The room glows golden, partially from the ever-glittering presence of the veil around Rene's summoning and partially from actual gold, which coats the stately walls of the hall she is peering into. It glimmers in sunlight that streams through a large arched window--Sarkorin influence there, her mind supplies, the very sort of curl and cue that she's come to recognize as common in older-generation buildings in northern Mendev that have either somehow survived the last four Crusades or have been adequately replicated to appear older than they are. This one, obviously, is a replication, as would be the entire hall--a mimic, a mirror into the world she exists in and possibly her own architecture-drenched mind, to obfuscate what dimension she'd dragged to her backdoor. The creature she's summoned has further hidden itself by presenting as--her. Rene stares at the stranger standing in the center of the hall, the being watching her with a still, wide-eyed expression of mild surprise. It's a good likeness, if hodge-podge--the creature can't hide the divine light that seems to pour from their skin, even if they've arranged their features to mirror Rene's. Their outfit does the image no favors for authenticity, their walking dress a typical Mendevian fashion except for the bright orange color of their blouse, nothing like the Garundi styles that Rene clings to even in the backwater arctic circles she's forced to occupy. And, of course, the wings, white edged in golden brown, folded against the entity's back are a bit of a giveaway that Rene's peering into a pocket of Heaven, or perhaps Nirvana. The entity seems perfectly happy to just stare at Rene through her portal into eternity, her expression never moving from that initial barely-there surprise. Well, Rene is the one knocking, so she might as well be polite. "Greetings," she bows. "I call for aid. May you help me?" "Who are you?" The entity speaks with Rene's voice, even. It trembles at the end, the same way Rene's does when she's absolutely terrified and trying not to show it. It's a little rude, really, to mock Rene's own trepidation about the encounter. "A traveler," Rene answers. Best as always not to give names, just in case she's snagged some kind of fey. "The sister of an architect and encounterer of many strange creatures and peoples. I know a man who is in need, but I do not know how to aid him. I would like assistance with this, and am willing to pay."

LIVE STREAM: ODE FOR JOE (HENDERSON)—Renee Rosnes with Nicholas Payton, Melissa Aldana, Peter Washington, and Al Foster, SMOKE JAZZ CLUB, 20 APRIL 2024, 9 pm set

I was all in for this gig, a top flight band honoring a revered composer/improviser. The blurb mentioned that Renee Rosnes and Al Foster had long standing gigs in JOE HENDERSON’s bands. In interviews around the formation of Artemis, Rosnes recalled a gig with Henderson where she and the rest of the rhythm section were women and that’s all the NYTimes talked about when she/they/Henderson were simply stoked about how good the music was. Foster was part of the Art of the Tenor trio. In her band introductions, Rosnes recalled that everyone but the tenor player had played with Henderson.

Okay, a second tenor on a gig is rare enough and this tenor player was 13 and living in Chile when Henderson died. So, she’s excused. But when the Saturday/Sunday tenor was belatedly announced as Melissa Aldana the gig became can’t miss/see in real time/see again. She is a favorite and part of the pleasure in watching her career unfold is to think about who have been formative influences. Early in her career, she recorded in a trio. Not Sonny Rollins, but Henderson maybe, Mark Turner probably. Her tone has gotten lighter and she’s taken to the mid and altissima range. While her pauses have always been distinctive, with Charles Altura and now Lage Lund making the guitar the primary chordal instrument in her bands, there is even more space. On this night, she was throatier and more lower register. Her band is quite quite good, but Peter Washington bubbling away behind her (and everybody) with oh so smart bass lines had to push her. Washington was a treasure on this gig as he so often is. Foster was equally important.

Nicholas Payton is somewhat dour and implacable, but his trumpet speaks eloquently with Hendersonian taste and adventure. Rosnes was appropriately the music director, it was her gig. Take that NY Times. Her playing too had both touch and an edge. Yes, the band had glorious material to work with, rich and subtle. They made it sing and feel comfortable without compromising Henderson’s intelligence.

And what material. The originals were Serenity as the opener and Recorda Me as the fitting introduction to a stunning home stretch. The standards Without a Song (Aldana has seen fit to post her solo as a clip on social media and that’s well justified) and, probably, Duke Pearson’s You Know I Care spoke to Henderson the arranger and were evocative.

But that homestretch was sublime. Recorda Me but than Isfahan from the Billy Strayhorn tribute I had even before I started getting fully back into jazz and then Beatrice from the Art of the Tenor treasures. Have I heard Aldana play from the Ellington universe? It was an invitation to go higher while also locking into Johnny Hodges lush tone. But it wasn’t just her as Payton soloed first with his own taste and Washington helped them all, including Rosnes, with particularly provocative lines as he had the rich composition and the orchestration to draw on. Beatrice was even prettier while having a drive that both Rosnes and Aldana stoked.

It was a fitting tribute to a giant of the music and as fine a stream as I’ve heard in a while.
