Reiki, a traditional Japanese healing technique, has been gaining popularity worldwide for its profound impact on promoting holistic wellness. This ancient practice has been revered for its ability to balance the body, mind, and spirit, leading to a state of deep relaxation, reduced stress, and enhanced overall well-being. In this beginner's guide, we'll delve into the world of Reiki, exploring its definition, principles, and benefits, as well as its gentle and non-invasive approach to healing.
Reiki, pronounced "ray-key," is a Japanese word consisting of two syllables: "Rei," meaning "universal," and "Ki," meaning "life energy." This sacred practice was developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk, who sought to create a system of healing that would harmonize the body, mind, and spirit. Reiki is based on the concept that there is a universal life force energy that flows through all living things, and by channeling this energy, practitioners can facilitate healing, balance, and relaxation.
At the heart of Reiki lies the concept of Ki, or life energy. This energy is believed to be an intelligent, omnipresent force that permeates every aspect of existence. When our Ki is balanced and flowing freely, we experience optimal health, vitality, and well-being. However, when our Ki becomes blocked or imbalanced, we may experience physical, emotional, or mental distress. Reiki practitioners act as conduits for this universal energy, channeling it into the body to restore balance, harmony, and equilibrium.
One of the most appealing aspects of Reiki is its gentle and non-invasive approach to healing. Unlike other forms of therapy, Reiki does not involve physical manipulation, medication, or invasive procedures. Instead, practitioners use a series of gentle hand positions, either on or above the body, to channel the Reiki energy. This subtle yet powerful approach makes Reiki an ideal therapy for individuals of all ages, including those who may be sensitive to touch or have mobility limitations.
The History and Origins of Reiki
The Birth of Reiki: Mikao Usui in Early 20th Century Japan
Reiki, a holistic healing practice that has gained widespread popularity globally, date back to the early 20th century in Japan. The founder of Reiki, Mikao Usui, was a Japanese Buddhist monk who embarked on a profound spiritual journey that ultimately led to the development of this powerful healing modality. In this section, we will delve into the origins of Reiki, exploring Usui's spiritual awakening, his journey, and the transmission of Reiki teachings through his students and subsequent lineages.
The Early Life and Spiritual Quest of Mikao Usui
Mikao Usui was born in 1865 in Taniai, Japan, during a time of great social and cultural change. Growing up in a Buddhist family, Usui was deeply influenced by the teachings of Buddhism and developed a strong interest in spirituality and meditation from an early age. As a young man, Usui worked as a businessman, but he felt unfulfilled and restless, sensing that there was more to life than material success.
In 1914, Usui embarked on a 21-day meditation retreat on Mount Kurama, a sacred site in Japan, seeking spiritual enlightenment and a deeper understanding of the universe. During this intense period of meditation, Usui experienced a profound spiritual awakening, which he described as a "Reiki" or "Universal Life Force" energy. This transformative experience marked the beginning of Usui's journey to develop a system of healing that would later become known as Reiki.
Following his spiritual awakening, Usui spent several years refining his understanding of the Reiki energy and developing a system of hand positions and techniques to channel and transmit this energy. He created a set of principles, known as the "Reiki Ideals," which emphasized the importance of living a balanced and compassionate life. Usui's teachings were rooted in the principles of Buddhism, Shintoism, and Taoism, and he drew inspiration from various spiritual traditions.
In 1922, Usui founded the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, a Reiki school in Tokyo, where he began teaching his system of healing to a small group of students. His teachings emphasized the importance of self-healing, spiritual growth, and service to others. Usui's students were drawn from various walks of life, including Buddhist monks, martial artists, and businesspeople, all of whom were seeking a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
After Usui's passing in 1926, his students continued to develop and refine the Reiki system. One of his most prominent students, Chujiro Hayashi, a Japanese naval officer, played a crucial role in spreading Reiki teachings throughout Japan. Hayashi developed his own style of Reiki, which emphasized the importance of intuition and spiritual connection.
In the 1930s, Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American woman, traveled to Japan to study Reiki with Hayashi. Takata became a prominent Reiki master and introduced the practice to the West, establishing the first Reiki school in Hawaii in 1938. Takata's teachings emphasized the importance of simplicity, practicality, and accessibility, making Reiki more appealing to a wider audience.
