So yesterday after seeing confirmation there’s going to be a song with Mina in Blanco’s new album @wafflessquad innocently asked me “who is she?” and I basically started squawking and thowing links at her in a frenzy.

It occurred to me that other members of our International Brigade may not realize that Mr. 2003 recorded a song with an 83 years old lady 😬

I’m not even going to attempt a best of, with over 150 million records sold worldwide there’s just too many enduring successes in her 60+ long career but here’s a personal favorite: Il Canotto is by Renato Zero (he of the neon onesie, glitter make up and surprise threesomes) and her version always has me in stitches. Couldn’t find a video with subtitles but she’s basically convincing her lover to rent a boat for a romantic excursion & picnic, throwing him overboard and smugly watching while he drowns, wailing about being unable to remember a single good thing about him 😬 “We’ve finished all the cheese, the tea and the chocolate. Born to a young, mutant mother, Ren found himself inheriting no such gifts or abilities from her. His father absent, to which Ren was raised on hearing only hushed rumors and hearsay. A criminal? Wanted for murder? How could his mother fall for someone like that?

In his settlement, Ren and his mother were considered rather well off compared to their other counterparts, allowing for Ren to enjoy his own interests and pursuits. He was taught to love numbers, but also the luck of gambling. He found a love in old culture, and had the means to collect a few pieces that had managed to survive all these years.

Compared to other settlements, Ren’s was small - but largely successful, with few enemies, good trade routes…and somehow, luckily, untouched by raiders.

Until, of course, it wasn’t - and Ren woke in the middle of the night to fire. Fire everywhere, as far as he could see, and scavengers looking their stores.

Few people were able to escape the chaos. Those that did attempted to regroup and start an expedition to Sol City - the nearby largest settlement. Some survivors made it…but noticeably missing was Ren’s mother. He doesn’t believe she’s dead and gone, not by a long shot. He insists she and others from their home went to a different settlement instead, maybe in the opposite direction. Ren is determined to find her - and he’s been looking for her ever since.

Only for the past month has Ren lived in Sol City. The settlement is much bigger than the home he had grown up in, so he is still trying to learn the culture and find his way around.

He trusted the small council of his previous home - and had been studying the laws and history of the land to one day take their place. His heart wants to trust the council in Sol City - they were elected by the people, after all. He prefers to see the best in people…but also acknowledges no one is perfect. He hopes to learn more about Sol City to see how he can make improvements for everyone living there.

