As Taylor becomes the first artist in history to have ever won album of the year 4 times at the Grammys, I'm reflecting on all of the articles and statements made over the past year comparing her level of stardom to those of Elvis and The Beatles. Because when I saw her win, I felt a joy and pride that I'd feel for a friend, for someone I love and am proud of myself. And it struck me how different she is from them. Yes, she has whipped up a pop culture craze with critical acclaim to match that can only be compared to the mania of those two. But she's done it in an unprecedented way. She acknowledges and takes pride in the fact that her fame isn't hers, its ours. She hangs out with us, creates inside jokes with us. She invited us into her home. She learns our names. We sing and dance at her concerts with her. She isn't the most famous person on the planet because she has a rockstar attitude, but because she writes songs that feel like pages of our own diaries. She hasn't created a legacy of glory, but a sisterhood. No matter how famous she becomes, it's the deep-seated bond of girlhood that grounds us in our connection to her, and her in connection to us.
