aside from, like, their infamous social world of nepotism/king-making and their long history of training eugenicists who legitimized scientific racism; lawyers who built legal frameworks for slavery/Jim Crow stuff; and economists who justify continued disenfranchisement, poverty, military interventions/invasions? here’s some of the more recent stuff i’ve been reading.

In 1914 Richard P. Strong, recently appointed director of Harvard’s new Department of Tropical Medicine, told a reporter from the Boston Evening Transcript that “the troubles to be feared from the spread of tropical diseases by traffic through the Panama Canal are rather heavy financial losses through disturbance of trade [rather] than any great loss of life.” [...] Nearly all of the department’s expeditions were to industrial plantations in the making. It is not by coincidence that Strong characterized the department’s work as industrial hygiene. [...]
[I]t was precisely the infrastructures of multinational firms like United Fruit Company, Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, and American petroleum companies overseas that Strong regarded as ideal assets in pursuing the kind of [...] research he envisioned.
In 1914, just one year after the creation of Harvard’s Department of Tropical Medicine, Strong took on an additional assignment that cemented the ties between his department and American business interests abroad. As newly appointed director of the Laboratories of the Hospitals and of Research Work of United Fruit Company, he set sail in July 1914 to United Fruit plantations in Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama. [...]
The Panama Canal, Strong recognized, had the potential to transform the economic and geopolitical fate of nations through the worldwide redistribution of disease. Anticipating the increased trade relations and movement of disease that the Panama Canal would bring, and influenced by the recommendations and financial backing of Harvard alumni such as Philippine governor Gen. William Cameron Forbes and patrons such as Edward Atkins, who were making their wealth in the banana and sugarcane industries, Harvard hired Strong, then head of the Philippine Bureau of Science’s Biological Laboratory, and personal physician to Forbes, to establish the second Department of Tropical Medicine in the United States (Tulane University established the first). [...]
As a shareholder in two British rubber plantations, Strong was acutely aware of the threat that Britain’s rubber monopoly posed to America’s economic interests. Strong approached Harvey Firestone, chief executive of the tire and rubber-processing conglomerate that bore his name, in December 1925 with a proposal to conduct an extensive biological and medical survey of the interior region of Liberia. Strong found a receptive ear. Firestone had negotiated tentative agreements in 1925 with the Liberian government for rights to a 2,000-acre plantation for experiments in rubber production, as well as a 99-year concession to optionally lease up to a million acres of Liberian land [...]. The biological and medical survey of Liberia undertaken by the Harvard scientists on behalf of Firestone, and ecological ideas of disease arising from their encounters with life in the tropics and work on industrial plantations, aided in altering the economy of nature and a nation. [...]
Strong and Forbes both left Manila for Boston in 1913. Strong began assembling a team of researchers and a course of instruction to take advantage of the increasing overseas presence of US firms. Forbes became an overseer to Harvard University and a director of United Fruit Company, the agricultural products marketing conglomerate best known for its extensive holdings of banana plantations throughout Central America. [...]
In 1912 United Fruit controlled over 300,000 acres of land in the tropics and had a net revenue of more than $5 million annually, holdings and profits that rapidly escalated over the next decade. With access to eight stations in different locales, free transport on company steamships, exposure to a wide variety of clinical conditions, and a ready supply of biological samples taken from the company’s hospitals and surrounding plantations, Strong boasted that no “tropical school of medicine in the world … had such an asset.” “It is something of a victory for Harvard,” he argued. “We could not for a million dollars procure such advantages.”[...]

