Animal Crossing Au! that i’m starting
After a while of playing Animal Crossing, i watched a video with the premise of “what if i went back to my original animal crossing world and time still passed while i was gone? And i was like, “that’s sounds interesting” and looked for Animal Crossing fics where they were in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. Seeing that there aren't any, I decided to write one.
So let’s set the stage…
Like in the game, My Time at Portia, this will take place in a country that is owned by wealthy landowners who basically mooch off of the lords of the villages who take care of their villagers. We will name the country, Nookling Junction, owned by the Nook family. Along with this country, they have a company, Nook and Cranny, which enforces villages to pay their mortgages and keep their villagers morale high.
The Cranny family, a bunch of bounty hunters, who keep zombies from reaching villages. You have the option of paying for their services but it costs a lot so it’s kinda just best to convert one after building your defenses.
Leveling
You are settling down in a new settlement inwards of the Junction, a village that you have to name. Based on natural generation and level setting, you can get the following siblings:
Level Zero: (Leisure): Cole and Dottie- this is for the people who just like to go around and collect things, mostly a build-you-town in a dystopian setting mode where you don’t have to worry about zombies
Level One (Easy): Fauna and Erik- everything is built, you just need to fix everything, tend to your villagers, and pay off your debt
Level Two (Default): Isabelle and Digby- you need to build defense, zombies attack at night time, tend to your villagers, and pay off your debt
Level Three (Hard): Tauro and Vivian- random zombie attacks throughout the day, harder to find resources, needs to build defenses and houses, and pay off your debt
Level Four (Expert): Isadore and Mckenzie- start off with nothing but a lot and angry villagers, zombies attacks at random, need to build the whole town, villagers won’t socialize until they feels safe and are more prone to leave, and pay off your debt
Your place in the story…
When you enter the village, these two will be your helpers and guides as well as the only other villagers who know how to combat.
You will be given 8 different villagers, randomly selected in which you can direct to do any kind of job that you want them to do. However this will affect their morale and social standings. As time goes on you can build to have up to 20 villagers, however if certain needs are not met villagers will leave, the lowest number you can have is 2.
The mechanics of the game:
Currency
You will still have Bells as a currency, every month you must gather 3000 bells in order to pay Meow and Bow (who have a redesign that isn’t hideous) who now work as collectors for Tom Nook. If you don’t you will come to find structures broken and things missing in your village in the middle of the night, with a note from Timmy and Tommy saying to “pay up next time”. Each time you do not pay the rent, the more severe it gets.
You can get bells from talking to your villagers, completing tasks, trading with other villagers, village commissions, and by going outside and hunting zombies and other monsters. You can also gain items with the daily gift box that you can shoot from the sky or dig up from the ground.
Morale
Along with Bells, you now get Treats. Treats help raise morale and will be given when achievements are met (like in Minecraft… sorta). You can give treats to villagers when morale gets really low.
Hearts will be the scale of showing your bond with villagers. I think there should be 10 of them. This urges you to interact with villagers, making sure they go up. If you don’t they will go down. Along with Hearts they will have a scale from Angry face to Smiley face (with their being Pouty face, frowny face, blank face, grin face in between) showing their morale. Also, you can have a Heart face which allows you to romance villagers, if you choose. If your villager has anything less than a grin face, their work methods will be altered. Frowny faces result in them not working at all.
You can ask either of your representatives about the morale in your village and ask them to help you defend and raise morale in your village.
Defense
You can now build traps for zombie attacks and upgrade your walls. Zombie attacks are more fierce during night time and less likely to happen during the day. Keep in mind where traps are because they can damage your villagers and you if set off. This will result in your villager getting a frowny or angry face, refusing to work and interact with you for a couple of days.
You can also hire someone from the Cranny Monster Hunter Services, however this will cost you bells. The hunter will be random everytime you pay for the service, the most one can stay is 10 days for 1000 bells. In this time you can interact with them in hopes of converting them into a villager and keeping them in the village.
You can upgrade weapons and suit up your villagers just in case.
Infection and Death
Yes, you read right. Villagers can die! If a villager gets infected by a zombie, they have 3 days to be cured before they die! This interaction is non-negotiable and spawns a headstone that you place and a special character who digs the grave of your villager where the headstone lays. This is an incentive to take care of your city.
