Bonus Cruiser
Tumblr media
CL-154 class, the improved Juneau class AA cruiser, and the ultimate evolution of the Atlanta Class design.
"When we took a gander at the Worcester class cruiser, we saw how it was intended to combine the best features of the 6" Cleveland class and the 5" Atlanta class. However, even with the development of the large and powerful Worcester class, the United States Navy was not entirely finished with the Atlanta class."
Tumblr media
Note: an earlier version of class was added to World of Warships as the Austin class, although they were never given a class name. I've added some renders to give an idea of what the ships might have looked like in service.
"Seeing the value of a light cruiser devoted to anti-aircraft firepower, the United States began the development of a new cruiser armed with the latest 5 inch guns.
During World War 2 (first records appearing in 1942), the United States was working on an improved version of the 5 inch/54 gun (Similar to the ones used on the Montana and Midway classes). This gun, while retaining the excellent ballistics of the 5 inch/54 caliber gun would also have the advantage of a new mounting with automatic loading.
Tumblr media
Several preliminary designs were developed, all of them resembled the Atlanta class, with three twin turrets forward and three aft. Turrets 2,3,4, & 5 were superfiring, giving the cruiser exceptional firing arcs. Some preliminary designs had two additional 5 inch/54 caliber guns in twin turrets amidships while other designs swapped them with quadruple 40 mm Bofors. Interestingly, like the initial cruisers of the Atlanta family, two quadruple torpedo launchers were carried.
While the Atlanta class cruisers were overweight, the new design had the advantage of a larger, more stable hull. The preliminary designs from 1944 were 580 foot in length and displaced 8550 tons, larger than the Atlanta class at 541 foot and 6718 tons. A powerplant of 100,000 shp would propel the ships at speeds approaching 35 knots.
Tumblr media
However, experiences with Kamikaze attacks influenced the anti-aircraft cruiser design further. The initial light anti-aircraft battery of 40 mm and 20 mm weapons was to be removed (In addition to the torpedo tubes). The space would then be used for the 3 inch/70 caliber Mark 26 guns then in development. These weapons were further improvements of the 3 inch/50 caliber guns, featuring better ballistics and a higher rate of fire. Six to eight twin mounts were to be carried.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These new weapons added additional weight and the cruiser had to be slightly enlarged. Twelve 5 inch and potentially up to sixteen 3 inch anti-aircraft guns (Some of the final designs still have a small number of 20 mm guns as well) required a hull of 610 foot in length. Full load displacement was not calculated to be almost 12,000 tons at full load. The powerplant was enlarged (producing 110,000shp) to maintain speed.
Tumblr media
Six cruisers of the new design, designed the CL-154 class, were ordered initially. However, the anti-aircraft cruisers were given a lower priority compared to the Worcester class and their 6 inch automatic guns. In addition, a new class of destroyer leaders, armed with rapid-fire 5 inch guns, was designed alongside the cruisers. This class, eventually becoming the Mitscher class, was seen as cheaper and almost as useful as the anti-air cruisers.
Tumblr media
Due to these factors, the CL-154 class went through a tumultuous period during 1945 when they were cancelled and then reordered several times. It was only at the end of 1945 with the end of World War 2, that the cruisers were canceled entirely. Unlike the other new cruisers (Worcester and Des Moines class), no examples of the CL-154 cruisers were ever built.

11 December 2020
As the Food and Drug Administration advisory panel has formally recommended that the Pfizer vaccine be given emergency use authorization, approximately 125 people are dying from COVID-19 every hour in the United States. The level of testing continues to lag as the national positivity rate has climbed over 11 percent.
The approval of the life-saving vaccine will have little impact on the current pace of fatalities raging through community after community across the nation over the next several months. “The reality is the vaccine approval this week’s not going to really impact that I think to any degree for the next 60 days,” Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield said Thursday. If projections hold, more than 500,000 Americans will have died from COVID-19 by the end of March.
The statistics are staggering.
There have been 16.2 million people in the US confirmed infected with COVID-19, 5.5 million in just the last 30 days. Over 300,000 have succumbed to this deadly disease. The seven-day average of deaths has reached 2,425 per day. The last three days running, COVID-19 deaths have hovered near or exceeded 3,000. On Friday, six states had more than 10,000 new cases, with California registering a one-day high of 37,143 cases with an exponentially accelerating trajectory.
