Some people have asked me why I spent 7 hours queuing overnight to pay my last respects to our late Founding Father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, even though we had to catch an early morning flight the next day. I replied that the question should be "Why not?" This is a man who spent 60 years in public service with a steely commitment to making Singapore a better place for every single Singaporean. Everyone knows we have world class architecture in downtown Singapore, but our heartlands are also beautifully designed, with plenty of greenery and public amenities. Every household has access to potable water with the turn of a tap. Mr Lee built a Singapore that is one of the best places to live in the world, not just for elites or the upper middle class, but for every single Singaporean. Thank you, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. #rememberingleekuanyew #thankyew #leekuanyew #singapore #sg50 #eatandtravelwithus #RIP

Through this post I would like to express my deepest and sincerest condolences to the family, relatives and friends of Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. I am not Singaporean but I have read lots of great things about you. I believe it was through your leadership why Singapore prospered to a country that it was today. Thank you very much for inspiring me. And if the time comes and I become a leader I will try my very best to be like you. I felt sad when I found out about your passing but I realized you also needed to rest. I know your legacy will live on and you will never be forgotten. #leekuanyew #rememberingleekuanyew #potd

This pair of shoe moulds was used by Lee Hoi Wah and subsequently his son Lee Kean Siong to make at least 16 pairs of identical black leather shoes for Mr Lee Kuan Yew over 25 years. You can now see the moulds on display at "Memory in Prints: Lee Kuan Yew and Us" exhibition. Today is the last day at Tampines Community Plaza (beside Tampines1). After Tampines, public can still catch the exhibition at: Toa Payoh (HDB Hub Foyer) Aug 15 to Aug 19 (10am to 9pm) The Seletar Mall Aug 27 to Aug 30 (10am to 9pm) Jurong Spring Community Club Aug 31 (3.30pm to 9pm), Sept 1 to Sept 7 (10am to 9pm) #rememberingLeeKuanYew #LeeKuanYew #lianhewanbao #OurTampines #MyBestHome

The crowd shouted his name, clapping and cheering. And thinking id missed the cortège, whipped out my ipod to take a goodbye shot as a keepsake for myself. But then I realised I didn't miss it. But what struck me when I looked at it this closely this morning, thinking about him and the prospects of our nation after reading a letter from another grieving Singaporean...I was really moved by this gentleman who stood in front with his teenage son. Helen is right, standing together as one people is everything he'd work for. And if we want another 50years of progress, we need that. #rememberingleekuanyew

The End of an Era
Last week was one of the most unforgettable weeks in my life. Singapore’s first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew passed away, and the nation was in mourning.
There were many sniffles and sobs peppered throughout the week, as we read the slew of articles about Mr Lee’s sacrifices for the nation, or watched another one of his powerful speeches which moved and drove the country to success. There were many tears of sorrow, seeing family members, Ministers – our Prime Minister – break down on national television during the delivery of emotional eulogies and tributes. There were many heart-breaking moments, seeing fellow Singaporeans especially those of the older generation, kneeling and wailing as they uttered their goodbyes, some soaked to the skin.
But, there were also many happy tears. My country showed a side never seen before, unexpectedly bonding and exemplifying the Singapore spirit under such solemn circumstances.
Hundreds of thousands of people braved hours of the sweltering sun and stayed up through the wee hours just for a few seconds to pay their final respects. Others, through sheer determination, who lined the roads while being drenched in the pouring rain, for a glimpse at the cortege on the last day. The planning committees swiftly making on-the-spot decisions and helping to ensure the logistics went as smoothly as possible. Men in uniform toiling through the night to prepare the queue lines and the funeral procession. Volunteers, organisations, and companies handing out free food, drinks, umbrellas, ponchos, and other items while shouting encouraging words to the queuers. Fellow Singaporeans looking out for one another, smiling and being courteous through this period of mourning.
A nation of champion grumblers? How we've matured and evolved.
Your job here is done, Mr Lee. Rest in peace.
