Portrait of Dorset Rena Gardiner Her second book, taking her several years to complete, was only published in an edition of 30, more for friends than wider publication. It is the only survivor of her books that I have, aside from her Dorset trilogy, but the best. She was absolutely remarkable, researching, drawing, then autolithographing direct to zinc plates and printing everything from her cottage press. Later distributing from her cottage until taken up by the National Trust. The genius of self-publishing. If I had to take a book to the Desert Island this would be a contender. #renagardiner #dorset #autolithography #selfpublishing #theworkshoppress https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt5U4Afg9Ri/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=o151aaj1twpj

Rena Gardiner Tarrant Monkton from above A snip from Dorset : Tarrant to Blandford, one of a trilogy of large format autolithographed books Rena wrote and illustrated over a period of two years, although the drawings and research took far longer. She was the genius of self publishing, not only researching, writing, but also drawing all the colour separations onto heavy zinc plates, then handprinting, binding and distributing, all from her cottage in Dorset. #renagardiner #selfpublishing #dorset #autolithography #genius

Warmwell Rena Gardiner Autolithographed by Rena Gardiner for her 1960 Portrait of Dorset, The South East. It was her second book, hand printed in an edition of just 30 copies, 150 pages, and a project that took several years to complete. It set the template for the books to follow and is arguably the finest book she produced. This lithograph is of Warmwell, a Dutch gabled house with mullioned windows that Rena found hidden behind stone walls. #renagardiner #autolithograohy #dorset #genius #warmwell #surfacepattern #statelyhome #johnpiper

Portrait of Sudbury. Rena Gardiner. Finally Rena Gardiner's work is getting the recognition she deserves due to collector Julian Frances who funded a book on her work. I've been invited to be a guest exhibitor at Saturday's Children's & Illustrated Bookfair at Hilton Olympia and have a pile of spares that I'll be selling. #renagardiner #Autolithography #hiltonbookfair
