didn’t have the nuance to understand why i still have a close relationship with my parents even though they are still mormon and i’m not. i feel like people on here actually listen. love u all!!!

doing work for a more equitable and just world, especially in times like these where fascism, hate, and christian nationalism are extreme, is exhausting. yet we are called to do that work. i think as christians, we especially must be about the work, not only because we model ourselves after Christ, though that is key, but also because those who profess Christ often do this harm and do it in God's name. i share this scripture with you from Doctrine and Covenants 157: 16-17 (RLDS/CofChrist)
[Sec 157:16a] In the many places where you are called to labor, the forces of darkness and destruction are active indeed, and seem to hold sway. Your hearts are burdened by the magnitude of the tasks that are yours in bringing the light of my gospel into such darkness. [Sec 157:16b] Nevertheless, I have heard your prayers when you have cried out to me, and I have been with you in the places where you occupy. I am aware of your desires to serve me and my assurance is that as you go forth, your offerings of faith and service are acceptable to me. [Sec 157:17] In all your efforts, therefore, continue to trust in my grace and respond in love to the leadings of my Spirit. If you will come before me in unity and love I will bless you with a great outpouring of compassion, both for one another and for the world into which you are sent. Amen.
I want to clarify that the work we do and the light of the gospel includes showing loving and defending our transgender and undocumented neighbors. it includes supporting those in need of liberation, such as Palestinians, Congolese, Sudanese, and others through means of advocacy, donations, boycotts, listening to them and amplifying their voices. it includes addressing racism when you see it and when you don't, even when it's uncomfortable. it means inviting people into community and sharing with them the love of Christ, without expecting or pushing for their conversion. Love is active, and I believe this (and much more) is what God calls us to do.
and through all of this, God is with us. We must put our trust in God, and that gives us hope for the future. it's okay if you don't feel hope right now too. it is not a failing on your part. i often feel hopeless, but my faith gives me optimism that can help pull me out of that hole. God has compassion for us, and we reflect this compassion to those around us and those far away from us. we are not meant to, and cannot do, the work alone, and we must form communities where we have compassion for one another. we deserve, and need to, experience this active love ourselves.

For every person I unfollow with weird opinions on jews, I follow a few other jews instead. This has been for the better, even if I was bitter about hitting the "unfollow" button at first (sound off if you want to use this post to self-promo)

Hi Avery! You may remember me from "my church is going on its RIC journey" several years ago! Covid set us back but we've made some progress with enacting inclusivity in our building, including participation in our city's Pride, officially naming two gender neutral bathrooms (i worked SO hard for this), celebrating RIC Sunday, and slowly starting a Faith and Diversity section in our library!
I wanted to ask though - the affirming committee (which I'm on) wants to include some resources on our church website for brand new allies who may know little to nothing about the LGBTQ+ community! Things like definitions, explanations of pronouns... I wanted to know if you had any advice or suggestions for places I could look, for both super basic resources and ones with a Christian lens!
Thank you so much for all you do!! - Moth
Oh hey, I do remember you; so glad to hear from you again! <3
Thank you for your part in moving your church further into affirmation. I know how frustrating such work can get, especially because it tends to move so slowly; but it is good and holy work, and what you've done and continue to do for your church matters so much.
First, I imagine you're already aware of it but just in case, Reconciling Works has its own webpage of resources, including basic definitions. Definitely makes sense to link some of those!
See this post for my recommendations for some queer Christian resources mostly related to sexuality. One of them, the Queer Grace Encyclopedia, is a database both of basic queer definitions and theology. You'll find a lot of great, simple but well-researched articles on there!
Next, I've got a Google doc masterpost of basic trans stuff, including pronoun practice and how to apologize gracefully when you accidentally misgender someone. I don't recommend passing the whole doc along to your church because Too Many Links gets overwhelming, but if you wander through you can pick out the resources you think they'd find most helpful!
I also have a Google doc of Christian-specific trans stuff; I recommend similarly that you pick out just a few to pass on for the church site. Especially some links from the Transmission Ministry Network :)
Posting this so others can add recommendations!

ok. i have a question. this is maybe insane.
i want to do volunteer work focused on homeless outreach (providing resources etc) but the only secular organizations doing this work in my city have limited volunteer hours that dont align with my schedule literally at all. the only options available to me are through church-affiliated groups.
as im sure you can imagine, i dont like churches! i dont want to work with them! and i dont like when homeless outreach comes with a side of evangelism. BUT. is it worthwhile to volunteer anyway? is it better to provide food and resources in the name of christ than not at all?
my gut says yes, but my experience as a person who was on the receiving end of that shit says no... idk! i welcome your thoughts

