I'll have to agree with some ppl here. Even if the portrayal of Lisa can sometimes leave you with a sour feeling, that's the point of the show, a satire about basic mediocre american life and tbh, it captures it pretty well, the average american really IS misogynistic and punishes intellectualism due to his own ignorance. The Simpsons stands on a type of comedy that is not that usual nowadays, it is all show and no tell, it doesn't underestimates the comprehensive ability of it's viewers, it will show you just how society can be and it doesn't need to explain or put a character through some reivindication to make a statement. If Marge DOES leave Homer, the whole message of "mediocrity and lack of opportunities in women in small towns ,result in so many wives with carless husbands and unsuccessful marriages" gets lost. But i get where you're going, i just think the problem with the show isn't how it's done but rather how long they let it run. Because one thing is watching Lisa get punished for her intelligence a couple of times during the first seasons and other very differently is doing this through all 29 seasons. As you said the message gets a little messy. One thing that always bugged me is that the show should have ended decades ago but the producers just don't know when to let it go. They started putting financial profit over social commentary and THAT'S why the show gets so lazy and just lacks something. After all, as you said, the narrative style of a satire comedy can be only funny for some seasons, if you start overusing it with the pass of the years it gets dull and normalized and you no longer laugh about it but get concerned by it. The problem with the Simpson it's that it has been running for so long that every critic has been made and now they're just exploiting that. It's not that Lisa is shown suffering for being smart more than Lisa has been shown suffering for being smart for almost 30 YEARS and you start questioning, why?
this is long but very reasonably brutal
