Is it just Something Wrong With Me that I read the “nice uniforms” comment from Fi as kinda horny for firefighters or was this some kind of uniform envy???
Further, I think when most people think “hot firefighter” they think of guys (or just image search hot firefighter; it’s mostly men).
My theory/headcanon is if this is meant to be a suggestive joke about firefighters in uniform, it would be assumed to be about brave hot dudes with their jackets unzipped and washboard abs on display. but Fi actually just heard this joke in a holo-sitcom and is repeating it with no knowledge of that detail. Like when someone repeats a joke they heard on Seinfeld that doesn’t make sense outside of New York City lmao

"And they looked four or five years old, but Orun Wa had definitely said they were two. Skirata suddenly wanted to ask them how long they'd spent in those awful suffocating transparisteel vats, cold hard tanks that were nothing like the dark comfort of a womb. It must have been like drowning. Could they see each other as they floated? Had they understood what was happening to them?"

Kal Skirata, Jango, Orum Wa and the Nulls (by me, Nocturius)
Nocturius: Oh crap, I thought I've already shared that one here, but, hey, enjoy!
It's a piece I made on Krita last Winter. It feel aaaaaaaaaaaaages ago since do RC and TBB content (well... mostly memes tbh) on a regular basis.
It took me over 50h to do. 9 characters, Tipoca City and the work of light and storm. That was an hard one for sure! Still not 100% happy with the perspective, shading and composition but that's a ''me'' problem as an artist. I tried hard to respect the books description and also material from The Clones Wars and Attack of the Clones for the visual as reference pictures. I found some useful concept art online too. That was a very formative project. I think it was the first time I did piece directly on Krita instead of scanning a sketch. I was getting more confident with my stylet and wacom!
----
Here some WIP, for the funzies.

Go well with that fine fan-made audiobook reading of that exact scene! (no need to have read the first book to enjoy ^^)

Alpha-17 being a mother hen to the other Alphas* is something we need to see more. Jangotat survives because Alpha stomps in, shrieking obscenities, and drags his ass away, pausing only to yell at Obi-Wan for daring to put his little brother in danger (nevermind that that's what they're currently supposed to do). Maze doesn't tell him about Ordo punching him because if he did, Alpha would make sure the body wouldn't be recognizable as a corpse. Muzzle and Fordo don't get that brotherly overprotectiveness because they're just as prone to mother-henning as Alpha is. On their days off, the three of them team up to make the lives of anyone who dares fuck with their siblings hell.
*Specifically the Alphas that serve the Republic. Do you really think Mr. "They grow up loyal to the Republic or they don't grow up at all" would be at all sympathetic to Sull and Spar's reasons? The best case scenario is that he tells them that he's pulled some strings (read: blackmailed and threatened) to get them back into the GAR scot-free and if they do not accept it he will break their fucking limbs and drag them back.

Re: Zey's giant lightsaber. I started poking around Wikipedia a bit. I thought Makashi would be a lightsaber form that might lend itself to using a 'greatsaber' (WHICH EXIST, KINDA) but I think Makashi sort of implies more of a fencing/epee style. I looked up some videos. My limited knowledge of two handed/greatsword fighting is a lot of the moves rely on using a crossguard, and I don't see any Jedi having the gall to have a crossguard in this era. Especially not Zey. But still! It's cool!!
I do think Maze and Zey develop a close relationship during the war. Maze knows Zey as "General Zey" and Bardan knows his former master as "Jedi Master Zey", and obviously Bardan starts to drift during the war and he no longer has as close of a relationship with Zey.
But yeah we don't really get a lot about Maze's thoughts on Zey prior to Order 66--he goes from punching Ordo for interrupting Zey's meeting (Triple Zero) to him telling Ordo he doesn't like that Zey disagrees with the Chancellor/Republic (Order 66). A lot of it is foreshadowing so the audience has enough to believe Maze goes through with Order 66 for the BIG REVEAL in 501st that he doesn't. But Maze goes HARD for Arligan when they get to Kyrimorut, so even if he saved Zey based on him being "nice" and making caf, I think Maze and Zey got even closer going through the Ordeal.
Like... I headcanon after Maze pretended to shoot Zey, he somehow managed to drag his "body" out of HQ to a transport or whatever, and that's how they got out. Zey was super beat up from having escaped the Temple, and nobody probably questioned an ARC trooper moving a Jedi body? Anyway. Trauma bonded for sure.
Do you have thoughts and/or headcanons about Arligan Zey you would like to share? 👀👀👀
YES I WOULD LOVE TO TALK ABOUT ARLIGAN ZEY THANK YOU FOR ASKING
I have a lot of thoughts/hcs, but for now, sticking to my most canon-related ones:
Basics: I think he’s around 49 years old, 6’4, and built like a truck. I imagined he’s pretty clean cut at the beginning of the war and stops caring by the end of it since his hair is described as “shaggy” in 501st. Krad did a really great little comic with Zey and Bardan way back when I was RPing Ordo on tumblr. (circa 2015, wow!) But I'm imagining him younger than that now.
It’s literally nowhere in the books but I feel like Zey deserves to be kinda handsome. That’s my little headcanon treat.
Since he’s a big guy, I think he has a massive lightsaber (SHHHH WITH THE JOKES I KNOW HOW THAT SOUNDS) and wields it with a greatsword style that I am manifesting into lightsaber combat existence.
I have soooo many thoughts about his relationships with Bardan, Etain, Kal, and Maze (and Vau) but they all could probably go in their own separate posts. I really like the 'shssh don't let dad know' energy Zey brings to the story, and the fact that he's only seen through the rest of the cast's perspectives and they all have different takes on him. He gives me professor vibes in the beginning and then someone who's at the end of his fucking rope by the end of it. And I'm obsessed with the fact that Maze saves him and sneaks him to Kyrimorut. A lot of the Skirata gang have mixed feelings about him, but Maze (and Bardan) make the call to save/help him and I just think that's neat.

