Can We Discuss Feminism? (pt. 3)

Back at it again with everyone’s favorite topic: Gender equality and the political mechanics that go into putting out positive media representations of it. Ok, no, but I am going to be talking about like, actually political topics in how feminism is divided and characterized with feminist history, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t read it! Just might be a bit of a history lesson too.

I want to start by addressing SSO’s very first statement on this matter, because I think it’s important. When SSO launched, they said they weren’t going to add male playable characters because they wanted to make a space for women. And I talked about this in my genderlocking piece, but that still strikes a cord with me and I think we need to have that discussion. It shouldn’t be the final discussion, but it should be a discussion.

Media predominantly is genderlocked to males. Typically when a game is genderlocked to women, it’s either for very young kids kids OR it’s lewded for the (largely) male audience. And so there is something to be said about SSO being a game that is unapologetically in the feminine aesthetic focused on being a game for all ages that is about women. And I think that the conversation needs to be had that it is almost always these games like SSO where we see outcry about genderlocking and the expectation to uphold gender equality, but not so for games targeted at the male audience, or at least not nearly as loudly. And yes, the feminist movement has been the leading proponent of gender equality for all genders, but the expectation for only products aimed largely at a female audience to be held to a fully gender equal standard is in it of itself a double standard that we need to address. And while I feel for trans-men and non-binary folx being misgendered in SSO, I do think we need to acknowledge that better and hold the whole industry to a better standard on the matter, not just games like SSO.

That said, ending the discussion there is second-wave feminism. We are in intersectional feminism and the end point of intersectional feminism IS that all genders need to be equally represented. And so where that discussion does need to be had, and I think SSO should push it, it can’t end there. SSO needs to move forward with including more gender options when they have their character remodel and it can’t include genderlocking, because all companies need to do this if they don’t have fixed characters you’re playing as. Gender identity is important, and even if they can’t do neo-pronouns yet because of translation issues, having at least she/he/they as options should be the baseline moving forward and we should make sure all companies are held to that standard.

That said, I want to be fair and present solutions that have reasonable production turnarounds for the near future. The player remodel is years in the works, longer for the more gender options you have. So what can SSO do now?

First of all, pronoun tags. Even if the model doesn’t get updated yet, adding customizable pronoun tags that you can change anytime you want for the PC and set for horses is an important start that relies on technology already in the game.

While they’re at it putting in the coding for quests and generally doing another pass on quests since recent retcons have cut some things and left a few quests feeling a little jarring, start seeding that being a Soul Rider is a position you can earn and it’s not limited to the four Soul Riders we know now. Have the narrative actively challenge the traditions of the Keepers into being more inclusive as a narrative that needs to happen on gender equality with kids and teens.

One big step in this direction would be to make Justin a Soul Rider when he goes to South Hoof and connects with the Singing Yew. Expand the understanding of magic and introduce these questions early enough on that we start questioning what it means to be a Soul Rider as the Keepers insist on the traditional Soul Rider unit and where magic comes from and then follow up by traveling with Justin as he comes to terms with his new powers and his relationship with his mother and his recent choices to be someone who does good and THAT’s what a Soul Rider is following the Catherine journals. Use this to support Concorde being a mare and that not just being a bad plot hole and talking about this being about the soul and dedication and not just destiny and genderlocks.

I’ve already talked about this, but it is so important to move away from the current Soul Riders and introduce new ones. I love the main four, but as long as they are so central to the plot, the Soul Riders remain this reminder of a traditional centralized female led group. So while they should remain active agents in the story, we need to move towards recruiting more characters of more gender identities and make them active agents central to the story.

Not to mention, breaking down the Soul Rider being a limited four person unit makes way more sense for an MMO narrative and it opens it up to telling stories with your friends and other players in game without bending over backwards with canon. So like, by making these changes not only to you become more inclusive, but you also set up the groundwork for better game design in a multiplayer aspect.

