Continuing with the Nijigasaki/100 Girlfriends fanfic I'm not writing, chapter one is the bit I've mentioned already with the two groups meeting at the Ohananomitsu Spring Festival and the performance of the Rentarou Family idol group. Because it's a live show, everyone is in costume, of course, which means that Rina is wearing her Autoemotionconverter Rina-chan Board.

Which is why in a subsequent chapter, I need to have just Rentarou and Rina meet out in the city someplace — and for the purposes of the fic, it needs to be a much more SIFAS-style Rina, one who's always using the Rina-chan Board to hide her face.

(The point in the 100GF side of the timeline that this takes place is shortly after introducing Ahko; on the Nijigasaki side, it's a little more vague, but somewhat after Rina has befriended Mia.)

The bulk of the story is just for them to be friendly and for Rina to talk about her friends, and how they — and she — are like and unlike some of Rentarou's girlfriends. I specifically want the text to be mostly or entirely from Rentarou's POV, and for him to compare how Rina uses her board to how Shizuku uses her TTS quotes, and to compare how Rina hides her face to how Meme does hers, and to ponder whether Nano or Ahko would find a similar device useful. (My initial judgement: Nano would feel that just being with her boyfriend who can read her emotions and moods without assistance is more efficient for her, and Ahko would conclude that while some extra emotive signalling could help maybe, Rina's technique wouldn't have helped her with her friends from class.)

And of course, the end of the chapter comes when an opportune gust of wind blows the Board out of Rina's hands; Rentarou catches it but is left looking straight into Rina's eyes —

— and the complete lack of a soulmate zing surprises him, because it seemed like such an obvious setup for his life at this point. They cheerfully part as friends.

(Remember, the punchline of the whole piece is when he zings with Shioriko's big sister Kaoruko.)
