Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English

Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies. I've hit the link limit on this post so I've had to remove NovelUpdate links, but they're still in the version of this post on Wordpress. Note that Taiwanese titles are not included on this list.

This is everything I know of as of December 11, 2024. There might be more. I tried. Resources used to compile this list: Danmeinews.com; this Carrd, last updated in March 2023; this other carrd last updated October 23 2024; list of danmei with official licenses on NovelUpdates; a similar list on Goodreads; danmei-specific list on Reddit that to my eye looks accurate for the larger publishers but isn't thorough for some of the smaller ones.

Seven Seas:

These titles are in various stages of publication, from "entire series released" to "license literally announced less than a week ago." As far as I know, all Seven Seas titles are available world-wide, through major distributors and libraries, and in e-book and print formats. Seven Seas translation quality varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).

Rosmei:

Rosmei licenses are Singapore distribution rights only. There is a list of international partners organizing group orders here. I've personally placed my orders through Yiggybean, as discussed in reply to this ask. Most of these titles are only being released as print editions, tho titles that weren't originally on JJWXC (of which there are several here) WILL have e-book editions. My first book from Rosmei arrived, and I found the translation and editing to be very strong. I can't speak to how accurate it may be to the Chinese original, but it read smoothly and had very few errors. Overall, though they've made some mistakes, they've been communicative and responsive.

Via Lactea titles are primarily for sale through their website and through some distributors, such as Amazon.com. All titles are either print-only or e-book + print. Only a handful have actually been released, the rest are licensed and presumably in progress. I've now read three titles published by Via Lactea and while the translations are decent I could wish the editing was more consistent. Everything reads as if it would have been improved by one more thorough proof read.

'Shenmue II'

"As the Shenmue story was originally envisioned as one video game, development of Shenmue II ties directly with that of Shenmue I. The concept of a second part of Shenmue only came into fruition in early 1999, when the game was split in two, with the first chapter set to appear in August 1999 and the second in December. For the US release, both halves would be distributed as the same package, but as time went on, the first part was expanded, the second part delayed (into 2001), and further parts were planned. Prior to the split, most of the development work which had occurred had focused on Ryo's adventures in Hong Kong, so when the game was unveiled at the Shenmue Seisaku Happyoukai in December 1998, almost all of the footage was that of locations that would be featured in Shenmue II rather than the first Shenmue. Characters such as Ren, Xiuying and Wong, neither of which appear in the first game (and Shenhua, whos appearances were fleeting), were shown in trailers and openly discussed, as were scenes of Wan Chai, Kowloon and Guiling. Several quick time events from these areas were also discussed and demonstrated, as were mechanics such as part-time jobs and gambling, neither of which appear in the first game. By the middle of 1999, development on would become Shenmue II was paused in order to concentrate on releasing the first game, with Network Jungle II: Digitaliland (in May 1999) being one of the last trade events to discuss the wider Shenmue saga. I don’t really watch anything but anime right now. Everything in reality is painfully normal, pushy and smothering. Like there is something wrong with you if you choose to live alone, be alone, and not socialize with people after being ghosted by an entire group of people you were pushed together with for the benefit of America. But l I don’t need to see a dramatic recreation of what I’m already living in terms of a waking nightmare out here. These people are like you! Don’t you want to hang out with them. No I hang out with fighting game characters thanks. The virtua fighter anime is really good. It borrows a lot from city Hunter and had some really good pop in terms of soundtrack. They spend a lot of time in Los Angeles and it seems like they are trying to constantly kidnap Pei Chan from a small restaurant back to Hong Kong. Akira is obsessed with food and accidentally kisses her saving her life. She complains the rest of the show that she lost her first kiss to a man with garlic dumpling breath. They hook in a lot of Chinese martial arts and animate them as meticulously as Hunter x Hunter explaining Nen and Ren. It has a very American feel for a sega property but it’s a Japanese language track. It has a lot of things that I’m sure inspired shenmue since it’s Yu Suzuki. I’m watching it on Samsung tv plus via the retrocrush pluto tv channel. I’m sure you can find it elsewhere. I haven’t seen the crunchyroll shenmue anime yet but I might watch that after I finish michiko and hatchin. I’m going slow with it because it is so intense. Have to be in the right mood at the right time like music for me. I don’t do much of anything else. Real life is horrific, awkward and fake. I am pretty far in elden ring though. Radahn’s entire equipment set is sick. The lion bow totally makes me want to switch to a dexterity build. I’m mostly strength and faith right now. Hunting dragons with it. Even though I still only have seven intelligence. Just like real life!

Shenmue fanfic ideas

The problem with writing the Ren/Ryou pairing is that you can't write a canon compliant version where Ren is vulnerable and open. He usually deflects answering personal questions.

So I think - if I ever returned to finishing my Ren/Ryou fanfic, it'd be very non canon. And I'm not judging people for writing non canon stuff - some of my favourite fanfics are non canon.

But I'm going to have to (gently) disagree with the kind people who like this pairing and think Ren being vulnerable is canon. You can't make Ren vulnerable and canon (even though there's nothing wrong with being vulnerable) because Ren is too caught up in toxic masculinity and being an overly macho guy.

There's nothing wrong with being private or strong, but he's overdoing it (to the point where I think he's repressing his emotions).