I think the last easy thing SSO could do is add a choice of head accessory the player gets for free at the start of the game. None of these items give stats anyway, so it’s just a choice of a free option until the player models are redone. This way instead of just the helmet, players could choose between a pair of glasses, a head scarf, a hearing aid, a beard, and a mustache. All of these options should be free to pick up in Moorland so you can double/if you missed out, you can get them. But it’s a free way to add basic customization for people of multiple different walks with features mostly already in the game. Combined with pronouns, it’s a solution SSO could implement now to the game without a lot of coding.

And that’s everything for now. This topic is always going to be dynamic but it’s important to be had. Just be practical with the implication. Some of these are easier to add than others. An accessory shop could probably be added in a month using assets already in the game, but even updating pronouns would take months on the low end. Not to mention going back through the whole story to seed other gender changes. Push for change, always, but try to give steps that are achievable in the meantime.

TIPS TO DETECT & FIX BATHROOM LEAKS IN MICHIANA

Bathrooms leaks occur when poor installation procedures commence or inferior or incorrect products are used. HomeWorks Remodeling & Restoration have been in the building industry for years and over this time we have developed the best possible options in order to construct a structurally tight and waterproofed bathroom. Leaks can occur from fixtures, tile and grout installation and from general wear and tear. It’s extremely important that after each shower the recess and screen are wiped down with a squeegee, this will prolong the life span of your bathroom by 10 years. Water can be the evil of destruction if not dealt with in the correct manner. Any wet area that has a deluge of water, for example, the shower recess is the most common area in which damage is likely to occur. The purpose of waterproofing membrane is to prevent water from damaging the substructure in effectiveness the grout and tile glue making a loose tile apparently visible. However, there are products on the market the once tile glue becomes in contact with water saturation will not occur therefore, in my opinion, making waterproofing rendered useless. Shower recess Shower bases and prefabricated shower bases are the 2 types of bases generally installed within a bathroom. Shower bases should have appropriate bedding material beneath the tile alongside a substantial substructure. It only takes 1 mm of movement to occur therefore creating a hairline fracture in the grout line. This non-visible fracture will eventually open even further, therefore, creating damage to the substructure with water being the obvious culprit. A prefabricated shower base has similar circumstances however prefabricated bases are obviously one piece, therefore, will last longer. The Bathroom plumbing P or S trap is another form of a troublesome area if the drainage pipework isn’t aligned correctly during installation. I have known the rubber seals to last up to 30 years as long as the trap nuts are tightened by hand and finished off with footprints or multi grips. Water pipes in a shower recess can also cause damage. Pipes under pressure that are leaking are generally diagnosed quite quickly. The main problem being the pipework between the breach or flick mixer and the shower rose. This short length of pipework should be pressure tested before villa board or aqua check plasterboard is installed. Once the water from pipework begins to leak it will cause all sorts of damage to the framework, sheeting, subfloor, and screening working its way from the inside out. In this instance, there is nothing waterproofing membrane can counteract. The waterproofing membrane is only effective from the surface area in which water penetrates. It is always a good idea to have a check around the seals that are present in the shower region on a time to time basis since this where at times an undetected leak can turn out to be a serious issue of plumbing and later on cause trouble for you if not repaired on a timely basis. There can be major damage in case the water is said to be leaking on a constant basis and it comes into contact with the floor or the wall that has been surrounding it. In case if one leaves the problem as it is then it may soon turn out to be an expensive kind of plumbing repair work since the bathroom would then need to undergo an extensive renovation work for getting that issue fixed. In few cases it has been seen that the wooden floorboards, as well as the joists, are said to also be prone to the swelling and gradually they would start to rot which in turn can lead a costlier replacement project work wherein the shower tray or the enclosure would need to be removed completely so that the contractor can start the work right away. At times it may turn out to be difficult to spot out certain kind of leaks since the water would tend to disperse quite slowly. The leaks that come from the pipes are very difficult to detect in the first place and the reason is that these pipes are often hidden behind the walls or the paneling of the bathroom. At such times the first impression of any of these leaks would be the stains of water present on the ceiling of the bathroom. Bathroom flooring The vinyl flooring is meant to rot quite easily when it is exposed to an excess of water due to which it may often curl from the edges due to the exposure to the constant water. The floors which are tiled can also leak from the cracked tiles or there can be problems with the grouting structure. Hence you should ensure that such works are carried out by a licensed and well-experienced contractor since any kind of issues in this area would turn out to be major damage for the entire bathroom. Bath Drain Leaks that are present around the drains or the plugs are known to be the most common places wherein a leak can then form in the bathroom. Very often it has been seen that the water would leak very slowly such that it would make it quite difficult to get detected in the first instance unless it shows any signs of stains. The easiest method for testing the leakage of a drain or the bath plug is to plug a hole and then fill the bathtub with a little amount of water. After an hour check it back to see if there has been any change in the level of water wherein it has dropped or stays the same as earlier. If the water level has dropped, then it would become obvious that it is a potential sign of leakage even though it can be that the seal of the plug stopper wasn’t applied properly hence be sure to check that as well. It would be a lot cheaper than planning of ripping apart the entire bathtub only to find out that there was no damage below. These drain leaks are known to be quite a common thing with plastic or the fiberglass bathtubs. Similar is also true with the case of shower enclosures as well as the shower trays. The material is said to be much softer than the ceramic one hence it can move a bit as you may maneuver on top of it. This may also at times cause breakage to the seal which is present around the drain or the plug hole wherein it can allow for the water to escape out on to the below region. Tiling The tiles are also said to be prone to leak wherein it can also allow for water to escape through the grout or the silicone that has been damaged. On the section of the sinks or the basin it is mostly easier and it would also provide a clear view of what exactly is happening below the sink hence it is said that one can pour excess water around the top portion of the tap and also check the region wherein it would become easier in detecting where the leak is actually located and to get it fixed. Sink Drains The sink drains are known to start leaking in a similar manner as the bath drains hence one would need to follow a simple procedure for inspecting it from time to time. The excess water and accumulation of the puddles of water present at the base of the basin present on the floor are said to be quite an obvious sign that there has been a leakage there and it needs urgent attention. The Water Tower

