Paper rings

Paper Rings is about love over wealth and luxury. Paper rings are simple and unglamorous, but also can be fragile. Paper being temporary and disposable. The song mixes good and bad to say that Taylor choses an imperfect life with this person. Taylor described it as not having modern influences when it does and being punk, a word that fits this song better than reputation but Taylor used in Time. It's was hinted at on Reputation which makes me wonder if it was a Reputation vault track. It copies the sound of Hilary Duff's 2015 Breathe In Breath Out which Taylor mentioned on Tumblr:

Paper Rings was hinted at in the Me! Lyric Video with a Paper Ring with two polaroids (it mentions photo frames) and has a Spotify Story:

"I wrote "Paper Rings' with this idea of throwback sounds. We didn't want to use any sounds that were very modern on this song. This song talks about true love, and if you really find true love, you probably don't really care what the symbolism of that love is. Material things wouldn't matter to you anymore if you found someone that you just wanted to live your life with. "

In the iHeartRadio Secret Session (Audio in the video above) Taylor said:

[...]"imagining that I was a wedding band at a reception, playing the love songs that the bride and groom wanted to hear in, like, 1978 or something. It's called 'Paper Rings.' The whole song is just basically reminiscing on fun memories. A 1978 Wedding Band is a very specific reference. So thinking of songs from 1978... This wedding blog lists a few like Just What I Needed – The Cars, released in 1978 and one (H tweet) and was also in The Wedding Singer. Blondie is a clear reference for the Lover aesthetic and the song. Blondie released One Way or Another in 1978. (Before the 1D cover). The Ramones Blitzkrieg Bop is an earlier influence for it.

When was it written

Like all of Lover it is copyright 2019 for its release. It was Easter egged in the Call It What You Want Lyric video on 2 November 2016 and in the Reputation magazine hinting pretty strongly that it was at least partly written with Reputation.

It was recorded at Conway, LA, & Metropolis in London. London Boy was also recorded in both. Taylor didn’t record reputation at Metropolis but KOMH and a few lover songs were at Conway.

Live performances

Paper Rings was a surprise song in Minneapolis on 23 June, 2023, the other surprise song was If this was a movie. Taylor also performed it as a mash up with Stay Stay Stay on 21 July, 2024. It was not played the few Lover promo shows.

Rings

The Spotify Visual features a huge ring, pearls and beehive. When talking about the song Taylor talked about not caring about a ring if you truly loved someone, and the lyrics 'I like shiny things, but I would marry you with paper rings'. So why this visual with a huge ring and perfect life? To me this is about giving those things up, which fits the 'unapologetic' punk feel. This idea is also in the LAWYMMD video. Maybe rejecting a proposal with a shiny ring for a more youthful love.

In the iHeartRadio intro Taylor said the song was reminiscing on fun memories which these first verses are. These are the sections which match Breathe in Breathe out. which has lines that start with “I remember..” while Hilary was looking back on a lost love Taylor is reminiscing on a current love, it sounds both nostalgic and new.

Some fans do gymnastics to make them about a specific muse but they are very generic but I’ll add that Joe was not with friends at the Met Gala, he was with a costar that knew Taylor better.

The wine is cold Like the shoulder that I gave you in the street Cat and mouse for a month or two or three Now I wake up in the night and watch you breathe

This verse continues the reminiscing, I like the use of cold shoulder and street compared to the intimacy of watching someone breathe. Also this line reminds me of the Hilary Duff song title.

Kiss me once 'cause you know I had a long night (Oh) Kiss me twice 'cause it's gonna be alright Three times 'cause I've waited my whole life (One, two, one, two, three, four)

This verse is the most like a wedding band, and one Taylor mentioned when talking about the song that Jack does the count in. Taylor has not used ‘be alright’ very much:

The refrain is where Taylor would chose a simple paper ring over a fancy ring or wedding. When talking about the song Taylor described this as the ring not mattering, but to me paper is more temporary, it’s not a wedding but a tentative commitment of sorts. Taylor also describes the relationship as non traditional with “this” an ill defined situationship.

The one I want implies again there is someone Taylor is choosing this person over, she’s forgoing something shiny for this relationship. Yet the theme of reminiscing implies this is not a new relationship. Darling is not used a lot.

Picture frames are also uncommon in Taylor’s work, only HYGTG, Run and this song have a framed picture to mean a relationship. The Me! Lyric video had 2 Polaroids with the paper ring, very 1989/reputation-esque, one of her holding a cat and one with friends.

In this verse their relationship has some history of "exes, fights, and flaws" they’ve overcome. Similar to “one I want” this is not a simple we met and went from friends to this, they have history.

Icy outdoor pool

I have a post on the icy pool. Which is something Harry has been known for (also in Hampstead Heath Pond) long before Joe did handy exposition for this. Taylor said on 2 June 2018 in Chicago ( Harry was in the City) "2 New Years Eve's ago I found myself in the midst of a very like incredible 3am moment where you think you are invincible and you end up like jumping in a pool in the winter and you feel super untouchable in that moment" Taylor Nation cut this part out.