You villagers can also starve to death if there is no food. Several days without food is insta-death. Also Angry face for 7 days causes your villager to leave, which may end up with them dying.
The cure for an infection is hard to get but once you get it, luckily it can be farmed in your village.
Interaction
Each character will have generic text options, as well as backstories, ambitions, and even potential relationship options. You can give your villagers gifts and receive gifts from them, invite them on dates, and enjoy events with them. Sometimes you’ll get notifications about villagers being in relationships or getting into fights.
Sometimes you will get letters, notes, or requests from the villagers that can increase your social standing with them. You can visit their houses once invited in after gathering 3 hearts with the owner. Other times they might suggest things for the village to raise morale.
Factions
There are different factions you can join to raise social standing and give you better chances of getting the villagers that you want. By schmoozing certain villagers, you can strengthen the bond between you and the factions.
Commerce Traders Refugees Hunters Settlers (town) Etc.
Other villages
You will have 4 other villages (Wildbell, Belldenn, Mythport, Ringsten, and Traderun) around you that you can visit and trade with, each one including their own mayor. You can also visit a refugee camp, where you can recruit villagers when you have a vacant house ready for them.
Villagers
After thinking about it Villagers will be assigned a RANK and a TYPE. Like the original animal crossing villagers, they have TYPES such as CRANKY and SISTERLY. However there are only 8 of those traits… I’m making 12. Each trait is now gender neutral for more options.
Types:
Rude (Grumpy)- are more likely to insult you when scared, complain when something isn't working or up to their standards, get into fights with others Familial (Sisterly)- are more willing to help you when assigned a task, asks about your health, visit your house to talk, and forgive you after falling into a trap Snooty- are more than likely not going to help you, tend to belittle your significance, take things without asking Humble- are more likely to do honest work when assigned task, avoid rude villagers, help out when asked Preppy- are more likely to throw parties to raise morale, cheer people up, befriend newcomers, be excited about new developments Jock- are more likely to fight zombies, play games to raise morale, Smug (HardHeaded)- tend to get themselves in trouble, refuse help, make rash decisions Lazy- most likely to refuses to do work, Normal - are most likely level headed and be able to be reasoned with Crazy- most likely to cause fires and explosions, laugh maniacally, antagonize others for amusement Loners- most likely likes being left alone, get uncomfortable in crowds, appreciate quality time Timid- most likely are afraid of zombies, voice their fear, scream and run away
As for ranks, villagers can now have jobs that they are inclined to. There are only 8 of these.
Ranks
Hunters- fishermen, butcher Foragers- farmers, miners, lumberjacks Medics- doctors, healers, Social- traders, peacemakers, mailman Defense - monster hunters, guards, Researchers- scientists, reporters, Craftsman- fletchers, weaponsmiths, toolsmiths Caregivers- cooks, hairdressers, teachers
2 genders x 8 ranks x 12 traits= 192 villagers.
Disclaimer?

Tagging @mags-duranb, who asked (thank you for the interest btw, it was super sweet. Also, I love your art <3333) :) I was gonna make a post anyway, but I wanted it to be a timeline photoset hence why I’m not replying directly.
I thought it was about time I gave you guys a nice long update on the purrito, since we have now officially reached 2 months of age as of yesterday!
To answer the requester’s question, SHE is doing just fine xD That’s right, when we visited the vet about a week ago for the second round of shots, we got visible proof (or rather lack thereof) that we have a little girl in our hands. This was only a couple of days before I made an insta post announcing the official name, because of course it was. Way to embarass me, kiddo.
So I’d like to introduce you all to Buffy, because hello, so dang pretty, look at that last pic that was taken only yesterday, and she’s also pretty fearless and resourceful, though not necessarily highly intelligent xD Not a vampire slayer, but an ankle slayer for sure. I generally post updates on her every couple of days on instagram.
