In 1909, Schelling was awarded the contract for improving "Manzanita St," including grading and graveling, cement curb, and cement gutter, vitrified block gutter; at the same time he was also awarded the contract for a portion of Cerro Gordo St. so that may be this sighting. In the same year, he submitted a bed for constructing Section 3 of South Los Angeles Main Sewer (Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer, Volume 3, Engineers and Architects Association of Southern California, 1909)!

In 1916, Schelling "abandoned the contract before full performance thereof" for the construction of a street improvement in Vancouver (The Pacific Reporter, Volume 154, West Publishing Company, 1916). How scandalous!

In the same year, he was noted as being in Burbank, CA, where he was awarded the contract for improving Glendale avenue in Glendale, between First street and Verdugo road (Contractor, Volume 23, McGraw Publishing Company, 1916).

By the following year, E. Schelling was located at 4316 South Figueroa street in the South Figueroa Corridor neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA. Almost all the info I found was in 1917, so get ready for a lot from Southwest Builder and Contractor, Volume 50 (F. W. Dodge Company, 1917).

He submitted bids to the Los Angeles "board of public works for grading and oiling Burns avenue between Virgil and Vermont avenues" including "grading to finished surface," ...cultivating, tamping, and oiling, ... Class A cement curb, ... cement walk, ... (and) concrete gutter;" "for constructing cement curbs and sidewalks on Echo Park avenue between Vestal avenue and Donaldson street;" "for the improvement of Effie street between Micheltorena street and Maltman avenue" including "rough grading, … finish grade and oil, … curb, …side walk, …concrete gutter, … (and) storm drain;" "for improving Myra street from santa Monica boulevard to Hoover street" including bitulithic paving including grading, rough grading to grade, finishing grading, oiling and rolling, cement curb, cement sidewalk, concrete gutter, storm drain, and remodeling sanitary sewer manhole; for "improving Bates avenue from Effie street to Sunset boulevard," including asphalt paving, rough grading, finishing grade and oil, curb, sidewalk, concrete gutter, brick gutter, and storm drain; "for grading and oiling Eagle street between Ezra street and Concord street" including rough grading, finish grade and oil, curb, sidewalk, and concrete gutter; "for rough grading and grading to finish grade at Lemoyne and Baxter streets;" "for grading and oiling and constructing cement curbs, sidewalks and gutters on Grafton street between Lucretia avenue and Lemoyne street;" "for grading an oiling and constructing cement curb, sidewalk and gutter and storm drain in Preston avenue between Husted street and Avalon street;" "for grading and oiling and constructing concrete pavement, cement curb, sidewalk and gutter in Twenty-fifth street between Nevin and Compton avenues." He pretty much seems to have done most of Echo Park!

He submitted a bid "for constructing a concrete retaining wall 1185 ft. long on south side of Brooklyn avenue east of Evergreen avenue."

In 1918, Schelling was still on Figueroa and was awarded the "contract for grading and oiling Preston Ave." and "for the improvement of Myra St. between Santa Monica Blvd. and Hoover St.," which had been submitted in the year prior (Engineering and Contracting: Buildings, General Contracting, Structures and Civil Engineering, Volume 49, Myron C. Clark Publishing Company, 1918).

In October of 1920, Schelling had a $20k "paving and sidewalk contract in a new sub-division in the north part of Los Angeles near Eagle Rock." In November of 1920, Schelling was listed as being located in Venice and being "low bidder of improvements on the South Mountain Road near Santa Paula, Ventura County." Plus, Russel and Whitney noted that "Mr. Schelling has been very busy of late and is very anxious to start his new 30-B Bucyrus shovel which was recently shipped to him" (Russell, I.T. and C. W. Whitney. "Notes from the Pacific Coast," Excavating Contractor, Volumes 13-14, A.B. Morse Company, 1916). [Obviously Google Books is wrong here because the edition is from 1920, so the volume cannot be from 1916.]