They're so racist...y'allrememberthat movie MINORITY REPORT? If not, Google it and watch that joint. It's real life, now. They're literally MINORITY REPORTing only people of color, arresting. I said, ARRESTING NOT CITING. Us for things like: our home address being too hard to see from the street, our front lawn grass being too tall, etc. This way? They get to pad their police budget and arrest more people of color to also get kickbacks from the privately owned prison complexes, plus remove more people of color from voting rolls and desteoy our families. Destroy our economic foundation for survival. This destruction? Causes desperation, and increases crime. Which makes the police harass us all the more. And all of this? Because they're deliberately misusing flawed, racist policing designed to destroy us. The case of Luana Barbosa, a black and LGBT woman, beaten and killed by three policemen in Ribeirão Preto, in the interior of São Paulo, will be tried in a popular jury. Accused of intentional murder, when the intention to kill is assumed, the police were summoned to a popular jury by Judge Marta Rodrigues Maffeis. The sentence recognizes that there are indications that the police killed with aggravating motives, half cruel and by means that made it impossible to defend the victim. The case occurred in Jardim Paiva, on the outskirts of Ribeirão Preto. There were about 10 trial and instruction hearings at the Ribeirão Preto Forum, where police and defense and prosecution witnesses gave testimony about the fact. Throughout the process, there was the participation of social movements to follow the case and to press the justice so that the policemen were taken to a popular jury. Judgment day has yet to be released and is expected to be made public soon. The police can also appeal this decision to the São Paulo justice system. Understand the case Black, lesbian and peripheral, Luana Barbosa died in April 2016 after being beaten by military police in the Jardim Paiva neighborhood, in Ribeirão Preto, in the interior of São Paulo. She was even referred to the Emergency Unit of Hospital das Clínicas (HC-UE), but died five days later. The report by the Legal Medical Institute (IML) indicated that the young woman lost her life due to cerebral ischemia and traumatic brain injury, as a result of the aggression she suffered. The victim was assaulted after being approached by the PMs and requested a female police presence to be searched - the procedure is established by Brazilian law. Two years after the crime, in April 2018, the Civil Police of Ribeirão Preto concluded the investigation with the conclusion that there was “bodily injury followed by death”. The three accused police officers had their arrest requested by prosecutor Eliseu Berardo Gonçalves. However, the request was denied in May of the same year by judge José Roberto Bernardi Liberal. Since then, PMs have been waiting for the court's decision.

Brazil was Harvard’s preferred target. [...] Recent field investigations in Brazil show that the situation has not changed, and, if anything, it only seems to be getting worse. [...]
Harvard's Terracal subsidiary moved into their territory in 2010 [...]. Communications between Harvard and its Brazilian managers, made available through a labour court case [...], show that Harvard was aware of the conflict with local villagers [...]. The company has been ruthless in its tactics. [...] "We were watching wondering from one hour to the next when we would be killed", says one of the villagers. [...]
Tumblr media
"We used to live off of fishing and farming. I can still remember the smell of rice when it was being harvested. But now we can no longer grow [...]". These are the words of a resident of Arthur Passos, a rural community in the north-eastern Brazilian state of Piaui, speaking in October 2019. Ten years ago, they gained official recognition as an Afro-descendent community (quilombola), with special protections under Brazilian law, and with this they began a process to secure official title over their territory. But in 2013 that process was dramatically interrupted.
A powerful company, owned by Harvard University's endowment fund, moved in and claimed all the area surrounding the villagers' homes. The company, Terracal – a subsidiary of another Harvard-owned company, Gordian Bioenergy – erected a 17 km fence and hired security guards to keep people out. The people of Arthur Passos could no longer hunt, fish, grow crops, [...] or collect fruits, medicinal plants and firewood from the forest as they had always done. [...] Terracal cleared forests from the land and was preparing to move ahead with a massive irrigated plantation project covering 45,000 hectares.
Tumblr media
The Brazilian farmland deals have been especially disastrous for rural communities living in the areas where Harvard bought lands. [...]
The last [global “profound economic crisis”] a decade ago, which was caused by a collapse of the financial sector, triggered a global rush for farmland, as pension funds, private equity boutiques and billionaires sought refuge from tanking stock markets by speculating in so-called natural resource assets. Big players like the US pension fund manager TIAA and Sweden's national pension plan shifted hundreds of millions of dollars into new farmland funds.
But of the many financial houses suddenly looking for farmland, none was more aggressive than Harvard University's US$40 billion endowment fund. In an eight year period following the 2008 crisis, Harvard poured over US$1 billion into amassing a global portfolio of farmlands, covering nearly 1 million hectares [...].
