biography:

Born to a young, mutant mother, Ren found himself inheriting no such gifts or abilities from her. His father absent, to which Ren was raised on hearing only hushed rumors and hearsay. A criminal? Wanted for murder? How could his mother fall for someone like that?

In his settlement, Ren and his mother were considered rather well off compared to their other counterparts, allowing for Ren to enjoy his own interests and pursuits. He was taught to love numbers, but also the luck of gambling. He found a love in old culture, and had the means to collect a few pieces that had managed to survive all these years.

Compared to other settlements, Ren’s was small - but largely successful, with few enemies, good trade routes…and somehow, luckily, untouched by raiders.

Until, of course, it wasn’t - and Ren woke in the middle of the night to fire. Fire everywhere, as far as he could see, and scavengers looking their stores.

Few people were able to escape the chaos. Those that did attempted to regroup and start an expedition to Sol City - the nearby largest settlement. Some survivors made it…but noticeably missing was Ren’s mother. He doesn’t believe she’s dead and gone, not by a long shot. He insists she and others from their home went to a different settlement instead, maybe in the opposite direction. Ren is determined to find her - and he’s been looking for her ever since.

Only for the past month has Ren lived in Sol City. The settlement is much bigger than the home he had grown up in, so he is still trying to learn the culture and find his way around.

do they trust the council’s leadership? why or why not?

He trusted the small council of his previous home - and had been studying the laws and history of the land to one day take their place. His heart wants to trust the council in Sol City - they were elected by the people, after all. He prefers to see the best in people…but also acknowledges no one is perfect. He hopes to learn more about Sol City to see how he can make improvements for everyone living there.

if they chose their sector and profession, why did they make that choice? if they didn’t, why not? were they happy with their assignment or not?

Ren only half selected his sector and profession. In the previous establishment he lived at, he had expressed interest in being a leader when one of the older members eventually retired, so his skills were in law and history and government. In Sol City, no such position actually existed.

what’s one object that they always keep on their person?

One of the few things Ren was able to save from the fire is a photograph of him and his mother, which he always keeps in his pocket.

Ren is never without some sort of gaming device. From old gameboys to DS’s to even a PSP. Whether for it’s for his own entertainment while waiting for a ride ( because no, he can’t drive ) or to help keep his boyfriend occupied for a while, he never leaves the house without something to entertain himself with.

He wears one of his mothers’ rings as a necklace. She and his father were never married, but he has a vague memory of her telling him that it once belonged to his father. He has no way of knowing whether the story is true or not, but he likes to keep it close - and tends to touch it when he needs comfort.

Lying is something that has never, ever come easy to Ren. He’s never been good at it. He doesn’t like how it makes him feel. Even white lies leave him queasy and uncomfortable. His inability and discomfort with lying may make his future dreams of becoming a lawyer rather difficult…but he’s still determined he’ll be able to do it without throwing up on the stand, or in front of clients.

Ren is capable of creating, manipulating and severing seals that allow for particular objects, people, or even power to be imprisoned into other objects or entities. Strongly powered magical objects and people are the most difficult to be sealed away, and require a large amount of concentration and power on Ren’s part, which may cause him to faint afterward. Others are capable of unsealing the person, object, or power if done so with the correct magic.

Animal: Selkie

As a selkie, Ren is capable of turning into a seal and disappearing into the waves. In seal form, he looks no different than an average seal. However, when he returns to land as a human, he must remove his ‘seal skin coat’, which is what allows him to transform. If the coat were to be stolen or withheld from him, he would be incapable of transforming back into a seal.

BIOGRAPHY

Ren was brought to his adoptive mother fairly young. His biological mother was there one minute…and then disappeared into thin air the next. The mystery stumped locals for days before relenting custody of him to a family friend, and her disappearance has haunted Ren ever since.

Not much time passed before he attached himself to his adoptive mother. Together they learned to laugh and cry and grow together despite the tragedies they’d both experienced, Ren as her surrogate son, and her as Ren’s surrogate mother. Through whatever future hardship sent their way, he quickly came to realize he could rely on his mother for anything and everything.

But his adoptive mother wasn’t the only new family he took to heart; Gabriella Ryu, and the entire Ryu clan became like his extended siblings. Where some people go through something difficult - such as the loss of their mother - and become hard, shielding themselves from the world, the opposite seemed to happen to Ren. Surrounded by those who love and care for him, even with the absence of his mother, he looks at the world as a bright and hopeful place where people, largely, are more good than evil.

Unfortunately, this has left him to have been taken advantage of before…and seldom of which Ren has learned his lesson. His mother, in her absence, left him with a large fortune all of his own, which several have tried to swindle away over the years. In the wake of being left by fake friends and betrayal, he seeks comfort in the arms of his adoptive mother.