The COVID Tracking Project reported that there are currently 108,044 people hospitalized with COVID-19. Almost one in two patients admitted to the ICU is for COVID-19. This is up from one in 10 in September. A recent report by the US Department of Health and Human Services showed that as many as 200 hospitals had reached full capacity last week. One-third of all hospitals reported their ICU occupancy was above 90 percent.
Repeatedly, public health officials and epidemiologists have sounded the alarm. Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, told CNN, “What we have seen over the last few weeks is a sharp rise in infections. And what we know—from the beginning of this pandemic—is infections are followed by hospitalizations, which are then followed by death.”
Dr. Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy and a member of President-elect Joe Biden’s COVID-19 advisory board, warned Thursday that the surge in cases would continue through January. “However, it’s likely that until we see substantial rates of vaccination, high numbers of cases and deaths will occur for at least the next 5 to 6 months,” Osterholm tweeted.
Neither scientist followed up their dire warnings with a call for a lockdown of nonessential production, even to provide health systems breathing room. While Congress has been able to approve a record $740 billion budget for the military, a billion-dollar emergency program to build a national public health infrastructure with an adequate number of tests and contact tracers is inconceivable.
The situation is particularly severe in California, with more than 1.5 million cases and nearly 21,000 deaths. Hospitalizations across the state are at record levels. ICU admissions are up 70 percent from two weeks prior. As in the spring, elective surgeries are being canceled to make room for COVID-19 patients. Jan Emerson-Shea, the vice-president of the California Hospital Association, told the Associated Press on Thursday, “Canceling elective procedures [like heart valve replacements or removal of tumors] really is a last-resort option. However, in the midst of this current surge, which is the largest to date, some hospitals may have no choice.”
Los Angeles County reported an alarming 13,718 new cases on Friday. Barbara Ferrer, the county’s public health director, called it the most dangerous time for the region. San Gabriel Valley, South Bay, the Westside, and central Los Angeles have seen more than 200 percent increase in infections since late September. The ICU availability in Southern California is down to 7.7 percent. In the San Joaquin Valley region, hospitals are reporting only 1.9 percent availability in ICUs.
US hospitals are facing severe staff shortages. Traveling intensive care nurses are seeing their pay double or even quadruple. Despite finding ways to expand hospital capacity, such as in Reno, Nevada, where the parking garage of Renown Regional Medical Center was turned into a 700-patient COVID unit, staff shortages are straining health care systems’ ability to treat patients.
Parth Bhakta, chief executive of NurseFly, told the Financial Times, “Major health systems in all 50 states are scrambling to figure out how to cope with the surge in cases to all-time highs. We’re seeing the situation significantly more dire than what it was in April.” Many nurses are quitting their positions to pursue these lucrative temporary traveling positions. More impoverished hospitals and those in rural areas face the brunt of this exodus as they are unable to afford the higher rates.
However, many health care workers are leaving their positions due to exhaustion and PTSD, traumatized by the repeated waves of COVID-19 patients and deaths. This is not dissimilar to the phenomenon suffered by soldiers deployed to war zones.
As deaths mount, morgues throughout the country are reaching capacity as they had in New York City and El Paso, Texas. For instance, Idaho Governor Brad Little stated that COVID-19 is now the leading cause of death in the state. Little reported, “In multiple counties, the morgues are full, and they are starting to ask for refrigerated trailers to hold the bodies.” Yet, with the Christmas holidays in less than two weeks, things are expected to turn for the worse.
In Springfield, Missouri, Mercy Hospital is putting to use a mobile morgue used in 2011 after a deadly tornado killed more than 160 people in the city of Joplin. The Star Tribune in Minneapolis noted that there had been a 40 percent increase in “the number of pages dedicated to paid obituaries in November.” Peoria County, Iowa, coroners have reported that morgue capacity is at a critical stage. The National Guard has set up a 250-bed field hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Living with shyness.
