Steve Kornet is western regional manager for Lincoln Lubrication Systems’ PESD operation. Lincoln provides the commercial and automotive business with lubrication equipment, fluid control techniques, pumping merchandise and technical service. It is important to know whether or not the lube truck might be used to “top off” car fluids or if it will be performing full fluid change. This will assist to determine lube truck the mandatory tank capability of the lube truck. If the lube truck shall be servicing automobiles at a remote web site and won’t be able to be refilled regularly, it will be sensible to specify higher-capacity tanks. ETT is exceptionally well known for their quality equipment, consideration to element and complete after-sales service.
This U.S. DOT permitted radial contains a universal tread pattern designed to improve traction and ship a cushty journey, whereas minimizing gas consumption. As the know-how and engineering that goes into mini-excavators continues to enhance, these machines provide larger promise of productiveness and return on investment for contracting companies of all sizes. Determining how much lube truck of your budget should go toward equipment maintenance is a tricky calculation, and totally different for every operation. Lincoln, by means of instance, powdercoats its reels to make them proof against water, dust and oils. Standard hose size is 50 feet with 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch diameter hose for many fluids.
A fuel/lube truck could be particularly custom-made to satisfy the wants of severe conditions which are generally present in mining and construction environments. Need a Lube Truck that has all of the fluids, instruments and equipment you need for your job? Knapheide Lube Trucks are modular, so it is not a one dimension suits all method.

Mini excavators: Small size, big popularity
Mini excavators are one of the quickest growing equipment types, with the machine’s popularity seemingly ever-increasing. According to data from Off-Highway Research, global sales for the mini excavator were at their highest point ever last year, at over 300,000 units.
The major markets for mini excavators have traditionally been developed countries, such as Japan and those in Western Europe, but the last decade has seen their popularity rise in many emerging economies. Most notable of these is China, which is now by far the biggest mini excavator market in the world.
Considering that mini excavators essentially replace manual labour, this is perhaps a surprising turnaround in the most populous country in the world where there is certainly no shortage of workers. Although all is perhaps not as it seems in the Chinese market – see the box out ‘China and mini excavators’ for more details.
One of the reasons for the mini excavator’s popularity is that it is easier to power a smaller and more compact machine with electricity rather than the traditional diesel power. It is the case that, especially in city centres of developed economies, there are often strict regulations regarding noise and emissions pollution.
There is no shortage of OEMs that are currently working on, or have released electric mini excavators – back in January 2019 Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) announced that, by mid-2020, it will begin to launch a range of electric compact excavators (EC15 to EC27) and wheeled loaders (L20 to L28) and stop new diesel engine-based development of these models.
Another OEM looking at electric power for this equipment segment is JCB, with the company’s 19C-1E electric mini excavators. The JCB 19C-1E is powered by four lithium-ion batteries, providing 20kWh of energy storage. This is enough for a full working shift for the majority of mini excavator customers on a single charge. The 19C-1E itself is a powerful, compact model with zero exhaust emissions at point of use and one that is considerably quieter than a standard machine.
Small machine is a relatively light and fast mechanical equipment. Like hand-held power tools, concrete vibrator, frog tamper, mini transporter, woodworking machinery, steel machinery, mini dumper, motorized dump truck, welding, etc. are all small machines.
In addition to large machinery and equipment in construction should pay attention to the safe use, to prevent injury, a variety of medium and small machines also have different degrees of danger, must be used in accordance with the safety requirements.
Going electric
JCB recently sold two models to London-based J Coffey Plant, with Coffey Plant Division Operations Manager Tim Rayner commenting, “The major benefit is no emissions at point of use. Our workers are not subjected to diesel emissions when using the 19C-1E. Confined areas are now clearer and safer to work in too, as there is no longer a need for emissions control equipment such as extraction units and ducting. The JCB electric minis bring value to the business and the industry as a whole.”
Another OEM looking at electric power is Kubota. “In recent years mini excavators powered by alternative fuel sources – such as electric – have seen a surge in popularity,” says Glen Hampson, business development manager construction at Kubota UK.
“The main driver behind this is that electric equipment gives the operator the ability to work in regulated low emission zones. Electric machinery can also enable work to be carried out in confined spaces underground without producing harmful emissions. It’s reduced noise output also makes it great for construction work in urban or heavily populated environments.”