MANILA – Residents and local government units were surprised by the unprecedented floods that ravaged communities in Cagayan Valley, which was a result of too much rainfall from series of typhoons and the release of water from Magat Dam. What can the communities do to prevent this in the future? In an interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Sunday, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary Renato Solidum Jr. said Cagayan Valley naturally has a lower topography compared to the mountains surrounding it. "The rainwater coming from those mountains goes down and goes to Cagayan River, which also causes flood during heavy rainfall. The natural flow of the river, and cutting of trees also contribute to flooding," he pointed out. The spilling operations in Magat Dam would affect the following areas: San Mateo, Cabatuan, Luna, Reina Mercedes, Naguilian, Gamu, Ilagan City, Tumauini, Delfin Albano, Santo Tomas, Santa Maria, San Pablo, and Cabagan in Isabela; Aurora province; Tuguegarao City, Enrile, Solana, Iguig, Amulung, Alcala, Gattaran, Lasam, Lal-lo, Camalaniugan, and Aparri in Cagayan. "Flooding has reached Aparri, Cagayan, as this is the exit point of Cagayan River," according to Solidum. Reforestation Solidum said reforestation in mountains is vital to prevent another disastrous scenario from happening in the future. "This would slow down the rainwater from going from mountains to the river," he said. Another suggestion was to construct a temporary embankment, so that the water would go here. Dredging the Cagayan River is also necessary since this is already shallow, he added. The widespread flooding in Isabela and Cagayan would greatly affect farmers, as well as the other stakeholders in the agriculture sector, he said. Kaliwa Dam Is there a need to construct the Kaliwa Dam? Solidum said while this can still be continued saying this is needed to reduce the water shortage during dry season, effective management is crucial. "Efficient management is necessary, so that this would not cause massive flooding," he said. Solidum said flood maps (floods related to Typhoon Ulysses and the Magat Dam water release) were already uploaded in the Hazard Hunter app. This DOST-managed app that can be accessed through a computer or mobile phone, helps people know if their location is at risk for volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and other hazards. The flood impact maps can now be accessed via hazardhunter.georisk.gov.ph. The maps show satellite image interpretations using artificial intelligence (AI). "Using AI, the DOST-ASTI (Advanced Science and Technology Institute) interprets whenever there is a new satellite image. Then this would be updated in the Hazard Hunter," Solidum said. He clarified that the flood maps are different from the hazard maps, as the flood maps show "what happened or is happening". ‘Communities were informed’ The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) posted on its website on Sunday that the NIA-Magat River Integrated Irrigation System has advised residents of Isabela and Cagayan about the water release from Magat Dam on Nov. 9. "NIA-MARIIS officials have warned residents living near low-lying areas, particularly those adjacent to and along the Magat River and Cagayan River to move to higher and safer places as the dam continues to release water starting November 9," it said. NIA is in charge of the irrigation development and management. NIA's claim was supported by a state hydrologist in a radio interview on Sunday. "Not all of us can be as good as you." the sarcasm is real with that one, though. a cheesy grin, a wrinkled nose, and a roll of his eyes all pair the perfect attitude of mockery. continuing to pull the other in their direction towards the restaurant, he's taken off guard by the question. "Do what? Lead the way? Flatter you? Make jokes?" he's confused until Ren finally elaborates.

"Oh, so you admit it." he flutters his eyelashes in a fake bashful way, "You think I'm perfect." he speaks this in a sing-song way with laughter. "Ha ha, Renato Luna loves me and wants to marry me and be with me forever." he teases with a spin in his shoes. he's showing off, he's flashing and he's making a scene of it. "I dunno, I'm just me. You'll have to ask my mom about that one," he means Jessie, of course. "And I'm sure my sister added to some of the personality since I had to share nearly everything with her when I was younger, and if you can ever figure out who my dad is, then--" he shrugs. "Maybe he has some answers."

He just knows exactly how many hours Kyle’s been putting into that game at the arcade, and he expected to see Kyle’s initials written in among the list of high scores. Realization arrives with a clearing of Ren’s throat and a change of tone. “I mean…yeah, of course I can help you with it,” A curving smile curls in the corner of Ren’s mouth. Working as an insurance agent is one thing, of course, but for Kyle, it’s nothing more than a means to make money. Ren sees his true passion when it comes to turtle fighting. And…taking care of the little Toddlings, of course. But every time Kyle’s eyes light up talking about DigDug or PacMan or Street Fighter…Ren finds himself falling in love all over again.

– And of course they’d order in. On his own, a full schedule often leaves Ren frazzled with how to fit everything in - getting him to the point where he plans out his activities by the minute, including a three-minute-allotted bathroom break. But with Kyle…somehow…it all just fits together perfectly.

Between the long hours at Kyle’s job, eating dinner, going to the arcade, and meeting up with Jessie…Ren could feel his stomach glurg at the thought of trying to fit it all in with the remaining hours of the day they still had. But treating her to dinner first, two tasks just combine into one and a weight feels lifted off Ren’s shoulders. “How do you do that?” He asks. “How do you just…make everything feel so much easier?” Relief seeps back into him when he squeezes Kyle’s hand. “Well…I don’t know about future mother-in-law or trying to score any points…but it just seems like the nice thing to do, you know? Gabs and I are always grabbing food for one another. It’s just…I dunno…what you do for someone you care about.”
