Also yeah er…I’ve never fully been able to get on the shidou hype train oops, Isagi I think is a really cool protagonist because he’s not really my fav in any sense but the story still manages to make me root for him!! I think he’s written really well in that sense because I’ve never been that moved by an mc before LOL, still don’t like him enough like that though HAHA sorry Isagi

yes that’s what i was thinking!! like maybe the otoya parents had their oldest child when they were younger and then eita + his younger sister are closer in age so their older sister isn’t as involved in their lives and isn’t close enough w eita to tell him to stop being a cheater. JDDJOS him talking to his sisters like “men are trash ladies stay away from them and don’t date until marriage 😌” buddy look in the mirror you ARE the trash…honestly that’s why i think childhood friends to lovers is the best trope for him!! i could write a whole oneshot on it but i shall refrain

i actually love reonagi 1000x more when they’re hanging with other characters instead of one another. idk why but i find them rlly boring together?? zantetsu + reo, nagi + barou, kunigiri + reo, nagi + isagi are all dynamics i find much more entertaining and also imo show their personalities a bit more.

HELP rin is stuck in soccer jail during his angstiest years no wonder that boy is constantly 0.5 seconds way from snapping and talks abt killing everyone whenever he’s on the field 😭 what’s funny is barou is older than karasu but he does NOTTT act like it…i bet tabieitaken gossip abt how immature half of the bllk boys are (not that resident jackasses karasu and otoya are pinnacles of class but they at least act their age)

oh i just excluded hiori and chigiri because they’re the same age as rin so the specific dynamic i was talking abt wouldn’t really work w them!! rin’s like one of the youngest players though so like p much anyone else would qualify as being older HAHA. i do think the hiori dynamic you mentioned would also be interesting!! i think that rin and hiori would be on more equal footing in that though…in my mind it would be more of a traditional love triangle than rin being a second lead who has a 0% chance at ever being acknowledge by the mc. still super interesting and def would be fun though!!

i think that the worst ones for rin (if we go the older boy route) would be nagi or karasu (not being biased). rin basically has no interest in anything but soccer (a lot like sae) and kinda horror games and whatnot?? for the most part it’s just soccer on his mind though. i think if the reader was w karasu (or even yukimiya to a lesser extent) who is very well rounded and generally mature, it would probably throw rin’s lack of maturity + other interests into relief, ESPECIALLY if the mc isn’t into soccer, which would def fuck w rin sooo bad. like everything he’s ever wanted in life has been obtained via his talents at soccer — he even thinks he can fix his relationship w sae just by getting better at the sport — but here’s someone who thinks he’s childish and doesn’t even care how talented he is. karasu straight up calls rin childish during the third selection for fighting w shidou which i think would make him crash out in an au like this one. it’s similar with nagi, who’s a prodigy that’s never really had to work for anything in his life — rin is super dedicated, and he balances his talent with hard work, so i think that if nagi managed to win over someone who HE wanted, seemingly without any effort, it would make him feel horrible and reinforce that feeling that no matter how hard he tries, he’ll never be on the level of the prodigies of the world (nagi/sae). idk if you can tell but messing w rin is a pastime for me i love thinking of ways to torture him

i also have never really seen the shidou appeal…like more power to everyone who likes him but he simply is not the one for me. isagi is meh like i don’t mind him as a character at all but i don’t know if i could ever write him as a main love interest!! he’s missing a certain smth in my mind. but he would be a perfect character to put in a side couple i think — kind of like a less problematic version of bff x otoya in fwtkac HAHA

for the most part there’s a lot of diff breeds that can do many different jobs!! especially if you’re not competing nationally most horses will do okay doing whatever, plus there’s talented/non-talented horses in each breed. normally people will pick a horse based on its aptitude for their chosen sport rather than just the breed!! but if i had to assign horse breeds (horsesonas???) to tabieitaken + hiori, i would say yuki would be a friesian, otoya would be an arabian, karasu would be a trakehner, and hiori would be a connemara

i haven’t listened to the official character songs no!! i feel like i only listen to soundtracks if they play during the show and are particularly majestic (violet evergarden soundtrack will always be famous to me hehe). i’ll have to listen at some point though!! karasu and otoya are truly THEEE best friends of bllk so they’re def going to have themes that riff off of that (hoping they get smth cool like chigiri’s guitar but more menacing considering they’re the ninja and the assassin)

icl the next installment is sooo long you don’t even know but it’s 90% crack fic NDKSJSSN like the most unserious stuff i’ve written in ages. now that karasu and reader are dating their relationship is more of an underlying support to the shenanigans the crew gets up to instead of the main focus so it��s a lot sillier and less romantic than the previous two parts. hopefully you still like it!! but either way at least you’ll have a good amt to read once i finally finish and post it

I CAN’T WAIT FOR SEASON TWO EITHER RAHHH tabieitaken…nagi and barou’s goals in the u-20 match…rin tweaking on the field…hoping beyond hope that the animation for the best moments at least is good because if they make the u-20 match goals look crusty i’ll cry. i think it’s funny how usually the anime has a much better art style than the manga but w bllk it’s the other way around!! ESPECIALLY episode nagi but honestly the art for the main manga now that it’s been developed is amazing

Hello! I love your metas, they're always so interesting to read and you point out great things! I was wondering if you (or anyone) has ever done like a meta or comparison post on the hugs in 911? Like other couples hugs and general firefam hugs, vs eddieana hugs vs bucktaylor hugs and ultimately vs buddie hugs? I just think it would be a neat comparison that I'd love to see but haven't come across yet!

Hi lovely Nonnie! Thank you so much for the kind words, I'm so happy people like these meta posts! NGL, I always feel like everything I write is probably obvious, so my posts are redundant, which is why it's so incredible to hear that they do offer people new insights that they value. Thank you!

And that is such a great question! TBH, I don't think I've seen anyone posting meta about hugs, but then I have difficulty reading long stuff ever since my vertigo started, meaning I could have easily missed it... (also, my apologies for zero gifs/screenshots for this reply, I’m away from home and queuing my answers in the hope that this is better than me not answering for a while. I’m really hopeful I’m not wrong!)