Oh, and, just as a final note on the whole name thing, yes, we still call her purrito from time to time, as well as a thousand other nicknames ;)
So! On to the update (and an extra... suprise?¿¿??) below the cut:
Buffy’s issues with food have gotten a lot better. She used to be vicious about meals, meowing and pleading hours before her feeding time. At first we thought we were perhaps feeding her too little, so we followed the general advice everyone gives re: how much to feed kittens, which is to say we just let her eat her fill. She did not stop until her belly was so distended I had to physically drag her bowl away. So we decided to slowly increase her intake whenever we saw she started to get skinny. Which, given her Longcat status, was so. damn. OFTEN. Seriously, if she looks malnourished in some pics, I assure you she’s not. She just grows and grows like a damn weed.
Lately, however, since her weight has reached a healthy plateau, she’s gotten much better about food. No screaming, no scratching, and she doesn’t really complain before feeding time anymore. She still follows us whenever we dare visit the kitchen, but hey, it could be worse xD
Something I’ve never mentioned here is that when we first found her, her whiskers were very short and stubby, which we originally attributed to her being very young. But eventually, we noticed that not only were her brow whiskers much longer, there was a lone whisker next to the stubby ones that was regular-sized, and the shorter ones looked almost... manually cut, if that wakes sense. A bit of research led us to find out that sometimes, littermates may do this to a runt (bite them off) when they’re competing for mom’s milk, which... not only makes my heart ache for our little buddy, it starts to put her whole attitude toward food into perspective.
Long story short, we were prepared for the possibility that she may forever have issues with food, but she’s been improving constantly.
Other than the food issue, Buffy has grown into a happy, healthy kitty :) She’s up to date on her shots, and we took her to the vet only last week where we got nothing but good news.
She’s very attached to us, especially me since I work from home and basically see her all day, and though she doesn’t complain and yowl when she’s left alone, she is super cuddly when we return home.
Given her age, she’s incredibly playful to the point that we get more exhausted playing with her than she does xD She likes climbing all over the place and exploring everything within reach, always looking for new ‘lairs’ and stuffing her butt into every nook and cranny, she loves to chew on cables (which has led us to do some highly creative concealing) and often engages in what we call ‘Crab Dancing’ when she gets excited/territorial during playtime:
( I *****MAY***** have edited this. Slightly. For my own amusement. It’s kinda soporific if you stare at it for too long)
We were glad to see she takes to new (human) acquaintances very well, and she hasn’t (yet) started wreaking havoc in our apartment. She, has, however, gotten very bitey during playtime, and it’s ALWAYS playtime, so we’re trying to encourage her to bite on toys instead of our fingers: it’s a sloooooooooow process. There’s also the possibility that she’s teething a bit early so she’s just constantly looking for relief. We’ve bought her a few special chew toys that should arrive shortly, and hopefully they’ll help. Even if it’s still early for her, hey, new toys, amirite? xD
Still, she never lashes out to us in anger/anxiety, not even when we gave her a bath where she was visibly distressed (yes, I know it’s not necessary for cats, but we’d never cleaned her with anything but pet wipes since we rescued her; she needed at least one) and yet she never tried to scratch or bite us. TL;DR she’s mischievous, but not aggressive outside of playtime.
She’s super long for her age and will most likely be a pretty long kitty when she reaches maturity. Seriously, y’all, Longcat 2.0:
( USB stick for size comparison, lol )
I’m still bummed my theory that she was part Van doesn’t seem to be true (in my defense, she has something very similar to the characteristic Van spot on her nape!), but hey, less shedding xD She also has a permanent bald spot on her spine now (as we knew she would), where the vet had given her that shot that saved her life back when she got sick.
She’s a sweet little doofus, who thinks she’s really a parrot and likes to perch on our shoulder, and meows the whole time I’m in the kitchen because how dare someone in this household eat when she’s not eating too, and when I ignore her grey-green supplicating eyes she just curls up over my foot while I wash the dishes, and she constantly gets tangled up in our legs and waits for us behind closed doors, and she’s a friggin’ Duracell battery who does.not.tire, and she tosses half the litter out when she digs, and she loves to take naps with us cuddled right over our chests so our heartbeat can lull her to sleep, and we love her.
