Which yugioh villians seems to have undeserved redemption arcs?

The abusive parents

That is my immediate answer. All of them, aside from Fuya/Nelson's mother who in the dub at least took accountability, changed for the better when she realized she was hurting her son, and was just never to the level of these other jerks I'm gonna talk about. None of these jackasses deserved redemption.

Gozaburo and Judai's offscreen parents thankfully didn't get the "redemption" treatment so I won't talk about how awful they are but from 5Ds onward, Yugioh has been doing this constantly and it pisses me off. Don't believe me? Here's a list off the top of my head. Spanning every show from 5Ds through Go Rush! Aside from Sevens.

Aki's father

I've been over this before but Yusei and the narrative itself forced Aki to forgive her emotionally and physically abusive father because this episode thinks her forgiving him was the only way to be "whole and good." This is still the most disgusting example of this pattern in Yugioh to me since at least none of the other characters were forced by characters in the story to forgive their abusers, they just did of their own volition for reasons I'll never understand.

Byron Arclight and Dr Faker

The former was quickly forgiven by his three kids who he used as pawns to gain number cards without so much as an onscreen conversation.

And the latter meanwhile was forgiven by Kaito and Haruto just because he's their dad I guess? Even though he was the villain of Zexal I and didn't give a single fuck about Kaito, his older son.

Eliphas

Maybe not forgiven by the characters (though possibly it's been a while since I've seen Zexal) but he was a shitty creator/father to Astral and a shitty leader to his people as he was constantly making all of them suffer with his awful decisions that did not have their best interests at heart yet his death is treated like some "noble sacrifice." NO. Too little too late. Rest in Hell.

Leo Akaba

This one's probably self-explanatory but he was a neglectful father to Reiji/Declan, abandoned him to start a war, disrespected his dead daughter's wishes, imprisoned four girls because they look like his daughter, and in doing all this, caused the revival of a literal DEMON who nearly destroyed the world. Declan rightfully stands up to him for this but in the end, Leo STILL otherwise gets off scott-free, not in jail or dead or anything, just vibing with the rest of the cast and the son he abandoned doesn't even seem to hold any ill will anymore. WHY?! He did all this world endingly horrible shit, didn't do shit to make up for it, and he ends the series with no consequences because?! What?! He "apologized"?! He "had reasons"?! NONE OF THAT JUSTIFIES GENOCIDE.

Himika Akaba

This bitch does not get nearly enough hate for grooming a traumatized child into a tool for war. She does NOT get to act like she's some "caring mother" to baby Reira/Riley after pulling that shit and roping her son into doing the same. He didn't, thankfully, he wanted Riley to have her own thoughts and feelings and not just the unfeeling vessel his mother groomed her to be but still. She STILL gets off scott-free for this and it's disgusting.

Kiyoshi Kogami

Okay, I'm cheating a bit since this guy was never redeemed or remotely treated as a good guy, thank god, but he fits this trend because Ryoken/Revolver, the son he neglected and traumatized, DID forgive him (even if the narrative/other characters don't) and continued to fight for his shitty ideals while being presented as a character we're supposed to sympathize with. This is more of a Ryoken character problem but it ties into this theme of shitty parents getting off scott-free in this franchise.

And if I had to guess, the next example of this disgusting trope is gonna end up being the Creator

Aka Otes's Earthdamar and the unnamed creator of the Velgearians. I hope he's not redeemed or forgiven. I hope he's condemned for creating an entire species just to be his pawns, MERGING WITH ONE OF THOSE PAWNS, and showing preferential treatment to Yudias over Kuaidul as well as a fucking card game over Kuaidul and the other Velgearians, both of which wrecked Kuaidul's mental and emotional state and contributed to him going down his villainous path. I know Yudias is known for forgiveness but come on he has to draw the line SOMEWHERE right?! Draw the line at the douche who basically ruined Kuaidul and Zwijo's lives, and sees them and the rest of you as things to use!

Sibling relationships and sibling abuse is one of my favorite topics to explore in fiction. Shitty siblings off the top of my head.

I really enjoy Zane Truesdale and Cyrus in Yu-Gi-Oh GX.

Reiji and Reira in Arc-V are really interesting for the first two seasons, but it ends with Reira being turned into a baby so they can start over so like, it's an ending that ruins the arc.

Mai Zen'in and Maki Zen'in in JJK, but that also ends with Mai committing suicide and being like "I was a bad sister all alone, therefore I deserve to die" so that ruins the arc too.

Azula and Zuko but I don't like the ending there because it reinforces good victim and bad victim instead of deconstructing it.

Seriously, MHA was a better deconstruction of good victim and bad victim, until it ended LIKE THAT.

Vincent Nightray and Elliot Nightray are really good siblings who have an amazing conflict where neither is demonized, and they get to reconcile and the ending is GOOD. They also both get great individual character arcs too.

Itachi and Sasuke in Naruto (this is one of my favorites, one of the few arcs in Naruto that got a good conclusion).

Rukia and Byakuya's relationship in Bleach is one of the best examples too, and when Byakuya gets his ass kicked for being a bad brother he spends the rest of the manga improving.

Ayato and Touka's relationship in Tokyo Ghoul, one of the few arcs that Tokyo Ghoul bothers to resolve, though a lot of their development is offscreened.

Starfire and Blackfire (I think you've read this.)