It's funny that you asked about comparing 118/couples hugs to those of Eddie and Ana, since E/A haven't really had any hugs, have they? They had one moment of cuddling on the couch, where Chris came in, a subtle reminder of why Eddie was with Ana at all, and then we had Ana trying to find a way in while Eddie was breaking up with her and putting his arms around himself, a gesture which serves both as a wall, but also to self-sooth. The fact that she tries to be a part of that and fails points to how she's not a part of what can comfort Eddie, she never was. So neither instance is a proper hug and that in itself was already indicator of what's wrong with the two of them.

Taylor and Buck have had one hug so far. One, and even that one is more focused on his expression rather than on both of them, and we see that it's not a content or comforted one. It's in a slightly different way, but this hug says about Taylor something similar to what the last touch between Eddie and Ana said about her: she's not the person who can comfort Buck and make things better even when the situation isn't good.

Compare that with every hug we've ever had with the firefam as a group, with the established couples of the show, or even with Buddie themselves. This show is all about found family and those hugs are a way for 911 to express where its heart is: it's in the connection between these people and how those bonds can help carry them even through the worst that life can throw at us. Those hugs aren't just moments when we can breathe between the moments of pain and difficult calls on the show, they're what gives us the reason and the strength to go on facing all those moments. They offer real comfort and through that, they keep these characters moving forward even at the face of the greatest challenges...

But I really wanna highlight the Buddie hugs, especially the ones we see in 218 and 306. The latter happens right after Buck and Eddie have had their biggest crisis as friends, when they both felt alone and betrayed. And for a while there, because the whole lawsuit thing lasted a couple of weeks. Yet, the second that they can, these two pull together again, and they hug, and they freaking melt into the hug. Just look at their expressions and the way they fucking burrow into the hug. Buck is so big and he leans his whole huge frame into Eddie, he's clearly finding real comfort there. Even though not everything is fully resolved, as we later learn, the hug itself, this moment when they can bask in their bond, still offers them comfort that they sorely need, and if later they can figure things out, it's in part because that hug is a testament to the fact that they still have their connection, that despite being tested, it's as strong as ever.

And then we have the hug in 218 as well, the one where Eddie has just lost his wife and had to watch his best friend trapped under a truck, and Buck was that guy, and his leg is not yet recovered, he still doesn't know if he'll be able to get back to being a firefighter (when that is his life, as he has stated to Maddie), but their hug? A perfect moment of joy despite all that. One that offers real and profound comfort. And if you look at the way that each character on this show finds the most meaningful comfort with their partner, Buddie's hugs are another thing that seals the fact that they ARE each other's life partners, the ones that give the other one the most comfort and the strength to go on. GOD, THEY NEED TO BE MARRIED LIKE YESTERDAY ALREADY.

tala shyly accepted the arms of mattsun while makki was squealing quietly when darna was holding his finger tightly as she slept

his eyes held the stars as the 11-month-old raised her fist then lowered it back down, sleep still heavy on her

once everyone was situated in a restaurant and ordered, small talks were shared around the table of the past

yahaba’s comment made the walking group laugh at the memory of seeing the video you sent in the seijoh group chat

‘i wanted to be creative with my second child since my firstborn was revealed by this loudmouth’

oikawa winced at the indirect diss at him

‘y/n-chan! i was really excited to find out i was going to be an uncle!’

‘youre already an uncle, bakakawa!’

hajime has toned down the insults to keep it pg for the children

‘but-!’

they started to argue, the oldest daughter looking disinterested as she sees this happening or hearing it whenever her dad and uncle video chat

‘it took me forever to find a ‘prego’ pasta sauce in the grocery store like i dont know why. was there a shortage?’

you complained, remembering the frustration

your fellow first years snickered at you and kindaichi prodded fun at you

‘is that why you just outright told him you were pregnant the day you found out?’

you rolled your eyes and watched makki and mattsun and tala watch the youngest as she wiggled her fists in the air and was awake enough to babble ‘makki’ over and over again

that was her first word and although she is now able to say a few words, she still repeats her first word over and over again

‘we had a fight and it just came out so of course i didnt have time to prepare!’

you defended and hajime finished his antics with oikawa just as you said that

‘what-what was your words again? ‘i really want to push you off the roof right now but i want my baby to meet their bastard father first?’‘

you gasped at that regretful statement and punched him in the arm

‘hajime! stop!’

you whined and covered your face with the sleeves of your his hoodie

‘hehe, y/n, you should do that again’

kyotani teased and you glared at him

‘shut up kyotani’

eyebrows were raised

‘eh? are you more hormonal?’

‘do you realize you already have 3 daughters?’

‘iwaizumi-san really wants to have a volleyball team family’

‘at least wait a year and a half, you animals’

hajime growled and leaned over to intimidate but you snarled and jumped on your feet, being held back by the arms by kindaichi and hajime to stop yourself from leaping across the table to kill yahaba

‘keep talking like shite and i’ll make sure none of you become the godfather of this baby’

one, did you just curse

and two, this baby?!

‘im big sister again?!’

reyna ruined the surprised silence and then chaos ensued

‘WHAT!’

‘THIS BABY?!’

you just realized what you said and smirked at the chaos you created and sat back down, leaning on the back of the chair and smugly taking a sip of your water

‘oh the power i hold in my hands’

you teased and oikawa pointed at you

‘when! how long!’

you looked at hajime who was so shocked that his eyes glazed over and a passerby wouldve thought he was dead

‘apparently 3 months’

oikawa started counting and his eyes widened at that thought

‘you-! you stayed in argentina! in my house! my house-!’

‘yep. both of them created under your house’

Fantasy book review [Baru Cormorant 1-3] [The Masquerade Series] - F/F poc MC, M/M & NB rep

A rollercoaster of potentially deadly sapphic yearning

An epic fantasy, anti-imperialist, political, lesbian poc protagonist, gritty, thoughtful and thought-provoking unfinished 4 book series (book 3 was published 2020) by Seth Dickinson.

CW for this series: references to colonialism; racism; cruelty/death to queer ppl incl. trans, non-binary & poly people; torture; death; animal death; sexual assault (never on the page and not against MC); swearing; abortion; non-consensual medical procedures; body horror; child abuse; child death; drug use; alcoholism; cancer; deadly pandemic. Violence imo is never gratuitous nor excessively gory; racism and other slurs are challenged at some point by the text. YMMV. Sorry if I’ve missed something.

I first added this book to my TBR because people said it was about a public servant lesbian accountant.

This is the truth. You will know because it hurts.

