but in all seriousness, here's a list. this isn't an install order nor does it list all requirements for mods, but it does have all the mods I can't live without or have used before and enjoy. read mod descriptions closely, watch for compatibility sections, and you'll be fine. I won't really mention cosmetics beyond listing some devs (including myself, to be transparent) who focus on that kind of thing, because this list will get even longer and cosmetics tend to be more on a case-by-case basis. I also won't list texture mods because I don't use them.

this is also not exhaustive and I will definitely forget some lol. browse nexus, there's definitely lots of things I probably looked over/missed.

also, do not use synth's guide, period. it's now unsupported and I'm tired of troubleshooting it on the main modding server.

LE1 Community Patch - Necessary for any playthrough.

Astrological Practices I Live By

Some may have alternative views, which is perfectly okay. I am here to grow and experience, so if there is something that seems constructive, I'm all ears. However, these are all personal practices and something I think is important for whomever seeks my posts. 🖤

Your natal chart is the precedent for everything. Asteroids, persona charts, solar returns, and more all bounce off of the original astrological placement of your birth. If there is contradiction, that should be analyzed and indulged in where it exists, and most importantly why. Not a lot of observational techniques I see actually use natal placements to boost and further the analysis of alternative charts. ex: comparing the juno PC chart of desire and commitment to groom/briede PC chart and understanding your inner needs to the potential outcome while adding the basis of your natal venus/mars sign to understand your relationship dynamics

Mythology is a huge aspect of astrology, which helps influence and gain characteristics to each planetary body. I never would have understood anything well if I had not taken a course to broaden my views and experience the same literature it is in association with. Regardless of belief system, you cannot walk in the same path if you do not follow the same footsteps. reasoning: rationalization of obscure objects always falls down into attempting to find language to demonstrate said acts, whereas mythology and story-telling is the backbone of bringing ideas to words that did not have definition. (however, you do not have to take a course to do so).

Astrological degrees are important. Everything provides context and I never experienced the weight of any chart until I brought the theory of degrees. Some may argue that it is ineffective, but this supports a heavy form of individualization and provided so much depth that I otherwise found lacking. ex: analyzed similarly as if a house placement, but more in symbolsis to the sign. everything changed when i realized my sun (chart ruler) is with a scorpio degree, finalizing the missing feeling i had all along that I was hoping to gain through alternatives (persona, asteroids; etc)

Some placements are meant to be "harsh, ugly, and/or weak." Depending on your configuration, those should be exalted as strengths rather than weaknesses. Change your perspective, not who you are. Astrology provides context. Your chart is made to be a form of guidance and abundance, but also an observation of the life you experience. Be willing to do the work or focus on a safe landing until you are able to do so. Do not let people take away your empowerment and rid yourself of growth. It's your divine right. [This is a safe place, but I will not shy away from the consensus of likeability.] ex: placements do not finalize your identity and many astrologers are expanding their acknowledgement of various facets on a daily basis, where many observations are still extremely left-field. unless someone is able to become you, there is no ability to override your instincts. by attempting to discard and over-romanticize, you are taking away the vitality you can gain when you come to accept and find hope in the wounds that used to scare you. remove posts that demonize you, but also lessen you by removal of your depth. people hate what confuses them. stand as an enigma.

Astrology is as powerful as a sensory process. It does not define fate, but it is a combination of various aspects that contribute to a language that can be transcribed within the human experience. When looking towards prediction, it is not much more than understanding that rain has a tendency to come when the sky gets bleak and trees shake in the wind. Saturn in Retrograde is similar to the temperature dropping when a change is about to happen or having a powerful instinct that an area is unsafe. It is a sign, but not a decider of choice. There is a reason why it is crafted upon an abundance of art and "aesthetics" that exist in intangible forms. reasoning: astrology is not a hard science and may never be, but the discrimination of subjects that do not belong in that category are absurd. coincidence is powerful and simply the pattern of understanding outside of our present material. similar to language, we attach meanings towards predictive association in order to enable meaning. do not take away the beauty of limited understanding because we live as creatures with limited resources. this does not discredit spiritual belief, but acknowledgement of causation vs. correlation of specific events.

A while back I bought Littlewood on my PC but I didn't really connect with it. I recently rebought it on Switch and now it's one of my favorite games. The key: the ideal way to play this game is lying on a couch or in bed where you're trying to turn into moss. It's got a rich incredibly kind story, and a bunch of tasks to fulfill to improve the town, but it's also by far one of the chillest games I've ever played. It makes Stardew Valley seen intense. And yet I can play two hours of it and it feels like 10 because I'm so engaged.