Here’s to the next two months :)
Size comparison below, using my hand in both pics. Then and now :)
Addendum:
Edit: You can keep on reading, but the story has a sad ending, unfortunately :(
The above was the post I had prepared and was going to post yesterday on Buffy’s 2 month ‘birthday,’ so I’ve left it intact. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t add this latest development:
For a while now, we’ve been discussing how to deal with Buffy’s inexhaustible energy levels, because we do have other responsibilities, all of whom also require a good night’s sleep, which as you may imagine, has been a bit rare lately. There’s this saying that the only one who can keep up with a kitten is another kitten, but we were very reluctant to adopt another one, since we’re currently dealing with an imminent move and we weren’t sure if we could even afford it.
Well...................
I found and rescued Buffy. My partner found and rescued this little guy yesterday:
Five things here:
1) NO THIS WAS NOT PLANNED THIS IS SO BEYOND UNPLANNED I’M WFSJKLSDFJSKDHFSDKJ
2) MY PARTNER DIDN’T EVEN FIND HIM IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD HE WAS VISITING HIS MOM ASJKFDHLSADGHFDDFAS
3) WE SERIOUSLY DON’T KNOW IF WE’RE KEEPING HIM. SERIOUSLY.L
4) YEAH I KNOW YOU CAN’T REALLY SEE MUCH LMAO EVEN HIS WHISKERS ARE BLACK JFC BUT I DIDN’T WANNA SCARE HIM SO I DIDN’T USE FLASH
5) 31 FUCKIN YEARS WITH NO KITTENS AND NOW TWQO, TWO KITTENS WTFFFFFFFF ITS RAINING KITTENS PRAISE BE TO BASTET i guess?? wtffffffffff
*breathes into a paper bag*
I’m going to be even more reluctant to make any grand claims than I was when we found Buffy, because this little dude (this one is a dude, indeed) is in pretty bad shape. Though she’d been abandoned, Buffy was very clean and hale when we found her, even if she was a bit small and underfed.
This one though... poor little soot sprite is all skin and bones, he was flea-ridden until we took him to the vet, he’s filthy, he’s terrified and has a bum leg from some sort of accident. We didn’t even have a plan yesterday when my partner found him, but we figured since we had a lot of leftover milk powder and kitten pate from Buffy, we might as well feed up this little orphan.
It took some coaxing with a syringe, but he got a bit of milk down which got his appetite going and we were able to feed him some pate. He actually ate a fair bit, which is encouraging. We know for a fact he was abandoned by his mom, btw, she’s still roaming around the neighborhood but refusing to tend to him since he’s already older than 4 weeks (maybe 1,5 month old max). Just two weeks younger than Buffy. After he got some food down, we took him to our vet, who was reserved but cautiously optimistic even for the leg. He made us no promises, of course, and he advised we prepare ourselves for the possibility that he might not make it.
We’ve now had him for just under a day and he’s been improving. He was very scared at first, hissy when I went near him, and the first time I fed him at home, the new environment had stressed him out to the point that I had to use a syringe again to get him to eat. And yeah, we’ve had to keep him isolated ofc to protect Buffy (and him, omg, she’s literally twice his size in weight, no exaggeration, and most likely a social dunce with other kittes, she would destroy him). I’ll be able to give him a bath tomorrow afternoon after the 48hr clock on the flea medicine runs out, which is yet another reason we had to isolate him. Today, he’s been getting less and less reserved around me and he hasn’t needed to be force fed once, he’s been downing pate like no-one’s business. I weighed him earlier and found he’d gained about 40-50 grams, a number I offer cautiously as both weighings at the vet and today aren’t entirely accurate, because squirmy kitty. Still, he’s gained weight, even if only a little.
Buffy can tell something’s up, since we basically had to move her litterbox and feeding area and haven’t let her in that room since. It’s been... an adjustment xD But she bounces back admirably fast, she didn’t even bat an eyelash at the change; she’s just curious to discover what we’re hiding from her, obviously. She’s probably heard him meowing, too.
We honestly have no clue what we’ll do with him. Taking it one day at a time. He might not make it at all, and even if he does, he may never get along with Buffy, in which case we’ll have to give him away for both their sakes. I’m not gonna lie, money is a concern. Research tells me at their age and beyond the cost isn’t prohibiting, not even double that of a single cat. So if he doesn’t require any costly meds, we can afford him, especially since Buffy can now eat dry food (and so will he in a couple of weeks). This, again, is all hinging on a) him not having any serious, contagious illnesses, and b) him and Buffy getting along. In the long run, we know it would be way better for Buffy to have a companion to play and cuddle with, but we have to be realistic and prepare for the worst for now.