The Traitor Baru Cormorant

That’s the promise that The Traitor Baru Cormorant, Book 1 in this unfinished quartet, gives you on its first page. It’s tempting to assume the 'it hurts' part is just marketing hype trying to drive up the tension of the final act, but I can assure you it’s not.

tl;dr

I 100% recommend these books to fantasy readers who are ok with the content warnings.

This series goes from buying you dinner where you exchange sexually charged barbs but then escalates to surgically removing and filleting your heart.

The end of the third book puts you back together and cracks terrible and wonderful jokes whilst it sutures up the numerous incision points it’s made in your body.

Get to the third book. Get to the aftercare. That’s all I can say for those of you still hurting from Traitor.

And if you haven't read Traitor yet, try to avoid spoilers until the very last page, if you can.

Tropes and queer rep:

Most main characters are poc and queer

The main character is a total lesbian and she’s an adorable trainwreck of moral ambiguity

Soooo many women who are aggressively competent, including the MC

So many potential love interests, and almost every one has an enemies to lovers vibe. Any one of them could kill her. Any one of them could kiss her! It’s a rollercoaster of potentially deadly sapphic yearning. My fave, ngl.

Problematic power imbalances in almost every relationship, platonic and otherwise

Economics/fiscal policy implementation as the protagonist’s special power

A book 1 sword duel which was just perfection

A major pov character in Books 2 and 3 is a non-binary leader/diplomat using they/them pronouns

Several important side characters are mlm, though they don’t get as much screen time

Several cultures, including Baru’s birth culture practise some kind of poly and accept non-binary people

Several cultures define gender based on behaviour

A complex world that feels steeped in history and research.

The political stuff reminded me of Octavia E. Butler’s works and the horribly repressed, self-loathing genuis useless lesbian reminded me a little of Harrowhark Nonagesimus.

Overview

The Masquerade quartet follows Baru Cormorant, a girl with two fathers and one mother, whose home island gets quietly colonised by the Evil Empire. As a young child she joins the new school on her island built by the Empire, to learn where its power comes from so that she can successfully assimilate into its command structure and take it down from within.

This is a series about power, agency, systemic oppression, and intersections with race, privilege, sexuality and gender. But it’s also an intriguing, compelling and ultimately compassionate read about a young marginalised woman’s rise to power.

While these are serious topics, none of them were handled in a didactic way imo–these themes arise naturally from the narrative frame, and I never felt preached to or that the fourth wall was being broken to make a point. We also never have to suffer an undiluted pov from an Empire native, so every single imperialist statement is filtered through an outsider’s lens and challenged by the text.

Baru

When this is finished, I will remake the world so that no woman will ever have to do this again.

The Traitor Baru Cormorant

Some people find it hard to love Baru. I am not one of those people.

It’s hard not to love someone so fierce in their conviction. Yes, she does terrible things. Almost everyone in this series does terrible things? But I identify with her so hard. Her charming but then at times absolutely groan-inducing flirting game. Her violently suppressed sapphic yearning. Her earnest love of trade, numbers, and economic patterns (oh Himu, please let us have more numerate lesbians). Even her horrific self-destructive behaviour and self-flagellation are so, so relatable.

I really have to admire a girl who would do almost anything to get what she wants.

The Love Interest

The Traitor Baru Cormorant

She’s Baru’s moral compass, a delightful and remorseless rake, a duchess whose sense of nobility and loyalty is unimpeachable. Every single one of her interactions with Baru sizzles with sexual tension and unsatisfied yearning.

Tain Hu is a contender for one of the best sword lesbians ever.

She makes me long for someone to write a regency AU fic: Auditing the Duchess. Someone, please.

The Evil Empire

Part of the empire is like that kid from psych 101 who’s just learnt about evolutionary psychology and now takes it upon himself to mansplain that everyone would be oh so much happier if they just went along with their biologically determined gender roles, but with a side serving of the motivations behind phrenology and other racist bullshit. It offers trade, healthcare, peace, security with one hand and decimates local economies and culture with the other, occasionally dipping into genocide.

For sodomites, hot iron; for tribadists, the knife.

The Traitor Baru Cormorant

I’ve read some readers saying that the Empire is so outrageously evil, it’s unbelievable anyone would follow them.

But it’s really not? If you’ve ever read a primary source from a colonial government, they absolutely are that fucking awful (and worse) in using pseudo-science to very earnestly argue for racial inequality, and for being paternalistic and cruel towards the populations they invaded. Eugenics, ethnic cleansing, every single thing bad and good committed by this Empire has its basis in reality both past and present.

I also appreciate that the Empire isn’t quite a Euroclone, that their impossible beauty standards are not exactly the same as our world’s white beauty standards.

This was the first impression Baru had of the Falcrest people: stubborn jaws, flat noses, deep folded eyes, their skin a paler shade of brown or copper or oat.

The Traitor Baru Cormorant

Choices

This is a series about agency, who gets to have agency, who sets the context in which a choice can be made. To what degree should we assign individuals responsibility for their actions, given the state of the world they were born in? Can the end ever justify the means?

Baru makes many decisive choices, and the fun thing about this narrative is that Baru is surrounded by so many shadow selves (sooo many, the girl is haunted) that we don’t have to guess what would have happened if she’d made x or y choice–because the other characters have done it for her, and the trajectory of their lives reveal the outcomes of those choices she didn’t make.

There’s one character in particular whose motivations make little sense unless she’s using Baru as her own shadow self, and through steering Baru onto the right path, finding her own kind of redemption.

The way this story is framed, the only way for Baru to achieve her goal and live to see it is to walk the path she’s on.

Privilege, culture

Everything ends. Everything will end and you cannot fear that. But you must decide what the endings will mean.

The Tyrant Baru Cormorant

This series pressed so many buttons for me I try to forget I have (which I realise is a privilege in and of itself).

It made me so acutely aware of my many various privileges, both broad (gay marriage is legal where I live) and intimate (being straight-passing). Not to mention being so damn grateful for electricity and anti-biotics.

The fact that every micro-aggression is called out somehow forces you to reflect on everything that’s happened and continues to happen and how that’s not okay. And sometimes it’s a lot, but you always feel like the text is on your side.

And just the feels of, from my pov as part of the Chinese diaspora, Baru’s sense that you can’t go home–home has moved on without you–are you (birthrace) enough to fit in with the people who’ve raised you? Is just. It cuts.

Maybe the story won’t have the same fishhooks for you, but I’m still bleeding.