The only E. Schelling I found in the Los Angeles area around this time who seems to have something to do with the contractor business is Eugene Schelling. According to the 1940 Census, Eugene was born in 1882 in Switzerland and lived at 920 S Fremont in Los Angeles, California. That is not currently an address. I am guessing it was taken out by the 110 freeway. He died in 1951 and is buried at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery in L.A. (Find a Grave). However, knowing all this, I was able to confirm that Eugene is our E. Schelling, as per the 1917 Los Angeles City Directory, Eugene Schilling or Schelling or Shilling was located at 4316 S. Figueroa and was a contractor (Los Angeles Directory Co., accessed via the Los Angeles Public Library's Historic City and Business & Phone Directories Collection).

This led me to find a bigger job that Eugene did with an Oscar Schelling. ("Road Construction with a Diesel Oil Dragline: California Contractor Handles a Fill Along the Pacific Coast with Remarkably Low Fuel Cost." Contractors and Engineers Monthly, Volume 6, pg. 73, Buttenheim-Dix Publishing Corporation, 1923). For a contract that H.H. Peterson had, Eugene and Oscar did the earth-moving work.

In the 1940 Census, Oscar Schelling, also born in Switzerland around 1877, lived at 427 Orange Grove in Glendale, CA with the Groshong family. He was a graduate of the "scientific course" at Los Angeles High School (Annual Report, Board of Education of the City of Los Angeles, 1897). In 1910, Oscar had a patent for a grapple (?) with A. A. Phillips ("Gas-Appliance Patents," The Natural Gas Journal, Volume 4, Periodicals Publishing Company, 1910). I don't yet know his relationship to Eugene but perhaps they were brothers?

Oscar was also in the construction business. He had a contract for a highway in Seal Beach, California, in which he used a 30-B Bucyrus dragline excavator driving with a Diesel oil engine as pictured here (pg. 122, April 1923, "Pacific Coast News," Excavating Engineer, Volumes 16-17, A.B. Morse Company, 1922). The day shift included Harvey Kramer as engineer and Arthur Schelling (also of unknown relation) as oiler; the night shift had Frank Mayes as engineer and Sam Viluda as oiler (Birkhead P.H., "Pacific Coast News," Excavating Engineer, Volumes 16-17, A.B. Morse Company, 1922).

As he gained experience in these corporate companies, Smith learned the basics of his career. “When you’re out of school you don't have a lot of experience in a professional environment, so you’re really learning the trade and you’re part of a team,” he explained. “As an architectural intern you’re mostly doing drawings, then you end up spending time on the site managing the building process, reviewing work with the owner, and more. When Smith first began his business, he volunteered for the town of Lexington, Massachusetts on many different committees, getting involved with town activities and efforts. That's because that was the day the “shot heard around the world” was fired, or even more commonly known as the first day of the American Revolution. “It was a wonderful project to be a part of, it was a structure that was built before the revolution, 1735, was visited by George Washington, and plays an important role in town.” Tourists from all around come and visit Colin Smith Architecture’s renovated wing year after year. “We were happy to be a part of that.”

While Lexington has immense historical significance, it is home to one of the most coveted school systems in the United States, meaning that the abundance of youth is vast. Can We Discuss Feminism? (pt. 3)

 Back at it again with everyone’s favorite topic: Gender equality and the political mechanics that go into putting out positive media representations of it. Ok, no, but I am going to be talking about like, actually political topics in how feminism is divided and characterized with feminist history, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t read it! Just might be a bit of a history lesson too.

I want to start by addressing SSO’s very first statement on this matter, because I think it’s important. When SSO launched, they said they weren’t going to add male playable characters because they wanted to make a space for women. And I talked about this in my genderlocking piece, but that still strikes a cord with me and I think we need to have that discussion. It shouldn’t be the final discussion, but it should be a discussion.