Soot sprite is a little cutie, he has the softest, most plaintive meow and there’s even hope for his little leg down the road (though honestly, that’s the last thing that concerns us; even in his current state, he’s perfectly mobile). His eyes, too, should get better with time if he grows healthier.
SO WE’LL SEE. RN I am beyond stressed and reserved, but also kinda hopeful. *sigh*

Green Apple Ginger Celery Juice
This spicy Green Apple Ginger Celery Juice is my go-to for a hydrating morning drink. It is especially helpful for me right now since the air quality in Los Angeles is still not great from the wildfires. I have asthma so I have to be extra careful about taking care of my lungs. And for some reason spicy ginger juice has always helped when my lungs start to feel cranky. But even when I feel great, this juice is awesome.
This is my current fave drink to start the day. Come sunrise, I pop out of bed and crave it's vibrant, sweet, spicy, mildly grassy flavor. Sometimes I add more celery to make it less sweet, and other days (like today) I add extra ginger for more spiciness. I also love the boost of vitamin C this recipe brings.
Get the recipe and a few breathing wellness tips + products I use..
Quick thank you to everyone who has purchased a Finding Vegan Meals kit in the first few days of launch! I am so excited to have you guys in the private Facebook group and help you eat more plants, get inspired and organized or even try vegan for the first time. Please remember to order before the $10 coupon code ends in a few days (find the promo code in this post). Also snag my menu + recipe +inspiration-packed Holiday Guide for FREE before 12/1. Seriously, everything you need for a vegan Thanksgiving (and December!) is in this 40-page guide. OK, now onto this juice...
Raw Ginger! Love this stuff. Ginger root kinda looks like mini lungs, yes? Funny how that works.
The one caveat for this recipe is that you will need a juicer to make it as a juice. You could absolutely blend this into a sort of smoothie, although celery can be a tricky blend since it is so stringy. If you want to blend a ginger-green smoothie, I would sub out the celery and sub in some spinach. I would also add in a few splashes of water. For the ginger, you would need to microplane the ginger to add to a smoothie - for best texture outcomes. Apples blend pretty well - just chop well to prep. And as always, use a high speed blender when possible. But yes, making this 'juice' into a 'smoothie' is possible.
Breathe Well. So as I mentioned, I keep lung health high on my 'wellness' priority list due to my asthma. Thankfully, my asthma is well-controlled. And though I had a flare up a few years ago that required me to go on a daily inhaled steroid - I was able to go off those meds and now I just manage things by taking precautions in my own home -- and being extra careful with allergens and air conditions when I go out or travel. And with the horrific wildfires messing with air quality in California, I wanted to bring you guys this recipe and a few tips ASAP.
Quick note, of extreme importance: Breathing problems are nothing to mess with. If you or someone you love is having trouble breathing, don't wait, call your doctor or head to an ER or urgent care facility, ASAP.
Also a quick note regarding the fires: I want to put this out there in the universe: THANK YOU to every first responder and firefighter caring for the people and animals affected by these fires. (And all natural disasters, really.) - My heart is broken for so many animals and people and places, but seeing the rescue stories brings some light to a very dark thing. I hope everyone closer to the fires is safe and on their way to healing. If you want to help, there are so many funds to donate to. One that I found is for the Chico Animal Shelter. They actually have an Amazon Wish List set up, which makes it super easy to buy something for them. They are handling many of the animals from the Camp Fire in the Northern California Paradise/Chico region.
Let's all hope the forecasted rain in NorCal (and maybe LA) on Wednesday is a downpour.
But aside from exceptionally bad conditions like wildfires, for just maintaining lung health, for me personally, these are five things that have helped..
Allergy + Breathing Wellness: 5 Things that Help Me.. 1. Air Purifiers. So important! Invest in at least one really good air purifier. We love out IQ Air (tip from my allergy doctor - he has one in his office) and also mini Austin Air machines. Rabbit Air is also great.