Writing

Honestly I sometimes struggle with long sweeping epics, but I didn’t find it particularly difficult to keep up with the various factions in this series. Also, for such increasingly long books with so many non-standard terms (I honestly love ‘isoamory’ for samesex), the prose was freakishly clean, it was almost uncanny. Whoever edited this is a saint. And sometimes the phrasing was so damn beautiful.

The future

Book 3 concluded on a satisfying note, although of course there are a lot of loose ends, it’s not the cliffhanger of Book 2 so I feel like the wait for the final book isn’t going to be as agonising as, say the wait for Alecto.

Conclusion

I’m obsessed with Baru and I wish there were more sapphic characters who are just as brutally calculating.

I might as well say it again–if you’re still nursing a wound from Traitor, there is hope! Monster has a massive tonal shift from repressed gay to disaster gay, but she digs herself out of the mire of self-loathing by Tyrant.

Most likely our dynamic would be:

the scary and intimidating person but is actually a softie × the scary and intimidating person but is actually chaotic and a softie.

Ok so here's why:

Kakucho always intimidates people just by looking at them or his aura?

Like if kakucho is shopping at the grocery store buying food and this mf right here is just doing his thing ya know picking which drink and snacks is more healthy and all that stuff because I tend to eat just whatever food is given to me (It's a big no no if it's a fish food but chips are ok just no actual fish.)

BUT THEN PEOPLE WOULD BE AVOIDING HIM and this man is used to it and you can't tell me he Don't take advantage of that.

So imagine if me and kakucho would go out on public. My aura would be awkward and intimidating while kakucho is just there standing with his normal aura AND LET ME TELL YOU I LIKE WEARING MASKS BECAUSE IT COVERE HALF OF MY FACE

And so kakucho would be wearing a mask (ugh imagine him wearing a e-boy formal looking clothes 😫 he would look so good AND IMAGINE HIM WEARING HIS GLASSES⁉️ OMFG)

So like whenever me and kakucho would go out people would be pretty much stare at us and avoid us and the both of us love that because no one would literally interrupt us while having a great time reading or walking our cat (yes for some reason I wall cats on the park I don't know why. Walking them cats like how I walk dogs.)

It's pretty much chaotic and since I pretty much know how to cook and so does kakucho, but he prefers if he cooks since I like putting too much seasoning and kakucho doesn't like that very much but sometimes we would cook together for the both of us.

And cleaning? Yeah kakucho is the one doing that. I don't have any motivation to do that but I'll sometimes help him with sweeping the floor or wiping the dusts. Our house or apartment is organized and clean since I like seeing things organized and kakucho likes seeing things clean and he also doesn't want me getting sick so....

But oh boy he makes sure to keep all the fragile things that could be broken somewhere I couldn't reach nor touch because honestly I'm a clutz and I tend to break things accidentally

Also kakucho reminds me of what I should do and where I put my things, he literally have places in the apartment/house where I can put my things example: my notebooks, pens, shoes, hair brushes, etc. because I lost things easily and forgets where I put it, it will take a long time for me to remember where I put it so kakucho decided to make places and cabinets where I can put my things.

hmmm when did i become a louie??? i really don’t remember, it was def when 1d was active and i became a louis as soon as i became a larrie. so i’d say around 2013 or the end of 2012

why did you become a louie?

there’s just something about him that pulled me you know. like idk what but i felt like he’s just marvelous and warm and kind. maybe it’s his personality and ngl his appearance played a part too. he’s damn ethereal, he’s out of this world man. the way he carries himself and how protective he is to harry, these two drew me. i look up to him as a big brother but also i’d like that his type of personality to be found in my partner.

Black Sails s3

This one took me longer because RL got in the way LOL. I’ve loved it as much as the other two (even if I am IN PAIN over you-know-who’s death DD:). I don’t know when I’ll have the time to finish the last season, but I wanted to post about this one before starting it; otherwise it’d accumulate with the 10+ and counting metas I want to write about this show once I have the full picture LMAO.

Max

As always, I have to start with her because she’s THE FUCKING BEST. This woman is currently competing for the number one spot among fictional characters in my heart LOL (I mean. I have loved Caroline Forbes --who I actually think Max has a lot in common with lmao. Everything I love is the same, as I always say-- for too many years for her to ever be truly dethroned; unless something goes really wrong with Legacies I guess. However, it’s still remarkable that a character could make me doubt).

I’ve absolutely adored her plot this season; watching her growing sphere of influence, the way she affects and upends others’ lives. That’s very much being present since season one, especially with her and Silver in tandem (I have a lot of Thoughts(TM) about those too as a driving/disruptive force in the show --they’ll go to one of those metas--; I’m put off by the fact that I didn’t get to enjoy them conspiring together this season lol. Though her reaction to the fake Long John Silver letter was kind of hilarious xDD. Still. I kind of wish we’d seen the scene where Silver tells her he renounces to his part of the price. It could’ve been very interesting --I guess he could’ve told Jack but that wouldn’t’ve been as good, so this is my headcanon).

The most obvious storyline where this manifest is in her relationship with Anne and Jack. I love everything about it, but well. I have to admit, the ~betrayal/different sides element appeals to me xD. I like that Max prioritices herself and her safety. That she sees the writing on the wall with the English invasion or with Vane’s execution and acts accordingly, the way she calculates her decisions and forms alliances without letting past grievances get in the way --with Eleanor, Rogers, Mrs. Mapleton...--, the choices she makes because she doesn’t want to be “on the outside looking in” ever again and how they always end reverting in her benefit, ultimately (I’m getting ahead because I am spoiled of quite a few things about s4, but I LOVE that eventually she mends her relationship with Anne and Jack. Because it fits into this: how even the possible mistakes and emotional compromises she makes are within a very specific frame that works out for her in the end).

Her relationship with Anne gets even better this season. I think my favourite scene is where Max tells Anne that she nows Anne “cannot fathom leaving me”. Can I get this woman’s confidence LMFAO. But seriously. I luff them. I love how Max convinces Jack of going along her plan to replace the gold with good easier to transport (and how THAT ends up being Flint’s treasure asdñlfkasfj. MY GIRL DIRECTLY CAUSED THE EVENTS IN TREASURE ISLAND OKAY) by appealing to their mutual love for Anne. That she trusts Anne with the story about her father. That she knows just as well as Jack that Anne wouldn’t give up the treasure so easily and she’ll try to save him (and that Anne won’t stomach the thought of Jack being tortured because she couldn’t bear MAX’S torture. My heart).