The house Taylor rented in Hampstead in December 2016 has a pool and she included photos in the Rep Magazine. A post on that.

Blue Walls

I have a post on this blue wall line and that it is a metaphor for being emotionally isolated. She also referred to blue painted walls in:

In the bridge Taylor tells how she wants good and bad, a similar idea to on New Years Day about wanting someone to clean up bottles after the party, or dreary Monday’s here. Again with complications, this is not a fresh relationship between 2 single people.

Drive is a Haylor theme also and this line reminds me of Style’s “let’s get out of the town” and finally taylor calls the muse “baby boy” .. perhaps she is singing about someone who’s ‘younger than her ex’s but acts like such a man, so.

yeah so what happened with the Lover Sessions as far as I recall is:

- someone leaked the date of the Rhode Island session and it had to be canceled. Half the people were invited to the Nashville session and the other half were invited to the lovers lounge which was the release party for lover.

- that meant that the Nashville session had 113 people and lasted until 5 AM.

- Also, none of the Lover Sessions took place at any of Taylor’s actual homes (except Andrea’s nashville house which is where all the nash sessions had taken place). The location of the LA session had been leaked so Taylor had to rent a house instead of hosting it in her actual home obviously obviously London was a rental because she never hosted any sessions in her and Joe’s place

- the tracklist leaked widely. this happened with the previous album as well but it was never widespread enough for taylor to confirm herself. For example, it leaked with 1989, but Taylor denied it even when she was presented with the actual tracklist in interviews.

- there were full threads on Reddit of people explaining what the songs were about before they came out. I’m not sure if this had happened with the previous albums, except perhaps reputation, but she clearly trusted that group enough to host sessions one more time

- I don’t think she ever intended to have sessions in more than one era, that is what she originally said during 1989. however, since she wasn’t explaining the album in any other way during reputation, she thought it might be a good idea then as well. finally, during lover, I think she kept it up because people wanted her to keep it up. The pandemic gave her an excuse to stop.

So yeah, no more secret sessions which actually makes me sad because I do want to meet her but 🤷 it’s for the best. also I’m not a boy I’m just dictating to my keyboard and it decided that it should use the male 🤷

When Taylor was unveiling new lyrics to Midnights, her second was in London. The line was, "I polish up real nice," which we now know is from Bejeweled. It also lead Taylor Nation to say, "London, you polish up real nice."

Come Back... Be Here has performed twice at The Eras Tour at Philly N1 (with Gold Rush) and in a mashup with Daylight at Melbourne N3 (with Teardrops On My Guitar). Message in a Bottle has also been performed at The Eras Tour at Seattle N2 (with Tied Together With a Smile). However, London Boy has never been performed and is expected to be performed at one of the London shows (I'm not even going to mention Beautiful Ghosts because I don't expect to be performed whatsoever).

Travis has mentioned the London shows of The Eras Tour, saying how he is most excited for those and will be in attendance. He's told us that he's been put in the loop of what Taylor's doing, he even listened to THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT long before us. So, she could potentially have something up her sleeve for these shows.

"Man, I'll tell you what. The London shows, I think she's at Wembley eight times, which is mind-blowing that she can do that many shows in one stadium and fill that thing up."

Taylor has rented a few places in London in the past- most notably where the London secret sessions took place for reputation. It’s said that she and Joe Alwyn stayed in London during lockdown. However, around the time that Midnights came out (and during the writing of TTPD) she was reportedly in the midst of buying a North London home with Joe. She apparently did just get a mansion in London last December to stay at during the Europe leg of The Eras Tour.

(I do doubt that she had gotten a place with Joe around the time of the Midnights release due to the sole fact that by that time she had already written You’re Losing Me and some of TTPD. Personally, I would not look for homes with someone if the relationship was getting bad enough to write a song like You’re Losing Me.)

Thanks for the ask, sorry for the delay, I was leaving the leaks but today learned something interesting, (thank you to @womanexile :) ) that the 'Lately' Voice Note leaked almost on it's own anniversary. The file includes that it was from 5 January 2017 (or 1 May)

It first appeared on HS News on the 6th Jan. There's a photo of Harry on the next day too.

This date is possibly an anniversary of them breaking up. The Blue dress on a boat was 4 January 2013. They had been spending time together through the end of 2014 to January 2015. Harry arrived at LA on the 2nd and disappeared. Then on the 6th Taylor posted "Clear Blue Water" Lyrics from This Love. They then stopped hanging out and were icy at Lily Aldridge's birthday. Taylor started dating Calvin a few weeks later. Harry posted rain on a window on the anniversary of that post and then wrote this song on the following anniversary.

