She blinked. Once, twice. Then, blue eyes narrowed into a glare and she took off her gardening gloves to swap them for her regular gloves. Taking the moment to not address the wrong ice mage's sudden appearance in her presence, she surveilled the work she had been doing in the guild garden and deemed it satisfactory.
Tumblr media
"Okay," she said as she levelled her stare at Gray, "why are you suddenly coming out of the shadows?" Aren't you supposed to be somewhere in the mountains right about now?

so. things were . . . mildly not ideal. there was a gash on her side and her coat might be ruined. and she should care more about the former than about the latter. but she did not. flesh would knit itself back together. getting the coat fixed, on the other hand, would be an entire thing. more important than either gash or coat was, of course, that she was running low on time. she had completed her job---one of her rare solo jobs---and she had killed the beast she had been contracted to handle, but she could feel the weather change.
this was bad. very bad. bad for her, even.
her coat would hold off some of the cold, sure, but this felt like a storm. she was not too keen on the gamble, if she was honest. it would be different if someone from her team was around---she always felt comfortable to take the gamble with them around, simply because she knew that they would cover her bet the same way she covered theirs.
her gloved hand grasped a branch as she stopped for a moment, catching her breath. she had seen a little village when she had first arrived. she had wound up on the wrong side of the mountain, anyway---and with a storm coming, she would be a fool to try to head back for the side of the mountain she had come from. carena was many things. a fool was not one of them.
Tumblr media
pushing herself away from the tree, she forced herself to keep moving, despite the pain. she would manage. she somehow always did. she just . . . had to put one foot in front of the other. as long as she would manage that for maybe ten more minutes, she would be okay. she would rather like to be okay. this was beneath her, in some ways.
step, wince, pause. rinse, repeat. step, wince, pause.
she was making okay-ish time, she decided. she had almost reached the path that led to the other mountain village, the one that had not hired her. their loss, really, she huffed as she pushed herself to keep moving. it would be all right for a moment of rest, she decided. maybe they had a healer, someone who could bandage her up well enough.
step, wince, pause. rinse, repeat. step, wince, pause.
this time, she did not pause because the pain had knocked the air out of her lungs. no. she was---confused. she did not like being confused, did not find it to be very enjoyable. still--- '' i don't think i lost enough blood to hallucinate, '' she said because at the end of the day, she had to get a few words in, no matter how weird the situation was. '' gray? ''

Olexa: For most of her life she admired those in Fairy Tail. As someone who grew up in Magnolia the guild was looked up by a lot of the kids in town. She particularly looked up to Mirajane, who would come to her parents music shop from time to time. Olexa was not allowed out of the house / shop often, so Mira was the only member she would actually interact with. Most customers tended to ignore her as she was an incredibly quiet child, however Mira made sure to always greet her the rare chances they interacted. It might not have meant anything to the other, but it left an impression on Olexa.
Lately the girl has found new role models, and possible mentors. Dorian and Evie, two very skilled mages who both carry talents in the fields that overlap with her own magic. They have peaked her interest, which isn't something that happens often with her.
Tumblr media
Rayne: Growing up there was never anyone in specific she would look up to. She liked reading about adventures of mages and thought about how nice it would be to learn magic and join a guild. However none one pulled her interest in the sense of "I would like to be like them". That was until the Grand Magic Games aired and she saw her own sister across the screen.
She does her best to keep from crossing the line of being inspired by Juvia, and appearing like she is copying her. So much so when she first joined the guild she didn't give her last name, although it was joked about how much her and Juvia looked alike (her outfits at the time didn't help). Now that it is out there in the open she cares less and proudly talks about her admiration for the other.
Tumblr media
Juvia: In her case, it is less of a role model, and more as just someone who helps her keep going, Gray. Of course he caught her eyes at first in a romantic manner, but the admiration changed as she got to know him better. He became more than just the person that opened up her skies, turning into a mage she wished to emulate. He was not just strong, but kind and caring. Coming from Phantom Lord she wasn't exposed to.
Erza is also someone she can admire. It is surprising she holds the same title as someone that powerful.