I just read the Republic Commando: Hard Contact and Republic Commando: Triple Zero novels by Karen Traviss. Republic Commando is Legends now, but here are a few points that struck me about arguments I’ve seen go back and forth here on tumblr. Spoilers for the books!
Several mentions of entire batches of brothers “disappearing” for minor variances & clones being more afraid of the kaminoans than their training sergeants. Kal Skirata drunkenly breaking into tears over the poor boys. Very clear that in Traviss’s books, clones were being decommissioned.
Several mentions of clones dying in live fire exercises on Kamino before being deployed & the training sergeants standing by and doing nothing.
There’s a blurb of a retired commando, chronological age 23, biological age 60. Again, in Traviss’s books, the artificial ageing doesn’t stop when the clones reach adulthood. The main characters are also described as visibly ageing between the two books.
Pretty chilling description of the kind of brainwashing that you believe because you don’t have any reason not to when your entire life so far has lined up with it. I would completely believe these boys could execute Order 66 without the chips & all I could do would be to empathise with them.
Troopers telling their concerned jedi to not worry their pretty little head about what happens to dead troopers. Later a reinforcing mention of no bodybags needed in the GAR.
Vau nearly killing a trooper in training & making the troopers beat each other into a pulp in training.
So again, Republic Commando are Legends now but if anyone wonders where the fandom got the idea that these things happen, here’s your answer. They aren’t fandom inventions.
Other notes and personal opinions:
I mostly enjoyed Hard Contact. There were some bits near the end that fell a little flat, but overall an enjoyable military action/military science fiction novel.
Triple Zero on the other hand, not so much. The pregnancy storyline was just icky. Both in how Etain herself makes it her entire raison d’être, how she makes it the reason for why Darman now has a future, and the lack of consent on Darman’s part. She intentionally gets pregnant without ever discussing anything with him (they’ve been together for two whole weeks at this point), whether he wants kids at all, wants them with her, wants them in the middle of a war, or sees having children in the same light as she does. She’s had the most superficial of introductions to Mandalorian culture and has no idea whether or to what degree the clones or Darman as an individual share those notions—given that they probably have an understandably complicated relationship with Mandalorian culture and especially the notions of children, parents, and legacy. For all we know at this point in the series she could have completely misconstrued the whole thing. But there she goes, and decides that this is how she will fix everything and give Darman a future: a genetic legacy to outlive him.
The force-accelerated pregnancy reads like a bad fan fiction and the whole “go undercover to hide the pregnancy” reads like a Victorian novel.
Etain feels like an odd choice for a point of view character in a military science fiction story. She’s aggressively the-girl-next-door, pointedly unremarkable and ordinary. I guess the point is that readers could have a regular person’s point of view, with which to contrast the commando mindset, and to whom things can be naturally explained without infodumping. But it goes overboard and makes her seem incompetent and immature, so you start wondering what the hell is she even doing in the story or on a battlefield or what does anyone see in her.
There are sexist attitudes straight from the planet Earth. It’s in men and females, how Etain and other female characters are seen through their sex first and other characteristics second, and how they are always “other” in comparison to men. But it’s not just the women, it’s young men—the clones—too where I get this vibe. It’s very bioessentialist. There seems to be this underlying thread of pairing up and reproducing being the most valuable thing a person can do with their life. Which again, seems like an odd choice for a thematic storyline in a military science fiction novel. Like, this is not what it said on the tin.
Some of the tactical/counterterrorism side in Triple Zero feels inauthentic to me as well. There’s too much being bad boys for shock value and too little professional soldiering for my tastes anyway. But I don’t kick in doors professionally so what do I know.
No sense of numbers for galactic economy. Exhibit A: Qiilura.
Lastly, fandom: can we get more Corr? This is an EOD trooper who gets both of his hands blown off early in the war, gets stuck in a logistics centre duty while waiting for better prosthetics, still determined to get back into action to fight alongside his brothers, gets accidentally adopted by some commandos, and makes a career change from disabling fiddly explosives to kicking in doors. A round of appreciation for Corr!

Sci-fi books I love! "MurderBot" series by Martha Wells. Relatable, so-over-it but still doing their best anti-hero! ❤️ "Chilling Effect", "Prime Deceptions", and "Fault Tolerance" trilogy by Valerie Valdes. Fun cozy enjoyable sci-fi! 💜 "Republic Commando" series by Karen Traviss. Clone Troopers written as real people and soldiers, by a real soldier! 💙
QOTD: What's your favorite sci-fi book? Cozy sci-fi recommendations?