Mion and Shion from Higurashi When They Cry. Shion's character is a perfect tragedy. They get a happy ending eventually though, because of Time Loops.

That's also all I can think of for now. I'm very sad that a lot of these end with "I really like these siblings but the ending is so bad it completely ruins it".

“Perfect.” you smiled as you arranged the last rose in a vase. “How lovely.”

You had spent all day cleaning and redecorating to your hearts content. On a Saturday evening, you had finished your leftover homework and had began cleaning up. You washed the dishes, mopped the floors, and even cleaned the windows. A lot to do in such a short day, but you did it!

“Move it, Wide-Load! Careful your enormous ass doesn’t break something.” Yui’s high pitched voice caused you to flatten yourself against the wall. “That’s better.” she huffed as she walked past you. “Stay out of my way, thunder thighs.”

To say you and Yui were close...actually no. You two couldn’t be more divided. Her dad adopted you when you were only four. She’s hated you ever since. You wanted to have a relationship with her like all siblings did, but she couldn’t seem to stand you. It was always jokes, and they would get meaner and meaner by the day.

It got even worse when you two met the Sakamaki brothers. She has put up that cutesy façade that she always wore while you remained humble and realistic. You even remembered pushing her out of the way when Ayato lunged at her, pushing her BEHIND you to take a bite from Laito when she was in obvious distress, and standing abuse from Kanato when she dumbly gave him coffee instead of hot chocolate. It was all in a fit on panic and you still cared about her as if she was your sister. It was the only time she was ever thankful to you. After that it all went downhill.

“Why is she so cruel to me?” you sniffed as she walked off. You quickly wiped your eyes and walked the opposite side. “Guess I’d better prepare dinner, it’s getting late...”

“Dinner is served.” You walked out of the kitchen with a huge steaming pot to match the others. “I made curry tonight!”

“Y/N, you’re such a great cook.” Kanato boasted. “Better than some people.” Kanato sent a short glare at Yui, who almost burned down the kitchen once. After that day, you were the one to cook all the meals.

You paused, looking up at Yui with a sad glance. Of course she wouldn’t miss a chance to down you in front of everyone.

“...Um, I’m gonna go to bed.” you sighed. “Goodnight.” You stood up straight, shoving your dishtowel in your beltloop. “Enjoy, gentlemen.”

“Did you not eat today?” Reiji raised an eyebrow. “Y/N-”

“I’m not hungry.” was all you said before you stalked off. As you walked off, Yui had stuck her foot out, causing you to stumble and crash to the floor. You landed on your elbow, yelping in pain.

“Oops...sorry Y/N!” that sickeningly fake sweet voice had come back to the surface. “Oh my! I think I heard the house shake-”

You had fallen at Ayato’s feet and he was looking down at you. You instantly scrambled to your feet. Yui had told you to not look, or even touch the others. That was probably why she tripped you. She was the ‘bride’ and you were the pack mule, in her words. She would get all the attention and you were lucky if you were the leftovers.

Without another word, you scurried off, still wiping your eyes. Why was she so mean?!

The next day, you had made yourself practically invisible. You were getting ready to make lunch for everyone and silently praying no one would bring up the night prior. You were washing the dishes when you heard Yui oh so fakely trying to sound innocent.

“No Ayato! Please don’t bite me~” you heard her faintly whimper, or fakely whimper. How idiotic did she think these guys were? You shut your eyes in annoyance. Her voice could gag a maggot. 

“Wasn’t thinking of it.” the voice replied gruffly. You found that it was Ayato that Yui was practically chasing into the kitchen. As you put away the last dish, Ayato walked up behind you. “Hello there, cutie.”

You are so taken aback, you almost dropped the cup you had taken down. “Ayato! What are you-”

“Could you make me some takoyaki, pleaassee?~ I haven’t had it in so long and Ayato-kun is hungry.” he dug his head in the crook of your neck. “Damn, you’re soft. So soft~” he inhaled your scent. “You’re such a cutie” he giggled sweetly.

“You didn’t eat last night, so you must fill your stomach, Y/N. It’s not good for you to make this a habit.” Reiji set down a nice plate with a good serving of Carbonara in front of you. 

“T-thank you, Reiji.” you smiled, raising the glass to your lips.

“Anything for you, Angel.~” he smirked.

You abruptly stopped drinking, almost choking. You began coughing slightly. The wine that had been in your mouth had slightly ran down your chin, trailing down your neck and disappearing into your breasts. “I’m okay!” you looked at the boys.

Kanato was giggling covering his Teddy’s eye while he casually ate a cookie. 

Yui however, who had walked in, WAS LIVID. 

In a fit of terror, you tried to get up only to felt Laito’s hand grab a fistful of your hair and pulled your head back. He sunk his teeth even deeper into your skin.

“I want a taste too.” you felt fingers trail up your bare leg and trace lines under your skirt. You could tell it was Ayato’s voice, though. You felt a sharp, needle like pain on your calf. “Cutie-chan~, you’re so delicious.”

“Sexy-chan~ You’re taking this so well.” Laito cackled. 

“What’s going on here!” Yui made her presence known. No body seemed to care.

—Some headcanons of how I think their kids would behave and some cute fatherly things.

This has been sitting in my drafts for far too long.. I was going to add to it but never got around to it. So here it is~ I will add to these for a bit.