Preface: For a creature that has caused tremendous trauma to a main character, there is very little that is actually known about Deliora beyond the demon being from the Book of Zeref and the fact that Ur was instrumental in ending the reign of terror. This headcanon is an attempt to give a logic and a motive to what is canonically a rather random chain of events, almost like a natural disaster rather than something done by a sentient creature. As so often, this headcanon is inspired by conversations I have had with others, in this case @resolvebound. I genuinely like the idea that all the seemingly random threads that all somehow connect to Zeref actually connect in a manner that makes at least a bit of sense.
It was not possible for anyone to really track and then hunt down the demon because there was a handler of sorts, someone who would summon the demon when there was 'work' to do and who would otherwise be able to travel incognito. This handler, of course, was a rather human looking demon associated with Tartarus, someone who had been given the page of the book Deliora was sealed into and was told to attack a series of cities and villages along the northern borders of Fiore, occasionally also attacking select locations outside of Fiore*.
While at the time, it seemed like Deliora's attacks were entirely random and lacked any sense, there was an underlying theme, a pattern: all cities targetted by the demon possessed some sort of resource, whether that was knowledge or rare materials that could be mined. The idea of the attacks being entirely random was due to no two cities having the same resources and at the time, the context of the attacks was unknown. Additionally, the cities were entirely destroyed so it was not apparent at the time that the resources were being taken.
Rare materials were needed by the cult of Zeref as Deliora's rampage falls together with the construction of the infamous Tower of Heaven. Additionally, the cult was also kidnapping and enslaving people to work at the construction site. For some people who survived the demon's attack, a horrible fate awaited them when what at first glance appeared to be salvation was actually a trap.
Criteria that were typically met by cities and other locations attacked by Deliora:
the city has no major fortification (see: walls, magical defenses, etc)
in a similar vein, the cities were typically not home to a (noteworthy) wizard guild
the location is a major supplier of a rare resource (ores, lacrima, etc)
the location is relatively isolated and even if a distress call is made, it would take too long for any help to actually arrive
the city has its own registration office, meaning that once the city is destroyed and the office with it, it becomes difficult for eventual relief efforts to really know how many people have been in the city at the time of the attack, which in turn made it easy to 'disappear' some of the survivors
of course, some larger cities may not have been hit for their individual economical resources but because they were rich in inhabitants
As she is very intelligent and excels at thinking outside the box, Ur was able to predetermine some potential targets after she realised that all previously attacked locations had the resource 'theme' in common. She consequently came across Gray because she had been on the way to his hometown to alert the people of the looming danger. What the resource in Gray's hometown was may depend on the individual portrayal, but suffice to say, due to being summoned rather than needing to travel overland, Deliora beat her to the city and destroyed it.
Tumblr media
*I have elaborated on why I do not think that Deliora's rampage happened far away from Fiore on another blog, but the basis is that all characters that we know tp have some connection to the demon somehow wound up in Fiore and it is wildly implausible that an eight year old child would have been able to travel all the way to Magnolia without having been stopped by some country's CPS along the way.

lucy was hyping herself up, it was the best way to go about things, really. it was her first solo quest in…huh. it was … her first solo quest. she decided the butterflies in her stomach were more for excitement than nerves. natsu was hellbent (too soon?) on rebuilding and…she couldn’t fault him. she knew it wasn’t his fault but he could be stubborn. and gray was. well. she didn’t know. and erza— no! this was a lucy solo! she will do fine and be fine! she was a strong celestial spirit mage and she had some new tricks up her sleeve and the quest was more research focused over in delphinium city. it was perfect for her (and levy, she missed levy suddenly, with a pang).
but lucy would do this! and she will succeed!
she settled in her train compartment, nothing too fancy but it was nice enough. her bag was on her lap and lucy leaned her head against the window as she waited for the train to depart. her fingers tapped on her lap, it was an old tune to a song she hadn’t listened to for a while. maybe she should pick up a music lacrima soon. it felt like a decade since she had enjoyed a nice song.
as the train whistled, lucy could hear the sounds of people outside her compartment door. her eyes kept flickering from the magnolia scenery to the door, hoping perhaps for company — for anything. and yet, when the train began to move there was nothing. lucy let out a sigh.
wait a minute. there was no reason for this! a bright smile filled her face and lucy’s hand went to her side and grabbed where her keys were. with a finger holding the end, lucy willed the door of the lion to open.
Tumblr media
“leo!” her smile was bright, her eyes no longer flinching at the now familiar bright light of regulus. “i hope you weren’t busy.”

