So often, I talk with people who present me with very reasonable expectations for how things will turn out for them. They even use past evidence and let me know that there has never been a better precedent than the reasonable (yet negative) outcome that they have so carefully outlined. I sit quietly and listen. My job isn’t to “convince” them not is it to “change” them. My sole purpose is to let them get everything out of their system. I want to hear it all but I genuinely care. I love people and their stories. Once they have shared their story and struggles with me, my goal is simple: I agree with them. They are right! If you believe you will always be “the way you are currently” then you are probably right. Obviously, this is not why they paid for life coaching! There’s enough Yes men and women in the world already. I agree with them and then I ask them to give me a possible scenario of how someone might overcome that struggle... And then I ask for another possible scenario, and then another one. Eventually, they begin to see there are multiple solutions/outcomes to any struggle.(Hint: They aren’t all negative or bad). This week, look at a struggle in your life from multiple angles and come up with multiple outcomes, good and bad. Then choose an outcome that you’d like to see happen and ask yourself how you might be able to get there.