2. Keep Pets out of the Bedroom. This is a challenging one! But if you have bad allergies or asthma, you may want to at least 'try' it. I never though we could do it, but it works out ok... We have done this for a few years now. It's not 100% by any means. They still dart in and do a few laps around the bed on a daily basis, just to rebel. I happily chase them out. And sure, they come in on some mornings - usually after meowing a bit too loudly at the door -- and we cave. But for the most part, they sleep in their little beds right outside the door. I will say, I have noticed a difference since doing this since - technically - I am allergic to cats. They love this cat bed.
3. IQ Air Visual Monitor. I love this thing!!! I bought it just a few months ago when we needed to track our outdoor versus indoor air quality and I love this thing. It gives you an accurate reading for your air quality, humidity, CO2 levels and even particulate levels. I love seeing how things like cooking and even opening the windows effect our indoor air. Plus, the App is really great -- and you can download the App for free in the App store to view all the global data from IQ Air. IQ Air Visual on Amazon.
4. Ginger Juice + Today's Recipe! Seriously, ginger shots and spicy juice for some reason always helps me. I cannot really explain it and maybe it is just me! But it helps. I think it moves around the mucus that may be building up in your lungs. One thing I noticed is that ginger sure does look an awful lot like little lungs! I love that whole theory that foods that are good for certain parts of your body actually look like that body part... like walnuts and your brain, etc. Other foods that I have found help me: breathe easy tea, apples, a bit of caffeine from matcha, foods rich in magnesium, rooibos tea, spicy brothy soups and high-enzyme fruits like pineapple and kiwi.
In regards to why ginger helps... My friend Abby has some really cool info on her Instagram about how amazing ginger is for respiratory problems. Abby says, "..ginger contains chemical compounds that help the lungs function and improves blood circulation.." See the full quote on her post. PS. If moved, follow Abby on IG for inspiring content.
5. Exercise in Good Air. Around the time when my lungs were bad a few years ago, i was only exercising indoors, around my cats. I noticed that doing this really inflamed my lungs. I also notice that if I play tennis or run outside on humid or poor-ish air quality days I don't feel so great. So I always work out in gyms or yoga studios etc with GOOD air quality. And I try to minimize exercise around my kitties to strength training and basic 'dance parties of one.' You may have seen those in my Insta-stories.
Tips When Traveling. So those are just a few things that help me feel good. I also always make sure the hotels I am staying in when traveling are not dusty -- or have wood floors. I always request allergy-friendly bedding in advance too. And I try to stay super hydrated when on airplanes. Hot tea is the best. Running a steamy shower upon check-in is also a good idea for me. You just never know about allergens and asthma when traveling so ALWAYS bring some medication like your inhalers - or whatever. I always bring my inhaler even though I haven't used it in years. With asthma, you can never be too careful.
Anyways..... even if you have perfect lungs this juice is pretty dreamy and feel-good. The bright sweet-tart flavor is energizing and fun.
I am definitely on a juicing kick right now, and this is basically the only juice I have been making. I also like beet-ginger once in a while too. That pink color is irresistible.
What Juicer Should I Buy? I have owned many juicers guys. And these are three I can personally vouch for:
1. Breville. This is one of the more reasonably priced - all around good - juicers. It is more high speed than a "slow juicer" but it still does a good job and is easy to find. Breville on Amazon.
2. Hurom. This is the juicer I use now. I received one as a housewarming gift from one of my PR company friends and I am so grateful for that. I didn't think I that into juicing anymore until I received this gift. And since ONE juice in LA can cost $9-10, this thing is saving me a ton of cash. Hurom on Amazon.
3. SuperAngel. We bought one of these super fancy juicers about ten years ago. It is currently in storage, but I still LOVE it. It is heavy duty - all stainless steel parts and will likely last forever. So that's pretty cool. SuperAngel on Amazon.
There are others out there too, but these are the three that I have personally owned.
This is my current juicer... Hurom. It's an investment juicer for sure, but is definitely a winner. It works great and is easy to clean. It has about6 parts I have to take apart after each juicing sesh, but they rinse off under hot water super easily. Takes me just a few minutes to clean-up.
And you might remember, when I started my blog I wrote a lot about juicing!!..