Today, Reiki has evolved into various styles and lineages, each with its unique approach and emphasis. Despite these variations, the core principles of Reiki remain rooted in Usui's original teachings, emphasizing the importance of spiritual growth, self-healing, and service to others.
Understanding Reiki Energy
The Power of Universal Life Force
Reiki energy is a mysterious and powerful force that has been harnessed and utilized for centuries to promote healing, balance, and harmony in the body, mind, and spirit. At its core, Reiki energy is a universal life force energy that permeates every living being and connects us all. In this section, we'll delve deeper into the concept of Reiki energy, explore how it works to balance our being, and examine its similarities and differences with other forms of energy healing.
The Concept of Reiki Energy as Universal Life Force
Reiki energy is often referred to as "ki" or "chi," which is a Japanese term for the universal life force energy that flows through all living things. This energy is believed to be an intelligent, conscious force that is present everywhere and in everything. It is the spark that animates life, and it is what connects us to the natural world and to each other.
Reiki energy is not limited to the physical body, but rather it is a multidimensional energy that permeates every level of our being, including our emotions, thoughts, and spirit. It is the energy that flows through our chakras, or energy centers, and it is what gives us life, vitality, and consciousness.
Reiki energy works to balance the body, mind, and spirit by flowing into the body through the hands of a trained Reiki practitioner. The practitioner acts as a conduit for the energy, allowing it to flow into the client's body and energy field.
As the Reiki energy flows into the body, it begins to balance and harmonize the body's energy, releasing blockages and restoring balance to the chakras and energy centers. This, in turn, can lead to a range of benefits, including:
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Improved mood and emotional well-being
- Enhanced physical health and vitality
- Increased mental clarity and focus
- Deeper sense of connection to oneself and others
Reiki energy also works to balance the mind and spirit by promoting a sense of calm, peace, and inner harmony. It can help to quiet the mind, reduce worries and fears, and increase feelings of joy, love, and compassion.
Similarities and Differences with Other Forms of Energy Healing
Reiki energy is often compared to other forms of energy healing, such as acupuncture, qigong, and therapeutic touch. While these modalities share some similarities with Reiki, they also have some key differences.
Similarities:
- All of these modalities work with the body's energy system to promote balance and harmony.
- They all recognize the importance of the body's energy field in maintaining health and well-being.
- They all involve the transfer of energy from the practitioner to the client.
Differences:
- Reiki energy is a more spiritual and intuitive form of energy healing, whereas acupuncture and qigong are more physically based.
- Reiki energy is typically transferred through the hands of the practitioner, whereas acupuncture involves the insertion of needles into specific points on the body.
- Reiki energy is often used for more emotional and spiritual issues, whereas therapeutic touch is often used for physical pain and discomfort.
Reiki energy is a powerful and mysterious force that has the ability to balance and harmonize the body, mind, and spirit. By understanding the concept of Reiki energy as a universal life force, we can begin to appreciate its potential to transform our lives and promote deep healing and harmony. Whether you're a seasoned Reiki practitioner or just starting out on your energy healing journey, Reiki energy is a powerful tool that can help you to connect with your inner self and live a more balanced, harmonious, and fulfilling life.
The Reiki Healing Process
A Journey of Balance and Harmony
The Reiki healing process is a gentle, non-invasive, and deeply personal journey that can be facilitated in-person or through distance healing. In this section, we'll delve into the intricacies of the Reiki healing process, exploring the role of the practitioner, the physical and emotional sensations experienced during a session, and the benefits of this ancient healing art.
Receiving a Reiki Treatment: In-Person and Distance Healing
A traditional Reiki treatment typically takes place in a peaceful, serene environment, where the practitioner and recipient sit or lie comfortably. The practitioner, trained in the art of Reiki, will gently place their hands on or above the recipient's body, using a series of predetermined hand positions. These hand positions are designed to channel and direct the universal life force energy, known as Ki, to specific areas of the body, promoting balance and harmony.