Statement of Beliefs #1
A Commitment to Knowledge and Transparency
The Church of the Atom stands in direct opposition to secrecy. We believe that knowledge—especially knowledge that preserves life and protects future generations—must be shared, not hoarded. Our mission is not to guard sacred truths for a select few, but to ensure that the wisdom of the Atom is carried forward by all who seek it.
We affirm the following:
Knowledge Must Be Open and Accessible
The dangers of radiation and nuclear waste are not mysteries to be kept, but facts to be understood. We reject any notion of secrecy and embrace the free sharing of knowledge.
Preservation Over Obfuscation
The greatest danger to future generations is not knowing. Our role is to ensure that the warnings of today are legible, comprehensible, and enduring for all who come after us.
Education is a Sacred Duty
It is not enough to record warnings; we must teach them. Our sermons, writings, and discussions exist to educate, to prepare, and to empower, ensuring that the knowledge of nuclear dangers is never lost.
Priesthood, Not Gatekeepers
The Church of the Atom does not believe in gatekeeping knowledge. While we may have those who dedicate themselves to the study and transmission of nuclear semiotics, they are guides and teachers, not rulers. Knowledge is for all.
A Warning for the Ages
We work to ensure that future generations, regardless of language or culture, will recognize the symbols and messages that warn of nuclear danger. Our commitment is to clarity, not obscurity.
The Church of the Atom is an experiment in long-term thinking. If our message lasts 10,000 years, the world will be better for it. If it does not, then at least we will have shared useful knowledge in our lifetime. We do not demand faith—only understanding. We do not seek power—only preservation.
We do not hide knowledge. We illuminate it.

How can AI tools change the way the church functions?
Have you wondered if churches could use AI to improve their function? Churches traditionally offer Sunday masses and prayer sessions in their prayer halls, but recently, that has changed. Churches have become digital, and services are getting live-streamed. AI has revolutionized the church by providing them a mode to connect with the congregation members and bring in new members.
AI is helping the church to create new strategies, find creative ways to reach the community, and foster growth. Although AI cannot replace human warmth and passion, it has shown the potential to be a powerful tool to manage and optimize various administrative works.
The AI church platform offers various tools to help your church communicate and post updates of upcoming events and announcements both internally and externally. Let’s discuss some tools that churches can use.
Tumblr media
AI-powered tools and their function:
AI chat:
It is a tool that is designed to enhance the way church members and staff interact with each other. AI chat is designed to be user-friendly and can communicate documents such as event notifications, policy manuals, minutes of meetings, etc. It facilitates quick, short communication between users. Key features of an AI file chat are:
Content rewriting and enhancement features
Effortless uploads and Editing features
Secure document handling
Worship planner:
This includes tools that can help your church plan things for events such as a Sunday mass by planning worship songs, managing sermons, and selecting scripture and other church announcements. Key features of the tools are
Capacity to sync with devices during live performance
Instantly upload and manage song
Seamlessly planning among the members.
AI brand voice:
Creating a brand voice will allow you to set a distinct benchmark for your church. It allows your church to align its messages to different target audiences for maximum resonance. You can also easily modify the voice or change the language to match the content and audience. Key features include:
Multiple brand profiles suit the needs of the audience.
User-friendly customization
Database management:
A church is made up of its community, and those are the people who visit to volunteer, worship, and donate. Having a record and contact information of the people who contribute to the service can greatly benefit the community when in need.
Advertising and social media management:
Using a social media platform to communicate your services and promote your church can be an efficient way to bring in new people and network with outside communities. Using an AI tool to post on multiple platforms and manage interactions can give a big boost to your church. It allows
Allows you to easily manage multiple social media platforms
Instant posting across multiple platforms.
Conclusion
Earlier, a pastor or church leader had to perform all the works of the ministry by themselves, giving them limited time to devote their efforts to creating stronger connections in the community. With new AI tools, the church has the opportunity to automate most of the routine work to engage with the congregants on a deeper level.
By introducing AI church solutions, the experience of churchgoers can be significantly enhanced. An online church presence can allow members to view announcements, programs, prayer, and worship sessions apart from church timings. If you want to learn about the different AI services available to your church, you may visit the AI Church Assistant.