Movement stick or arrows, A,B, and rarely Y are the only keys used. There is absolutely no time pressure. It's effectively turn based. You can run around, talk to people, buy stuff, sell stuff, rearrange the town, decorate the houses, etc. as much as you like with no time crunch. Gathering and materials processing take energy and when your energy gets low it becomes night. You can teleport home at any time. If your out of energy outside your bed, you simply have a bad night's sleep and have less energy the next day. It will tell you when you've hit your max limit and one more thing will put you over, so it's very hard to miss it's time to stop.

There is no combat (yet?). You avoid enemies or they'll knock you out and you'll wake up at the entrance to the area with the area you were in locked. You can still go to other areas to continue playing though. And these aren't hard enemies per say, you just have to stay out of the way and if you pay attention that's generally easy to do. You WERE the hero that saved the day. Now you've lost your memory and retired.

There's a coffee shop and every morning you can get a free donut or hot beverage that gives you a harvesting skill boosts. So every morning I talk to the villagers, choose who to hang out with, compliment them, and get my tastey treat. There's very little skill involved (slight timing thing on fishing, but not a mini game.) The inventory is all neatly arranged for you and easy to find things. There's extensive information about how to unlock things. The game gives you lots of hints and advice. All townsfolk are dateable, with the exception of Dudley.

You're incentivized to decorate the villagers' houses to their basic taste but have a lot of free reign. You can rearrange everything freely including raising and lowering terrain. Certain villagers want to live near certain buildings, but that's the only constraint. If you remove something like a crop, you get the materials back to place it elsewhere. You really can't get yourself into trouble.

It would be a great game for a little kid. It's also a great game as a disabled adult with chronic pain and fatigue who likes to play low impact video games while watching TTRPG actual plays. Your attention can drift as much as you like and it will be there waiting when you come back.

I play a lot of Stardew Valley with my boyfriend and love it. It's a very chill game. But the time crunch element can be overwhelming and too intense some times. By eliminating that and putting up a bunch more guard rails, Littlewood is an equally engaging village sim, but way way calmer. Sitting upright in a chair with a mouse and keyboard didn't do the experience justice. Full veg mode from the couch does.

Now that I've finally finished it, I figured I'd share my thoughts on Sonic X Shadow Generations. It's good and you should buy it. O.K. Spoilers, below.

In terms of the Sonic Generations section, it's the same great game as it was 13 years ago. Ironically enough, I bought the original release back on December 23. Lucky me. The only real notable differences are in performance and story, so I'll focus on those. I'm not really an expert on performance. I can barely tell the difference between 30 fps vs. 60 fps. I'll just say that Sonic Generations ran better on my Switch than the original release did on my gaming PC. Take of that what you will. In terms of the rewrite, I thought it was lackluster. Ian Flynn is a writer that I like a lot, so it's a bit of a shame but not too much. The story remains virtually identical, with the changes adding nothing of note at best, and feeling slightly awkward at worst. I could have gone without the random Time Stone reference (it feels a bit off considering Sonic has time traveled in numerous other ways before), and Amy's crush on Sonic being toned town. I feel like making her less clingy was good, but they went a bit too far, in my opinion. I know she still mentions her attraction to Sonic in the dialogue, but I would have preferred it was mentioned in the cutscenes. Also, the removal off "I thought I was dead! Floating without a body in a black limbo... Ughhh, I'm gonna have nightmares for weeks!" is criminal.

Now, onto the main attraction, Shadow Generations. Now, this might be controversial, but... I think Sonic Frontiers is better. Don't get me wrong. Shadow Generations is still a great game, but it didn't quite capture the magic Frontiers had. In terms of the boost levels, Shadow Generations definitely beats out Sonic Frontiers. The level design was frankly more interesting, and I had a lot of fun using Doom Powers to take/come up with shortcuts. In terms of the Open Zone, Frontiers wins. While Shadow Generations White Space fits together more neatly, running around and exploring just isn't as fun as it was on the Starfall Islands. Part of that might be unlocking the map as you go, while in Shadow, it's just handed to you. Doing the open zone challenges in Shadow Generations feels like a chore, whereas it felt fun in Frontiers. Boss fights, I mean, come on, obviously Frontiers was going to win. The battling mechanics were so interesting, and it felt really fun to string them together. Shadow Generations also has really fun bosses, but I found them really easy. Honestly, the bosses characters are really what made the boss fights fun in Shadow Generations, I was geeking out like a kid in a candy shop. In terms of the story, I find them both great. I would heavily recommend Pariah695's video on Shadow Generations story as he goes into more detail than I will (even if I don't agree with his opinions on Ian Flynn). Ultimately, it might just be that the characters and their journeys in Frontiers mean more to me. They're both very enjoyable, and I'll probably watch the cutscenes of Shadow Generations for fun like I do with Frontiers.