There is a line from Lee Marvin,1970 no1 hit,Wandrin star. From the film Paint your Wagon. “Do I know where hell is,hell is in Hello” For me that has been very true. Especially with strangers and people I do not know well. Just recently I rang the garage up,to book my car in for its annual MOT and service, something I do ever-year.
Yet the act of picking up the phone, terrified me,as thou I was expecting the Spanish Inquisition.
I have suffer from shyness, lack of self confidence, low self esteem&belief most of my life. And have found inter person interactions&small talk difficult.
It has impacted of the quality of my life. Where today,I feel alone at times. Not having a real close friend or social life. Sometimes,I wish I had lead a normal life, with friends,a social life, wife and family. It has even impacted my relationship. Being a contributing factor(thou not only one) in the break up of my relationship.
A lot of it seems from my childhood. My parents especially my mum use to tell me that the world is a dangerous place, full of evil people etc. I remember walking along the road, when I was about 5 or 6,and innocent said friendly hello to somebody.
My mum was furious me,telling me for talking to strangers. It was thou I had insulted him, instead of a friendly hello.
At School I found it difficult to fit in and make friends. There were several reason.
One,being that I struggled with my reading and writing. I was behind with them. Also I use to lose day dream and lose consecration. Something I still struggle with today.
I had special English classes, and when I enter secondary school. I attended the special English group, which was unfortunately refer to by other kids,as the divi English group.
Secondly,I struggle with my speech development. I had my tonsils and adenoids removed in 1974,when I was 7yrs old to help my speech development and in 1976,I to speech therapy,to try and improve my speech. Also had test to see if had a hearing difficulties. My hearing was normal, just sometimes when people talked to me,I was unresponsive. And that still occurs to this day. Sometimes someone would speak, yet I am somewhere else, even thou I do hear them,I  just doesn’t register. It may the combination of these, which may have made me seem slow and stupid. That’s is why never fit in at school. It is no wonder,I started to withdraw and started to live in my own fantasy world.I still today, feel like an outsider trying to fit in,feeling like I am an alien, stuck on an alien planet. Also struggled to fit in to the so call ‘mans world and lads culture’Having been brought up with a younger sister, and the cousin I spent the most with, where both my mums younger Sister and my dads younger sisters children. Who were all girls. I do have male cousins, thou I did not see them as often and were a lot older. That’s why I always felt more comfortable around woman then Men.I developed deep shyness as I moved into my teenage years, preferring to spent time watching TV in my bedroom, or watching trains and latter got into train spotting. I have always love railways and aviation. My parents never drove,so travel a lot on day trips to the coast and holidays by train,so fell love with railways. And I do still today, even thou no longer train spotting. Missed out on what teenagers did when I was a teenager. I remember my sisters 17th birthday party out our house,in 1985,I was 18 at the time. My sister is the total opposite, she can talk for England. She could meet someone and within a few minutes,be chatting away,as thou they know each other for years. Anyway,I got ready had a shower and dressed, and then never left my bedroom! Because I was to terrified to go down stairs. As started in employment,a certain amount of inter action were necessary, and I did try socialise a bit more. Thou as I mentioned earlier, never felt at home with the ‘lads culture’ I prefer small groups, the larger the group, the more invisible I feel. More irrelevant and not having anything interesting to say. Also of course,I started dating. In the Early 90s,I started to read self help books. And in 1999, I attended my first of person growth/self improvement workshop in Oxford. Also in London as well. I meet some wonderful people during this time and made some friends. While our backgrounds, life style and issues varies widely,we were kindred spirits for being there. Also during this time I stared to seeing a therapist about my confidence issues, between 1999 & 2001. For me the turn of the millennium,in my early 30s,was the most happiest and when I felt the most growth and self confidence.
One of the people I meet on that first day,in Worcester College Oxford was my late friend Rachel. We became friends and confidents. We regularly talk of the phone and regularly wrote letters. Express my feeling and thoughts. It was good to have friends who did not know your life, family, work place or ex-girlfriends. Where you could share your deepest feelings. Also about life in general and the nature of happiness.