Kubota launched a prototype electric compact mini excavator in Kyoto City, Japan, at the start of the year and Hampson adds, “At Kubota, our main priority will always be the development of machines that match the needs of our customers – the development of electric machines will allow us to do just this.”
Bobcat recently announced that it was launching a new R-Series mini excavators from 2-4 tonne with a new range of five compact excavator models: the E26, E27z, E27, E34 and E35z. One of the standout features for this range is said by the company to be the Cylinder-Inside-Boom (CIB) design concept.
According to Miroslav Konas, product manager, Bobcat Excavators Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), “The CIB system aims to overcome what has been one of the weakest points in any mini-excavator – the vulnerability of the boom cylinder to damage such as that caused by colliding with the sides of trucks and other vehicles when loading waste and building materials.
“It does this by enclosing the hydraulic cylinder inside an extended boom structure, thus avoiding collisions with the top of the blade and the sides of vehicles. In fact, the boom structure protects the hydraulic boom cylinder in any position of its movement.”
Wood chipper is a kind of special equipment for producing wood chips, wood chipper is also called wood slicer, which is one of the wood processing series equipment.
Trenching machine, such as mini trencher, is one of the main types of construction machinery, a kind of trenching machinery used in earthwork construction, widely used in agricultural water conservancy construction, laying of communication cables and petroleum pipelines, municipal construction and military engineering, etc.
Useful tools and machines in home agriculture also include log splitter, stump grinder, etc.
Operator comfort
With the lack of skilled operators in the industry, keeping those behind the stick happy has never been more important. Volvo CE claim that the new 6-tonne ECR58 F generation compact excavator has the most spacious cab in the industry.
Operator well-being, confidence, and safety are supported through a simplified workstation and user-friendly experience. The seat-to-joystick position has been revised and improved, while still being suspended together – a technic that Volvo CE says it introduced to the industry.
Designed to offer the highest levels of operator convenience, the cab features soundproofing, numerous storage areas, and 12V and USB ports. A fully opening front window and slide side window contribute to all-around visibility and operators have an automotive style jog wheel, five inch colour display and easy-to-navigate menus.
Operator comfort is indeed important, but another reason for the general popularity of the mini excavator segment is the ever-increasing range of attachments on offer. For instance, Volvo CE’s ECR58 has a wide range of attachments which are easy to switch over, including buckets, breakers, thumbs, and the new Tilt Quick Coupler.
Talking about the mini excavator’s rise in popularity, Chris Sleight, managing director, Off-Highways Research, highlights attachments, saying, “At the lighter end, the range of attachments available mean it [a mini excavator] is often favoured over workers using hand-held air-powered tools. This is partly because this can be helpful in reducing workers’ exposure to noise and vibration, and also because it removes the worker from the immediate vicinity of the tool.”
Sleight also adds that, “In Europe and even North America the mini excavator is replacing other types of equipment. At the top end of the scale, its smaller footprint and ability to slew through 360 degrees means it is often now favoured over backhoe loaders.”
Bobcat’s Konas agrees with the importance of attachments, saying, “The various types of bucket we offer are still the main ‘tool’ from among the 25 different families of attachments we offer for our mini excavators, but we see a trend developing with more advanced hydraulic attachments growing in popularity. That’s why we developed our A-SAC system, which together with up to five independent auxiliary circuits available on our machines, we believe makes Bobcat the most advanced brand on the market to operate such complex attachments.
“Combining the arm-mounted hydraulic auxiliary lines and the optional A-SAC technology together enables a wide choice of machine customisation options to match any attachment requirement, further enhancing the role of these excavators as excellent tool carriers.”
Remote monitoring as a growing trend?
Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) has published a white paper on the future of the compact equipment segment in Europe. In it they point out that 70% of the mini excavators sold in Europe are under three tonnes, helped by the fact that it is relatively straightforward to obtain a licence to tow one of these models on a trailer with a regular driving licence.
The White Paper predicts that remote monitoring will play an increasingly important role in the compact construction equipment market, of which mini excavators are an important part. The report says, “Tracking the location of compact equipment is particularly important, given that it moves frequently from one job site to another.
“Location and working hours data can therefore help owners, especially rental companies, with planning, enhancing efficiency and scheduling maintenance. Accurate location information is also vital from a security point of view – it’s much easier to steal a smaller machine than a larger model, and theft of compact equipment is therefore more commonplace.”