Ultimately, even though I think Frontiers is the better game, Sonic X Shadow Generations are still great games that I would highly recommend.

Star Trek: Klingon Academy

Unfortunately, I couldn’t fully enjoy the full extinct of this game due to my colourblindness. The interface colours, while fitting in with the Klingon style, makes it almost impossible for me to read any of the words in the HUD. Even lowering the resolution to make the HUD appear larger didn’t help, so I had to refer to the manual for the list of button presses I needed for the interface system in order to play.

Klingon Academy a follow on from Starfleet Academy, with similar gameplay. The bridge view is removed, instead offering a first person or third person view of the ship. While it was nice to look at, it was better playing in the first person view anyway. Klingon Academy introduces a “Verbal Orders System”, which uses all the number keys to give a large list of commands, requiring 3 or 4 button presses. It’s not very easy to do while in the middle of combat using a joystick to fly around. You can order your helm officer to fly, but they’ll crash the ship.

It’s a shame as there’s a lot of advanced tactics buried deep in this system. You can send marines to capture enemy ships overload shields and weapons for a short boost but risking damage and subsystem targeting – this feature would be better refined in Bridge Commanded, aided by your officers not being awful at piloting the ship.

The piloting issues also extend to the enemy. While Klingons are known for ramming as a last resort, the Federation (well, simulated Federation) in this seem to love it, with collisions running a lot of missions. You have even more options available to you by using nearby phenomena such as gas giants and planetary rings to your advantage. It’s a shame that there’s so much depth, yet most battles end up slowly pummelling each other while circling close with you trying to avoid getting rammed.

Throughout the game you’ll be treated to a ton of live action clips starring Christopher Plummer and David Warner as Chang and Gorkon, who do a wonderful job and the game gives a great insight into Klingons, as well as serving as a prequel to The Undiscovered Country. There’s a lot to like about Klingon Academy, it’s just a shame about the interface and enemy AI.

The Husk And The Cannibal

I got a little inspired by @sonicexelle-junkary​ latest story to write something of my own I haven’t written a story in awhile so I hope it’s alright not sure how accurate this will be. 

But I did wanna write a scenario on how i think it might be for Slammer Sonic to meet Hungry Hero Sonic like in this photo here sorry if my grammar/punctuation isn’t the best I don’t have Grammarly like I used to.

It was a regular day in green hill zone like any other Hero was currently ontop of one of the loop de loop hills having a meal to himself which was a medium rare steak made from questionable meat and some chillie cheese fries.

“Ah nothing like sitting down with a hot meal and watching the sunset”

It was peaceful until suddenly screams could be heard in the distance Hero of course had grown used to screams but he wasn’t the reason of them so he had to investigate the source which annoyed him he packed up his meal and stretched.

Looking down from ontop of the hill he looked around trying to find the source he could briefly see in the far off distance what looked like another hedgehog based on the quills and a deer mobian on the ground he didn’t recognize either of them but he decided to run down and see what was up. 

Slammer had found himself in another world after messing with the files of the pc he was in this world was much like the one he had previously been in of course being sent to a new world weakened him a little so he needed a quick boost of energy.

And luckily for the virus they had stumbled into a couple on a walk together so using what energy they had they took on their disguise form and began to loudly cough and stumble towards them falling down in-between them both.

“O-Oh dear gosh Sonic what happened? you look horrible!” The deer mobian said and the Buck mobian grabbed him and helped him to his feet one of the Slammer worms sliding it’s way into the deer’s phone. 

“Here dude come on hun call the hospital will you?” *sonic* she nodded and prepared to pick up her phone wondering why it was slightly slimey but too much in a rush to worry about it and started to dial the number. 

Now close enough to the buck smiled and grabbed onto his head quickly snapped his neck and looked over at the deer. 

She began to scream just as she dropped her phone it exploded due to the worm and managed to injure her enough to where she couldn’t run away.