For also during this time,I began to see that my shyness, while been a blight on my life was also a gift. Not being part of the ‘herd or crowd’ I saw thing differently, especially what makes people happy. That it dose comes within, it also allowed me to appreciate the simply things in life, like nature,my walk around Virginia Water lake,Richmond park, trips to the coast etc. This lead me to the love of taking pictures especially with arrival of the digital era. I not a photographer, just a happy snapper.
Not just Rachel, but some other wonderful people. One the best days of my life came in November 1999,when meet up with a group of them in a cottage,in hills outside Stroud in Gloucestershire. We talked about anything and everything. I felt for once, belonging. In Jan 2002,I made my first trip to New York. Just 4months after 9/11. To attend a workshop, ran by someone who workshop I attended in London in the summer of 2001. This gave me an insight about confidence being relative. I been on my own to NY, 3times now. I love NY. Yet I know confident talkers, would not do that, some who are scared of flying.
Slowly the friends and growth and happiness started to slip away, from around 2004/5. I started to lose contact with my friends and even with  Rachel, became increasingly infrequent,to point where I found out, that she lost her battle with cancer in 2006, from an article on the internet. Which made feel sad, knowing that I did not know her in the last months of her life. She was only 50.
Generally I like to think of myself,as a cheerful happy person, which I am most of the time. Thou I do suffer from deep downs, when I feel like reverting in my own little bubble and push the world out.
When I move into my own flat in 2007, I began to revert inwards, slowly losing the joy, happiness, connections and confidence, I gained at the turn of the millennium.
My flat became my own personal sanctuary from the outside world. Living opposite a McDonald’s and close to supermarkets, junk food became a convenient. And started to put on the lbs,and a shroud around me to keep my confidence in,and people out. By the time I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2017,I was over 17stone. That is well over 4 1/2stone heavy, that in the year 2000.
By the end of 2019,I got down to 16st. When I November 2019,I had a mini breakdown thinking about my life, feeling that I have wasted it and some of the thing I have done to sabotage my life.
I planned to get back on track for 2020. By losing weight,my goal was to get below 13st,by the end of the year. And to go to San Francisco. Well 2020,has not turned out the way I planned, with COVID-19. And the uncertainty it has brought, where I still not certain I will a job in 2021. Thou as of Nov2019. I have got down to 14 1/2stone.
My goal for 2021,is to get down to below 13st. No matter what happens at my job. Hopefully I will still have my health. Losing weight may help control my diabetes, and lose the shroud surrounding me and I can find self confidence, and friendship and hopefully in the spring of 2022,go to San Francisco. Yes the future in uncertainty, yet I shall face it with a smile, well most of the time anyway. I know I will still have my set backs, and indeed still fall into the pit of depression from time to time. The most important thing,is to have belief in my self and accept, that shyness for better or worst, will continue be a part of my life,it is who I am.

“The argument that public transit should be free—that it is a basic need—is bubbling up in lots of places these days, as city officials cast about for big ideas to combat inequality and reduce carbon emissions. Some among them cast transportation as a pure public good, more like policing and less like toll roads.
Around 100 cities in the world offer free public transit, the vast majority of them in Europe, especially France and Poland.
A handful of experiments in the United States in recent decades, including the cities of Denver and Austin, were viewed as unsuccessful because there was little evidence that they removed cars from the road; new riders tended to be poor people who did not own cars, according to a 2012 review by the National Academies Press.
But in another sense, they were successful: They increased ridership right away, with rises between 20 and 60% in the first few months. That statistic accounts for its revival among a new wave of urban progressives, who see transit as a key factor in social and racial inequality.
“Think about who is using our buses: It’s black people, folks who live in communities where there are deep, deep concentrations of poverty,” said Kim Janey, who was sworn in last week as the president of Boston’s City Council and has proposed waiving fares on a key route through some of the city’s low-income neighborhoods.
Tumblr media
“The City Council in Worcester, Massachusetts’ second-largest city, expressed strong support last week for waiving fares for its buses, a move that would cost between $2 million and $3 million a year in lost fares. And fare-free transit is the splashiest policy recommendation of Michelle Wu, a Boston City Council member who is expected by many to run for mayor in 2021.
Larger experiments are underway in other parts of the country. The cities of Kansas City, Mo., and Olympia, Wash., both declared that their buses would become fare-free this year.