It's not a finished song so I'll just flag this part, which with the timing, makes me think it could be about Joe and Taylor, it also includes a reference to Clean's "Rain came pouring down"

The rain falls down and I'm heavy now And I fall out [and it's] underground I don't believe what you're saying to me, "that I love him"

Link with Dancing with our Hands Tied

In April 2016 Harry and Taylor had been spending time together before he left to film Dunkirk and record HS1 in May 2016, and also both in NY & LA later in the year.

He and Taylor had both been in London at the start of January and both in LA at the end of January 2017. There was an unconfirmed sighting of them together on 28 December 2016.

3 January Taylor had a Lover Journal entry, that she and Joe had been together since October the 3rd.

5 January he then writes this voice note about a lover told them they love someone else.

12 January Taylor was then seen for the first time in a while in LA at a gym, which is when DWOHT is thought to have been written. DWOHT is about wishing she had another chance with someone but feeling fame ruined it.

Harry started wearing the Rose ring soon after. The rest of 2017 they released and promoted HS1 and Reputation and dated Camille & Joe, with a few Haylor nods

In Secret Sessions she talked about how this scenario was when she wrote Dancing with Our Hands Tied:

That inspiration for the song came when she was back in LA after spending several months out of the public eye. as we know now she spent basically all of this time in the UK without anyone knowing she was in a relationship. back in LA (i think for work), she went to the gym only to be caught by paparazzi on her way out.. the paps shouted all kinds of things at her including comments about her weight… remember this was the first time she had been properly seen in months and nobody knew she was in a relationship.. She described being really overwhelmed by the experience but that her thought process was less about herself and more about how she could possibly have a normal relationship when this was her life. Taylor actually said that after the incident she went straight to the recording studio, cried, and wrote this song.

@cntfightmydemonsthyknowhowtoswim just did a post about DWOHT, in particular the line "If I could dance with you again" means the song is not about her BF at the time, plus it refers to the age Taylor was when she and Harry broke up (25) and water rushing in (Clean, later Falling.).

Interesting that DWOHT and this voice note leak both reference Clean.

It's crazy to me that after all Taylor has been through, all the anxiety she expressed feeling before and during writing Reputation because of forces and judgements out of her control, she still has it in her heart to trust us one hundred per cent? She called the Secret Sessions a sacred space, and now I totally understand. There was a bond in that room that didn't even need to be spoken. She's so right though, you can't know if you can trust someone.....until you trust them. So unless we break this trust, it's here to stay. We should feel bloody proud of what we've got going, here. It's one of a kind, for sure.

Last Friday night, I was privileged enough to meet this absolute angel.

I want to say a massive thank you from the bottom of my heart @taylorswift for inviting me, and to @taylornation for making the event happen.

Taylor, spending my evening with you was the most magical night of my life and I'll never forget it, but sadly there was a couple of things I wanted to say to you that I didn't get the chance to say when we met, so I want to say them here in the hopes that you'll see this post.

First of all, hi, Taylor, I'm Ellie (but if you want to give me a nickname then please please do). I've been a fan of yours since I first heard your music, and meeting you was an absolute dream come true that I never for even a moment dared to believe could happen to me.

I first discovered your music through Love Story, when I was ~10. As a preteen and teenager, Fearless as an album has meant so much to me. Countless times I've been afraid, and I've turned to the letter in the back of the album, in particular the line "fearless is not the absence of fear" and I've jumped despite my fear, and I've landed on my feet, but I never would have made that jump without the support from your music. Had I been able to ask for an autograph when we met I'd have asked you to write "fearless" for me, so I could get it tattooed and have a permanent reminder to jump anyway from the woman who's made such a massive impact on my life.

More recently, when I was 15/16, I was starting to realise that I like girls as well as guys. Around this time, Welcome To New York came out and it really helped me to accept myself for who I am, a process which took months, and it took further months before I told anyone, but now I'm out to most of my friends and proud to be so. The line "you can want who you want - boys and boys and girls and girls" has been a real support for me when I've felt scared to come out or been scared to fall in love with a girl because of what other people might think. Your comment on Leonie's live stream the other week about dating a guy or a girl also put a massive smile on my face, so thank you so much for the support.

No matter how many times I say thank you, it will never seem like enough, because not only do you give us your time and your love, you give us your secrets and your trust.

To everyone who hasn't been noticed by Taylor, or hasn't met Taylor yet, that does not mean she doesn't love you. It does not mean you're less of a fan, or that you don't deserve her attention. My friend that went with me to the Secret Session had never been noticed by Taylor, but Taylor still greeted her with literal open arms and told us she loved us both. Maybe she just hasn't found your blog yet, or maybe she's waiting for the right moment to surprise you, or maybe you're on her list to meet on tour - you just do not know. One day, I'm sure you will meet Taylor or at the very least be noticed by her online, and it will come at the moment you need it most, because she's magical like that!