Slammer began to softly laugh and groan loudly their whole body shaking and making cracking and croaking noises before looking down at the buck their mouth unhinging and slightly over a gallon’s worth of worms erupted from their mouth covering the Buck flooding his ears, mouth, nose and eyes.

The worms rapidly ate their way thru him and laying eggs inside and while this happened Slammer’s head cracked and turned the other direction paying attention to the deer who was trying to crawl away he walked towards her and stepped on her chest where she screamed for help.

By this time Hero made his way down and looked a bit suprised to see a sickly gross hedgehog that looked alot like himself and almost gagged seeing the corpse of the buck. 

“Come on dude don’t you know you shouldn’t play with your food?” He prepared a spindash and spun right into Slammer sending him flying to the ground and turned his gaze towards the deer girl who already had some worms on her wiggling their way inside.

He shook his head and sighed even with his speed he couldn’t get her to a hospital in time to get thoes removed not to mention it looked like she was paralyzed by these strange bugs. 

Not to mention he’d still need run back intime to confront this double of himself “Sorry ma’am I would have loved to MEAT you but got more important things right now.”

She meanwhile was crying her whole body numb unable to move much besides twitching Hero quickly broke her neck since it would be the most quick.

Slammer was on the ground currently rebooting as this happened transforming into his true form no longer disguised a gentle whine coming from him and the sounds of a computer rebooting could be heard from them.

His chest eye had a large blue screen on it and the empty eye sockets on his face glowing green he did his best to get up and look over at the other sonic his voice was shaky and raspy.

“P-Please I've already seen my entire world fall to this monster you’ve go... got to kill us both before he could spread to your world as well!”

Hero looked at the other curiously it was clear that this was indeed another version of him honestly almost felt pity but was disgusted by the sight of him even a little uncomfortable wondering why or even how he was taller then himself.

“Jeez and I thought I had a pretty face but looking at you makes me question that ... Guessing your the actual sonic while that other thing was something else based on what you just told me.” 

He tapped his foot to the ground for a moment to think. 

“QUICKLY HURRY I-I CAN’T CON...” and not before long the sounds of a window’s 98 computer rebooting could be heard the green glow from the eye sockets could be seen disappearing and the black eye with the red pupil appeared in the middle of his stomach. 

Hero chuckled “looks like Jekyll gone and all that’s left is Mr. Hyde ha” 

A more serious expression came to his face after his little joke “look I don’t know what you want but your not exactly welcome here theirs only room for one *HERO* around here got that? I ain’t sharing my food” he did keep his distance though not wanting to catch whatever this thing had. 

Slammer’s chest eye blinked slowly processing what Hero had said and looking around his surroundings to the virus's calculations perhaps this was another virus like them ? 

he did mention food he might not have looked like them but perhaps he had mastered his disguise without killing the host they didn’t have enough processing power to prove otherwise currently.

So for right now they just assumed they were another Slammer copy they did make copies of themselves so it was within the realms of possibility's though they were annoyed another copy of themself chose Sonic as their host.

“... M..M...MMM My ... apologizes I was not aware we had already spread to this world please continue with our assimilation of this world and gather all the data I will .... Make my leave feel free to use these two bodies to gather your power faster”

Hero raised his eyebrow this thing thought that he was another one of them? well perhaps that was for the best nothing on that other hedgehog looked edible so it wouldn’t be worth killing them. 

Plus if this thing just left he wouldn’t need to fight them he decided to go along with it for now 

“Uhh yeah this world’s already under our control we’re just taking our time consuming it’s uh code?” 

He didn’t understand what this thing meant by data of course but he had to be at least somewhat convincing though this was no computer program this was his world.

Slammer slowly nodded before turning around and opening a portal to exit the game “... Must gain more strength and power will look elsewhere restimulate with us at a later date fellow Slammer” 

and just as fast as they were their they walked thru the portal and disappeared.

Hero wiped the sweat from his head. 