Different manufacturers offer various telematics packages with their mini excavators and mini roller; there is no industry standard. Hitachi mini excavators are connected to its remote monitoring system, Global e-Service, and the data can also be accessed via smartphone.
While location and working hours are key bits of information, the report speculates that the next-generation of equipment owners will want to view more detailed data. “Owners want access to more data from manufacturers. One reason for this is the influx of a younger, more tech-savvy generation of customers, who can better understand and analyse data to improve productivity and efficiency.”

Original Post from Security Affairs Author: Pierluigi Paganini
Experts observed an increase of the malware spreading using less-known archive types as dropper,in particular ISO image.Delphi wrapper makes analysis harder
Introduction
In the last period, we observed an increase of the malware spreading using less-known archive types as an initial dropper, in particular, ISO image.
The spread of threats exploiting ISO image to hide themselves is helped by the Windows functionality, introduced since Windows 8, which allows the user to easily mount this file type through a double-click on it.
Recently, our monitoring operations discovered an interesting attack wave leveraging this technique, especially due to the particular impersonification the attacker was trying: he/they was mimicking an important Italian Manufacturing company.
Technical Analysis
Figure 1. Phishing email content
The phishing email (Figure 1) has a well-designed body containing the enterprise logo and references about the impersonated company: its international reputation has been abused by attackers to lure the victim to open up the embedded attachment.
Surely the presence of an ISO file as attachment is suspicious, but for an unaware user it could go unnoticed, also thanks to the new Windows versions which natively support the filetype.
The Loader
Extracting the content of the ISO image, we encounter an EXE file named “po-ima0948436.exe”. From the first retrieved information, in particular the “BobSoft Mini Delphi” signature, it seems to be packed with a well-known Delphi packer (already studied by other popular firms). According to FireEye this packer is already used by different malware family, like Pony, IRStealer, Nanocore, Netwire, Remcos, nJRAT. Moreover, in our previous report we have already studied the Delphi wrapper, this time applied to a Nanocore variant.
Figure 2. Evidence of the Delphi wrapper
As expected, the malicious payload is stored in the resource section in encrypted way (probably using a simple XOR-encryption). This is one of the main features of the Delphi packer.
Figure 3. Encrypted payload, stored in Resource section
Rather than studying the payload extraction mechanism, we focused on the huge number of checks to detect the lab environment and, consequently, to make the analysis harder. The evasion tricks are surely part of initial Delphi packer; it probably was generated using a specific factory which allows the attacker to customize the features will be added to its weapon.
Once executed, the malware obviously kills itself detecting the analysis machine, so we are going to investigate what are the tricks employed to stop us. Using our custom tool, we are able to extract information about the high-level techniques fielded by the malware writer to evade the analysis.
Figure 4. High-level evasion techniques
The first trick exploits a well-known Windows API call, “IsDebuggerPresent” to check if the process is executed in debugging mode. Bypass this control is quite simple: using a debugger we can modify the return value of the API call, hijacking the malware control flow.
Figure 5. IsDebuggerPresent API call
Immediately after the first trick, the malware shows another technique to identify the fake environment, monitoring the cursor movements. The cursor movements, indeed, represent the presence of a user operating with the system. So, the malware can identify if it is executed in a sandbox evaluating the different position of the cursor in periodic time intervals. This can be done through a finite loop in which the process check the position using the “GetCursorPos” API call.
Figure 5. Check against the cursor movements
After that, the malware retrieves the list of all active processes. This list will be used later to identify the presence of programs belonging to analysis environment. The most popular strategy to obtain the processes list is to use the “CreateToolhelp32Snapshot” Windows function. The malware needs to navigate the list in order to create a buffer with the processes’ executable paths only (“svchost.exe”, “services.exe” etc.). So, it must invoke the “Process32First” and “Process32Next” API calls, enter in the PROCESSENTRY32 structure and extract the “szExeFile” field, containing the executable path name.
Figure 6. API calls to obtain the processes list
The information about the processes are stored to be processed in a second moment. At this point, the malware exhibits another evasion technique, but more advanced than the previous ones. Using the CPUID instruction, it tries to extract information about the processor and its features.
According to VMware specifications “Intel and AMD have reserved CPUID leaves 0x40000000 – 0x400000FF for software use. Hypervisors can use these leaves to provide an interface to pass information from the hypervisor to the guest operating system running inside a virtual machine. […] VMware defines the 0x40000000 leaf as the hypervisor CPUID information leaf”. So, calling the instruction with the 0x40000000 parameter (in EAX register), the query result is the “Hypervisor Brand” string, split into three different registers: ECX, EDX and EBX (shown in Figure 7).