In contrast, distance Reiki healing allows the practitioner to transmit Reiki energy to the recipient remotely, often through a meditation or visualization process. This modality is particularly useful for those who cannot physically attend a session or require ongoing support. The practitioner will typically set a specific time and intention for the distance healing, ensuring that the recipient receives the Reiki energy at the designated time.
The Role of the Reiki Practitioner
The Reiki practitioner plays a crucial role in the healing process, serving as a conduit for the universal life force energy. Through their training and attunement, the practitioner is able to tap into this energy vibration, allowing it to flow through their hands and into the recipient's body. The practitioner's intention, focus, and compassion create a sacred space for the recipient to relax, let go, and receive the healing energy.
The practitioner's role is not to diagnose or treat specific ailments, but rather to facilitate the flow of Reiki energy, allowing the recipient's body to respond and heal in its own unique way. By creating a safe and supportive environment, the practitioner empowers the recipient to take an active role in their healing journey, promoting self-awareness, relaxation, and spiritual growth.
Physical Sensations and Emotional Experiences
During a Reiki session, recipients often report a range of physical sensations and emotional experiences, including:
- Deep relaxation: A sense of calm and tranquility, as the body and mind let go of tension and stress.
- Warmth or tingling: A gentle, soothing warmth or tingling sensation in the areas where the practitioner's hands are placed.
- Energy flow: A sense of energy moving through the body, often accompanied by a feeling of lightness or expansion.
- Emotional releases: Tears, laughter, or other emotional expressions, as the body releases stored emotions and tension.
- Visualization and imagery: Vivid visuals, colors, or patterns, as the recipient's subconscious mind processes and integrates the Reiki energy.
- Sense of connection: A feeling of unity and connection with the universe, others, or oneself.
These physical sensations and emotional experiences are unique to each individual and can vary greatly from session to session. The Reiki healing process is a highly personal and subjective experience, and the practitioner's role is to support and guide the recipient through this journey of self-discovery and healing.
The Reiki healing process is a powerful and transformative experience that offers a range of benefits for body, mind, and spirit. By understanding the role of the practitioner, the process of receiving a Reiki treatment, and the physical and emotional sensations experienced during a session, individuals can embark on a journey of balance, harmony, and spiritual growth.
The Principles of Reiki
A Path to Personal Growth, Healing, and Spiritual Development
Reiki is not just about channeling universal energy to balance the body, mind, and spirit. It is also a spiritual journey that guides practitioners towards a path of personal growth, self-awareness, and spiritual development. At the heart of Reiki lies a set of principles, known as the Five Reiki Principles or Precepts, taught by Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki. These principles serve as a moral code, guiding practitioners to live a more mindful, compassionate, and balanced life.
The Five Reiki Principles:
Just for today, I will not anger
Just for today, I will not worry
Just for today, I will be grateful
Just for today, I will do my work honestly
Just for today, I will be kind to all living things
Significance of Each Principle:
Just for today, I will not anger: This principle encourages practitioners to let go of anger, resentment, and frustration. By doing so, they create space for peace, understanding, and compassion to flourish. When we choose not to anger, we break free from the cycle of negativity and cultivate a more harmonious relationship with ourselves and others.
Just for today, I will not worry: Worrying is a natural human response, but it can also be a significant obstacle to personal growth. This principle reminds us to focus on the present moment, rather than dwelling on the past or fearing the future. By letting go of worry, we open ourselves up to the possibilities of the present and trust in the universe's plan.
Just for today, I will be grateful: Gratitude is a powerful catalyst for positive change. When we focus on what we're thankful for, we shift our attention from lack to abundance, from scarcity to prosperity. This principle encourages practitioners to appreciate the beauty and blessings in their lives, no matter how small they may seem.
Just for today, I will do my work honestly: This principle emphasizes the importance of integrity, accountability, and responsibility. By doing our work honestly, we build trust with ourselves and others, and we create a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Honesty also fosters a deeper connection with our true nature and promotes personal growth.
Just for today, I will be kind to all living things: This principle extends beyond human relationships, encompassing all living beings, including animals, plants, and the environment. By choosing kindness, we recognize our interconnectedness with the world around us and cultivate a sense of compassion, empathy, and understanding.