“Whew that was a close one thing might have looked weak but if it’s controlling another version of myself I wouldn’t wanna fight it unless I have to” 

He looked at the two worm ridden corpses and groaned “Ugh gonna have to get rid of these shame I can’t use their meat now hmm should bring some of these worms to miles they seem ... Electronic 

so maybe he could study them and if this thing returns we can be ready to fight it he’s smart enough to discover it’s weakness I am sure of it”

The overheating aspect is because of Turbo Boost being idiotically implemented in which makes it overheat over the stupidest things, if you get a Turbo Boost switcher it immediately cools down the entire Mac and makes it function better. (Also the major issue with macs is the cooling system is ABYSMAL or else it wouldn't get so hot) I've used both PC and Mac and both have strengths and weaknesses but I've been able to multitask Adobe After Effects Photoshop Motion and YouTube and Discord all at the same time without issue. I play Minecraft and Sims fine, I run Virtual Machines to run Windows and play windows games through it, it had Boot Camp which allows you to run Windows. Is it overpriced yes its ridiculous but it does actually function well for handling heavy video editing programs, rendering, and art, + multitasking versus some Windows computers, if you wanted the same level of power you'd probably need a more expensive Windows. (Also at least Macs don't obsessively try to update your computer without your permission (WINDOWS 10). EITHER WAY I think both suck and I'm not an advocate for either but for people who still own macs you can still get a lot of use out of them just look for something that affects Turbo Boost and the temp will go down significantly. I've had my Mac heat up just browsing YouTube for no reason but this removes that issue pretty well.

Disclaimer, as always: This is based on an MTL translation, I do not know Korean myself, I am trying more to stick with the impressions/vibes of a sentence instead of a strict word-for-word meaning - and most importantly, this is only for fun. “Ugh….”

Yeo-woon woke up to the sound of an incoming text, so he blearily reached for his phone. Once he saw what it said, he shot up, eyes wide open and any thought of sleep wiped from his brain.

This is the ATB Recruiting Service.

Congratulations on passing the document stage.

The interview schedule has been e-mailed to you.

“...‘In it, you will find the time and date of your interview, so please check it to make sure everything is in order.’”

He had submitted his documents to this job posting just a week ago, but the message assured him they had been accepted.

“What!”

Suddenly, he felt more awake than ever. He would’ve never thought this job could work out. He’d sent that application just in case, but now they wanted to interview him and somehow, he felt more scared than excited about it…

There’s countless ways for a person to fail an interview, so did it even matter that he passed the document stage? But getting better at interviews required practice, so it would be good to go, no matter the outcome. He’d only had one interview so far in his life and that had been for a part-time job at some PC cafe.

His heart felt like it was trying to beat out of his chest.

‘What should I wear to the interview? A formal suit would be best, but do I even have one at my place?’

Yeo-woon scrambled for the closet doors, to see whether he would have to make the long trip to his parents’ house.

“…Ah, thank goodness.”

Fortunately, the clothes in question were clear to see the moment he opened the closet, tidily hung up after their last trip to the dry cleaners, even encased in a protective plastic bag that was keeping them in perfect condition.

The interview’s location wasn’t that far away, but it still took three commutes via subway. All in all, 45 minutes. Even though he had to switch trains at a very popular station, he still got lucky, since it was the late afternoon and so there were few people on the subway.

‘Ahh, what if this actually works out?’

His head hurt just thinking about the daily subway commute in the morning…

‘What if I get accepted in another location altogether? I do need to re-sign my apartment’s lease soon, since it’s about to end. Should I just move somewhere else, instead of extending the lease?’

Yeo-woon stared down at his phone screen, while he daydreamed like this in his head. He responded with some emojis to a chat message from a friend, looked at some news articles and finally went on Illusion’s official website. There was a new announcement, posted just 30 minutes ago and detailing the next update, both with patch notes and information about the upcoming events.

Yeo-woon skimmed over the notes, realizing there were some new events about to be added and bugs they were about to correct.

‘No clue what those bugs are, but they should’ve been fixed ages ago! The event is brand new, so it’s gotta be great. It’ll be really fun! I can’t wait to play it.’

Those were Yeo-woon’s vague thoughts, before he closed back out of that webpage. There had been an event preview attached to the post, but he wanted to wait until he could play it all himself. It would feel more immersive that way.

“Did I get here too early?”

He had overestimated his chances of getting lost along the way, so now he was at the location way too early. He still had to wait one and a half hours until his interview would start, but he had no clue where to go until then.

So he tried to find a nice cafe to relax in for a while, but the first one he entered had no tables left for him. Following the map app on his phone to the next closest cafe, Yeo-woon crossed a street and ended up in a more residential area.

‘Is there really a cafe around here?’

The buildings all looked expensive and fancy, so he wouldn’t have expected a normal cafe to be around here. He checked and re-checked his map, just to make sure he wasn’t in the wrong place, because the atmosphere here was very different to the crowded industrial district on the other side of the street.