Another highlight of the season for me was her relationship with Eleanor, which keeps being a huge surprise no matter what xDD (even if, again, never in a shippy way. I’m very glad the season doesn’t go there). I love the reversal of expectation in a general fandom landscape: how ultimately, Eleanor doesn’t have an emotional hold over Max (and that she lost it as early as 1x02, IMO. I’m not saying “Max doesn’t feel anything about Eleanor”, but the truth of the matter is, narratively Eleanor serves Max, not the other way around. And I’m happy and relieved about it, ngl), and that the same isn’t true the other way around. I thought two very telling scenes where a.) Max hosting parody trials of Eleanor that paint her under a completely undignified light, but clearly deriving no pleasure from it: it simply was yet another thing she does for practically, level-headed political reasons; and b.) that Eleanor orders Rogers’ men not to hurt Anne in the exchange because Max’s love for Anne.

Continuing down with Max’s relationships, I’ve grown to really like hers with Idelle. I think Max find Idelle fun, likeable, uncomplicated (the scene where Featherstone tells Idelle he hopes his pardon doesn’t diminish her attraction to her was hilarious and clearly the moment Max was enjoying herself the most in the whole season lmfao. BTW, I kinda liked Idelle/Featherstone since the moment he told Jack he wasn’t concerned because “he was in love with a good woman” and Jack was like “Idelle??”. Yes, it’s fun because client-falling-for-sex-worker is a pitiful cliché, but here’s the thing: he’s right xD. He didn’t say “I’m in love with a woman who loves me”. He said he was in love with someone GOOD and Idelle IS a good woman, dammit xDD).

Max doesn’t concern herself much with the idea of Idelle going behind her back because Idelle loves her, respects her, and is a loyal friend (and yet clearly sees Max exactly as she is and doesn’t have any delusions about it. Luckily for her Max is probably the type to feel angry but not vengeful about this lol, if only because it could reflect on her). And Max is right about that. But I love that Idelle still has it in her to take a different path by allying herself with the pirates. I’m curious about the reasoning being after Max makes Mrs. Mapleton madam again; it’s clear the girls aren’t happy about her and she didn’t seem like she took good care of them in s1, to put it mildly, so there’s some of that, but I like to think part of it was Idelle going, “seriously Max? I’m right here! I could be the Madam!” xDD.

Her dynamic with Mrs. Mapleton was really interesting too; I like how she too puts aside any old grudge and decides to put her bets with Max over Eleanor or Rogers, because she has confidence that Max and her methods (“I choose to let the players reveal themselves to me, least I make an enemy out of someone I might wish to call a friend one day”) will outlast them (btw, that line/her approach in general --as well as Silver’s “liked is a good as feared” MO--, kind of reminded me to Sansa Stark’s “If I am ever queen, I will make them love me.” line. Food for thought). Yet I think Mrs. Mapleton instructed Georgia to attempt to ~seduce Max to get information out of her, which is very much in line with her. I loled at Max’s reaction basically being “gurl, who do you think you’re talking to. I practically invented this. GTFO” xDD

Basically, her entire storyline this season was pure gold. I love how all of those dynamics come from her maneuvers to keep herself safe, in power, and with influence (because those go hand in hand). I love her pride and her confidence, the way she refuses the scraps Eleanor and Rogers intend to give her at first (and how she firmly says to Eleanor “people do not speak to me that way anymore”, how she establishes a new normal between them), and how she pays her way out of trouble/into power with the gold she stole from Flint & co xDD.

My favourite moment of hers is devided between “in another time, in another place, they would call me a queen”, and “I AM Nassau” (that made me decide that if I ever write fic where Max needs a last name for any reason, it’s going to be Nassau. It is law), and how meta they’ll turn out to be :DD. I also have Thoughts about the evolution of her styles (beyond the obvious “omg she’s soooooo beautifuuuuul” lmao) but I’ll leave that for another show-encompassing meta too :P

Madi

She catapulted herself to Forever Fave status pretty quickly (I may have too many of those in this show. W h a t e v e r xDD). I love how self-assured she is (“when I speak my men listen, and they do as I say”), and how she always thinks of the big picture (like when she fought her impulse to order her men to fight against the pirates after one of them beat one of hers). And I have a lot of Feels about how this is explicitly linked to her heritage, her mother and father, their ~legacies.

Speaking of: one of the few major spoilers I seem to have avoided was that Mr. Scott was Madi’s father LOL. I was DELIGHTED by that reveal, and how it makes you reconsider his story. His relationship with Eleanor could’ve been a frankly off-putting cliché, but this completely circumvents that; it’s true that he’d shown more independence from her than I would’ve expected in another show, by leaving her side to do his own thing and further contributing to her vulnerability. But giving him a real* family, one that he prioritises over Eleanor and HID FROM HER, using her position to their benefit... That’s on a whole other level.

*I know some people are going to object to this qualifier. Fandom gets like that about found families, adopted families, etc. And I get it, but this is NOT like those situations. Mr. Scott was Eleanor’s SLAVE, FFS. That is incompatible with being her family, her father figure, no matter what she thought. And I love that the show made it explicit, when Madi tried to talk about his “two daughters” and he said “NO. ONLY YOU” in his deathbed (I might or might not have cried, okay. It may be one of my favourite scenes in the whole series). Especially when there’s a very obvious trend of characters of color COINCIDENTALLY being written as prioritizing white characters over their biological families, at the cost of their health and even their lives (I am still not over Monty being forced to kill his own mother to protect Octavia in The 100. Fuck that shit, seriously). Black Sails deciding to do the oposite here is FUCKING REVOLUTIONARY and I love it to pieces.

Another thing I loved is that they picked an actress that looks more like Mr. Scott than like her mother or Max (darker skin etc.): aka how the few black female characters that usually get what Madi will from Silver --that ~eternal devotion, willing to go against anything and anyone for her etc.-- tend to look.