Figure 7. Result of CPUID instruction invocation
As shown in the above figure, the result string is reversed: the malware needs to manipulate it to obtain the right information “VMwareVMware” (Figure 8).
Figure 8. String reporting the hypervisor brand
Using this information, the malware is able to check if it is executed on a virtualized environment comparing the string with the embedded ones:
XenVMMXenVMM (Xen VM)
prl hyperv (Parallels)
Microsoft Hv (Microsoft Hyper-V )
KVMKVMKVM (KVM)
VBoxVBoxVBox (VirtualBox)
VMwareVMware (VMware)
Figure 9. Embedded string used during the hypervisor check
Bypassed this check, the malware knows to be in a non-virtualized environment but it is not yet the time to pull out its malicious behavior! At this point, in fact, it reloads the old processes list, retrieved in a previous phase, to compare its entries with the hardcoded names belonging to programs used in malware analysis, like:
procmon.exe
ollydbg.exe
procexp.exe
windbg.exe
Figure 10. Check against malware analysis tools
The same is done with components belonging to anti-malware products, in particular Avast and AVG. The hardcoded components names are:
avastsvc.exe
avastui.exe
avgsvc.exe
avgui.exe
Figure 11. Check against anti-malware software components
The last check consists in the identification of defined strings, related to malware analysis environment, with the absolute path in which the initial EXE is located. If the path contains words like “sandbox”, “malware”, “sample”, “virus” and others, the execution flow terminates.
Figure 12. Check against suspicious strings in path
If all the checks are successful, the malware can show its malicious behavior. It creates a child process containing the same instructions of its parent, so it repeats all the checks just executed, but it has the only purpose of injecting the final payload in a new “iexplore.exe” process.
Figure 13. Active processes
Analyzing the process, it is possible to identify a suspicious thread starting from 0x00000000address. Probably the technique used to inject malicious code in the legit one is based on “CreateRemoteThread”, with which the malware is able to allocate memory in the legit process memory space, fill it with malicious instructions and force the victim process to start the execution of the new thread.
Figure 14. Injected thread
The Payload
The final payload is nothing more XpertRAT, a well-known Remote Administration Tool. When executed, it writes a copy of itself in a hidden folder named %AppData%Roaming{GUID},setting the persistence writing the HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun{GUID} with the location of the EXE just created.
Figure 15. Malware’s artifacts
In the below figure, it is possible to see the written registry key pointing to the executable to start at the next logons.
Figure 16. Malware persistence through registry key
In the same folder, there is a file named “ut” which is used by the malware as buffer to contain the exfiltrated data in “keylogging” mode, before sending it to the server.
So, the RAT tries to establish a connection to its C2, hosted at “thisurl.doesntexist[.]com”, waiting for new commands to execute on the victim machine.
Figure 17. Malware attempt to communicate
Unfortunately, the server seems to be down at the analysis time, so we can only inspect the network flow using a fake net. As shown in the following figure, the malware sends a TCP stream containing some parameters used at server-side to identify the client that tries to establish the connection.
Figure 18. Malware’s network traffic
Conclusion
Finally, the analyzed sample is a classic Remote Administration Tool which has a long list of capabilities, such as keylogging, remote desktop, command execution and other exfiltration abilities.
However, the interesting part of the analysis is surely the initial Delphi wrapper, which is full of advanced tricks to make the analysis harder. As mentioned before, this packer surely derives from some kind of factory which allows the attacker to choose the capabilities he wants. We, in fact, intercepted many other infections based on the same Delphi structure, but with different features in terms of evasion and encryption, as evidence of the possibility of customize it.
Technical details, including IoCs and Yara Rules, are available in the analysis published in the Yoroi blog.

Loaders Market Globally Expected to Drive Growth through 2027
Loaders are heavy machines designed for use at construction and mining sites to clean an area by removing waste material, such as debris, dirt, rocks, sand and mud and dumping it into another vehicle. Now a days, the demand for loaders is increasing, owing to numerous ongoing and upcoming construction & mining projects. The increasing number of malls, highways, and commercial & residential buildings are spurring demand for the loaders market. Offsite (also known as prefabricated or modular building) has also gained a trending opportunity for the loaders market, owing to less wastage of time and possible cost savings. Moreover, the green building concept for commercial & residential projects has started catching up. Manufacturers are making environment friendly structures to combat global warming.