Shu

His kids would be very musical, obviously. They wouldn’t play to please Shu though. Shu made it clear that they are to do what they hav wfhm doing, and they found out they love music.

Well mannered kids. They aren’t lazy, but aren’t exactly overachievers either. Shu didn’t put a whole lot of pressure on them, but he did stress the importance of learning.

His kids will be multilingual: Japanese, Latin, and English will be their main languages. They learned these languages to get closer to their father since he sees those languages as valuable.

Nap time is their favorite time. They always cuddle up on Shu’s chest. He’ll rub their backs until they fall asleep. If requested, he’ll sing them a lullaby to help them fall asleep. They love his singing.

Shu would be very attached to his kids. He doesn’t have any trouble getting up and around if it’s for his children. They’re the light in his life. As his kids start to get older they realize he needs their help, so they’ll go out of their way to support him and get him up when they notice he’s struggling.

Reiji

Reiji is a worried father. His kids are anxious, yet confident. They’re able to hide their anxiety quite well.

His kids hold onto his legs when they’re nervous. Reiji tries not to coddle them too much, but he caves when they cling to him like that. He’ll scoop them up right away when they get too frightened. He wants them to feel loved.

His kids love science experiments. Reiji will do lots of fun little experiments with them (mostly nontoxic things because reiji is a nervous father and can’t let there be a chance his babies will get hurt). The kids love making volcanos with baking soda and vinegar.

They’re always dressed nicely. His son absolutely loves matching his suit with his fathers. Although by the end of the day the little guys suit will be disheveled from playing. Reiji’s daughter loves wearing glasses even though she doesn’t need them. She wants to be like him, but isn’t a big fan of suits and ties.

Loves teaching them stuff. It’s his favorite thing when he sees his little toddlers fingers on his lab table as they try and peek over the tall table. He’ll scold them for getting near dangerous chemicals without asking first, but then he’ll tell them all about it. He loves feeling needed.

The kids know when Reiji is truly mad, and when he’s just trying to discipline them. His silent fury is more terrifying than his scoldings.

Ayato

Lots and lots of pranks. His kids love pulling little stunts on their father. They’re quite cunning. Ayato returns this playful nature and will often prank them back. Shockingly he isn’t too mean to them. The pranks are lighthearted.

The kids love to get on Ayato’s shoulders. He’ll plop them on his shoulders when he’s shopping so he doesn’t have to hold them. His kids will grab on his hair and try to steer him using it (like ratatouille).

His kids are very bold. They aren’t too shy with anyone. They’re pint sized versions of Ayato. He won’t let them ever feel unworthy and not good enough, so they’ve turned out to be confident and happy.

Lots and lots of photos. Ayato loves making memories with his kids, and loves saving photos. He secretly spends hours each week putting together a special scrapbook for each moment he spends with his children.

Kanato

The kids cry, he cries back. Sometimes the other way around. Usually this ends with Kanato calming his kids. Sometimes his kids fake tears just to see their usually indifferent father rush to their side to calm them. Little master manipulators <3

His children all have their own stuffed animals. His son has Teddy Jr. Kanato likes the idea of his kids having a support stuffed animal, but he doesn’t ever want the kids to become overly dependent on them. He’ll make sure to be a good enough father so that never has to happen.

The kids will know how to bake. He’ll have a hard time learning that his kids aren’t his maids/butlers, and he can’t make them do everything for them.

Kanato loves matching his outfits with his child’s. They’ll go out in daddy daughter outfits all the time! Usually he hand sews them because he feels it shows his love better.

Kanato tries his best to make his kids feel loved. He’s testing ways to show his love through actions and words. He doesn’t want his kids to feel unloved and neglected like he did.

Laito

Laito is the type of father that is VERY body conscious. He’s extremely sensitive about helping his kids with bath time or using the bathroom. Cannot say no to a cute face. Subaru has such a hard time telling his adorable children no. They know just how to get to his heart. They’re masters at the puppy dog eyes.

Subaru is very delicate with his kids. He’ll lift them up gently. He’s gotten better after a while, but when the kids were newborns he had such a hard time holding them.

It’s his way of showing he loves them. He’ll give these journals to his kids when they move out so they can remember how much he cares for them.

His kids will be like little warriors. They’ll know how to protect themselves, AND they’ll have the compassion to protect others. They’ve learned this by watching their father protect them and any other person he sees in danger.

Her kids are well mannered and very kind. She raised them to choose to be kind because it’s what people deserve, not because they should be. Yui’s kids are very emotionally involved with everyone.

She never forces then to do anything they don’t want to. This includes things like volunteering or doing extra curricular activities. She wants her kids to do things out of the goodness of their hearts, not because they were forced to.

Yui’s kids love volunteering. They often will attend school bake sales, church events, city events, all of it. Anything they can do with their little hands they will.

Yui reads to her kids every single night. She wants them to feel connected with her and have a good schedule. She thinks bedtime routines are a very important part of the day.

Growing up in the world’s most dysfunctional household does that to a person - or vampire.

His father was an abusive asshole, so the idea that he would be a father himself....disturbed him, if he’s being honest - children always seemed so troublesome to him.

Generally, until he found out about your existence...he really never viewed himself as ‘fatherly’.