betrayal.  no,  worse than that.  treason.  arlo was violating the sacred bonds of cousinhood because he was not just eating all of gray’s food,  no,  he was happily munching on the limited edition cheese gray had been saving for a special occasion.  ‘ ‘ arlo --- c’mon,  dude,  this isn’t cool, ’ ’  gray complained as he crossed his arms over his chest.  ‘ ‘ leave some for me? ’ ’

Sherry nodded. She had known Carolina for a very long time and she had known for many years that the older woman took a lot of pride in her work. "Yes," she said as she unlocked the shed to put away the tools she had used earlier, "I am just happy that she can focus on something that exists purely for her enjoyment again. She has been tasked with growing medicinal herbs quite often lately and . . . she is not exactly young anymore. I was worried, almost."
Almost because while the marionette mage had no interest in knowing what, exactly, the dynamic between her guild master and the treasurer was best described as, she did know that they were close---and she knew that Ooba Babasama suffered neither fools nor people who tried to take advantage of her mages. Sherry's guild master was abrasive and not always nice, but it was a mistake to believe that niceness equalled kindness. And this was a fact Sherry could rely on---which she did. She was glad to know that Master Ooba would spike someone's drink with poison if it meant to protect her mages.
Tumblr media
Leading Gray away from the garden and towards the city, she kept her hands clasped in front of her body. "We can start at the bookstore," she said, doing her utmost to sound conversational. "There is a book that came out yesterday---it is titled Tales from Saltmire Harbour---and it is written by an author Lyon usually enjoys."
It was a collection of short stories that were all set in the same (fictional) city, and though Sherry preferred a good novel, she had to say that if one was reading a book on the train on the way to a job, it was sometimes useful to be able to finish the story before the job properly commenced. Being stuck on a cliffhanger was never fun, but it was particularly unpleasant if focus was crucial for survival.
She would have been content to walk in unshattered silence, but that would look strange to the people that surrounded them---and Sherry had made pleasant smalltalk with people that she had actively wished would trip down stairs. "Did you eat?" she asked. "Because if not, we can take a break at the café and get a snack before continuing the search."
The day was not a particularly cold one, and he wasn’t exerting any of his magic, nor were there any sort of weather changing devices around, yet anyone who might come by him and Sherry now…well, it might just feel as if any wrong move or word would shatter the air between them as if it were delicate ice. Gray frowned as he caught her soft words, an instinctive defensiveness rising within his chest, along with confusion that momentarily twitched his eyebrows into a deeper furrow. Issues? Oh…yeah, that. He didn’t want to get into it either. He might have (silently) forgiven her (not that she really needed it, it wasn’t her fault after all), and might now even relate to her experience, but…she was right, it wasn’t what he was here for.
Out of habit, he folded his arms across his chest as he regarded her, frown remaining in place. She had plans. It put a sort of time limit on their time together, which could be a good thing, yet did add pressure to finding a suitable gift while they had the chance. She made a good point too, about if he were to settle on something that needed customising, it was best to get started on it as soon as possible. Once again, he considered the fact that she was willing to stop what she was doing in order to help him, even despite his sudden (likely unwelcome) appearance. Was she just a good person? Or was it because he was there to do something for Lyon? After a moment, he decided it really didn’t matter.
He gave a nod of acceptance as she readied herself and spoke again. Clearly, she was prepared to give up part of her day now. He’d given her an out, and that’s all he could do. Even with that in mind, a level of discomfort continued to squirm low in his stomach, but perhaps that was not strictly related to a sense of guilt at his intrusion.
His gaze shifted to the garden, glad for the distraction. Carolina the treasurer, huh? Now that he thought about it, did Fairy Tail have a treasurer? Maybe it was something Mira did. He supposed he hadn’t paid attention to things like that before. Not that it mattered to him anymore anyway.
Tumblr media
“Plant magic is pretty cool,” he said, simply for something to say, as he became aware of his awkward silence. It wasn’t a lie, however; he did admire such magic. And because he continued to feel like he should speak, he added, “The garden’s nice.”
Inwardly kicking himself for his lame attempts at conversation, he tugged distractedly at his clothes and very much wished for the entire encounter to be over with already. “Uh, so…ready to go then? Lead the way.”