Rural and semi-urban areas are shifting from labor intensive work to mechanization. Even in small construction projects, customers are opting for small backhoe loaders for earth digging, leveling and other work. Therefore, mechanization can create immense opportunities for growth of the loaders market. Government schemes, such as PMGSY, RDCs and NREGA have led to mechanization and the increased sale of loaders.
Loaders Market: Drivers
In developing economies, such as India, China, Brazil and Argentina, urbanization is taking place at a relatively fast pace and contributes to growth of the construction industry, which in turn will spur demand for the loaders market. With government support in providing loans and increase in FDI, investments and subsidies, the construction of commercial spaces is increasing day by day. Moreover, rising population has generated a growth in demand for residential areas, which will also support the demand for loaders.

Loaders Market: Restraints
Stringent emission norms related to construction & mining equipment are restraining the demand for loaders. Government agencies, such as EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) levy heavy fines on manufacturers who do not meet standard norms, primarily due to the reason that the construction industry uses more diesel engines than other sectors. However, these norms vary from region to region. For instance, new machinery in North America and Europe must comply with yet more stringent emission regulations as compared to other parts of the world.
Loaders Market: Trends
A majority of manufacturers are integrating GPS machine control systems into the design of loaders. Installation of machine control systems in their equipment helps improve efficiency and allows the user the ability of working remotely without being physically present on sites. Additionally, by reducing the need for rework and minimizing material wastage, machine control can help improve the sustainability of operation. Moreover, integration of GPS helps minimize injuries at construction sites. For instance, if workers use a GPS system for their equipment, it would enable them to work from a specific distance without being present at the site.
Renting and leasing also comprise a trending opportunity for the loaders market. These loaders are relatively expensive and hence, renting or leasing them is a feasible alternative as compared to purchasing them. Leasing opens up an opportunity for builders to customize the equipment for their project’s purposes and get high level personal advice and technical support.
Loaders Market: Segmentation
The loaders market can be segmented in a number of ways, two of the prominent basis of classification being product type and size.
On the basis of product type, the loaders market can be segmented into:
Backhoe Loaders
Wheeled Loaders
Crawler/Track Loaders
Skid steer Loaders

Masters of Technology
Building state-of-the-art “clean rooms” for high-tech corporations in Silicon Valley is vastly different than unclogging drainlines for those same companies, but these services — and many others — mesh quite well together at Therma Corp.
While some companies grow by doing one thing particularly well, Therma Corp. — a full-service mechanical contractor based in San Jose, California — has thrived by offering a wide array of high-level services to a core group of high-tech giants. It’s all part of a simple underlying business philosophy: Provide customers with whatever services they require.
The company’s services include engineering and design, plumbing, drain cleaning, HVAC, sheet-metal work, process piping, industrial and building control, and energy services. They cater to industries that make or develop biopharmaceuticals, semiconductors, cloud technology and artificial intelligence, says Mike Fisher, the company’s chief operating officer.
The company’s founders and owners, Joe and Nicki Parisi (president and chief financial officer, respectively) started out in construction back in 1967. But as their customers’ companies expanded — particularly high-tech firms — so did their services. “Joe would approach customers and say, ‘Yes, we’ll build what you need, but tell us what else you want us to do,’” Fisher says. “He’d tell them we can do anything from fixing a faucet to repairing a roof and everything in between.”
The Parisis sensed that technology companies in particular would grow quickly, so their core strategy centered on partnering with key technology customers in Silicon Valley and growing with them. “As those companies expanded their facilities, Therma Corp. was there to build and service them,” Fisher notes. “Joe Parisi often says that while it seems like he’s a brilliant businessman, he and Nicki just happened to be in the right place at the right time, but they also secured and kept really great talent that helped the company to grow.”
But even with more than 600 employees, seven strategically located satellite offices and high-profile clients like Intel, IBM and Genentech, the company has managed to maintain a down-home culture. “We’re the largest mom-and-pop shop you’ve ever seen,” Fisher says. “We’ve been able to maintain a family-owned business atmosphere.
“We emphasize open collaboration,” he continues. “We have a vast amount of resources, but unless you tap into them and communicate with the people next to you, you don’t receive the benefits. We also don’t micromanage employees. Instead, we recognize the value of their skill sets and give them the ability to go out on their own and succeed.”