Unsurprisingly, I like Madi/Silver VERY MUCH lol. I like that he is immediately ~drawn to her, in a subtle way, and viceversa (like in the scene where he’s still in the cage watching how she has trouble breathing after seeing her wounded father, or when they hug after his death). All their talks about power, responsibility, succession etc. are really good. And her concern for him is as palpable as probably inconvenient for her xD. I love the scene where she holds her hand as his leg is treated, or her worry one Silver calls himself a “one legged creature”. Though my favourite might be when he smiles when she shows concern for his state after killing Dufresne, and she’s like “well duh, if you fall apart the alliance between my people and yours is screwed” xDD

And though there hasn’t been much development yet on that side, I’m already so onboard with Flint/Madi/Silver lmfao. I love that nod of ~acknowledgment between Flint and Madi with the Maroon Queen’s voiceover about how Madi will have as much authority as Flint in his own ship xD. Her concern about Silver’s relationship with him is kind of ironic knowing that they’ll eventually find themselves more aligned between them than with Silver, by virtue of their many commonalities LOL. And there’s already traces of that ot3 feels, like when Madi tells Silver that the mistake of those “other people close to Flint” that he’s so scared of following to the grave was trying to deal with Flint alone (Madi’s seduction technique: kindness, understanding, and offers of partnership. I dig it).

I want more scenes of and with her mother, too. And between her mother and Silver, since apparently the Maroon Queen trusts him among all the pirates NOT to betray them for money (Jack saying the irony wasn’t lost on him and Flitn was hilarious xD) and that has to be thanks to Madi’s opinion of him. I’m kind of bitter we never got a Mr. Scott & Silver scene, too, especially after Silver and Madi become romantically involved. I love that stuff.

Miranda

I could just upload a bunch of gifs of various crying/in pain/etc. states here because WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS THE PAINNN. I was ~feeling Flint’s grief the entire time, I swear (though... did it have to express itself by shaving his head... asking for a friend). The violence he kept inflicting in her name (her word will be the last word); how he convinced his crew, Silver included, to go into the storm rather than surrendering, for her (and narratively speaking Silver is right, he did conjure it xDD). How fucking tired he is of it all (“you can talk your way part it”, “I don’t know that I have any more lies left in me”).

As far as I’m concerned he could be hallucinating her the rest of the show (I’m going to miss seeing her so much... especially in light of the ending), as painful as I find those scenes. At this point “But when I lost you... I am ruined over you” is an instant tear-jerker, ugh. So is Flint wantint to let go and “be with her”, and ghost!Miranda saying she’d resent him for giving up. Though my favourite is when Miranda basically describes herself as his “maker”, about how she ~shaped him *clenches fist*. I love those kinds of ships.

BTW: I think the moment Rogers mentioned Thomas, Miranda’s ghost, Flint, and I, yelled “HOW DARE YOU SAY HIS NAME” on the inside xD

Flint & Silver

Sometimes fandom gets it right because the relationship between these two is... A Lot. A LOT. I anticipate a lot of suffering on my part in the near future xD

I loved the evolution in the first half of the season, from Flint telling Silver that “in my head, you’re not welcome”, or Silver resenting that Flint’s words convinced HIM (HE’S the convincer!! It’s not supposed to happen to ME!! xDD) and rambling about how Flint is “able to ~conjure the reality he desires”, to Silver finally confessing about his part on the Urca gold robbery (which I’m at least 60% sure Flint suspected already tbh. That was not one of Silver’s best lies lbr) in order to force Flint to “account for ME” --but ofc still grabbing the nearest weapon as he confeses, just in case xDD. I am also incredibly delighted by the fact that the fandom calls that episode “shark date” asdñflkasjdf (*Flint and Silver barely manage to kill one shark*; Flint, challenging: again? *Silver grins*. Shark hunting = foreplay now, apparently).

I want it known that I end up ENRAGED every time they talk about their ~partnership lmfao. It comes off very intimate and gives me too many feelings xD. “When you and I talk with one voice, we can convince them of anything”; “your words opened that door [Flint convincing the Maroon Queen to spare their lives and join their fight]”; “you didn’t tell me the journey into the dark feels good”; “he doesn’t know how to say no to the both of us at the same time”; “I’m afraid I will be the end of you”. JUST STOP YOU ASSHOLES XDD

One of my favourite moments is when Silver convinces Flint to live. To go on, to talk to the Maroon Queen without a safeguard (that knife would’ve been his doom) and get her on their side (which Flint does with a super passionate speech about fighting England’s empire. ILH). Another is when Silver tells him he enjoyed killing Dufresne WITH HIS PROSTHETIC LEG OMFG (I personally think killing Dufresne was very valid of him lmfao), or Flint says Silver enjoyed punishing Dobbs (which in Silver fashion, worked perfectly for him because it made Dobbs MORE susceptible to him). Though obviously everything pales when compared to the scene where CAPTAIN FLINT COMES OUT TO LONG JOHN SILVER OVER A BONFIRE LMFAO. I loved that scene; it was so gentle. And then Silver made it about him and their relationship xDD (this show is not subtle). Flint’s apparent lack of concern about Silver replacing him is stressing me out though. I dread the series finale xD

Outside of Flint/Silver, Silver’s journey remains awe-inspiring. I just... love him. I love that he gave up his share of the Urca gold because he had to hold onto the crew, but that he is terrified of their bow to take care of him. His concern for his image in front of them was heartbreaking and hit waaaaay too close to home, too. And I wonder how he’s going to react to Billy’s King Long John Silver stratagem xD

BTW, I lowkey shipped him with Muldoon LOL. They should’ve had ~tender sex~~ (on screen, I headcanon it did happen off-screen, whatever) at some point (if only so there was one measly mlm sex scene in the show amidst all the rest. It’s troubling, to say the least, that there’s not a single one when it has a queer male lead tbh. And I get why they didn’t go that route with Flint outside of Thomas and can even see why they didn’t do it with Flint/Thomas even if I judge the hell out of them for it, but given how they go out of their way for the other options... yeah, I side eye them).

Jack

I LOVE HIM SO MUCH AND I WISH HE HAD MORE SCREENTIME, OKAY. Every time he opens his mouth the show gets just a little bit better, if you ask me xD. “If you’re going to behave like children, I will be your daddy” WHO SAYS THAT JACK XDD.

I loved him even more when he decided to deny Rogers & co the cache, Spanish invasion or not, to not give up and assure “his legacy”. And OF COURSE he could write his intentions in a way that only Anne would understand (Max reaaaally understimated him there). Their relationship remains the sweetest (weird adjective, maybe, but it’s true) part of the show, btw. I love that how Jack describes how hurt Anne would feel after knowing she might’ve unwittingly betrayed him. Or when he knew Anne giving up to easily meant she had a plan and he cheerfully told Rogers Anne would find a way to save him xD (the scene where he absolutely drags Rogers about his privilege --“but did I make up a lot of ground to catch you!”-- is perfect. And their reunion kiss was so, so cute.