"Hey, hold still for a sec." that was the only real warning Gray gave before he cupped her face in both of his hands. Peering close, he studied her eyes and features, and even gently turned her head from side to side. After a few long moments, he released her and nodded to himself in apparent satisfaction.
Tumblr media
Carena had a vague idea of what she looked like when she studied statues because Laxus had once pointed out how awed she was by the craftsmanship, no matter how many other statues she had seen. No matter how many people she had temporarily turned into statues. And really, who could fault her? Anyone who could make solid marble imitate the gentle . . . flow of silk was a master of their craft and deserved her acknowledgement and praise.
She understood why she looked at art like that---fascinated and curious in equal amounts, inspired and focused---and why she could spend quite a bit of time studying artworks. And, yes, sometimes, she regarded people with a similar gaze, usually when she actually had enough time to make her own sculptures---or when she had to burn someone's face into her mind for a job. And maybe, just maybe, she had studied Gray with a similar gaze before.
Tumblr media
That said---she could not remember when she had been on the receiving end of this gaze. Ah well. A good artist, she supposed, always looked for inspiration. And just maybe, this thought caused her cheeks to develop a soft rosy hue.
The sudden touch had been a surprise, but she had not flinched. If there was one thing her Stone Eyes could always be counted on when she found herself in an uncomfortable situation. And this was not an uncomfortable situation.
She waited for a few moments, then her lips curled into a lazy smile. "I hope you aren't going to tell me that I have spinach in my teeth," she said. "I've been out and about for quite a bit since lunch . . . my reputation might never recover."

It had been a long night (and a long day too)- both of researching and problem solving. Their various books and items were scattered around them as they sat on the couch in her apartment. Gray had been struggling to suppress yawns for some time now and it seemed he had finally succumbed to the beckoning of sleep. Slowly, he slumped over, falling against her shoulder, exhaustion pulling him down and resting his head on her. (apartment AU teheheh)
Tumblr media
Four of her fingers were sporting colourful bandaids as it seemed like every book she touched was starved for blood today. The text that she was trying to read kept blurring in front of her eyes for the last few minutes (okay, for the last two hours). She kept trying to push herself, determined to find some kind of answer somewhere in the books they had been consulting as reference material, but it did not seem like she was being particularly successful.
Next to her, Gray seemed to struggle as well---he had been yawning in increasingly small intervals for a while now, the caffeine from the tea she had made earlier losing the fight against exhaustion and the late hour. She could not blame him. She was hearing the siren song of a nap as well.
Her glasses had long been discarded, not long after they had first arrived at her apartment. It had been cold outside and they had fogged up the moment she had unlocked her apartment door. For all the troubles the apartment building had, the heating was usually working well. And the rare times it acted up, Freed's cousin was on top of the situation and fixing it within the hour. As far as Carena was concerned, Flare had more than earned all the cookies she was given for her troubles.
Softly---she did not want to wake Gray---closing the book that had been mocking her, Carena decided that yes, she could close her eyes for a moment. For maybe five minutes. Just long enough for the letters to stop dancing across the page when she returned to work. Just five minutes, then she would gently wake Gray who seemed to have nodded off and they could decide if it was worth pushing themselves any further or if they should call it a night. She shifted just enough in her seat to give Gray's neck a fighting chance to not hurt once he woke up again.
She carefully reached for a blanket and somehow managed to tuck herself in just a bit before her conciousness blurred into the strangest of dreams.