Starting small
Plumbing and drain cleaning wasn’t initially a big part of the company. By 1997, 30 years after the company’s inception, Therma Corp. employed just two plumbers dedicated to service. But in 1998, the company hired three more plumbers and officially formed a service department. The initial focus was servicing backflow preventers, but as customers’ needs for line cleaning and inspections increased, the department followed the Parisi philosophy and expanded accordingly, adding more personnel and equipment.
“Our growth was slow, steady and sustained,” Fisher says. “It also was sheerly organic. We didn’t advertise — it was all word-of-mouth referrals.”
Today, the department generates about 10 percent of Therma Corp.’s annual gross revenue.
It services companies ranging from semiconductor and computer manufacturers to research-and-development and tech startups. The latter two offer the department an opportunity to follow the company’s overall strategy on a micro level: partner with potentially high-growth companies and grow with them. The company also does work for non-tech clients, including universities, industrial and commercial facilities, and food and beverage companies.
To serve those customers, the department relies on a Vac-Con combination sewer/hydroexcavation truck, a pipeline inspection truck built on a Ford F-450 chassis with an Envirosight Rovver X robotic crawler camera (the truck was built out by Haaker Equipment Co.), and eight trailer-mounted water jetters made by Spartan Tool (3,000 psi at 12 gpm).
The department depends on a 2016 Ford F-650 dump truck with 7-cubic-yard dump body manufactured by Scelzi Enterprises; a mini-excavator and a front-loader, both made by Bobcat; two 2015 F-450 utility trucks with bodies made by Scelzi; and 12 service vans, each equipped with full complement of RIDGID ProPress tools, a RIDGID SeeSnake pipeline inspection camera and a portable drain cleaning machine made by Spartan Tool.
High-pressure jobs
Therma Corp. works with a lot of companies that require clean rooms, which are sealed manufacturing areas that must be kept completely free of contaminants such as air-borne microbes, dust, chemical vapors and so forth. These rooms rely on tightly controlled pressurization, temperature and humidity levels and specialized filtration systems to eliminate entry of even submicron particles.
As such, it’s financially disastrous when a stoppage causes a waste line to back up into a manufacturing area, for example. When that happens, the manufacturing process stops and all the products may need to be destroyed. “If a semiconductor or pharmaceutical production line goes down, for instance, it could result in millions — if not tens of millions — of dollars in lost product,” Fisher explains. “So these customers require an exceptionally high level of service. That’s why we have seven strategically located remote facilities; they allow us to provide better response times. In our markets, getting to a customer in one hour instead of, say, two hours, is huge. If we get there within an hour, we often can help prevent product loss.”
While the pressure is on during such emergencies, these jobs also carry high upside, he adds. “If you can service a client and get them out of a jam, you’re usually the go-to contractor the next time they need something,” Fisher notes.
Therma Corp. has good success with retaining employees, which has benefited the plumbing service department because over the years, its workers develop unique skills and expertise. Most of the department’s technicians can do things like inspect and clean drainlines, modify controls and install pumps, to name a few.
“We’ve been able to develop very versatile technicians,” Fisher says. “But they also pick up other skills, like understanding how the utilities in plants affect the processes within the plants. Without that good understanding of what’s going on, it could have a disastrous impact on the systems tied to the utilities on which the technicians are working.”
Leveraging services
The plumbing service division benefits from Therma Corp.’s diverse service offerings. For example, technicians sometimes encounter jobs where repairs require parts made in foreign countries, such as Belgium or Germany. But instead of waiting weeks to gets those repair parts, craftsmen in, say, the machine shop might be able to fashion replacement parts.
“We have unbelievable capabilities within our various shops,” Fisher says. “For example, in our sheet-metal department alone, we have five industrial laser cutters. So we have the ability to recreate certain parts, like a pump enclosure that services a grease pit.”
In turn, the plumbing department often creates business for the HVAC department. “We call it cross-pollination,” Fisher notes. “Our divisions are constantly feeding off each other to give the highest customer service that no other contractors in our space can provide.”
In addition, plumbing service work also leads to new work for plumbing construction. The service technicians are limited by union agreements to only replacing or repairing existing pipes. So if new pipes are required, that directly benefits the plumbing construction department. Moreover, sometimes service technicians working on a failed pump might find outdated or damaged controls. “That’s when we call in our industrial controls department,” Fisher says.