Other highlights were when he threw away the key of the cache in front of Flint to secure it, or made his pitch to be his fellow captain in the fight. I also take a petty pleasure in the fact that Vane sacrificed himself when he went to his rescue LOL.

I like that he convinced Blackbeard to fight alongside them, but sweetie, you have NOTHING to prove to that asshole. His opinion is worthless (between his “strife is good” and Vane’s “comfort is for women” takes... ugh. They remind me of the exact discourse among leftism I hate okay xDD. In Vane’s case I at least get where he’s coming from and I even agree in part, but Blackbeard is even more boring).

Misc

-I love Billy’s more and more insidious antagonism towards Flint lmfao (yes, Flint is also one of my Forever Faves. This is compatible AND the kind of thing that would make me appreciate Billy more. I love irreverence, period). It starts with subtle ways of trying to poison Flint and Silver’s relationship (telling Silver Flint doesn’t see him as an equal, sending Silver to deliver Flint’s message instead of Flint himself, etc.). I laughed at him saying he’s all for Flint sacrificing himself for the crew since it’d be the “first selfless thing I’ve seen him do!” lol. Or that he “wants a good view when things catch up with Flint and the world makes sense again”. And ofc, creating the legend of Long John Silver. You just know he remembered Flint’s out of left field “I AM YOUR KING” and said “not on my fucking watch” xDD. And I love the irony of him being the one delivering black spots LOL.

-Did it really took that long for Anne and Flint to share some freaking words smh. Barely, but I’ll take it. I liked the moment where Jack references Max as “Anne’s lost love” and Flint does that Closeted Queer Observing A Queer Couple Look lol (he did the same when he was witness to Max and Eleanor’s fight. You need more queer friends, Flint :P).

-I liked Mrs. Hudson from the moment that she told Eleanor that the only difference she saw between her and other ladies is that their families have better lawyer --which meant Eleanor was the first one she could be rude towards xD--, and accused her of living of her father’s nepotism LOL. I hope she ends up in a good place and safe back with her kids.

-I can’t say I care much about Vane or his relationship with Eleanor, but his death and her hand on it were very well written IMO.

-I find Rogers so inherently unlikeable in every way LMFAO. And as hypocritical as it might sound, part of it is the extramarital affair ngl. I hate storylines where a man married to a more “conventional” woman is ~attracted to one he perceives as “stronger”, “fiercer”, and more worthy of himself (as if his opinion on the matter is worth shit) --only to eventually try and make the new woman more conventional once he “has” her. This one hasn’t gone all the way there but it has traces of that trope and I loathe it with all my heart.

-The only moment I managed to pay attention to Blackbeard was when he mentioned he had shrapnel advancing towards his heart, and for anyone who knows me a little, you know it’s because my brain linked that to Tony Stark lmfao. *Sighs* I just never like any version of Blackbeard, period. I find them so boring. He’s the opposite of Long John Silver that way, because I’ve loved every single version I’ve encountered so far.

-The way Spain is portrayed in this show is so... unusual. Especially for USA content in my experience. One day I’m going to have to do some more research and write about how Spain (and in particular Spanish violence -inter and intranational) is portrayed across the ocean.

you’d think, with zane being the one who’s been around the proverbial block over his years, he’d be on multiple planets throughout his entire trailer. but like 80% of it is pandora. maybe the other VHs are getting featured on other planets? at least he has a reason to be on pandora outside of the main story (maybe looking for his brothers, maybe trying to piss on their graves, who knows)

i don’t know what he’s reaching for but uh

perhapeth the blades are activated by swinging his arm out? could be a hold over from when they were like... actual metal blades and needed to be knocked out into position

issue #23 made me really heccin’ emo over eggman and sonic. i was prepared for it, but also ?? not prepared??? holy frick im just gonna ramble under the cut.

first of all, i’m just gonna’ idly ramble about some things i noticed.

Eggman, literally 11 issues ago:

he makes these off remarks and then changes his mind whenever it’s convenient for him smh. that or hes a freaking liar and. WELL THAT’S PRETTY TRUE HONESTLY.

i’ma be honest fam starline is a freaking mood rn. it’s ?? so dumb?? LIKE EGGMAN WHERE IS YOUR FUCKING FAILSAFE UR SOLUTION WAS “not touching the robots hurr durr” PL EASE.

In retrospect, though, this is an interesting parallel to Forces because he’d apparently learned from his mistakes. TBF, and it has been brought up elsewhere on tumblr, this is a man recovering from amnesia. He must’ve just not gotten to that part. OR HE’S JUST. DUMB AND ARROGANT. Like, yeah, sure, there’s no vaccine - lol the heroes can’t fix anything & it also means you’re valuable because you’re the one person who can. BUT COME ON EGGMAN.

my friend actually predicted this holy shit. i was rambling abt a discussion we had in the egg cult, where we were talking about the possibility of sonic infecting eggman to blackmail him into getting the cure because he’s reached the point?? hes so done with eggman’s shit??? all his friends are in danger and hes backed into a wall what else is he to do than do the one thing he doesn’t want to: use eggman’s tactics against him?

and my friend was like:

LIKE. IT IS A HUGE RISK, and Sonic went FOR IT. I’M SCREAMING TBH.

THIS CONFRONTATION WAS SO FUCKING RAW YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND. I thought I was ready for it but I really, REALLY wasn’t. I love the little details of Starline bein’ like: “oh fuck” - usually he’s pretty cocky around Sonic but uh. HE’S INFECTED NOW. And the zero remark - idk if that’s intentional on the writer’s part but ZERO TO HERO anyone?

anyway toxi broke down crying at this point. you have no idea how much i was sobbing over my blue son just. pouring out his heart to his nemesis. that’s top tier tearjerking material. also starline passive aggressively readjusting his outfit lmfao. BITCH IM FABULOUS. but man the usage of ‘ BE’ and ‘LIKE’ - Sonic knows who Eggman is; he’d never ask him to be something he’s not. but it’s also a reiteration of sonic’s want to see good in him; being LIKE tinker is a statement in that he wanted eggman to be who he was, but NOT to go back. to do good for the world. have it be his own decision, because deep deep down:

isn’t that what he really wants?