‘Is this restaurant hidden within a building? There’s so few pictures and they only show the inside… So maybe it really is hidden.’

“…”

‘I think I’m lost. My map isn’t updating anymore either… It has to be close by, but there’s no place around here that looks like a cafe…’

“Ah, my internet…”

Yeo-woon repeatedly tapped on the compass function on his map, hoping to update where exactly he was, but it seemed the map app had given up on him entirely now. He tried turning his mobile data off and back on again, but there was no change and a quick check told him there was no local Wi-Fi he could connect to either… That’s when he noticed a man squatting on the asphalt, some paces ahead of him.

‘Okay, let’s just ask for directions.’

He was probably someone that lived around these parts and would know where to find the cafe. Yeo-woon carefully approached the man, ready to crouch down so they could talk eye-to-eye, when he suddenly heard a camera’s shutter.

“...?”

Click, click, click, click, click, click!

Yeo-woon’s steps slowed as he heard the noise again and again, like the man was taking a neverending string of photos. Once he got even closer, Yeo-woon saw the man was holding a cell phone the size of his own palm, and the subject he was photographing so zealously was a kitten, small enough that it was the same height as the phone dangling in front of it. The tiny black thing was enthusiastically eating something, its whole head nearly disappearing in a bowl that was probably more used to housing side dishes than cat food. When the cat heard the shutter go off, it raised its head and looked right at the man, who covered his mouth and muttered something under his breath.

‘Looks like he’s busy feeding that cat. Is it okay for me to interrupt? Or should I try to find a different person to ask?’

As he thought through his options, Yeo-woon looked up and down the street, but there was no other living creatures around, other than himself, that man and his kitten.

‘I can’t keep going like this…’

He still had a little more than an hour left and his legs were starting to hurt from searching for a cafe and he still needed to walk back to his interview afterwards. So, Yeo-woon quietly approached the man, who had his back turned to him, and tapped him on the shoulder.

“Ahhh! What is-?! Why?!”

“….”

The man got way more spooked than Yeo-woon had expected him to, flinching hard and even falling on his butt. A part of Yeo-woon wanted to apologize right away, but after hearing a scream that loud, he was rendered speechless. With a reaction like this, people would think he’d tried to burn the man alive, not tapped his shoulder to ask him a question.

“Who are you?!”

The man fiercely glared at him, his expression radiating more distrust than Yeo-woon would have thought possible to convey, with just a person’s face.

Outside of that and his obvious shock, the man carried an air of tiredness and defensiveness, wearing black piercings in both of his ears. Even with a quick glance, Yeo-woon could tell there must be more than three on each side. And his forehead, clearly visible thanks to the hat that was holding back his hair, wrinkled more and more heavily, the more time passed.

‘Ah, that’s… scary.’

Yeo-woon gulped heavily, his own flawed prejudice telling him this had been a very bad mistake.

‘I think I might be screwed. Ahh I really picked the worst person…’

“It’s nothing.”

Yeo-woon gave an awkward smile and took a step away from this person on pure instinct.

‘I haven’t felt this way since college, when that group of high schoolers on motorcycles were trying to rob me…’

As a highschooler, he’d been really scared of elementary school kids, and in college, he became really scared of middle schoolers, but by now it had progressed and he was just scared of every young person that might not have a future.

Of course, this man wasn’t really the same as those high school robbers, but the way he glared at Yeo-woon still made him want to run for the hills.

“No, maybe there is something… That was a really loud scream, are you okay?”

“…”

“Uh, sorry for the surprise, sir.”

‘It’s not like I… hit him or anything. …Did I? I… just tapped his shoulder, right?’

By this point, the cat had fled the alley, knocking over the bowl in its mad dash to get away. The man stared after it and sighed, then he got up from his squat dusting off his legs. Yeo-woon hadn’t noticed before, because they were both squatted down, but the man was taller than him, which made him seem even more intimidating.

‘I didn’t mean to cause this. And I just lightly tapped him with my finger, didn’t I? That’s not like hitting someone, is it…?’

“I just wanted to ask where I need to go.”

“Map?”

Yeo-woon nodded and held out his phone that was still showing the map app and the cafe he had tried to reach. The man stared down at the screen with sharp eyes and then his eyebrows subtly rose.

“You’re going there?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“What? To get a coffee…”

‘Why does someone normally go to a cafe? Do you go to cafes to enjoy a nice bath?’