The argument against fare-free transit is a simple one: Who is going to pay for it?
In communities where ridership has been falling, the cost of waiving fares may be less than expected.
Mayor Daniel Rivera of Lawrence, intrigued after hearing his friend Ms. Wu speak about fare-free transit, asked his regional transit authority how much was collected on three of the city’s most-used bus lines. The answer was such a small amount — $225,000 — that he could offset it from the city’s surplus cash reserves.
“What I like is the doability of this, the simplicity of it,” Mr. Rivera said. “We are already subsidizing this mode of transportation, so the final mile is very short. It isn’t a service people need to pay for; it’s a public good.””

Grounds for Success
There is a common misconception that to make money you need to have a white collar job. However there is money to be made in blue collar jobs such as landscaping. Mark Flagg is the owner of Flagg’s Landscaping and Irrigation in Beverly, Massachusetts. Flagg can often be seen performing the tasks that his crew members are doing. Whether it is installing a sprinkler system, laying bricks, or mowing a lawn. Flagg has been working in the landscape industry for 50 years.
When I approached Flagg he was taking out bricks from a patio and replacing them at Misselwood on Endicott’s campus. Flagg greeted me with a jolly hello and explained what he was doing. Flagg is an old school landscaper, who believes that the job should be done efficiently and quickly. When asked when he would be done for the day he said around 4:30 p.m., then he joked after the work was done he would go home because it’s “miller time”. He of course is referencing how he would crack open a Miller Lite after work.
According to Flagg’s website Flagg has been serving his clients since 1988. The website mentions that the services that are offered are landscape construction and hardscape, irrigation, landscape lighting, and landscape maintenance. Flagg’s website also lists testimonials, one testimonial is from Keith Buckley of Endicott College. Buckley said the following, “For the last 20 years Flagg’s Landscape & Irrigation has provided tremendous support to the grounds department at Endicott College. Mark’s courteous and professional staff always gets the job done often under tight time frames”. Another testimonial that is listed on their website mentions a client who is beyond satisfied with their irrigation work. Peter F. of Boxford, Massachusetts says the following, “I am writing to thank you for the excellent job that you and your crew did on our lawn in Boxford. The sprinkler system works perfectly and the grass is greener and thicker than we could have hoped for”.
Flagg began working in landscaping in 1970 at Arello Inc in Worcester, Massachusetts which is where he is from. Flagg attended UMass Amherst, where he was a Geology Major he enjoyed the field trips and labs but soon realized in his second year he wanted to change majors. He then transferred to the department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning, which contained his major Urban Forestry and Park Management. Flagg’s passion for landscaping, as he explains it, “stems from my desire to work outdoors”.
Flagg has had numerous outdoor jobs including being a ski lift operator, working on a dairy farm, and working in arboriculture and landscaping. A typical day for Flagg looks like the following. Flagg gets up at 5:30 a.m., then eats breakfast, does some office work, and checks emails. Then Flagg bikes his four mile commute to work from his home on Hale Street to his office on Dix Way in Beverly Farms. Once he gets to work Flagg checks in with his crew and goes over the day’s objectives, assists with logistics materials and equipment. The last thing Flagg does is meet with clientele, as well as taking sales calls and job estimating and then making purchasing decisions. When discussing how Flagg builds clientele he said that he uses online, website, word of mouth referral, sales calls and print advertising.
The most challenging part of being a landscaper is as Flagg explains it, “finding qualified individuals who possess a desire to learn and succeed in the landscape industry. Flagg added, “there is low ball competition and it’s a $200 billion dollar industry”. The toughest landscaping job Flagg has had to do is snow and ice services, which they no longer offer. When asked about what makes landscaping enjoyable, Flagg replied, seeing the project to completion. Flagg replied, “ It’s very satisfying to complete a project transforming a raw site into something that is aesthetically pleasing and functional”.