Jury Report

The Water Tower is an extraordinary family second home in Norfolk, where a derelict structure has been brought back into viable use. It is situated above and to the north of the local village, down a lane, surrounded by fields. Its prominent position led to concerns from local residents about overlooking and light pollution, and the impact of inhabiting a structure that once provided functional utility to the village but lay dormant as a decaying local landmark.

The building is divided into two elements, in Kahn’s terms ‘served and servant spaces’: accommodation to the north, served by a stair tower to the south. Accommodation comprises ground floor kitchen/dining, two floors of bedrooms and an upper living/dining/kitchen tank room at the top.

The stair and lift tower has no windows and faces towards the village, resolving the overlooking and light issues. The stair is formed from two layers of CLT, with an interlayer spacer, with balusters reusing reinforcement from the original tank room. It is a delightful helical stair, spiralling within its rectilinear box and lit from a rooflight at the top. A glazed ‘bridge’ link provides access to the northern accommodation tower, with each room enjoying a fully glazed elevation looking out across arable fields. At the top, the stair tower gives access through a rooflight to a terrace above, with PVs and balustrading.

The new structure sits within the original metal framing and is made from CLT. It provides structural stiffness to the original tower, which had previously been provided by the weight of the water, but which otherwise would bend and twist under wind loading in its absence. The interior spaces within the new structure are exposed CLT, wrapped in corrugated reflective metal on the exterior. The interior has warmth and a visual ‘weight’ to it from the exposed CLT finish. Externally, the play of light on the corrugations and the reflectivity picking up the colour of the sky and passing weather is a delight. It is a complementary visual contrast to the ironwork of the original structure, which criss-crosses in front of it.

The upper tank room enjoys a ribbon window around three sides, neatly cut through the middle of the tank, providing panoramic views of the Norfolk countryside, and a rooflight giving views of the sky. The interior retains the original exposed metal panels from the plant room, with the original ballcocks and valves being retained as decorative features. The exterior is wrapped in insulated render, painted grey, which transforms the original tank room into a ‘look out’ with a 1930s architectural language.

The client is a photographer, who, in order to achieve the vision and bring it in within an affordable budget, became the main contractor. The care and attention that has been given to the details, with the photographer’s eye, is evident throughout, as was the approach to retain as much as possible of the original building structure, and to reuse any elements that were surgically removed during construction.