Incorporating the Reiki Principles into Daily Life:
While these principles are simple, they require commitment and practice to integrate into daily life. Here are some examples of how practitioners can incorporate the Reiki principles into their daily lives:
- Start each day by reciting the Five Reiki Principles, either aloud or to yourself, to set a positive tone for the day.
- Practice mindfulness and meditation to cultivate a sense of inner peace and reduce anger, worry, and stress.
- Keep a gratitude journal to focus on the positive aspects of your life and express appreciation for the blessings you receive.
- Engage in acts of kindness, such as volunteering, donating to charity, or simply offering a helping hand to someone in need.
- Reflect on your actions and intentions, ensuring that they align with your values and promote honesty, integrity, and responsibility.
By embracing the Five Reiki Principles, practitioners can embark on a transformative journey of personal growth, healing, and spiritual development. These principles serve as a guiding light, illuminating the path to a more balanced, compassionate, and fulfilling life.

Types of Reiki
Understanding the Variations
Reiki has evolved over the years, giving rise to various forms and styles. While the core principles of Reiki remain the same, different types of Reiki have emerged, each with its unique characteristics, techniques, and philosophies. In this section, we'll delve into the different types of Reiki, exploring their differences and similarities.
Traditional Usui Reiki
Developed by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk, Traditional Usui Reiki is the original form of Reiki. This style is based on Usui's teachings and is characterized by its simplicity, elegance, and spiritual depth. Traditional Usui Reiki focuses on the spiritual growth and self-awareness of the practitioner, emphasizing the importance of meditation, self-reflection, and personal development.
In Traditional Usui Reiki, there are four levels of training, each with its own set of symbols, techniques, and attunements. The practice is centered around the concept of "just for today," encouraging practitioners to live in the present moment and let go of worries about the past or future.
Western Reiki
Western Reiki, also known as Modern Reiki, emerged in the 1980s as a response to the growing interest in Reiki in the Western world. This style of Reiki is more flexible and adaptable than Traditional Usui Reiki, incorporating various techniques and philosophies from other healing modalities.
Western Reiki often blends Reiki with other energy healing practices, such as chakra balancing, aura cleansing, and meditation. This style of Reiki is more focused on the physical and emotional aspects of healing, rather than the spiritual and philosophical aspects emphasized in Traditional Usui Reiki.
Other Forms of Reiki
In addition to Traditional Usui Reiki and Western Reiki, there are several other forms of Reiki that have evolved over the years. Some of these include:
- Karuna Reiki: Developed by William Lee Rand, Karuna Reiki is a more spiritual and intuitive form of Reiki. It emphasizes the importance of compassion, love, and kindness in the healing process.
- Holy Fire Reiki: Introduced by William Lee Rand, Holy Fire Reiki is a newer form of Reiki that combines the principles of Traditional Usui Reiki with the power of holy fire, a spiritual energy believed to promote healing and transformation.
- Tibetan Reiki: This style of Reiki incorporates Tibetan Buddhist principles and techniques, such as the use of sacred symbols and mantras, to promote spiritual growth and healing.
- Crystal Reiki: This form of Reiki combines the principles of Reiki with the healing properties of crystals, using crystals to amplify and focus the Reiki energy.
Differences and Similarities
While the various forms of Reiki have their unique characteristics, they share a common goal: to promote healing, balance, and harmony in the body, mind, and spirit. Here are some key differences and similarities between the various forms of Reiki:
- Differences:
+ Focus: Traditional Usui Reiki focuses on spiritual growth and self-awareness, while Western Reiki and other forms of Reiki focus more on physical and emotional healing.
+ Techniques: Different forms of Reiki use varying techniques, such as the use of symbols, meditation, and breathwork.
+ Philosophy: Each form of Reiki has its own unique philosophy and approach to healing.
- Similarities:
+ Energy: All forms of Reiki work with the universal life force energy, channeling it through the practitioner's hands to promote healing.
+ Intention: The intention behind all forms of Reiki is to promote healing, balance, and harmony in the body, mind, and spirit.