JACOBIN MAGAZINE
Labor movements emerge from class conditions. This seems easy enough to accept but too general to provide solutions to US labor’s problems. If we turn to history, it would be hard to argue that major advances or retreats were caused by just one factor — be it economic, political, or organizational — rather than many. Most important labor histories, from E.P. Thompson’s Making of the English Working Class to Jefferson Cowie’s Stayin’ Alive, center on the idea of multiple causality, or what Louis Althusser called “overdetermination.” These authors drill down beneath quantitative indices of social change to the qualitative dimensions of everyday life. They find — again and again — that cultural practices, such as “blue Monday” among nineteenth-century craftsmen, or “disco sucks” events in the 1970s, helped accelerate or inhibit working-class action.
So far, however, most of our contemporary thinking on union decline and renewal has sidestepped this question (with notable exceptions, like the work of Paul Buhle). We focus heavily on unions’ internal structures and organizing strategies while integrating accounts of political economy, labor law, and worker demographics. A common, unstated assumption is that if only the right organizing model, legislative reform, or economic conjuncture presented itself, workers would burst forth in a new wave of membership and militancy. What is left unexamined are the ways precarious employment and the rise of a host of substitute activities have reshaped workers’ practices, identities, and their willingness to take collective action.
In 2015, I went to Woonsocket, Rhode Island, with these questions in mind. It was a storied center of textile production in the early twentieth century and of militant, social-democratic unionism in the 1930s and 1940s. But it had fallen on hard times, suffering the ravages of deindustrialization and failed attempts at renewal, though over a longer time frame than Flint or Detroit.
My visit was not purely academic. During my teens, I had lived in a neighboring town where people looked down on Woonsocket. Earlier, growing up near Lowell, Massachusetts, I spent almost every school trip touring its textile museum’s sanitized version of mill life. And before that, my grandfather and his generation had worked in Rhode Island mills. Though decades removed, his family’s culture still bears the marks of hardship, solidarity, and relative gender equality imprinted by that first wave of industrial capitalism.
When I walked Woonsocket’s largely empty Main Street with its iconic “Bienvenu” sign and scattered former factories, therefore, it was with more than a detached analytic gaze. I spoke with many residents — sixty, so far — and asked them about things I knew: work, wages, unions, politics. Everyone had something to say.
Artie, a forty-eight-year-old out-of-work carpenter told me, “These are hard times, bro. I’ve probably built a million houses, I’ve been a productive part of society, and for what? Some fucking asshole up in Boca Raton?”
Theresa, a forty-two-year-old single mother who had escaped an abusive relationship only to find a cold shoulder on the job market relayed her experience: “I filled out an application and they weren’t hiring anybody who didn’t have a college degree. They wanted people who are ‘future-oriented,’ they don’t want riff-raffs.’’
And Amanda, a mom in her twenties who had moved from Massachusetts for the cheap rent, recounted similar struggles applying for aid: “They denied me every single time saying that I make too much money. But when I open my fridge, I have no milk — like, I can’t afford to get it. I feel like I am always stuck under something. I’m stuck under the things that I can’t have.”
Deprivation was not hard to find. Nor were expressions of resistance and favorable views of unions. But beneath economics lay a deeper source of suffering that I was ill-equipped to understand. It provided both joy and pain in ever-shifting doses, and though more private in practice than union or political activism, it had clear social dimensions. I am speaking, of course, of opioid addiction.
Artie, who came from a “drug addict family” and said, “I do drugs and smoke weed,” was also adamant that “I’m not a heroin head; I’m not a fucking junkie.”
Theresa, who was on methadone when we spoke, found that heroin “helped me do what I’ve got to do. It gets me get through the day. If I could afford it, I would still be doing it.”
And as Kevin, a twenty-nine-year-old former convict and meat-packer explained it: “A few of my friends passed away this year because of the dope. Everybody is doing it — everybody. It’s the culture.”
Drug use and abuse were pervasive in the lives of Woonsocketers — their own, their friends’, their families’. It was a practice more immediate than wage exploitation and the struggle against it more salient than that against employers or the state.
At the level of culture, where identity is formed socially through channeling desire, substance dependence seemed to have replaced wage dependence, and recovery to have replaced unionism. This dynamic, buttressed by the confluence of union decline and overdose death at the national level, confounds most approaches to union renewal. It suggests that workers’ loss of power is no longer simply a deficiency to be corrected, but a problem that has bred its own answers. Responding to these answers in a way that overcomes shame while tapping the moral energy of recovery should be a central task of union activists.