The company’s multiple service capabilities even help the plumbing service department find quality skilled workers — a critical benefit in a field marked by a severe labor shortage. Instead of investing time and effort on recruiting new employees off the street, the department can cherry-pick good workers from the construction side of the business. That forces the construction division to hire more workers, but Fisher points out that it’s much easier to hire new construction workers than it is to find skilled plumbing service candidates.
“We already know that these construction workers share our company’s values and fit well with our culture,” he explains. “While not every construction guy will dig the odd hours dictated by our 24-hour emergency-response services, we can at least try them out.”
While the plumbing department has a well-established customer base, Fisher doesn’t rule out entering more new markets, such as providing services for high-density residential developments, which are booming in the San Francisco Bay area due to the high cost of real estate. “That comes with some risk because we’re not used to working in that space, so we have to be careful and determine if it fits well with our business model,” he says.
In addition, the burgeoning failure of urban infrastructure is creating business opportunities for line cleaning and inspections. “There’s not a union plumbing service company in the Bay area that has a CCTV truck or a combo vacuum truck, so that’s a big differentiating factor,” Fisher says. “We’re not quite sure how that might fit in our business model either. The last thing we want to do is tie up equipment on municipal sewer jobs to the point that we can’t serve our existing clients.” But the potential in that market is too large to ignore, he notes.
Looking ahead for the department, Fisher is bullish on the department because it generates consistent revenue with solid profit margins. Moreover, the business is constantly reoccurring. “That’s why we like to invest in our service divisions,” he says.
Therma Corp.’s business model — offering many services and partnering with growing companies also makes Fisher feel optimistic. Silicon Valley continues to be a hotspot for innovation in cutting-edge technologies, which continues to create good business opportunities.
“Now it’s autonomous vehicles, life sciences and artificial intelligence,” Fisher notes. “Before that it was solar energy and before that it was semiconductors. There’s always something new going on here, and we’re not dependent on any one industry. In addition, we’re very versatile — able to shift gears quickly and focus on customers’ needs. We have a lot of skill sets to offer that should remain in high demand.”
Exposing broken waste lines took workers down under
Therma Corp.’s plumbing services division has built a reputation for developing innovative solutions to problems experienced by high-tech Silicon Valley corporations. Recent jobs that involved confined-space entry under concrete slabs of large buildings offer a good case in point.
The problem: Silty soil underneath the buildings’ self-supporting slabs is settling — and damaging buildings’ waste lines in the process. “All the waste lines are suspended with rods and hangers under the slab and surrounded by pea gravel (backfill),” explains Mike Fisher, the company’s chief operating officer.
“But as the silt infiltrates the pea gravel, it locks up the gravel and sticks to the pipes,” he continues. “So instead of falling away as the ground settles, the pea gravel pulls the waste lines apart and the fill material gets into the lines.”
Under normal circumstances, workers would locate the line break, saw through the slab from inside the building, excavate the area and make the repair. But that’s not possible in the sensitive “clean room” environments at these corporations. “So we’ve gotten pretty good at hydroexcavating tunnels under the buildings,” Fisher explains. “We even have a manager dedicated to under-slab waste line repair.”
Crews use the company’s Vac-Con vacuum truck/hydroexcavator and a RIDGID SeeSnake pipeline inspection camera to locate the line breaks and tunnel under the slabs. An employee carrying the hydroexcavator’s wand and hose slowly burrows trenches to expose the lines. As he works, a vacuum hose sucks up debris created by the excavating.
“Sometimes they’re creating a 4-foot-wide excavation under the slab that’s 3 to 4 feet deep,” Fisher says. “If you’re just working in gravel, it actually goes pretty quick. On one job, we were able to dig 100 feet in one day. But that was under perfect conditions. You never know what you’re going to find under those slabs.”
After the pipes are exposed, repairs are relatively simple; cut off the hangers and damaged pipes, and install new hangers and pipe. But crews don’t use pea gravel to backfill the trenches. Instead, they use large chunks of Styrofoam. “It’s lightweight, easy to modify and it lasts forever,” Fisher says.
Fisher says these challenging hydroexcavation jobs illustrate the department’s depth of resources. “We have a lot of different parties involved to pull off these projects, which also require problem-solving skills,” he says. “And the vac truck has proved to be invaluable. When we first bought it, we didn’t think we’d be using it to tunnel under buildings.”