He never viewed himself as the type to fall in love, either - and he didn’t, not really. Perhaps, over time, he’d grown to be somewhat fond of his old bride but there was little real attachment there - it’s not even as if she ever tried to break through his walls, which he had more of than people assumed.

So when she managed to escape the manor and run away into the unknown, never to be seen again, he couldn’t say he was surprised or heartbroken. Wounded pride at most.

She’d done her duty - even if in the end she escaped, rather foolish of her to do but she was smart enough in the execution not to get caught, which he had to commend. But he had gotten what he wanted out of her, as had his brothers. Even if he’d been the one closest to her, it was far from being enough to cause any real feelings of love between him and the lost-bride.

So, finding out about the existence of a secret daughter he’d never before known about...was more than a little shocking, even if he was the master of concealing his emotions, inside he was caught in the midst of a storm.

He had a daughter.

A daughter.

All this time, there had been a little child out in the world that was allegedly his. And he was only finding this out now, in a letter from *her* - it was unaddressed, of course, she was too wary to write down a return address. Rightly so - the wrath seeping through his veins was usually reserved only for Karlheinz in this extent, but at the moment the rage was equally shared between his father and former bride.

The letter stated all it had to. That fourteen years ago, she had given birth to a baby girl after running away and left her at the steps of an adoption clinic. It was a guilt-ridden confession, but she added she knew not what became of their shared secret child.

He thought back to the time he’d been sent all alone to the South Pole. Destitute, hopeless, alone...and then he thought about how a child he never even knew existed but was his had to go through something like that - their whole lives, probably.

There was a hope that they would’ve been adopted - for the best, really, until he remembered the child was surely a halfling and with every passing year may start growing into their abilities and carnal desires of bloodthirst.

So, begrudgingly, he hired someone to search for you in his stead. There was little to go off of, but eventually, some Private Investigators managed to uncover your whereabouts, based off nothing but the records from the adoption clinic.

“I’m your father.”

It was a painfully awkward statement.

Shuu had no idea how he would fare as a father. He had doubts and knew he would be far from what you surely needed - and just from the sight of you he felt guilty to see how you’d been forced to take care of yourself your whole life - it was obvious from the hardworking and toughened gleam in your eye.

But, if he couldn’t be an effective father - especially given that you were already a teenager - he hoped to at least be somewhat of a mentor. You were half-vampire and would need his help with training to control your abilities and thirst.

Reiji:

If there was one thing Reiji did want, it was a family.

Except that, in his mind, it would perfect.

The perfect, pristine family unit - he would marry someone his father found acceptable - a noble Vampire lady from another pureblood house, perhaps - and they would wed, he would surely inherit Karlheinz’s role as Vampire King - after proving himself superior to Shuu - and then they would create the perfect, most behaved and refined offspring the world had ever seen.

Indeed, he had his entire life planned out within his mind. So it was just too bad when his plans came crashing down in the form of his discovery of his illegitimate child.

When he first met you, he’d no idea who you were - to him, you were a stupid street rat who tried to steal from him, and he was about to show you that you’d made a grave mistake when he paused, seeing your face.

You looked a little too familiar - it was making him uneasy. You looked like she did - the former bride, before Yui. And yet there was something morbid in your eyes, reminding him of himself. It was a terribly strange experience for him.

And so he just scolded you, telling you stealing was bad and let you go on your way instead of releasing his full rage on you.

After the fated meeting he could not stop considering a possibility that you had been…- but that wasn’t possible. You could not be his child, it was just a coincidence. He fathered no children.

Except the thought haunted him each night.

What if he’d accidentally and unknowingly fathered a child - fathered you?

Was pregnancy the reason the bride had decided the foolish choice of escape?

She had been a sacrifice - nothing more - and he could not claim to have loved her. He didn’t love her but she had been a beautiful woman whom he used for his experiments and pleasure often. And though he loved her not, Reiji could not lie that he’d gotten...attached, to the woman, and felt betrayal’s bitter sting when she ran.

So he’d done the only logical thing, really, and disposed of her as he did his mother - he refused to allow people to manipulate him and hurt him, hiring a mercenary to find her and kill her - which was allegedly accomplished after about a year of his mercenary’s search for her.

Had she given birth to a child, just before he had been the one to order her death? If so - how tragic fate was.

The possibility kept him awake but he felt little guilt about being the reason for the woman’s death - if...if that girl he ran into was his offspring, and if his theory was correct, then the bride had ran with HIS child in her womb and deserved it regardless.

So then, he knew there was but one solution to the problem.

He set a search to find you, and for a DNA test to be conducted. After finding you, he ordered the PIs to take hair from you and send it to a lab and give the results to him.

You were of his blood.

So he went to you, introducing himself as “Reiji Sakamaki” and explaining that he was your father, and showed you the lab results.

You can say goodbye to any individuality and freedom you obtained before his discovery because from now on he is determined to make up for lost time...and transform you from an ugly duckling into a swan.

Like you always should have been, had he known about your existence.

Even if you enjoy your messy appearance and being hardworking and labouring - well, he just won’t have it.

And since you’re only fourteen - and he is your found father - you’re forced under his wing whether you like it or not.

Best to accept your new life, at least it’ll be a lavish one - even with impossible to fulfil expectations and lessons on etiquette your found father has planned for you.

Just don’t misbehave too much, whatever you do.