The Water Tower is an example of how an unloved redundant structure can be given a new sustainable life through intelligent design, carefully and diligently applied by a committed and driven client. The effort to preserve and retain as much of the original structure as possible and the rigour of the execution is exemplary. It shows how good retrofitting design can combine low embodied energy and architectural delight.

Read Before you Build! Top 10 Roof Types and Their Pros and Cons

Most of us take our roofing for granted until it gets damaged by strong winds or needs to be repaired or upgraded. But if you’re planning a major remodeling of your property, rebuilding part of it, or are thinking about building your own home, then roof repair or roof design deserves some serious thought. When it comes to roofing, you have more options than you might have thought. From flat roofs and hipped roofs to gambrel and butterfly, it’s not always easy to decide which roof would be best for the structure in question. To shed a bit of light on the subject, Homeworks Remodeling and Construction Experts, a home improvement company in Mishawaka will be going through the top 10 types of roofs and their pros and cons. 1. Open Gamble Roof Type Gable roofs are arguably the most popular style of roof as they can easily suit a variety of homes and buildings. In its most basic appearance, a gable roof is a combination of two roof planes that form the shape of an inverted V. Rain resistant, excellent drainage and relatively cheap. Somehow this type of roof is vulnerable to wind and damage and doesn’t stand out aesthetically. 2. Hip Roof Type The standard hip (or hipped) roof consists of four sides of equal height which slope up to meet at a ridge. The geometry of a hip roof makes it much more stable when it comes to resisting the wind while the pitched sides protect the house from rain and snow. Just like a gable roof, there is plenty of ventilation and scope for extensions further down the line. It has a strong traditional look and wind-resistant. But the problem with kind of roof is it difficult to build and vulnerable to leakage. 3. Flat Roof Type Flat roofs have been generally dismissed as a bad idea by homeowners unless they were planning to build a shed. Although flat roofs are generally pitched to a slight is aesthetically unique, easy to build and has an opportunity for a patio space in your property. But this type of roof is difficult to maintain, this roof is not designed for rain and costly to keep up. 4. Gambrel Roof Type A gambrel roof (also known simply as a gambrel), is a type of two-sided roof that is characterized by vertical gable ends and two slopes on each side. The upper slope is of a shallower pitch than the lower slope which is steeper. It is similar to a Mansard roof but differs in that it is not hipped, but has vertical gable ends instead. Gambrel roof type is also aesthetically unique, has a good storage space and can maximize the headroom. The cons of this roof type are it is difficult to build and dominates much of the home. 5. Butterfly (V Type) Roof Type A butterfly is a V-shaped roof constructed of two tandem pieces that are angled up on the outside. The midsection is angled downward where the two pieces meet into a valley. The overall effect is of a butterfly’s wings. The butterfly roof is popular for modern, eco-friendly and tropical home designs. This rood type is aesthetically unique, eco-friendly and gives more natural light. 6. M-Shaped (multi-gable, ridged) roof type The M-shaped roof features two sloped sides that meet in the middle with corresponding slopes on each side. This pattern could be repeated multiple times especially in condominiums or a strip mall. The obvious downfall of this design would be snow and rain building up in the center where the two slopes meet but this is alleviated by a central gutter running from front to back, perpendicular to the front of the building. Even so, the pitch of M-framed roofs is generally steeper to assist in runoff and to ‘catch’ less rain and snow. 7. Hexagonal (tented) roof type Hexagon roofs can tie into a smaller hexagon shape at the top but either way, there should be some slope. In recreational buildings virtually any type of material can be used for the roof. One of the biggest problems with creating a six or eight-sided building such as a gazebo or shed is determining how to bring the roof together. Unless you go military-style and adorn the building with a flat-top, the roof needs to have equal sides as the walls which involves a lot of framing (high materials costs.) 8. Clerestory roof type Clerestory roofs are built with one thing in mind – natural light. What they essentially amount to is a gable roof that meets at different heights. The bottom slope joints up a few feet lower which creates a location for a vertical wall. This wall is outfitted with numerous windows that allow natural light and warmth into the adjacent room. Since the windows are up high they provide privacy but also are environmentally friendly with ‘free’ light and heat.