With the whole world at his fingertips, determining what to do with it all proved to be rather difficult. He knew he wanted to have a higher education, but what field exactly remained uncertain. At various times in his college career did Ren change his major or switched classes - biology, english, psychology, and even computer science…none of which particularly stuck with Ren.

He now works simply as a tutor for various subjects across an assortment of grade levels. There has been an idea cropping into his head of being a lawyer - someone who can use their knowledge to properly help others…but is that truly what he wants to do for the rest of his life? He’s continued this small tutoring gig until he knows for certain…and with potentially hundreds of years in front of him, he wants to know he’ll enjoy exactly what he’s getting himself into.

He writes in every book he owns. Yes, he knows plenty of people hate it. No, he doesn’t care in the slightest.

Dungeons and Dragons is his favorite game and he loves running any sort of tabletop roleplaying game. He participates in several online communities and runs several games in his free time.

Because he never had to learn how to cook, Ren has horrible eating habits that include only ever getting takeout, donuts, mac-n-cheese, and instant ramen. Does he know it’s bad? Sure. But will that affect his future? Eh, probably not.

BIOGRAPHY

The earliest memory Renato has of his father is of waiting outside of the courthouse for him. Which, as far as Renato is concerned, is the only memory of the man worth having. A few short months after Renato was conceived, his father entered a very lengthy, very public legal battle after he assaulted and kidnapped a man. Growing up, Ren did all he could to avoid reading any of the news articles or court records - his mother said he was a bad man, and that was all Ren needed to know. He didn’t need a father, after all, so long as his mother was at his side, life would be just fine.

Until, of course, she wasn’t.

He recalls waiting outside of his elementary school, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting until a teacher saw him and attempted to get in contact with his mother. She never forgot to pick him up. Traffic must’ve been bad or an emergency came up and…Ren came up with every possible reason for why his mother hadn’t shown or answered, but it was as if she never existed. She had simply disappeared in the middle of the day. With a father in prison and a mother that many presumed deceased, Ren spent the following weeks in a foster home, just long enough for next-of-kin to be contacted, which proved difficult when Ren knew no one. His mother had always been his whole world. They didn’t need anyone else.

She wasn’t next-of-kin, but he did, eventually, recall a family friend close to his mother - Susanne Ricci, who Ren eventually went to live with and was adopted by. He grew to love her more than anything, and enjoyed being welcomed by his various new adoptive siblings, but the ache in his heart still persisted over the absence of his mother.

As he grew, Ren decided he wanted to make some sort of difference in the world. Despite the tragedies he suffered, he still saw the world with a bright light. Why cause more people pain? Why not at least try to protect them? With his love of learning, when Ren was in high school, he decided he would begin to study law to protect people who couldn’t protect themselves, to protect them from people like his father, to ensure children like himself weren’t lost along the way.

When he lost contact with one of his old foster-siblings, Ariana Maleki, Ren followed his adoptive sister, Gabriella Ricci, to Salem, only to learn the news of her untimely demise. His sleuthing made Ren realize that Ariana isn’t the only one to have gone missing in the mysterious town, and ever since, Ren has stuck around in an attempt at uncovering the mystery and getting justice that Ariana deserved.

POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS

Online RP Buddies: Not to be meta and break the fourth wall. Ren has always had a love of playing any sort of game, board games, video games, roleplaying games...he hasn’t always been able to find people nearby him who were up to playing, but he’s been heavily involved in several communities and run countless campaigns for people. Can You Even Cook?: Perhaps someone that works at a restaurant in town that has come to notice the frequency of Ren’s visits. No...no he can’t cook for himself and he’s very grateful that he’s able to order food so easily. I’m Not Playing Poker With You Again: In general, Ren really enjoys math and statistics - not for anything theoretical, but he likes to use this ability when it comes to gambling. Who says card counting is cheating? Ren says that it’s using information to your advantage. He won’t go to most casinos, but he enjoys playing games with friends. He even goes as far to pull out a calculator and do a few calculations to better know his chances of winning. It’s the exact reason why most will no longer play with him. Sorry About Your Sibling: They may recognize him from Ariana Maleki’s funeral and were unaware of the connection the pair shared some years ago. The sympathy is nice, but Ren is more interested in getting answers. Daddy Issues Club: His father is, technically, alive and well, but Ren has made little to no attempts at contacting the man since he was imprisoned some years ago. Ren’s not too interested in speaking about him, but it sure would be nice to have someone who knows exactly what he went through. Not Dead Yet: The only reason Ren believes his mother is dead is because he doesn’t want to think that she would abandon him in the middle of the day without a word, though there’s still a small part of him that thinks she might be alive out there...somewhere. He still has questions left unanswered, and wants to get to the bottom of her own disappearance.