Ayato:

A daughter. A strange - tremendously strange - concept for Ayato to wrap his brain around.

He never considered children - wasn’t against having them, but never gave it much thought.

As for the mother of his child...he could not deny he loved her. He wasn’t good at love, and he knew that, but still - the way she’d abandoned her life - their life - and fled wounded his heart and his pride immensely.

It hurt to be discarded so easily - as if she’d never loved him, at all!

He was the best of the best, so why did she slip away so easily. Surely...surely he’d been good enough, hadn’t he?

He had to have been. She was just ungrateful.

And it showed, now more than ever, that she had been.

Because Ayato now knew of the existence of a child - a teenage girl - out there, belonging to him whom he had unknowingly fathered and who’d been hidden from his knowledge for so long.

He’d admittedly found it out from Laito - he was reluctant to give his brother any real credit but had to where it was due; he owed Laito this.

Allegedly, the red-head triplet had gone to the poor side of town to gamble and ran into a young teenage girl who looked like a spinning image of Ayato - not to mention she did not seem fully human.

And so, Laito started his own personal investigation into the matter, discovering the secret and revealing it, shedding light onto the shadows.

And so now Ayato had to face the music and acknowledge the fact he had a child.

He was a father.

And it terrified him to know that, because he’d allowed this poor girl - his daughter - to be forsaken and alone her entire life. When he found out that his bride had left the baby by herself bundled in thin blankets on the street he was furious.

Ayato hated his parents - both of them - with a heavy-set passion. And he’d promised himself, in the rare times he had considered children, that he would do everything to make the lives of his children as good as possible.

And he already somehow managed to fail that vow to himself.

So now...now, he was determined. Determined to be the best father you could ever want - to give you everything you should have had growing up.

He knew it wouldn’t be easy - and that he wasn’t...wasn’t exactly the best paternal figure, even if he hated to admit he wasn’t ‘the best’ at something - but he was going to try and try again until he could attain a proper, good relationship with you.

Besides, you already had some common interests in sports and “boyish” hobbies, such as cars and motors.

Probably the best father to have out of them all, simply because apart from overwhelming overprotectiveness, later on, he would allow you to be yourself - messy hair and muddy clothes and all.

He just wants to be a good father and make up for the lost time.

Laito:

Let’s be honest, he’s already fathered like twenty kids at this point

Laito doesn’t exactly know what ‘love’ is - romantic, platonic or familial.

His view of it is warped and fucked up, and he actually is perfectly aware of this fact, or at least; he sure as hell is not blind to it.

He’s motivated by lust and a desire to be wanted, appreciated and adored; but he also does not want to love in return.

So, to him, the former bride was an excellent play-toy. She was attractive and flirty and his type - then again, who wasn’t his type?

When she escaped in the night, he expected it to occur eventually. Especially after she realised his lack of true romantic intentions towards her and that he only wanted her around because she gave in to his lust oh-so-easily.

But the concept of her having been with a child was...relatively surprising. Enough to make him feel uneasy and somewhat blameworthy.

Like Shu, he never really expected to have a family, but worse still; he did not want one.

The idea of being a father sickened him.  He knew he was fucked up, even if he tended to look the other way at his own mess - he knew that a child being around him wasn’t going to end well.

He was terrified of becoming what he hated the most.

So much so that he initially tried to ignore the idea that you were his daughter.

He didn’t want it to be true.

Especially when he remembered the fucked up, awful shit Cordelia did to him - it terrified him to think he might do something just as scarring to his own child. He knew, within himself, that he never would - he was too disgusted by the idea of it, even if he acted carefree and without a moral compass.

But as time went on, he started to see you more often - you were scraping to get by, he could tell. And still, he told you nothing. You’d be cursed with him as a father.

At least, until one fateful Blood Moon night, when he was walking down the alley and found you, feral and beastly, as you drained the blood of a poor human soul who’d been at the wrong place at the wrong time.

And he knew that you did need him, even if he didn’t want you to need him.

Because without a mentor you’d be horrified and lost and he’d already allowed far too much harm to befall you as a result of his own selfishness.

And so he took you home - where you should have grown up regardless, and he tried his best.

He was...uncertain, how to be a parent. Not as if he ever had good parents of his own to be a pristine example.

So, instead, he tried to be the opposite of his own parents - to not hurt you as Cordelia did him  - he was overly cautious, in an ironic twist, to never make any overly sexualised comments with you in the room. He wanted to, in a futile manner, keep your innocence as long as possible despite the fact you’d lost your childhood bliss long ago if you ever truly had it in the first place. Growing up in foster homes and on the streets since you were a child had been rough.

Karlheinz had neglected him severely, and so he tried to be the anti-example for that, as well.

It was a huge change and blow to his life, and the way he’d lived until now - but he knew that maybe...just maybe, you were what he needed too.

Perhaps you could help him become a better person by making him a proper, real father.

Just maybe.

Kanato:

Chaos.

That is what ensued when the bride had up and left that one dark moon night, fifteen years ago.

Kanato’s rage was heard all through the manor and the surrounding woods, his piercing screeches enough to render a Banshee deaf.

Kanato always struggled with love. As the youngest triplet, he had spent is life forlorn and placed on the side burner as he longed for his mother or father’s attention, never fully receiving it.

So when he had her - the bride - all to himself...he was satisfied for the most part with the constant, endless attention he demanded from her.