Tumblr media
Brazil was Harvard’s preferred target. It established three offshore structures, operating through three different Brazilian agribusiness operators, to buy Brazilian farmland. By 2016, these three structures had amassed over 40 rural properties covering approximately 405,000 hectares, an area twice the size of all the farmland in the US state of Massachusetts.
In September 2018, Rede Social de Justiça e Direitos Humanos and GRAIN released a report documenting the human rights violations happening on some of Harvard-owned farms in Brazil and the University's lack of due diligence [...]. Our recent field investigations in Brazil show that the situation has not changed, and, if anything, it only seems to be getting worse. Moreover, new information shows that Harvard purchased more farmland in Brazil than previously estimated, and that its operations are connected to alarming levels of deforestation and forest fires in the Brazilian Cerrado (the most biodiverse savannah in the world) [...].
Tumblr media
Much of the deforestation that takes place in the Cerrado is the result of fires that are deliberately set by agribusinesses to expand their holdings. [...] Research conducted by AidEnvironment found that Harvard's farms overlap with the areas of the Cerrado where there was a heavy concentration of forest fires in 2019. [...] This was later confirmed by field visits to the communities undertaken by Rede Social de Justiça e Direitos Humanos in October 2019. The villagers of Arthur Passos believe that the fires were set deliberately, as a way to keep them from entering the area. [...]
"The forest reserve of [Insolo's] Galileia farm is all burnt. The reserve they left, in the lowlands, everything was burned", said one Baixao Fechado resident, speaking about the section of the former Harvard farm property that the company was legally obliged to protect as a reserve and not clear for farming.
Tumblr media
The Baixao do Aleixo community in the neighbouring north-eastern state of Bahia is in a similar situation. Harvard's Terracal subsidiary moved into their territory in 2010, when it bought a contested title to a large parcel of land from a wealthy Brazilian family. Since then, there's been a tense conflict between Terracal and the villagers who have used the land [...] for generations. [...]
Communications between Harvard and its Brazilian managers, made available through a labour court case filed by a former Terracal employee, show that Harvard was aware of the conflict with local villagers at its Bahia property.[...]
The company has been ruthless in its tactics. Villagers say people hired by the company offered them bribes, deliberately set neighbours against each other, and threatened and intimidated people with violence. "We were watching wondering from one hour to the next when we would be killed", says one of the villagers. [...]

Tall boi, Part 4
Skit sprinted out of the alleyway to see Captain Valor rip another chunk of pavement out of the sidewalk. He immediately recognized the demon, and sent the murder rock screaming into a nearby building. Captain Valor was not a very good shot. Skit immediatly leaped at him, throwing a sharp punch at his jaw. However, what he failed to see coming was a vicious kick to the stomach, knocking the breath out of him long enough for Valor to kick him in the neck like the ass that he was. They brutally fought, Valor delivering stupid one-liners and punches slow enough to be easily dodged. Finally, Skit had enough, and delivered a brutal jab, breaking Valor’s nose. “Piss off of Scarlet. He’s a decent human, unlike you, you pathetic waste of genes.” Skit spat, standing up and storming away into the crowd, most of which was too shocked to even register that the Demon of Justica was just waltzing away to god knows where, only after fighting and breaking the nose of Captain Valor. Jessica Biggs cake sprinting out of an alley, yelling “CAMERAS! WE NEED CAMERAS!”, only adding to the confusion. Apparently somebody realized that they needed an ambulance for their beloved hero who just got his ass completely handed to him, because there one was, with paramedics loading Valor onto a stretcher, which was just wholly unnecessary. Meanwhile, Skit was watching Jessica do her news report, completely aware of the people watching him in awe, and completely lacking in two licks of a shit to give about it. “Wow, thanks for standing up for me back there. Jesus, I knew he hated me, but I never thought he would try to KILL me.” Scarlet remarked, walking alongside Skit, who, of course, nearly collapsed upon Scarlet’s interaction with him. “Yeah, he’s a total assgoblin.” Skit managed to say, still head over heels for the Scarlet Scorpion. The two walked away, celebrating their victory with chocolate gelato.