+ Holistic approach: All forms of Reiki take a holistic approach to healing, recognizing the interconnectedness of the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our being.
While the various forms of Reiki have their differences, they share a common goal and philosophy. By understanding the different types of Reiki, practitioners can choose the style that resonates with them the most, and clients can select the form of Reiki that best suits their needs. Ultimately, the true essence of Reiki lies in its ability to promote healing, growth, and transformation, regardless of the specific style or form.
Dispelling Myths and Misconceptions
Unveiling the Truth About Reiki
Reiki has been shrouded in misconceptions and myths, leading to skepticism and misunderstandings about its origins, principles, and effectiveness. As a result, many people have been deterred from exploring the benefits of Reiki, missing out on its profound healing potential. In this section, we'll delve into the common misconceptions surrounding Reiki, providing evidence-based explanations and research to dispel these myths and shed light on the truth.
Myth 1: Reiki is a religion
One of the most prevalent misconceptions about Reiki is that it's a religion or affiliated with a specific spiritual belief system. This couldn't be further from the truth. Reiki is a spiritual practice, but it's not a religion. It's a universal energy healing modality that can be practiced by anyone, regardless of their religious beliefs or background. Reiki's principles are based on the concept of universal life force energy, which is not tied to any specific faith or doctrine.
Myth 2: Reiki is not scientifically proven
Many people believe that Reiki lacks scientific evidence to support its effectiveness. However, numerous studies have demonstrated the positive effects of Reiki on physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Research has shown that Reiki can:
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Improve sleep quality
- Enhance immune function
- Relieve pain and inflammation
- Support cancer treatment and recovery
These studies, along with many others, provide a solid foundation for the efficacy of Reiki as a healing modality.
Myth 3: Reiki is only for relaxation
While Reiki is indeed a powerful tool for relaxation and stress relief, its benefits extend far beyond that. Reiki can be used to:
- Accelerate wound healing and tissue repair
- Improve mental clarity and focus
- Enhance emotional balance and resilience
- Support addiction recovery and mental health
Reiki's applications are diverse and far-reaching, making it a valuable addition to any wellness routine.
Myth 4: Reiki is only for the sick or injured
Reiki is not just for those who are ill or injured. It's a preventative measure that can be used to maintain overall health and well-being. Regular Reiki practice can:
- Boost the immune system
- Enhance vitality and energy levels
- Improve mood and emotional stability
- Support personal growth and spiritual development
Myth 5: Reiki is a placebo effect
Some skeptics argue that Reiki's benefits are solely due to the placebo effect, where the individual's belief in the treatment leads to positive outcomes. However, studies have shown that Reiki can have a measurable impact on physiological markers, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels, indicating a tangible, physiological response to the treatment (10).
Clarifying Misunderstandings
Reiki's origins are often shrouded in mystery, leading to misconceptions about its history and principles. Here are some key clarifications:
- Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk, in the early 20th century.
- The word "Reiki" is derived from two Japanese words: "Rei," meaning universal, and "Ki," meaning life energy.
- Reiki is based on the concept of universal life force energy, which is believed to flow through all living things.
By dispelling these myths and misconceptions, we hope to provide a clearer understanding of Reiki and its benefits. Reiki is a powerful, evidence-based healing modality that can be used to support overall health, well-being, and spiritual growth.

By tapping into this energy, we can experience profound healing and transformation, and awaken to our full potential as human beings.
So, we invite you to take the next step on your Reiki journey, to explore this practice further, and to experience its benefits for yourself. Whether you are seeking to improve your health, enhance your well-being, or deepen your spiritual connection, Reiki offers a powerful and holistic approach to healing and growth.

Sunday 28th August 2016: So, after an….eventful…night at Rufford Abbey last night, a bit of meditation today with my favourite Native American guide was just what I needed to save my sanity and get me grounded again. Thank you so much for the guidance Rachel Surtees, I’m eternally grateful. And for anyone who cares to know what my Reiki guide looks like….this is the closest I could find, he dresses like the pic on the left yet his hair is always down like the one on the right. But even this handsome guy pales in comparison, ‘otherworldly beautiful’ is the best description I can think of.