❛  it says couples only ... let's say we're dating and we'll get in.  ❜ - Gray
Tumblr media
Her boots had been supposed to be waterproof. The salesfairy at her favourite store had been jubilant as she had explained all the benefits to Carena, how the enchantment was advanced, how it would keep her feet warm and dry without creating a climate that would turn her feet into something closely related to cheese. The sales pitch had worked, Carena had bought the shoes. And they had been great, had lived up to all the promises---until today. And as she miserably shuffled down the alleyway, following her colleague, Carena was trying to figure out what had happened. Why her feet were wet.
They had almost reached the corner by the time it hit her---the enchantment. The shoes had been so great because of the enchantment. And their research trip had taken her to a place where magic had been cut off. She remembering thinking how strange and hollow her veins feeled, right about the moment when she had stepped into the puddle.
Inwardly, she groaned. But at the same time, it was good to understand what had happened. It also meant that once they were in a more magical-rich environment, the enchantment would recharge and sort itself out. She just needed to wait. Only that patience was a difficult sentiment to come by while her socks were drenched. She did not think that her feet actually made squeaking noises as she kept walking, but she sure felt like her steps were nowhere as quiet as usually.
Mentally still scolding herself for her lack of caution, she almost would have missed Gray's remark, but the word "dating" immediately caused her to focus on their surroundings again. For a split second, she thought that maybe, he had gossip. Then, the full sentence reached her conscious mind and immediately, her little shoe problem was forgotten.
Right, they were near the café. And she had been bemoaning the fact that she was much too busy to check out the new milkshakes for about four days now. What she, despite her interest in the milkshakes, had not been aware of was that apparently, some of the special flavours were only available in the special couple promotion. She gritted her teeth, frustration written across her face. This was why it was a bad idea to let a swarm of love sprites run a restaurant or similar business. They enjoyed their calling a bit too much, she thought.
But Gray's suggestion---it could work. And she really felt like they deserved the treat after the mess they had handled earlier. And even if this little excursion meant that a group of sprites would think that she was dating her colleague, well, there were worse things, right?
"Yes, let's do it," she said as she pondered whether or not offering him her hand would be too much. Probably not, she decided as she extended it towards him. Carena had been in her school's theatre group, she could play pretend for an hour or so if it meant that she got her milkshake. "My roommate's cousin went with her girlfriend and she said that they tried the Raspberry Sunset and that it was like floating on clouds. And maybe we can get some waffles, too."

A moment of softness. Of his hand slowly rising to gently tuck a loose lock of her hair back from her face, while his eyes hold her own. Of his hand then skimming the backs of his fingers down along the curve of her cheek and jaw in a whisper-soft touch, his gaze falling to her lips. A delicate guiding of his finger beneath her chin to tilt her head back. A moment of fondness, warmth shown in his expression and the slight upward curve to the corner of his lips. A moment of suspended time and his head slowly lowering towards hers. A kiss upon her cheek, so very close to her lips. A moment of softness indeed. A dream.
Tumblr media
there had been a rule since carena had been a young child, she preferred to sleep on her side, one leg pulled towards her chest just a little. this level of . . . peacefulness was not always easy to reach for her these days, but there were times when she got lucky. when sleep was easy, when sleep was not a cavern filled with hauntings. still---she had always been someone who dreamt. not always someone who remembered those dreams upon waking---and perhaps, sometimes, that was for the better.
. . .
because really, she would not know how to handle dreams like this. she was someone who prided herself in being---maybe not calculating, but like most people who had been born with a power that was dangerous without needing much refinement, carena knew the importance of keeping herself in check. she had slipped when she had been younger, but---thankfully never in a way that had endangered someone else. she always doubted that she would be even remotely as well-adjusted if she had harmed another person when she had been young. her father had taught her control, and this had worked because he had had the very same---ability.
( she did not like people who looked at her eyes and called them a gift, she knew the family history, she knew that work had originally gone into this. )
the point being--- throughout her waking hours, carena was attempted to be the embodiment of self-control. however, like most people, she could not hope to have the same level of control over her . . . dreams. and so forgetting most of her dreams, even the nice ones, was a mercy. probably.
. . .
if she would remember, if she would remember that she dreamt of walking down the road near the river while holding hands, she would probably evaporate from the sheer force of her blush the second she saw gray the next time.