And then she, just like everyone else in his life - left him. Abandoned him, stopped loving him.

He knew he should’ve turned her into one of his bride-dolls instead. She could never leave him if he had. But he had been stupid and allowed her freedom.

Fifteen years later it was actually Shu who found out about Kanato’s daughter - about you - and the news was certainly amusing in the most morbid of ways.

For a while, Shu kept this a secret from Kanato, knowing his reaction likely would be far from positive. Even if, by chance, it was - well, Kanato could hardly be anyone’s father, being so very childish himself.

Especially since they already had one brat in the manor, did they need another?

But eventually, the secret came out - as all secrets, inevitably, do.

Kanato locked himself in his room for a week, refusing to believe the facts. He couldn’t possibly be a father!

There was no way it was real.

For Kanato, the denial is strong and there is a chance he would stew in his denial forever, never doing anything about the situation, disgusted by the idea of having bred someone.

If, by some divine miracle, Kanato could get over his denial, next he’d throw a tantrum. He would be furious at everyone - at the former bride, at Shu, at Karlheinz and...at you, for merely being born.

Because this knowledge made him miserable - and so, by association, so did you.

He wouldn’t want to meet you - even see you - at first. It would take a lot of persuading from his brothers to even consider it.

He didn’t want to be a father.

He didn’t want children.

You would only steal the attention HE deserved.

Kanato does not take kindly to the competition - and that would be what he’d see you as. Competition.

There’s a high chance you would go on with your life never knowing your parentage at all - but there is always the slither of chance that he would accept you. But even then...well, perhaps that’s more a curse than it is a blessing.

To be the daughter of Kanato Sakamaki would be a hellish thing.

Because he would be an abusive mess. Even if he grew to love you as his child, he knows not how to be a good person, much less a good father. His mother made him sing until his vocal cords bled. That was the only time she paid attention to him - and it taught him that he must always fight to get praise and recognition and you were an obstacle.

His words of hate aimed toward you would pierce through you, even after all those years alone - having been found by your birth father only for him to treat you worse than an insect - it would destroy you, even if you tried not to let it get to you.

But there’d be times he’d be so, so weak. So childish. So needy - you would probably have to turn into the adult in this familial relation, in the long run - taking care of him, having tea parties and dressing up like a doll.

If you’re lucky and behave and do as he says and never argue, he might just be a tolerable father.

But would that be a tolerable life?

Perhaps it would be better to be abused and hurt by him - on his bad side and be broken, rather than be a little-too-liked by your father and have him turn you into his pretty little daughter-doll, the first of your kind; the offspring of his seed, ever-so-lovely in your pretty pink gown, forever beautiful and never-ending. He’d even get to showcase you to everyone!

“This is my daughter, isn’t she pretty?”.

Subaru:

Horror. That emotion was pumping frantically through Subaru’s veins.

 He was a father. 

He’d been a father for fourteen years but had been none-the-wiser of it - he had to know exactly what events had occurred for them to get here, to this point. 

What had happened to his former lover? 

When she left, he couldn’t blame her. 

He wished she would’ve remained by his side but he knew he was unlovable and a monster and filthy - so how could he ever expect her to stay? 

Still...she’d promised she would, and that she didn’t mind his abrasive behaviour, that she loved him - but he knew, now, that she only did all those things because she knew that he would protect her from his brothers if she was to manipulate him.  

When he first found out she kept such a deep secret from him, he punched a hole in the wall from instant rage, and then was overcome by sorrow. 

There was a child out there. A child, who was his by blood and kin, and who had grown up fatherless and - allegedly - motherless, since the former bride just...abandoned their child. 

And then she disappeared. 

t was shocking and made Subaru sick to the stomach - even...even Christa, as scarring as his relationship with her was, probably wouldn’t have just left him by the road somewhere! 

He had found you by chance - an accident, really. He was taking a walk in the city and overheard someone getting mugged - he told himself he didn’t care but it but then noticed the person being attacked was a young teenage girl with (H/C) tresses. 

He tried to walk away but couldn’t, turning around to help, when, much to his astonishment, he witnessed the girl - you - beating the shit out of your attackers and taking their wallets instead. It was...impressive, but it had to be supernatural. 

You were a strong, scrawny girl and such immaculate strength was abnormal - inhuman. It...reminded him of his own strength. 

He realised, afterwards, that you resembled her - his past lover - to a disturbing degree. 

The next time he saw you it was when you were on the run from some thugs. This time, he did intervene and saved your ass from being injured. 

You were cautious but thanked him - he noted that you were a street-smart kind of kid, and he could always appreciate someone who knew how to fight- but you were rightly guarded around strangers. 

That was when he saw your eyes and it took him aback. You had his mother’s eyes - they were exact replicas of Christa’s shining orbs, and he lost his breath at that moment. 

Weirded out, you said your farewells and rushed away. 

The idea that you were somehow related to him felt unreal. So he did what anyone would do - tried to deny it to himself, to tell himself it wasn’t possible. He did not have a daughter, and the former bride had taken with her all his happiness. Besides...even if you were his daughter, then he was just as unworthy of getting to be a father as his own was. 

He was violent and aggressive - what sort of father would he make? A bad one, surely. It wasn’t something Subaru was about to risk - at least, he didn’t want to. 

