haikaveh... save me haikaveh...
i KNOW it's been talked about to death but. the haikaveh research project. it literally haunts my mind. i cannot get over the implications. alhaitham going through his school life as someone that most people dont even really know about because he keeps to himself and doesn't socialize, with kaveh being the one exception to that, finding his way into his life as his Best Friend, and then leading to alhaithams one and only time he participated in a research topic. his bio says he only ever did ONE joint project!!! one!!! the one with kaveh his best friend and i think also his only friend at the time!!!! and then it ended in not only the project falling apart but also alhaithams only friendship. kavehs best friendship. they were each others closest person. they had no family around - alhaithams parents having died when he was young and his grandmother dying before he joined the akademiya, and kaveh's dad dying when he was young and his mom having moved to fontaine. like even if you dont look at it through a romantic lens it's still undeniable how important they were [and are] to each other..........
i'm getting off track but my point is very specifically for alhaitham, the one time he got close to someone, made a friend, even agreed to join one(1) group project ever, it ended in disaster. it led him into a fight so bad that his one and only friend said he regretted that friendship!!!! it was so bad alhaitham left the project and he and kaveh didnt speak for ages until they just happened to run into each other again at the tavern!!!!! like obviously it has to be incredibly awful for both of them but i just think how this probably had alhaitham in the cynical mindset that friendships and collaborations like that might just never work out for him because the one time he let someone into his life, it blew up on him and he was all alone again. even though alhaitham never seems to care much if people dont like him, that clearly cant still apply to someone he was exceptionally close to. like if he didnt care he woudlnt have been the one to take his name off the project and mutually not speak to kaveh...... kavehs words are the ones that hit the most significantly to alhaitham.......... kaveh is said/implied to have had at least some other friends while at school / people knew who he was, but not so much alhaitham. people didnt know him and the ones that did just knew he didnt socialize/he was not easy to get along with. he only had kaveh and then, for a while, he lost him too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

okay i know you are on the same shack scene agenda as me and i need to dissect it even more so please tell me your thoughts about what remus is thinking/feeling when he sees peter on the map and decides to go after sirius 👀
What do we know? He finds out Peter is alive and he immediately finds it highly suspicious - nobody casually fakes their death after all. He goes straight to the willow and on his way he tries to make sense of it all. He knows that whatever he believed/was told is at least questionable. And the way through the tunnel is long so he has time to think.
I believe that Remus figured out what happened in October 1981 - more or less - the moment he entered the shack. When he asks how it is possible that Peter is alive, he is thinking out loud. He already went through every possibility, checking how probable each one was in the context of what was happening in the last couple months of the war and then he comes to the conclusion - you switched - and he is sure there is no other option. So when Sirius - who’s words he shouldnt really have any reasons to trust* - nods, he doesnt question it at all and gets straight to business to murder the rat.
*That is, assuming he truly and fully believed Sirius to be the traitor.
I like to think that it took quite long for him to accept it and that it was mostly due to Dumbledore convincing him. He has no reason to doubt Dumbledore - and Dumbledore has no reason to think what he knows isn’t the whole truth - but what Dumbledore says doesnt make any sense (and even Rosmerta agrees!). But even if he doubs his words he has no means of going against him or proving him wrong so for the sake of his own sanity he has to accept it.
And even then - when he was told Sirius was responsible for all those murders - he didnt think he deserved the Dementors Kiss. And we know that he holds James and Lily (especially James) in high regard and how much their friendship, support and acceptance meant for him bc of his childhood. Yet he is very quick to murder Peter - not even waiting for the kids to leave the scene jesus christ remus - when they find out he was the traitor. Yes, the point of his question for Harry about the Kiss was to show that it’s fate worse than death but come on - in front of my salad the kids?
Also Im not sure what to make out of his excuse of not telling dumbledore about the map/secret passages - that he convinced himself Sirius was using tricks he was taught by Voldemort and also that he is Dumbeldore’s doormat. Its a very very poor excuse and. couldnt he just. show him an opened map and point to the secret passages and say they should be blocked/guarded? say he found this mysterious artifact of unspecified origins somewhere in the castle? anyways for me it doesnt make much sense until we consider that he had this thought - about sirius potentially maybe not being guilty - at the back of his head. maybe even subconsciously at this point.
that or he was very gay for sirius.
also I forgot to take my shipping goggles off, shit, my bad.
I would love to hear your thoughts though, they happen to make more sense than mine >.<"

this scene makes me insane for so many reasons... i love the confirmation that jerott is attracted to lymond (which we knew but i love seeing it directly!), and here it almost seems that lymond is aware of that attraction and is using it so jerott doesn't see right through him. which is something he would only do if he were desperate, and he was.
there is in checkmate a sort of one-sided, fragile intimacy to their dynamic, that can only exist because lymond is so vulnerable he can't control his emotions, and jerott is there. in a graphic where each point reads right person/wrong person/right time/wrong time, i feel like these scenes could be put anywhere and it would be true.
there's also something else, and it's that jerott struggles so much with his emotions towards francis when francis is at his most composed and clinical; and it's in these unguarded, painful moments when jerott allows his true feelings to show. he touches francis's hair and skin; looks at his fingers, at touching distance; holds francis tightly as he shivers. a level of intimacy neither of them would tolerate in normal circumstances, but excuse in a vacuum, and is never talked about after.
jerott is practically always mentioned at the same time as lymond's other officers (adam, danny, alec) during checkmate, as if the dynamic between the two is the same that lymond has with those other men. but there's more to them, the brilliant, shadowed affinity jerott has hoped for since they were teenagers, fighting together

thinking also about the lines "ephael, get them!"/"uh... okay. (zooms towards the enemy despite the hesitance in his voice)" (toy mansion) and "ephael, why aren't you protecting your weak supporter!" (snow queen) and ephael seamlessly backing hestio up when he falters (reunion).
☝️methinks that hestio is this bossy and demanding firstly bc he's just like that and secondly bc ephael has enabled him all his life by meeting him wherever he stands. hestio has never really needed to be nicer to his friends because they both have the patience of saints. hestio is a little spoiled. he doesn't even have aura.

you, a fool: I liked that in the Daisy Jones & the Six book Daisy and Billy don’t physically cheat, because it meant Billy wasn’t actually cheating on his wife and being a bad person and husband and they had enough shame about their feelings I could sympathize with them falling in love at the wrong time. The show ruined that for me because they smooch flirt and forehead touch and it’s wrong and gross to me then and I can’t root for them.
me, an intellectual: I liked that in the Daisy Jones & the Six book Daisy and Billy don’t physically cheat because I think it’s super entertaining to read about straight people who are really really repressed and yearn in unhinged ways, it’s both funny to me that they want each other that bad but will never bang and a deeply compelling recipe for angst and pining and sublimating into music which I really really dig miserable doomed almost romances we love you! However the show while making the relationship a little bit more physical compared with the book (but they still don’t bang) still very much delivered on the unhinged pining and yearning and emotional repression and sublimating and general energy I wanted combined with Riley & Sam’s incredible, and incredibly perfect for this type of love-hate-yearn dynamic, chemistry, so I still loved them in the show! Also any form of cheating is morally wrong and disrespects you partner btw I just am fine with liking it anyway.
