If you have not tried relistening to something you habe trouble comprehending in your target language, please try sometime.

Pick something you could read and comprehend 95% or more of the words in (so look at the transcript or text chapter). That means for every 100 words, you need to look up 5 words or less. So for a 500 word page of text, you would need to look up 25 words or less to understand it). You can pick something you understand less of. But if you pick something you know 95% of the words for, then you understand enough that even if you looked up NO words you could comprehend most of it and guess the meanings of most of the unknown words. Pick the material. Maybe it's a chapter you've already read (so even if you only understood 80% you've looked up unknown words already while reading and NOW understand 95% or more), or a podcast for your language learning level (so it has a transcript with nearly all words you know).

Then listen to the audio version. The first time you listen to it, you will maybe recognize 20-50% of the words. Maybe more words if you already have good listening comprehension. And you KNOW you know most of these words if you were reading instead of listening. So you listen a second time, recognize more words. Listen 5-10 times. Listen until you no longer recognize ANY more words. Listen until you no longer recognize and understand any fill phrases or sentences. You can probably listen 20 times and keep recognizing New stuff (gaining listening comprehension of words and grammar you knew how to read already). So just listen until you're bored of the audio: since at that point you won't want to keep listening. And if you're unmotivated, it's not going to be something you can get yourself to keep doing.

Try it sometime, listen 5-10 times to something. You don't have to pay your full attention. Listen while browsing tumblr or other social media, reading a fanfiction, while driving or walking or doing chores, listen while playing a video game, while doing work (if you can work while some audio plays in the background). You will likely notice some improvement by the 5th listen, even if you were only listening in the background. If you notice enough improvement, that will help you decide if relistening is an exercise you want to keep doing sometimes.

Theres a lot of youtubers whove made good videos on relistening or repeated listening, how they do it, how it helps them. Im just repeating advice they've said, along wirh how it goes when I do it.

From my perspective, it can just be cool to see an audio you "barely comprehend" go to such a higher amount of comprehension, with so little effort of just replaying audio in the background. As far as improving listening comprehension goes, its one of the easier ways, in terms of low focus and being able to multitask, to drag listening skills closer to reading skills if your reading skills are higher. (Other activities that help are listening WHILE reading which is intense focus, or reading a transcript while listening then re-listening without transcript and going back and forth doing that, speaking to people).

Relistening--Pilot

Of all the episodes of WTNV, I think I've listened to this one the most. I remember back during high school I used to listen to it a lot in order to sleep at night. I dunno if I was tricking myself, but I definetly felt a little sleepy listening to this.

What struck me most listening to this episode was how monotoned Cecil's voice and personality was. Having listened up to Year Five and knowing Cecil as the goofy, oversharing and emotional person he becomes as his character progresses, it was strange hearing this version of him.

This Cecil wears a suit and tie. Future Cecil wears the wonderful and bizzare outfits we now know he wears. Does that make sense?

The same can actually be said for Carlos, as he's set up as a somewhat realistic scientist. Someone who is here to explore the weirdness from a point of view that's similar to our world. If Night Vale were a standard show, Carlos would be the protagonist who saves the day whenever weird stuff threatens the people of Night Vale. If I remember correctly, this continues to be the case until Dylan Marron took over as his voice actor.

The whole episode felt a lot more grounded, which is weird to say about a lovecraftian horror. The weirdness was all very approachable when compared to the stuff that comes later, like the Beagle Puppy (good boy). It makes the episode a nice little taster of what's to come.

It was also fun seeing things, like the Underground City, Dog Park, and Desert Bluffs, which all end up playing a big role in future Years.

But, the problem with what I’ve been reading in the past two weeks— I went and did some maths, darling listeners. I have bookmarked, and note that I bookmark about fifty percent of what I read, nine hundred and eighty thousand words of Untamed fanfic since December 1st. A: Good Lord. F: I mean, you say “problem,” Macey. I think we can reframe this as an achievement. M: That’s a million fucking words. And, what’s worse, eight hundred and sixty thousand words of Scum Villain fic since December 25th. Darling listeners, it’s January fucking 3rd! F: See, when you first started talking about “scum villain” fic, I was like, “Is this a code word for something?” [M laughs] F: Like, who is this scum villain, in all of the canons that we’re currently talking about? I did not realize it’s its own thing. R: I’m also— M: It’s its own thing. R: —just want to note that it is untranslated and unadapted, so— [M laughs] R: —the fact that you’ve read eight hundred and sixty thousand words of fic is just, like, we should double the word count to account for that. M: Listen, okay, in my fair— A: That’s peak Macey. M: In fairness, four hundred and sixty thousand words of that was palace harem AU, which is so much my bullshit that I can’t even describe it. Alex, save us! A: Yeah, I have only been reading Untamed fanfiction— M: Oh god.