The thought refused to set him free from torment, however, and so he begrudgingly started observing you from the shadows. 

Suddenly your lot in life seemed to improve for no reason whatsoever. 

It was as though you had your personal guardian angel to protect you,

There’s a large chance he’d never reveal the truth, but an equal chance he would. Especially once he noticed your vampirism kicking in - you’d need...someone, even if it was him. 

Even if he was terrified of fatherhood and failing you - it had to be done. Subaru would be a cool dad to have, but unbearably protective to a point of insanity.

So I'm running a Yugioh Arc V RPG server

Our cast includes: A robot dog from XYZ trying to find its owner, a hacker from Synchro who uses spider cards to bug topsiders and blackmail them, and an abused Fusion girl who is so readily violent that she isn't sent to the front lines because she's too wild.

Due to various dimensional mishaps, such as Fusion girl deciding to storm the front lines herself, or the dog co-opting Fusion tech to go to another dimension to keep searching for its owner, they all end up found by Reiji Akaba, and experiencing a plot line parallel to Arc V canon.

As a first time DM, they have veered a little off path only a few sessions in.

They bodied Dipper Orion before he ever summoned an XYZ monster.

They managed to restrain and capture Yuto thanks to some terrible rolls on my end, which has led him to being in Reiji's custody early in the plot. Also the Fusion player character mildly wants to kill Reiji after finding out from Yuto that he's the Professor's kid.

Synchro girl had already established a strong hatred for Jack Atlas for being a traitor to the commons. Fusion Girl is getting really close to punching Shun in the face for their first encounter.

Reiji is already very tired and Synchro and Fusion girls are very pessimistic about his efforts in either of their dimensions which is not helping.

My players have expressed a desire to save all the trauma babies in Arc V, kill Leo Akaba, and prevent any of the Yu boys from ever getting absorbed. Also rekill Roget, but like. More.

Do you think Reiji would be a good parent if he accidentally got Yui pregnant? Would he be abusive?

Oh boy, it's been a long long time since I read the translations bud and I've gotten my head influenced by fanfiction and rps, I don't think I could give you a proper answer. This is just my headcanon:

I like to think he'd be a good parent, strict in terms of giving them duties and completing tasks, but they'd never want for attention, because he knows what loneliness does to a child. I personally like to think he has two children and he's very fixated on treating both of them exactly the same. No hand outs. No favoritism. But he'll give them assistance with homework and read to them late at night, and just before they go to sleep they'll glimpse something soft in his expression.

It takes him a long time to be comfortable with showing affection when they're older. When they're babies it's easier. He can teach them easily enough and caring for them is like clockwork. It's when they're older he realises they're individuals who can and will be shaped by his actions. He starts by giving head pats. He's also fairly patient and good with advice as they mature, but if they're disrespectful or break his china on purpose you can bet that he'd use some old fashioned discipline on them.

Overall he's a mixed bag but I think he'd deeply care about his children. He'd just struggle with being openly affectionate, since he was never taught how to be by his mother and Karl was always MIA. I like to think he's initially still very critical but he checks himself and slowly learns to shut up and stop critiquing everything.

Any and all of the protagonists?

All of them would be a tall order for one ask, but... If I had to pick one, I think I’ll go with the most recent series I completed, Yuya from Arc V!

Why I like them/why I don’t Yuya’s a sweet boy who wants to make the world smile, even if he’s feeling sad himself, which I find both endearing, and depressing. I just kinda want to put him in therapy so he can learn that repressing all his negative emotions and Only Being Happy no matter the situation is a very unhealthy way to go through life. I care him and want him to learn that expressing negative emotions is okay. Poor boy. Also, Yuya Sakaki is literally the dumbest fucking protagonist in Yugioh history (I say, having not seen Sevens yet- maybe Yuga is dumber), and if a character is dumb, I have no choice but to love him. Seriously, he once said that 300 kg of cotton is heavier than 300 kg of steel because he thought it was a trick question. The quiz duel episode really does cement him as the dumbest fucking protag, and I love him for it.

What I like about their appearance

Baby boy looks like tomato. Enough said. (Also I like his little choker/collar thing.)

Do I prefer their dub names or original names? Yuya’s name stays the same in both, so I can’t comment here.

Candyshipping... There is no other contender for me. These boys are really cute together, and they both care about each other a lot, so I can’t not love them as a ship. 

NOTP Hm... I guess shipping Yuya with any of the other Yu boys? Like Yuya/Yuri, Yuya/Yuto, etc. I can’t really say I have a Strong anti stance against most ships with Yuya I’m aware of, I just don’t really care about it if it’s not candyshipping. The Yu boys specifically just feel weird to ship, personally, especially when you consider the fact that they’re all fourths of a whole.

EDIT: I just remembered that Reiji (Declan in the dub) exists, so whatever their ship name is, that. I hate that. Fuck Reiji, all my homies hate Reiji, and I wouldn’t Ever wanna see ship art of that (even though I’m sure that exists and is at least semi-popular.)

OT3 Don’t have one. The only person I ship Yuya with is right up there. Sorry. No third here.

Cheer Mole!!! She’s just a shy little baby trying her best, and I love her for it. She’s so important.