Precarious Work, Distant Unions
When one thinks of New England labor, Woonsocket doesn’t usually come to mind. Places like Lawrence, Lowell, or Fall River might come first, followed by Manchester, Worcester, or Providence. Indeed, Woonsocket is diminutive compared to these peers: its population peak of 50,000 in 1950 was less than half of theirs.
But its primary industry — woolen and worsted textiles — had a longer, skill-dependent shelf-life than cotton-centered production. While those better-known cities’ labor movements were hobbled by the early flight of cotton in the 1920s and experienced the 1934 textile strike as a rearguard defeat, for Woonsocket it inaugurated an impressive rise of worker power under the Independent Textile Union (ITU).
The wolf finally came for woolen and worsted too, as employers headed south in the 1950s. But the intervening years allowed Woonsocket’s mostly French-Canadian working class to take part in the CIO upsurge and taste its material gains.
“[T]hese workers,” argues Gary Gerstle in his seminal history, “made the city … into what Fall River and then Lawrence had once been — the bastion of organized labor in New England.”
Under the leadership of Franco-Belgian socialist Joseph Schmetz and American-born Lawrence Spitz, the ITU organized 84 percent of Woonsocket’s workforce, achieved record wage gains, and sought to wrest control of daily life from employers and the clergy with an ambitious cultural program that Gerstle calls “working-class Americanism.” Though delayed by ethnic insularity and church-enforced piety, class, in something close to its Marxian form, happened in Woonsocket.
And class has continued to happen there, in ways less liberating. Unions have largely evaporated and work, for many, has become intermittent and low-wage. Jobs were something subjects endured and were compelled to constantly seek but were not a stable source of bonding or identity. Even more so unions: none were current members and only a handful had ever been, though many had relatives who were.
The unifying experience of work, once central to the formation of union consciousness, was broken if not absent entirely.
April’s history was illustrative. “I dropped out in ninth grade,” she told me, “and from there I’ve done all kinds of small tedious jobs like babysitting, mostly retail and customer service. That pretty much sums it up, that’s my life. Most of it has always been short term.”

Removing and replacing a toilet
Tumblr media
Empty the toilet
Turn off the toilet's water supply valve by turning the valve handle clockwise until it stops. Flush the toilet to empty the tank. Remove the tank cap and set it aside in a safe place. Wipe out the remaining water from the tank and bowl with a large sponge. Squeeze out the water in a bucket and repeat the process until the tank and bowl are dry.
Remove the mounting nuts
Using needle-nose pliers, disconnect the water supply hose that connects to the end piece of the fill valve on the toilet tank. Remove the porcelain or plastic caps on the floor bolts that secure the toilet to the floor (called cabinet bolts). Remove the nuts from the bolts using an adjustable wrench. If the nuts are rusted solid and cannot be removed, cut the bolts below the nuts with a hacksaw.
Pull the toilet
Have a helper help you lift the toilet bowl and tank from the bolts in the cabinet. Place the toilet on a soft, absorbent material, such as old towels or an old rug, or even a stack of newspapers, to prevent stains on the floor.
Check the flange
Carefully lay the toilet on its side or back, making sure the tank and bowl are supported. To avoid spreading wax throughout the house when disposing of the old toilet, it's best to scrape the old wax ring off the bottom of the bowl with a putty knife. It is also important to remove all the wax from the toilet flange on the floor.
Examine the cabinet flange. If it is damaged, you will need to replace or repair it.
Test the installation of the new toilet
Test the installation of the new toilet's base by temporarily placing it on the flange and checking that the toilet's screws line up with the holes in the base. Also, make sure the toilet is level with a 60 cm spirit level. If necessary, level the toilet by placing stainless steel or plastic shims underneath.
Remove the toilet and carefully place it upside down (if separated from the tank) or on its side or back (if the tank is attached) on a protective surface, such as an old rug.
Attaching the wax ring
Place a new wax ring on the horn (the raised ring around the drain hole at the bottom of the toilet) and press firmly until it is snug. Be careful not to damage the wax ring or settle the toilet with the ring until final installation. Once the ring touches the floor, it can no longer be used.