It was the sort of question a person could only ask, if they didn’t think about what they were saying. The man’s lips twitched a little, but he pushed them right back into their previous frown and then just turned his whole head away.

“…It’s not in this alley. This way.”

He took the bowl with the cat food, which still held a good amount of food in spite of how it got knocked over, and placed it closer to the corner of the alley. Then he lead the way out of it, without even a backwards glance. Yeo-woon felt like the awkwardness of this whole situation might kill him. Were all the people in this neighbourhood this rude, or did he find the one person who refused to be social?

‘Please just say something.’

Yeo-woon grumbled in his mind. But the man didn’t even look his way, too busy staring at his own phone, before he muttered a low:

“This game…”

They walked straight ahead, then turned left two blocks further down. The brightly labeled ‘Cafe Earth’ came into view, right at the entrance of the street. When Yeo-woon turned back to thank the man for his help, he could only watch him speed off towards a different building, further away. He had nearly reached its door already, so he must’ve left Yeo-woon behind as soon as the cafe became visible.

‘Ah. Dude, you really have zero social skill.’

With that complaint out of the way, Yeo-woon finally got to enter the cafe. In the end, the coffee’s taste was fairly average and the same went for the atmosphere. There was a decent variety, but the most surprising part was that all the seats were full.

‘Wonder how they do this. Is it thanks to some secret sales technique?’

Over the next 30 minutes, Yeo-woon mindlessly doodled on some paper as he mentally reviewed the potential interview questions and what answers he should give. When he came back to reality, he stared in surprise at the paper. Without noticing it, he’d drawn a glaring, defensive-looking man onto it.

“…”

‘What… Why did I draw this?’

After looking the drawing over for a bit, Yeo-woon used his pen to poke the small dot under the drawing’s left eye. Then, he flipped the paper over.

My partner and I both like this idea a lot. We've played together for over a decade and tend to like a lighter, looser style of gaming/DMing. Keeping hit points [for the most part] consistent for the first 4 levels would make low level fights more strenuous for PCs, and feels like it would be easier to DM as well.

I also like the idea that what would usually be a small boost, like the temporary hp you noted, would become a more important resource. Basic healing potions and low level cure spells would feel more impactful. Players who want some level of resource management but not encumbrance-levels of minutia might find a happy medium here. As a player, I want more interesting things than encumbrance and maximum lift weight to keep track of: small effects, minor items, and maybe a class ability. Again, I prefer a game that's lighter on the rules. I'm generally removing more from D&D's ruleset than I'm adding to it or modifying it.

I've seen low level parties do some really resourceful things with wonkier magic items (oh beloved alchemy jug), and I love the creativity it encourages.

So thumbs up to this idea from 2 veteran rpg-ers, worth mulling over more.

Another random mechanics thought: I think d&d combat feels the best around levels 3-8 because it threads the needle between characters having juuuuust enough health that they don't go down in one or two hits in the early game, and being completely untouchable by mundane enemies when they reach higher level. In the 3-8 zone health is still a finite resource but the party can mitigate the loss of it by playing well.

Imagine a system where hitpoints/Hitdie were based off proficiency bonus rather than level (so 2xMax class HD+con for levels 1-4, 3xMax class HD+con for levels 5-8). It would mean that low level threats (wolves, bandits, minor dungeon traps) stay mechanically relevant as the party goes on, meaning that you're not forced to jump ahead to monsters with CR twice the party's level just to make combat consequential. It also might save boss battles against big solo monsters (giants, casters and the like) as the ability for an enemy to do large amounts of single target damage risks putting one of the party temporarily out of the fight and saving the boss from its usual fate of dogpiling.

Obviously you'd have to tinker with how damage numbers worked (only rolling damage once for an AOE and distributing it evenly across targets) , but I think it's workable.

This system would put a spotlight on temporary hitpoints, which would be far easier to get by staying in taverns, using limited supplies, playing into a survival element that's sadly lacking in the exploration side of gameplay. To draw from a bit of dungeon meshi/monster hunter influence, I could even imagine saying that the flesh of certain magical beasts when properly prepared and consumed could permanently boost a character's max HP, creating a natural questhook as the heroes go out of their way to track dangerous targets for the hope of tasting the literal breakfast of champions.

I might try this in a minicampaign in the future and see how it goes, but I'd be interested to hear what y'all think in the comments before that.