Favourite moment they were in Since it’s tied to Candyshipping, I still do love that dream Yuya has immediately after he meets Sora, where he’s become a champion and won a trophy and made his dad proud, because it’s his fantasy dream; it’s everything he could ever want, and then out of nowhere, Sora shows up and immediately just jumps onto him and will not let go. He’d only known Sora for a day before this, and we never saw Sora exhibit any behavior like this in the waking world. He was actually very restrained, and only offered Yuya a handshake, so seeing Sora in Yuya’s fantasy dream behaving that way? V e r y  telling that a certain protagonist is running from his gay subconscious.

Least favourite moment Mmm... The Battle Beast duel in season 3. I’ve ranted about this at length to at least two people, but I really really hated how the whole theme of “you shouldn’t lash out just because you were hurt” got pushed here, when like. The Battle Beast was literally tortured for years by Arc V Gozaburo to become a fighting machine. He finally got pushed too far and was about to kill his father (or handler, or teacher, whatever the fuck you want to call Sanders,) but then of course the narrative demands "Nooo don't kill your father, just because he verbally and physically abused you and kept you in inhumane conditions doesn't mean he doesn't deserve mercy". Yes the fuck it does.  I know that Yuya was just doing what his dad taught him and all (thank you for the psychological damage, Yusho), but yeah, that was probably my least favorite Yuya moment. I wasn’t even really mad at him specifically, more like the writers for not letting this abused man lash out against someone who literally kept him in a solitary confinement cell.

Would I fuck, marry or kill them Like with my last one on Tyranno, I see him more as a son, but... [Edit] I’m gonna have to say none of the above. When I think about it, Yuya’s only ever seemed affected by male attention, so he’s most likely a (very repressed) gay. I can’t pick anything here.

21 First thoughts compared to your thoughts now?I don’t remember my first thoughts on the games tbh……. I’ve always thought it’s a really unique series, I guess? It’s almost a complete inversion of the otome genre and I think that’s really interesting! I know to take some things (the cruel/abusive bits) with a grain of salt but I really like the dark setting in general and depth of some characters

You’re either getting yelled at for mistreating Gem(which is definitely something you have to fix! She’s an angel that doesn’t deserve such abuse), or getting swooned over.

Disclaimer: I am an incredible friend.  I know this.  You can even think I’m arrogant for knowing this.  I’m not only flaws and bad things.  However, the charming, lovely parts are not the focus of this post.  So if you’re not up for some ugly, I’d go ahead and close this.

...so, when I’m not being the best of myself, I have to acknowledge that I am a bit much.  I connect to all the Sakamakis and Mukamis in some fashion, finding them incredibly sympathetic or empathetic in some way without thinking for one second that what they do is necessarily ‘okay’.  As all decent DL fans know, liking or even writing one fictional thing, does not mean you approve or support it in reality.

Subaru?  Why yes, I, too, am a walking monster and abomination who thinks they need to control themselves tightly around others.  I’ll mark them, I’ll mess them up, I’ll ruin them just by being around.  After all, people who have a laundry list of experiences like mine are often terrible, awful people who become their abusers - it’s just a matter of time, right?  Am I just a ticking time bomb of hurting other people?  Better to not get close.  Hmm...that sounds a lot like Shuu, too, doesn’t it?  And I’m awfully tired of getting invested in people only to deal with the pain of it...  

Kanato?  No matter how I try to listen and communicate, I can’t think or respond like “other people”.  I cannot fit.  I cannot be anything or anyone but myself.  I had to take care of myself, I had to fix myself, and the idea of having “someone else” in any form, in a bond, is sometimes such a genuinely alien concept I have difficulty with on bad days.  

Reiji?  Ruki?  Ayato?  The pressure, the competition, the need to be the better and never being able to fit your own standards of what is “enough” let alone anyone else’s.  Being second, being less, even after trying one’s hardest and pushing oneself to the limit...  I can’t even match my expectations for myself.  I can’t be vulnerable, I can’t be weak, I have to be Strong and I have to be fine.  Who needs you?  I certainly don’t need you.  But I’m willing to be someone you need, if that’s what you want.

Laito?  Kou?  Man, existing in your own skin and hating it and memories you can’t get away from?  Same, sometimes, man.  Also I’m probably gonna talk the least here but man, I too am a sensitive fucking baby about rejections that aren’t even necessarily rejections, and I too have Trust Issues and Bond Issues and I kind of want to make out with all my cute female friends, but this is something you generally don’t do for reasons most people are already fully aware of.  I also want ATTENTION and I want to earn it and demand it and receive it.  And when I do, it probably won’t be enough, and I’ll still be thinking I didn’t get enough.  Hm, definitely reminds me of a blond and a redhead.  

Azusa?  Hahahaha ha h a h a ha h a let’s move on.  Thankfully not so much these days, but man, have I been there in the past.  

So yeah.  

Once upon a time, I was a mess of a human being.  Now, I’ve just got a ton of old scars all over the place, but I’m a different person.  However, my experiences led me to have... a significant amount of feelings regarding 99% of the Diabolik Lovers cast.  I’m no special snowflake - going through life and experiencing pains and troubles and difficulties is something everyone has.  What pattern and colors one’s life is, that’s yours.  

It’s also a little relieving to write about characters so much more significantly more effed up and/or monstrous than you yourself are when you have trouble feeling like the grandest of people.  Maybe.

But yeah.  I feel a bit connected to most of that cast in some shape or form.