Also, although there are those sickly sweet descriptions, the usage of ellipses in this narrative really fucks me up because you can practially hear the gradual realization in eggman’s voice. his mockery starts out so !!! but it just eventually gets straight to the point, as a list. as a routine. because he was used to it. and because, some part of him misses it. notice the usage of ‘need’ and ‘use’. they needed him, and yet he used the people that appreciated him sm like puppets.

some nice guilt there, huh, doc?

ALSO I SPENT LIKE, HOURS TRYING TO FIND THIS EXACT DIALOGUE, but Eggman has a conversation in Dark Brotherhood with Sonic and makes this remark:

LIKE??? this isn’t new to his character, actually? Ignoring the ken penders thing bc smh. Going by this game he’s actually kind of okay with that set up. And he just works so well with the others too??? this isn’t even taking into account the other games he’s teamed up with them. I’m sorry but my head just goes back to this line so many times; it’s one of the ones that stick with me, along with ‘complicated guy’ from lost world. HE COULD!! legitimately do good. and he actually doesn’t find it too bad??? IM EMO MAN...

and IMAGINE making super cool things that people genuinely like... eggman has a HUGE ego, that much is very apparent; he’s super big on appreciation as comes with. and with tinker? he had that - he felt appreciated and loved. people LIKED what he made, and he didn’t have to bend over backwards to have that. his work felt included and he didn’t have to take that appreciation by force like he did with his lackeys (which half the time was fake anyway) .

first and foremost - WE SEE THAT OPEN YOUR HEART REFERENCE, IDW. also sonic’s frustration here, in comparison to the lil smile the panel before - he’s just!! “WHY CANT YOU WAKE THE FRICK UP OLD MAN”. the justification here seems a tad bit like DENIAL to me. and the justification seems... kind of odd from him? since when does EGGMAN justify anything he does? He does what he wants and when he wants, because he’s the E.G.G.M.A.N. he doesn’t care what anyone thinks... right?

it’s because - especially with the usage of better - he didn’t like where that train of thought was going. for once, he’s justifying himself - because the alternative is admitting sonic is right. that he did like that life. that he’d want to go back. throw it in a hierachy and it’s all so simple, right?

also the inclusion of open your heart lyrics here. the incident with chaos was just as catastrophic. and these lyrics in context of the previous panel, highlights how sonic and eggman both seek unity and peace but in their own ways; eggman’s is just evil. it seems a little bit of a diversion to me - to antagonise sonic and make him forget about it. what better way to do that than to relate to him? ‘own styles that we won’t change’ highlights a stubbornness in ways, too, especially with the current context of eggman denying his old life. ALSO IT IS LITERALLY TELLING EGGMAN TO OPEN HIS HEART.

and ngl this seems like idle banter to hide the fact he genuinely felt remorse for his actions for a second. because lbr he has a habit of being all talk when a plan goes wrong or suffering inside,

which starline does quite pointedly explain.

As I was saying above, Sonic has no choice in what to do now - he’s reaching his limit. OR ELSE. hes pondering doing the thing he doesnt want to do. and honestly, ‘you can’t stop me. no one can,’ is so hardhitting not just because of its looming threat, but because of how much it solidifies for sonic that he can’t take the chance anymore. if anyone is going to change eggman, it has to be himself.

also can i just cry over how much sonic trusts tails. im getting sa2 flashbacks.

also man i’d like to point out the specific use of ‘lock you away forever’. it coooould be a reference to sonic’s time imprisoned during the events of sonic forces. bitterness?

NOT SAYING I CALLED IT, BUT I CALLED IT. it still hurts though. and wow, it really is horrifying when eggman fears his own heccin’ creation, huh?

i live for sonic being passive aggressive with eggman. give me more please.

im immensely concerned the direction starline is going, honestly. but it does say a lot about eggman; how he’ll keep trying the same things expecting different results, but failing and never seeing that. because he’s EGGMAN; every plan is brilliant by default!

i love how sonic just !!! SHOT... THE MOMENT HE WAS REMINDED WHAT WAS AT STAKE. son i love you so much you’re doing great sweetie

also, man, can we talk about eggman avoiding his blatant faults, and shoving his failures onto someone else? because this little scene here - eggman ur literally the one who crashed the thing. it had absolutely nothing to do with sonic. i feel as though this is symbolism of his self-destructive nature, honestly. hes always gotta make things harder for himself. (also starline’s face is killing me)

Eggman does what he has to, but technology won’t work every time you kick it. he thinks he can get everything through force but we have several instances in idw where force did NOT work out; you’re not gonna get far, egghead.

MHM, and just who does that sound like, Eggman? honestly the mirrors between these two are seriously destroying me. although sonic is in a horrible position, so is eggman; he likes to think he’s won the war, but hes surpassed his own expectations, and that’s going to backfire on him eventually. hes stubborn to admit he has NO REIGN over this and they’re all doomed, so he’s pinning his failures / loss on Sonic.

is that the amnesia kicking ya in the shin, eggman? or sonic’s reality check? either way, the doc hates emotions. dammit man why you gotta make him emo

future eggman is going to kick past eggman in the kneecaps. it’s times like this ur reminded how much of a kid he is. eugh but that’s work i want my victory and senseless destruction now. honestly if the doc is after success, he is certainly not getting it this way and I AM FEARING FOR EVERYONE’S LIVES. he’ll probably have to work with what’s left of the resistance like the back end of most games at some point.

I’m getting a little burnt out but i can’t forget my son and how much he hurts me.

first of all that third panel terrifies me. the fact it GOT that far does me great concern. the RED EYES? that’s pushing it fam i dont like that. the expressions are also just freaking destroying me; they’ve been PERFECT this issue. and the fact sonic is at his weakest when he feels like he’s failed everyone hurts me deeply. he has SO much on his shoulders and its getting too overwhelming for him.

also man... the whole thing with eggman... just stuff me man. but it hurts all the more because it’s so glaringly clear that there is?? some good in eggman??? he just. doesn’t want to admit it. and unfortunately these aren’t good circumstances to debate on that.

ANYWAY, THAT ISSUE WAS AGONY AND IM STILL REELING AND HAVENT EVEN. TALKED ALL THAT MUCH ABOUT SONIC HERE (on account of this being eggman’s blog) but idk if i’ll write anything on that.