Media predominantly is genderlocked to males. Typically when a game is genderlocked to women, it’s either for very young kids kids OR it’s lewded for the (largely) male audience. And so there is something to be said about SSO being a game that is unapologetically in the feminine aesthetic focused on being a game for all ages that is about women. And I think that the conversation needs to be had that it is almost always these games like SSO where we see outcry about genderlocking and the expectation to uphold gender equality, but not so for games targeted at the male audience, or at least not nearly as loudly. And yes, the feminist movement has been the leading proponent of gender equality for all genders, but the expectation for only products aimed largely at a female audience to be held to a fully gender equal standard is in it of itself a double standard that we need to address. And while I feel for trans-men and non-binary folx being misgendered in SSO, I do think we need to acknowledge that better and hold the whole industry to a better standard on the matter, not just games like SSO.

That said, ending the discussion there is second-wave feminism. We are in intersectional feminism and the end point of intersectional feminism IS that all genders need to be equally represented. And so where that discussion does need to be had, and I think SSO should push it, it can’t end there. SSO needs to move forward with including more gender options when they have their character remodel and it can’t include genderlocking, because all companies need to do this if they don’t have fixed characters you’re playing as. Gender identity is important, and even if they can’t do neo-pronouns yet because of translation issues, having at least she/he/they as options should be the baseline moving forward and we should make sure all companies are held to that standard.

That said, I want to be fair and present solutions that have reasonable production turnarounds for the near future. The player remodel is years in the works, longer for the more gender options you have. So what can SSO do now?

First of all, pronoun tags. Even if the model doesn’t get updated yet, adding customizable pronoun tags that you can change anytime you want for the PC and set for horses is an important start that relies on technology already in the game.

While they’re at it putting in the coding for quests and generally doing another pass on quests since recent retcons have cut some things and left a few quests feeling a little jarring, start seeding that being a Soul Rider is a position you can earn and it’s not limited to the four Soul Riders we know now. Have the narrative actively challenge the traditions of the Keepers into being more inclusive as a narrative that needs to happen on gender equality with kids and teens.

One big step in this direction would be to make Justin a Soul Rider when he goes to South Hoof and connects with the Singing Yew. Expand the understanding of magic and introduce these questions early enough on that we start questioning what it means to be a Soul Rider as the Keepers insist on the traditional Soul Rider unit and where magic comes from and then follow up by traveling with Justin as he comes to terms with his new powers and his relationship with his mother and his recent choices to be someone who does good and THAT’s what a Soul Rider is following the Catherine journals. Use this to support Concorde being a mare and that not just being a bad plot hole and talking about this being about the soul and dedication and not just destiny and genderlocks.

I’ve already talked about this, but it is so important to move away from the current Soul Riders and introduce new ones. I love the main four, but as long as they are so central to the plot, the Soul Riders remain this reminder of a traditional centralized female led group. So while they should remain active agents in the story, we need to move towards recruiting more characters of more gender identities and make them active agents central to the story.

Not to mention, breaking down the Soul Rider being a limited four person unit makes way more sense for an MMO narrative and it opens it up to telling stories with your friends and other players in game without bending over backwards with canon. So like, by making these changes not only to you become more inclusive, but you also set up the groundwork for better game design in a multiplayer aspect.

I think the last easy thing SSO could do is add a choice of head accessory the player gets for free at the start of the game. None of these items give stats anyway, so it’s just a choice of a free option until the player models are redone. This way instead of just the helmet, players could choose between a pair of glasses, a head scarf, a hearing aid, a beard, and a mustache. All of these options should be free to pick up in Moorland so you can double/if you missed out, you can get them. But it’s a free way to add basic customization for people of multiple different walks with features mostly already in the game. Combined with pronouns, it’s a solution SSO could implement now to the game without a lot of coding.

And that’s everything for now. This topic is always going to be dynamic but it’s important to be had. Just be practical with the implication. Some of these are easier to add than others. An accessory shop could probably be added in a month using assets already in the game, but even updating pronouns would take months on the low end. Not to mention going back through the whole story to seed other gender changes. Push for change, always, but try to give steps that are achievable in the meantime.
